I bought a '07 GLS 4-cyl automatic with the premium package for $16,100 + tax at Allen Samuels in Fort Worth. They sold me a car with hail damage without telling me, so I took it back and made them give me a nicer car for the same price. I sat in there all day and kept saying "No" "No." "No." until they gave in.

Be careful with the email quotes. I got quotes from several dealers that sounded great over email, but it turns out that the price was based on balloon financing (36 months + one big payment at the end). No thanks. The "real" price ended up being $1000 more.

Good advice on e-mail quotes. I expect to copy the e-mail quotes and have them with me when I enter the dealership. If there's a difference in the price, and/or they failed to identify things like "balloon financing," I will confront them.

The quote from Best Hyundai, Houston, specifically stated "not a Balloon Price." Furthermore, the ad price was $1,000 less for a military person ($14,395 + TTL).

If anyone has any information regarding a recent purchase or quote from any of the Texas dealerships listed in Message #4217, please speak up.

Thanks for the great information, mirrors what I also received from the Austin and San Antonio dealerships. As the next poster mentioned I'd be leery of the price out of town dealerships mention as there may well be some added costs to the quote they provide. One thing I discovered is that both Hyundai and Kia are adding marketing support fees to the invoice price that may account for the higher prices in San Antonio we see here that other markets may not be charging. As to the TT&L fees here is a breakdown that may be of use for you: Sales Tax:6.25%, DMV Fees: $127.05, Documentation Fees: $50.00, Texas Inventory Tax: .002543 X Car Price. Add all these to the car price and you have the out the door price.

I'm glad you pointed this out. I've been racking my brain attempting to justify San Antonio dealership pricing that is far above Austin and Houston (and possibly other TX cities).

Now, my question is, are the Austin/Houston dealerships going to try to sneak in these marketing fees just prior to signing the purchase agreement?
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
That my friend is a good question. I couldn't understand why the invoice prices were higher than what both Edmunds and KBB showed and it wasn't until the salesman showed me the invoice that I noticed the difference and when I asked about that I was told everyone pays that fee though I didn't buy that answer. I'm not sure whether the Austin or Houston markets charge that fee or not so I'd be cautious and have them provide you a price breakdown on their quotes.

One more thing ... be on your toes the entire time you're in a Hyundai dealership. Before this Sonata, I always had Hondas and Mazdas. The dealership experience I had at Hyundai was an order of magnitude worse than the Honda and Mazda dealers I've dealt with in the past. Allen Samuels was so bad that I actually wrote a letter to Hyundai corporate before they had a chance to send me the customer satisfaction survey.

I had a minor warranty issue and got it taken care of at Vandergriff Hyundai in Arlington. I highly recommend them and should've gone there in the first place.

To be honest i did not mess with the digits. I just said I'll buy it if you give me all existing rebates & incentives. After an 40 minutes they gave me this price.
I asked for 07. They had only 08.

What is the typical life/mileage before its time to turn a Sonata in? Is it realistic to expect a Sonata to last 150,000 miles?
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
I have a 2000 Elantra that pushing 150K miles so I would say yes.

I've had my new Sonata for a week now and I had forgotten how enjoyable driving can and should be. My new car brings out the "kid" in me since it's like having a new toy. Got a great deal at Burns Hyundai in Marlton, NJ from a nice young man with a great smile and easy manner. What a great buying experience! :shades:

Does anyone know for sure when the 2009 Sonata is to begin selling in the US?
  • johng9johng9 Member Posts: 2
2008 Sonata 4 Cyl GLS Auto, Pop package 3 (but without sunroof, and with interior leather which was my spec) for an OTD (post taxes, title etc) price of $20,700.

Is this a good offer? I have been doing some research by reading this thread but can't find the answer.

Yes I have checked Edmunds which gives a TMV of $19,743 for the same car. However, the pricing is for pop package with sunroof. As I said I do not want the sunroof and have asked dealers to substitute interior leather for the sunroof.

Thanks anyone for answering. I figured I'd ask about the pricing before I got the car. :)

I was quoted $23800 less $500= $23300 on a 2008 Limited Sonata with a Sunroof, cargo tray and carpeted floor mats with 72 month 0 % interest. Is this the best deal I can get or has anybody had better luck.

    Is this price OTD?
  • johng9johng9 Member Posts: 2
$19,600 OTD (final price, including taxes, including everything) Hyundai 2008 Sonata GLS pop pkg 2, with interior leather. 3.9% HFMC financing.

Edit: This is just FYI for potential buyers. I no longer care for an opinion on whether it was a good price or not- I think it was. :)

And am I glad that's done. It was a stressful month and a half.

