2009 Sonatas are hitting some lots now, e.g. Fitzmall has some in stock according to their web site, and there was a buyer's report on one in the 2009 Sonata discussion the other day. I saw an ad in my local paper today saying "2009s on the way!"

Yes, the 2009 Sonata I4s get the 5-speed AT. And the SE gets a B&M short-throw stick shift. :)
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Yes, I saw that $5200 under invoice last night also. My guess is that they updated the rebate but did not update the selling price (before rebate) which may be somewhat dependent on factory to dealer incentives.

While a 5 speed A/T is preferable in the 4 cyl (or 6 for that matter) I could definetely live with the 4 speed at thhis type of discount. Last Feb ('07) we bought a new '07 SE @ $4400 below invoice including a $500 owner loyalty discount...so the discount is much better now...must be due to the '09 refresh...but again, I could certainly be pleased with an '08 at these prices.

Remember, you can have the car serviced at any dealer you choose.

Backy, or anyone else, is there a link to that policy somewhere in writing (or common knowledge)? I am currently looking at a best deal at a location that would not be convenient for me to take the car to get it serviced. Are you sure I'll be able to take it to the closer Hyundai dealership to get it serviced?

    Thanks.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If you have to have it in writing, you should be able to find it with a little digging. Try the Hyundaiusa site (warranty section) for example.

But it's common knowledge, and common sense. Think about it. You buy a new car. The next month you are transferred to another state. You take your car into the local dealer to get it serviced. Are they going to say, "Sorry, you didn't buy the car here so we can't service it for you."? No.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
    Right, backy.

Manufacturers' warranties are valid throughout the country.

For service (non-warranty work), what dealership would refuse to provide service (and be paid for it) because the car was bought somewhere else?

Both of my company's Sonatas were bought out of state. The service department at the local dealer did not hesitate to perform routine service.

I do my own oil changes and have my local independent shop do major fluid changes like a trans flush. As long as I keep the receipts for proof I'm ok.

BTW I am seeing some great prices for new Sonata's here. Makes me wish I lived closer to Fitz, etc. I would trade out of the 06 into an 08 in a heartbeat if I did.

I was recently quoted an "out the door" price of $14,800 for a 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS - Automatic (4cyl). Is this a good price for the vehicle considering the rebates that Hyundai dealerships are offering?

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Seems pretty darn good to me. How much are the taxes, license, and fees--that is, everything except the car and its destination charge? And what state are you in and what is the dealer's name (it's ok to post the dealership name, just not their web site URL, phone, or sales rep name)?

...Not the car they want me to buy...

I am interested in the Sonata, and went to my local dealer today. While they did say that they had the $3000 rebate (or 0% APR for 60 months & 1.9% for 72) they were trying to pull the bait and switch on me, by saying that they didn't have any more 08 Sonata as advertised. (those are the new 08s that list MSRP at about 19K then dealer "discounts" to about 15-16K).

Many moons ago, I was in the car biz and I was not very happy about this turn of events... when I pushed for more information about the dealer discounted price, I was given an example of a 24K Sonata discounted to 21K, which is way off my price range. After that, we went to look at some 07 & 08 used Sonatas, still listed at 17-18K, not what I had come in for.

It has been said before here that perhaps the deal looks better than the actual car, but I think the Sonata 3K rebate on top of the advertised dealer discounts really makes one consider a new car (I have never bought a new car, but this deal may bring me in...)

Question is, how can I get the car I want without the dealer playing games with me? Can I go directly to Hyundai and order one? Is there some intermediary available? I'm in New Jersey (Phila area) and am not interested in the traditional "let me talk to my manager 7 times and we'll "split the difference with you" type of dealing.

    Opinions are appreciated. Thanks
  • gabebalazsgabebalazs Member Posts: 18
I think if you were able to order one from Hyundai (I'm not sure how that goes), you would get the 3K rebate but no other discounts. I assume it would be $3000 off MSRP and that's it. Of course you could build up your dream Sonata if that's possible to do at Hyundai, I don't know.

