I don't think that I have been to eight dealers in the past twenty years ...
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
Brought my survey for some service work into my service writer and filled it out in front of him, he gave me a free oil and lube coupon.
Very considerate of him, as I would've given them all excellents any ways. Made a positive impression though!

Not really that unreasonable, assuming he was looking at a number of models (Toy, Nissan, Honda, etc), which requires visiting a lot of dealers. The 8 on-line contacts could just be the "blast E-mail" technique (hitting all the Honda dealers within x miles of home).

Or, he just really likes spending time at car dealers (works for me!)

This weekend I looked at a 4Runner, Pilot, Pathfinder, Trailblazer and Envoy. I also made one online contact to another dealer. With all the tools available, I can see how making several online contacts could be fairly easy to do.

...this is the CONSIDERATE discussion. No need to question folks who are happy with their purchase - that's the bottom line of it all, right?

I live right outside Philadelphia and I am looking for a considerate Toyota dealer to purchase a used car from. There is one near me, Sloane Toyota, who I wouldn't go to if they were giving the cars away. I went to look (am purchasing a car in about a month. I know exactly what I want). They showed me two cars that were not exactly what I am looking for. The salesman got the manager out and he kept pushing and pushing. I finally got up and left.
Does anyone know of a good dealer outside of Phila?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,291
In Joisey, I have had good experiences looking (not buying) at Runnemeade. Cherry Hill is nice, but I think they tend to be pricier, but it really depends on what you are looking for.

You can get internet quotes from Turnersville. Their prices tend to be competitive as quoted, and on the up and up.

We bought our Sienna 4 years ago from the internet guy at Conicelli toyota.Whole transaction was low pressure and low keyed

In South Jersey, convenient to Philly:

Turnersville has the best purchase prices, along with a big selection. Roger Penske's group owns this dealership. I can recommend salesman Larry Giordano.

Runnemede gets the nod for service (pricing and otherwise).

    Good luck.

I just wanted to share the great experience my wife and I had with this dealership. We have an '01 Audi S4 that the lease is up in August 04.

We went looking at the new Volvo S40 as the Audi was my car and my wife wanted the next new car to be something for her to use for commute (she drives a '01 Accent!). Anyways, the new 2004.5s were barely on the lot and after chatting to the salesman (Joe) and taking a drive we were interested.

We wanted a specific package and they found one at the docks and arranged for it to come to the dealer, no pressure. Once there, we got a deal that they paid the last 3 payments on the lease (they didnt want the car so we are turning it back in to Audi soon), put $1500 down and got $400 under sticker with 2.9% APR over 5 years, and all this with not great credit (575 score as we had a few problems in recent times). We were amazed!

After we took delivery we got an invite to the official launch of the new S40 at the dealer (was a great event with amazing food and even Xbox video games with Volvo rally cars!) and a week ago in the mail we got a "thank you" of a stadium chair!

I would actually recommend ALL the Rahal dealerships in the Wexford, PA area. They carry Mercedes, Volvo, Aston Martin and Jaguar and i dont think my wife and I will buy a car elsewhere now.

    Thanks for reading.
  • jasmith52jasmith52 Member Posts: 462
Well if you are happy with your deal then that's all that matters.

I see your deal a little different. The 2.9 percent financing is a Volvo Corporate incentive program on the car.

Those lease payments that were picked up by the Volvo dealer on the old Audi cost you about $1000. Had you waited until the end of your lease to buy the Volvo then you could have negotiated the price down to maybe $1400 (or so) under sticker. There is no free lunch regardless of what the Volvo salesman said. Somebody had to pay those last lease payments - and it wasn't the dealer.

However if you are happy with your deal and they treated you well then that's all that matters.
  • leeandginaleeandgina Member Posts: 38
Maybe you are right we could have saved money by waiting but buying a new car now dropped $300/month off our car payment and the audi can be returned without us having to pay those 3 final payments. Sticker on the car was $26395 and invoice is $24837. TMV price on Edmunds is $25895 and after taking into account the check we got from the dealer for the lease payments and handing over $1500 as a deposit we paid $25900 for the car. I dont consider that a bad deal.

Internet sales manager, Jeff Colarossi, was great. Low key, no pressure. Finance manager, Charley, was the same. Both knew their products very well and were honest. I belong to an organization that is a corporate partner with a Subaru, so it was a straight invoice deal (2005 Legacy GT Limited wagon, by the by). Super experience all the way around.

By far the easiest and most pleasant car purchases I have made were from this multi-franchise GM dealer at the Delaware shore. I live 130 miles from this dealer, but am fortunate to have a second home five miles from this dealer that I travel to most weekends. Getting my cars serviced in the northern Virginia area has become a royal pain due to traffic and my work schedule. It was taking me at least an hour one-way just to go 12 miles to the VA dealer, so I thought I would try the DE dealer for some needed service work.