Can you tell me where you are located, Dealer name, I am looking at the same car. I am in upstate NY.

    Thanks

I have been looking to get a 2008 Limited V6 in the Upstate NY area, Been to all the local dealers, The best any one will do is invoice minus any rebates. I have no trade so it's a simple deal, I see posts where people are getting $1000-2000 below invoice. Is there a secret on how to get below invoice?

    Thanks

Somewhere I recall seeing a website (but can't find its address now) where you could look up the VIN number of a car to be sure of its history.....like to be sure it's not from a flooded area, etc. Do any of you happen to know that site? Or/and do you know now to interpret "meaning" in the Hyundai VIN numbers?

    thanks!

try townehyundai in NJ. They have the best prices in the area 2000 below invoice.
  • auto_wizauto_wiz Member Posts: 6
There is no secret. You just have to bargain real hard. Most of the dealers will be happy to go 1000 or up to 1500 below invoice to make a deal.
  • auto_wizauto_wiz Member Posts: 6
If you can travel down further below NJ like MD or VA, then the customer rebates are 2000 on V6 models while in NY or NJ area its only 1000, so do the math.
I would recommend going to Alexandria Hyundai as I bought mine from there on black friday

I am looking at a SE V6 +CFM & CN (23070 msrp, 21842 invoice) or a GLS (I4) with PEP 2 +CFM (20280 msrp, 19418 invoice). I will take the 72 month 0% w/$500 rebate on either. What is a good deal before counting rebate and ttl? Also, if they want to lend to me for 0%, I will let them unless there is a catch? Is there?

I see these $1000s below invoice, is that real? Is that counting the rebates?

Sorry if the answers are buried somewhere in the thread.

Just bought a 2008 Sonata SE V6, base package with floormats, from Ed Voyles Hyundai in Smyrna, GA for 20,250 before rebates/TTL. Invoice was 21,769 on Edmunds, which matched the invoice the dealer showed me. Went with the 0% financing + $500 rebate, total OTD price was 21,500. I'm pretty happy with the final price, and especially with the 0% financing. The salesperson and finance guy were friendly and easy to work with, too; the whole process was pretty painless. This is the first new car I've bought, my previous rides were always old beaters. I plan to be driving this one long after even Hyundai's warranty runs out. :D

Sounds like you got a real good deal. Lower prices can be found, but not a 0% financing. That 0% is worth a few thousand bucks over the life of a 5 year loan.

Good luck with your new car.
  • blueszbluesz Member Posts: 11
hi, is your price 20250 including tax/registration fee ?

    thanks
  • blueszbluesz Member Posts: 11
How long for your 0% financing? 4 year, 5 year or 6 year?

    How much down pay?

    Thanks
  • dennyjkdennyjk Member Posts: 2
20,250 was before taxes/fees and rebates. 21,500 was the total price out the door after everything. I had money for a $6000 down payment and had planned to do a four-year loan, but since I got the 0% financing, I elected to put zero down and went with the six-year financing; the down payment went back into my savings account, where it'll stay for at least the life of the loan, and each month I have an automatic savings plan that will transfer the difference in monthly payments between the 6-year loan and the 4-year into the same account. The reason I did that was so I can earn the ~4% interest on that money and still have it available to cover the gap in the event that the car is totaled in an accident or I have to sell it when I'm upside-down. I wouldn't advise that approach if you are paying interest on your loan, of course, or if you can't make yourself put away your would-be down payment and never touch it for anything else for the course of your loan.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
While you have that downpayment money in a savings account and will be adding to it monthly, I'd still suggest that you check with your car insurance company about GAP insurance. Not all insurance companies offer it. Here in CT, the two companies I represent offer it for a very reasonable price, less than auto finance companies/dealers typically charge.

Ask your insurance compay about it to see what they charge. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted on this site. It really helped my wife and I in the purchase of our new Sonata. Here is the important stuff:
2008 Sonata Limited V6-White with Leather, OTD price $20,800 with 0% interest for 72 months. Monthly payment of $289.30. Traded in our 2006 Honda Accord and got $16,800 ($4,000 over pay-off). If you are wanting a GREAT buying experience go to BILL WHITE HYUNDAI of Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Really enjoyed the buying experience from those guys.
  • mikebztmikebzt Member Posts: 44
I still think there is some room for them to drop the price. Not a big amount but enough. All you do is just walk out the door. They will call you and you now use the 15,600 as negotiation at another dealership
  • blueszbluesz Member Posts: 11
    Hi, coachijn2007,

I would really appreciate it if you can give the breakdown on the price.