What I did was I found a dealership (Fitzmall) which was far away but had excellent selection of 08 models (now that was over a month ago).
I wanted an 08 Limited V6 and they had at least 10-15 in stock without sunroof and another 10-15 with sunroof. So it was easy to make a choice what I wanted color- and options-wise, not exactly like ordering your own car but close. AND they were selling them about $1000 under invoice. At that time rebate was $2500 including their own auto show rebate, and I saved $5200 over MSRP on my 08 LTD V6 with sunroof.
I had to fly in (cost me 68 buck a ticket) and drive it home 450 miles away but it was worth it.

Actually Fitzmall in Gaithersburg, MD is not that far from Philly. Another option is Towne Hyundai in NJ, also not too far away. Both offer "no haggle", published Internet prices. Both had several 2008 Sonatas in stock, last time I checked their web sites a day or so ago.
  • elvisluvselvisluvs Member Posts: 29
Carsdirect has a basic gls '08 for $16.1k +/- (with a philly zip) If you buy from them or not is your business- but at the very least you can show it to a dealer and say "can you beat it?" I had what I thought was a low markup high volume philly area dealer saved in my faves- but I can't seem to find it. Look around a bit more in you area at some of the other dealers. I'm also not sure of your budget but- fitz had an '08 limited for 18k the other day- not sure if it was a phantom or a demo though.
  • zeedonkzeedonk Member Posts: 3
Thanks for the help and advice. I'll be looking into these other dealerships.

Is there anything to keep in mind if we decide to buy a car out of state? (We live in NJ, what should I know if I decide to buy in DE or PA?)

    Thanks again
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Let the dealer know you are coming from out of state, as there may be different ways of handling things like taxes and license fees in that case (e.g. maybe you'll pay license fees in your home state vs. at the place you buy the car). Also I know some states in the Northeast follow the CAFE emissions standards. But I don't know what effect that would have on buying a car from a non-CAFE state--maybe a resident of one of those states can comment on that.
  • guamjoguamjo Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the reply backy. Just bought the car today for an out the door price of $15,400. Includes ALL fees - tax, processing fees, destination charge, etc. I know the original quote was $14,800, but managed to get the popular package w/ sunroof for an extra $600 (valued at $1550). They threw in floormats as well.

The MSRP was $21095. The actual price (w/o any of the fees) of the car with the sunroof popular package was $13,700.

To answer your question, I am in Northern VA and there were two dealership that were very comparable with their quotes. The buying experience was a very good one and feel as if I got an incredible deal.
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
If you could post the dealer name (not the salesperson) it would be appreciated.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
What a great deal--getting the package with moonroof and floormats for only $600 was icing on the cake! That is a lotta car for $13,700 + TTL.
  • elvisluvselvisluvs Member Posts: 29
    Bra-vo :D
  • howard18howard18 Member Posts: 53
May i know when you said Popular Package, is that mean package #1 or Package #2 or Package #3?

    http://www.northfreewayhyundai.com/MiscPage_4

Base on what you said sound like you have package #3?
  • guamjoguamjo Member Posts: 6
You are correct - Package 3 (popular package w/sunroof).

It looks as if dealerships are really pushing to unload the 08 Sonatas, so if you're in the market for a car, this a great opportunity!
  • zeedonkzeedonk Member Posts: 3
    Thanks, good ideas...

By the way, does anybody have an opinion on the Sonata w/ 5 speed? They seem to be the dirt cheapest. I don't mind the 5 speed, but can't seem to wiggle my financial way into the V6, so the 4cyl is probably what we're going with. Fitzmall has one for $14,202- hard to beat that price, I think...