I soon realized that I was dealing with very knowledgeable, honest folks. I could leave the car for service Sunday afternoon on the way home, and pick it up the following Friday. No games, no service done without my approval; they actually told me a couple of times that some service I thought was necessary was not needed! I even receive a follow-up phone call from the service manager after each visit--they in turn have received top marks on their service surveys. Because of my success with their outstanding service, I thought I would try the sales end of this dealership. I'm glad I did.

First car purchased from them was 2003 Olds Aurora, February 2003. I found the car in their internet inventory on February 25 and sent a price quote request. This car had been on their lot exactly one day. It was exactly what I wanted. I received a personal e-mail back from the internet manager with a very fair price. I called and sealed the deal over the telephone with the salesman the internet manager referred me to. Because I was already a service customer, they didn't even require a VISA or MC deposit to hold the car--just my word! I drove through the remnants of an ice/snow storm and picked up the car on February 28, the last day of the 0% financing. The F&I lady was superb. $89 doc fee. No mention of any mop/glo or other add ons, just gap insurance, IIRC. No pressure at all. She went line by line through the contract, explained in detail, and because she asked the right questions about my driving habits, I extended the 5 year/60K warranty (standard no cost extra on Oldsmobiles) an additional one year for additional $100! (I own four cars, don't ask!) I was in and out of F&I in less than 1/2 hour.

The salesman spent two hours going over features of the car upon delivery, programming the OnStar, etc. I received an "official" tour of the service area, and followup calls about the car, how I liked it, did I have any questions, etc. This car now has almost 14K miles, has had some nonmechanical issues (sunroof rattle, defective bose stereo speaker) that were corrected to my utmost satisfaction the first time brought in to be corrected. In fact, the car was freshly washed and vacuumed each time.

The internet manager is now the dealership's General Manager. He is a pleasure to deal with. I bought two more cars in May 2004 from this dealership and I could not be happier. They have received the highest survey marks possible each time. In fact, I have written comments on my surveys every time. I work in a high profile, service-related position so I quickly recognize and am appreciative of outstanding service. These folks are the epitome of just that.

If you are in the market for a GM product other than Cadillac, I highly recommend CP Diver, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. My salesman, the GM and the F&I lady were just first-rate.

I will be more than happy to relate my other two purchases at a later time, or as Macakabee would say....to be continued! Sorry for the long post.

This is what I consider a considerate buyer:

You don't have to set up an appointment, but if you do it helps. Please ask for the sales person you spoke with over the phone (if you did have an apt.) as we're on commission. If you can't make it then call and let us know.

We will be asking you questions: which car you like, your driving needs, wants etc.. but you should also tell us:

-Your mission for the day: are you here to gather information/ brochures, compare and test drive models, learn about our dealership, learn about finance specials? etc. I will give you all the time in the world even if you don't intend to buy that day, week, or even month. But if you're 6 months away from a purchase I'd save the test drive and haggling until you are closer to buying as not to waste both of our times. A test drive today will be forgotten in 2 weeks (the feel of the car), so why bother.
-Timeframe that you have for obtaining the vehicle and your budget.
-Are you the only decision maker or do other family members need to be there (wife, kids, girlfriend/boyfriend/mistress, uncles etc). Too many times we go back and forth negotiating and haggling with our manager to try and get the deal for you only to be told that "I can't buy, have to ask mother/wife/brother/sister etc." I don't haggle for fun especially if nothing will come out of it or if you are not planning to purchase that day.

Something about the car you don't like? Don't be shy, let us know. Sometimes we assume you like the car, go through the process of test driving, finding all the history or paperwork on it (especially used cars), and haggling only to be told "I have to think about it" If you are still at the thinking stage then why bother putting me, my manager, and yourself, and often your family through the lengthy car buying process. Same if you don't like the car or if you don't know what car you want. Price itself or discounts, in most cases, will not make you like the car if you disliked it from the start.

After gathering information/test drive, when you return to seal the deal or to actually buy, please ask for the same salesperson you originally dealt with (if you received good service) and please call that salesperson beforehand to let the know you're coming as we're all on commission, and it hurts to have spent one or two hours with you only to you come in on our day off, or having you taken by another salesperson.

Please be reasonable with the offers, we have to earn a living too. You wouldn't work for free so why should I? Thank you

Part 2. forgot to answer the other questions.

Test drive: take it for a few hours if you need but if you want to drive 4 totally different vehicles (SUV, coupe, truck, van) all thousands of $$$ apart in price then you probably won't be taken seriously. Narrow the field down, then go test drive.

Financing: give F&I opportunity to present you rates. If you think your bank has lower rates go that way or find out before hand.

Trade in: if you have a decent trade and our offer is close to "book value" present a reasonable counter offer. If you've been had by a shady car lot and overpaid for your car that you want to trade in, don't expect the dealer to overpay for it just because you did. Be realistic with the actual condition of your trade. If your trade has damage, or problems, we have to spend $$$ to fix it before we resell it. When customers come in and look at our used cars they want them to be mint, no dents, dings scratches, rips. All of that costs $$$!

You ask that we car buyers be 'reasonable with the offers' so you sales people will make a decent living.