    Thanks a lot

    thanks,

Hi guys. Well im pretty close to getting a car. Maybe the next few weeks here. I went into the hyundai dealership because i seen the have AWESOME financing deal of 0% for 72 months + 500 cash back. I go in looking for a 08 Sonata V6 Limited with a moonroof. The only one the had was white which i wouldn't want. Id want either silver or grey. I went in there with a price in mind what i wanted to pay for the car 22.5k. They of course said they couldn't get me this price and tried normal dealer tricks of giving me the most they could for my trade in and then charging me 25.5k for the sonata and then showing my payments would be only $338 a month (which im sure a lot of people fall for) but im not that stupid smile.gif. Ive seen a hyundai dealership in ohio sell pretty much what im looking for for pretty close to 22.5k. I guess my reason for this thread is to ask you what is a "safe" price to ask for this car but a price that, for the most part, dealers would accept. Is my asking price of 22.5k way to low? What would you consider to be in the safe range for what im looking at? If i am going to get a sonata i definitly want to get in this deal before the end of the year because i will get $500 cash back on my offer to them and then 0% for 72 months which is just awesome. Any help would be appreciated.

    thanks,
    ncage

Negotiate. You can do it. Where r u? Maybe my dealer can beat them
  • pud2pud2 Member Posts: 20
I picked up my new 08' SE Sonata this evening, is a V-6, did not get the "Premium" package.
Anyhow, negotiated the deal a couple of evenings ago, wanted the DK. Cherry Red color.
Sales person and my wife and I there together.
After a bit of haggling(relatively "easy going") we ALL agreed on a price of $21,000 EVEN, after rebate, before taxes--approved by sales manager. To be financed at the 0% rate.
They tell me they would have to do a dealer exchange, but no problem, they found what I want, will have it at dealership in 24-48 hrs.

    Cool, or so I thought.
I wait most of next day, was supposed to hear from dealership with status.(Big Virginia dealer we are talking about here)--I hear nothing, so at about 3:00PM, I call...My sales lady is not in, talk to other sales man, who ask's me, "So when did she say we will have it"? (He knows NOTHING about sale).
I tell him the 24-48 hour bit, he says "Oh, ok, I will make SURE it is here tomorrow afternoon"(guess it will be 48 hours).
Now, I am beginning to have the "warning lights" going off in my head.
So, I call next MORNING about 10:00am, to check status on car, which is supposed to be in that afternoon...guess what, now NETHER salesperson I have talked to is in..and sales manager has to "check" and see.She knows nothing about said promised delivery, and tells me " I wasn't here yesterday, I do not know what happened"---anyone here ever hear of leaving a note or email with the management people?
Make a long story short, at 6:00 PM, my car is still 4 and 1/2 hour drive away, and dealer's pick-up person has not even arrived there yet!
Now I discuss with the sales manager a time on the THIRD day to pick up my Sonata,,,set up 4:00PM this afternoon---I figure they have to have it done by then...!
I get there car, looks good, we go in to finish paperwork.
I am now working with #2 sales guy I talked to the day after my agreement with sales lady to buy car.(you following?)
We do his paper stuff, then I go to finace guy.
When we did the "agreement" for the $21,000 price, the payment ended up being $300 a month @ 72 months.
Finance guy is whizzing through paperwork, and tells me payments are $317.00 a month.
I say, "not right, suppose to be $300.00 a month"--Also tell him, I do not have my reading glasses, so check out the problem.
He runs numbers on his computer, says "no, I do not know where she(sales lady) got $300 a month", it is $317.00
So, I in my GULLIBLE, NON-READING mind, say "OK, she messed up, $17 a month is not going to kill me.
And sign contracts where shown by finance guy.
I drive home in new car, happy, get inside, read contract....AND FIND THEY HAVE CHARGED ME $22,220 BEFORE taxes etc...on a car that was AGREED UPON TO HAVE COST $21,000!!!!!
I call sales manager, she AGAIN gives me this "I wasn't here---she(my sales lady) must have made a mistake....!
No mistake, it was an agreed upon price by sales person, the sales manager on that night, and myself.
I am fit to be tied now-- can I do anything at all to get them to honor what was agreed upon?
    ANYTHING?
Been home 3 hours with my new car, and am sorry I ever decided to even LOOK at a new vehicle!
Sorry for the length--any good lawyers here?

Sorry for your troubles, pud. What dealer did you use? I'm in the Maryland-D.C. area, and may be looking for a new Hyundai in the next few months. Dealers to avoid are just as important as dealers to use. Thanks, Bob