    Thoughts?
  • kagedudekagedude Member Posts: 407
I've been checking out the 08 Sonata GLS 4cyl auto with no packages at dealerships and they keep taking 3K off the MSRP to just $16,545. I am in the NYC area, do you think I can get a better deal than this? How is it possible to get it down to $13700 or $14800. Thanks.
  • elvisluvselvisluvs Member Posts: 29
As far as I know- the clutch isn't covered=$$$. Please correct me if I am wrong.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes... Towne Hyundai is pretty close to NYC. They have low, published (Internet) prices. Check out their web site to see if they have a car and price you like.
  • kagedudekagedude Member Posts: 407
Thanks. Checked their website but prices weren't published. Call the sales manager type of deal. Looks like their inventory is all V6.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Prices are published, in that they post all the info you need to calculate price--makes it very simple to get a price on any of their cars. Use the Internet pricing link. They tell you how much their discount is (includes a $500 Internet coupon), under invoice (you can get invoice price right here at edmunds.com) and they tell you how much the current rebate is. Then it's just a matter of adding the sales tax, license, and doc fees which you can get an exact quote on from them when you're ready.

2008 GLS Sonata Pkg 3 Automatic
    $21,095 MSRP
    $20,319 Invoice
    $3,000 Rebate

    $17,319 invoice minus rebate

My question is how can a $13,700 price be calculated?
  • elvisluvselvisluvs Member Posts: 29
I can't comment on the above math. I know I'll sound like a broken record but- here in Connecticut- when we went shopping for a sonata lx in 2004 at key hyundai- they said they couldn't touch the carsdirect price. We drove down to new rochelle. They are out of business now- but they sold us with rebates and loyalty a '04xg 350 L for under what key would sell us the sonata for. We are in the market (being a cheap yankee i'm practicing my "wait and see" technique") for a new hyundai. I sent dw to go test an azera (at key) about two months ago. With the 0%- they gave her an over invoice price of 29,500 for a 2007 azera. And to quote the salesman, "that's a very good price". So what you ask? In my near area key is the only game in town (or more like the southwest corner of connecticut). My opinion is the average person still walks in there and hears- they will go $500 under the sticker- and they think they won the lottery. The dealerships that consistently get mentioned here- seem to be doing big volume. Maybe they can throw more money on each hood because they are hitting big monthly sales goals. They seem to start at invoice and keep subtracting from there. Maybe that is also why dealers like the one near me plays for the msrp buyer- and don't really care if they lose a bargain hunter like me. I also suspect there are a lot of these smaller, less volume hyundai dealers that do well by being the only game in town (or county) etc. I'm not sure if that explains it all- but it probably covers quite a bit of it.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Where is this price from? Is it for a brand new car or a demo or "dealer use" situation? How many miles on it?
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
When a friend of mine was getting serious about buying an Azera abut a year ago, he checked with Key with the salesman he leased his Mercury from. That guy, the one who sometimes writes letters to the CT Post, wanted $3,000 more for an '06 Azera (Key didn't have the '07 Azera a year ago) than he wound up paying for an '07 with Ultimate pkg at Towne.

I forget which town you're in, I'm in Trumbull. But from here to Towne it's only 100 miles...well worth the drive. Key's service department is no problem, as you may know.

When my business bought an '07 Sonata in Feb last year, my brother test drove one from Key in Milford. The sales attitude was a bit better than Bridgeport. The sales man told him that they might be able to go as low as invoice at the end of February. I forget what the rebate was at that time, but we got the car from Towne at $4400 under invoice including dealer discount, rebate & $500 owner loyalty. (It may have been $2K rebate & $dealer price $1900 under invoice).
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
$13,700 is from this post. I very much want to know the dealer that sold this car so I can see if I may obtain a similar deal. It would be great if someone could explain to me how/why a dealer would sell for $13,700 a $21,095 MSRP new Sonata.

I can't even get the local dealers to go to $16,100 that a NE dealer has advertised. I'm at $16,500 in the Chicago area for a $21,095 Sonata.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
    I agree...that deal seems unblievable.