My question: "Is your dealership reasonable when it sets the price or does it try to set the price as high as you can - whatever the market will bear?"

Heck, it's been so long since I've been here I forgot where I left off! Please forgive my absence from this board. As most of you know my Mother passed away in May of this year and I've been in the mourning and bereavement process and hopefully I will be back to my old self shortly. It hasn't been easy. There's not a day I don't think about my wonderful mother. I started reading the posts to try and catch up and I've got a lot of reading to do! On the positive side my boy that was stationed in Germany is now back in the states (Florida) with his lovely wife and his new son. My pride and joy! Mackabee III ! I have been hanging out at the Scion tC boards lately since Vic Jr. bought one when they were here in June. Back to reading.

The MSRP is set by the manufacturer. In my case at Honda, the MSRP is same across Canada, and all the dealers purchase the car at the same price across Canada.

For used cars we check what the market conditions are and set the price accordingly. there may be a little bit more margins in used cars than in new, but I've seen used cars sold at a loss, especially if they have been sitting on the lot too long.

You guys and gals here have been like an extended family to me. I have some terrible news to share with you. On October 28th I went in for a routine colonoscopy and I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I was sent immediately to the operating room where they removed a section of my colon. There was a tumor that was removed and it was malignant. It's a stage T3 which means there has been some spreading to the lymph nodes. I don't know how bad it is yet as I was just discharged from the hospital a week ago. My incision became infected so we are waiting for the wound to heal before any chemotherapy and/or radiation begins. I have a meeting with the oncology department on wednesday the 24th of this month. The last three weeks have been the worst of my life. My family is devastated but are holding up really well considering the circumstances. I just pray the cancer has not spread to other organs. All I ask is for your prayers and hope that everything will turn out for the best. God bless all of you.

    Hey Mackabee,

I hope and wish the absolute best for you and your family. I have been reading, mostly lurking, on Edmunds for a couple of years now and I have always enjoyed reading your posts. They are very entertaining and make my day a bit brighter. Hopefully knowing that I and, I believe, many, many others on Edmunds feel this way about you will make your day and many days ahead brighter too.

Like you she underwent an operation and even though it had spread and she is at stage 4 she is showing NO symptoms after the operation. it sounds like you did everything you were supposed to. That's what those routine checks are for, to catch these things quickly. So lets hope that you are in the good and capable hands of a caring medical staff, that your surgery was a total success in removing the tumor, that your incision heals quickly, and you can begin your treatment as soon as possible. Good luck, and we are wishing you a speedy recovery.

And we look forward to many more Mack stories down the road.

I'm looking forward to Part II - Mackabee beats cancer.

It's a terrifying thing to go through, but think how much more you're going to enjoy life after the cancer goes into remission. If the doctor hasn't told you to start making funeral arrangements, you're going to be fine, but you have to find a way to deal with the stress; it is *much* more dangerous than the cancer. I know people who have had strokes or heart attacks while dealing with something like this.

Meditation, prayer, and spending time with family are all good solutions. Exercise will decrease stress and help you sleep, *if* the dr. says it's ok.

Finally, chemo isn't as bad as you've heard. It's not a day at an amusement park, but the drugs to control the side effects have gotten *much* better. Good luck!!
  • loncrayloncray Member Posts: 301
Are you kidding? This is worth a massive, multi-part Mackabee story. Mack gets the bad news, Mack gets treated, Mack beats it - he could be in complete remission in a month (hoping) and still be telling the story a year from now! And everybody in this place will be cheering him on.
  • mackabeemackabee Member Posts: 4,709
Thanks guys! I'm working on it right now! I sent an update earlier to the guys and gals that e-mailed me. It was rather lenghty so I'll make it lenghtier here. ; ) Just kidding! Today was a very positive day at the hostpital. The only holdback (no pun intended!) is that the wound is not healing as planned. I was taken of the wound vac machine and went back to the old fashioned "put gauze and bandage" method to remove the "impurities" I will be going on a six month chemo program, twice a month or every two weeks with a mega dosage. Two days straight either at home or the hospital. Talked with Mrs. Mackabee and she feels more secure if we do it at the hospital that way I will have nurses and docs around. A full body CT scan is also planned to identify any spreading of the disease as right now only my upper half was scanned and it showed evidence of lymph node spread but not any evidence to nearby organs. Keep you posted! All of you have been great! Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and if you have to travel be safe!

You are a good guy and my prayers will continue to be with you.

I think this news may FINALLY drive me to have the same "inspection" done. It's something my doctor has never suggested so I sure as heck have never brought it up! :)

Still, I know at my age I'm overdue.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL of you!
  • bolivarbolivar Member Posts: 2,316
The full-length 'inspection' is not too bad. My wife has had several, and I finally decided on one. My doc also recommended it.

The laxative before the procedure didn't bother me, I had almost no after effects. Now they will put you to sleep (you'll never see the garden hose), and you will probably not remember the ride home and the next few hours.

If you've got the insurance or other funding, are over 55 or 60, I think this should be done.....