Maybe there was a trade-in he didn't mention or maybe it was a "demo." May it was just a fantasic supercalifristic.... freak thing.

Anyway, if it was a clean deal (no trade) and it was as reported...WOW. Can't say anything more.
  • jmcgannjmcgann Member Posts: 4
Just picked up a Deepwater Blue 2008 Sonata Limited w/ sunroof, floor mats, and cargo net. MSRP including optional features was $25,880. Out the door (OTD) total cost was $20440. This was in Virginia.
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
The local dealer...the fifth largest Hyundai dealer in the country...has only a handful of '08 sonatas left,,,,BUT has almost a hundred '09s in stock.

Wouldn't doubt that with the present credit crises coupled with the fact that so many took advantage of the large rebates with the '08s that the demand for '09s will be on the low side and that Hyundai will then be offering good customer incentives by June.

    4 cyl or V6?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Just saw that Hyundai is offering $500 bonus cash on 2008 Sonatas in conjunction with the Twin Cities Auto Show, which begins today.
  • jmcgannjmcgann Member Posts: 4
Forgot to mention that mine was a V6.
  • davis22davis22 Member Posts: 17
Was quoted 16700 OTD on a 2008 Sonata today. This doesn't include a popular equipment package. Can I do better?
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
It would be more clear if you break the price down so people can see how much of that price is tax and license fees.
  • davis22davis22 Member Posts: 17
Ok the offer went down to 16500 OTD. but here is the breakdown for the first offer of 16700.

    Sale price: 17999
    Doc fee: $55
    State & Local Taxes: 1489.46
    Total License and Fees: $216.75
    Total Price: 19760
    Total Rebates: $3000
    Amount: 16760

    Hello Davis,

I am also interested in Sonata GLS.
For the price you provided, did you choose any packages?

I will post my price after I contact local dealers.
  • davis22davis22 Member Posts: 17
No, this price does not include any packages.
  • sujansujan Member Posts: 5
Hyundai Sonata GLS 08 Automatic 2.4 No extra Package installed

    MSRP: $19735

    Dealer Quoted Price: $14900

I need to pay for dealer paperwork, tag and tax. I am from Oklahoma.

Should I take this deal or there is still some room to bargain?
  • davis22davis22 Member Posts: 17
The advertised price for all of the dealers around here (Northern California) is currently $14,995 so your price sounds about right. I do have a guy who quoted me $14,599 so you may be able to get them to lower the price a bit.
  • craigbrookscraigbrooks Member Posts: 420
I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
I've seen ads like that, but they were for the manual transmission.

Notice he said he needs to pay an undisclosed price for "dealer paperwork."
That could be almost any amount of money and is likely a few hundred to several hundred more dollars above the price he posted.

If they don't post the doc fee amount up front and it is a state that doesn't limit or regulate doc fees, prices posted that exclude that fee are not meaningful.

Sometimes sleazy dealers will also post prices in ads that don't included the destination charge.
  • davis22davis22 Member Posts: 17
I agree, I would definitely get the dealer to give you an OTD price so you can calculate how much they are really selling the car for.

Like I mentioned before, I negotiated a deal of $14,599 for the 08 Sonata GLS AT. No packages. I am probably buying the car today but I am first having the salesman give me the OTD price. Also, I took this price to my local dealer and they wouldn't touch it. They stood firm at the $14,995 price by claiming that they've sold 4 since Saturday so there is no shortage of buyers. I really feel this is a great deal on this car and we won't be seeing them on the lots much longer.
  • davis22davis22 Member Posts: 17
Ok, the deal I am accepting is a steel gray 08 Sonata GLS. No packages. OTD price is $16,295.21. This is the best deal I could find here in Northern California and I feel happy with it.
  • bigcattxbigcattx Member Posts: 3
    This is a good deal.

I contacted a dealership in Charleston, SC. The initial OTD offer they gave me is $17550. Now I am asking for $16300 OTD.

Thank you Davis for sharing the information.
