Could be, but the hydroform meets the C-type rail towards the front of the cab, just behind the wheel well, not behind the cab. The Silverado brochure says the new frame is "tougher and more durable than its predecessor." In any case, when I think of cracking welds, it usually happens because the weld seam is very hard and brittle. But I was able to drill holes right through it with no problem when I installed some Air Lift pneumatic springs to the frame. The weld seams were actually soft, usually meaning not much likelihood for cracks. So what gives? I did not make the Ford comment, by the way.
mwinter1: hey, i got my truck today!!! did you get yours last weekend? only drove it 10 miles so far getting home. everything works great, no vibrations or porpoiseing, no clunking in seats, so far so good, handles great and i am very satisfied with it so far. let me know when you get your truck. jim k.
I bought a 2WD LT Ext. Cab in Pewter. Ordered it in mid-Sept 1998 and got it just before Christmas. The deal was $300 over invoice w/o much haggling. The dealer later told me that the only LTs they'd gotten in 1998 were specially ordered by customers.
Still looking for the replacement locking tailgate handle to go with my rolltop cover. I don't buy that story about the gov't forcing GM to drop it from their accessories catalog (sorry huntman). If that were correct, since almost all of the accessories offered by GM are availbale aftermarket as well, they couldn't sell much of anything for THE TRUCK. I haven't given up yet.
I don't like the Pop-N-Lock setup- what a pain to remove that little cover every time you open the gate. The powerbolt from Pace-Edwards might be OK ($100 installed), but I am concerned that it might fail if the handle were pulled hard.
I guess its the time and location. No dealer that I found is willing to do better than $800 over invoice, including one salesman who I have been dealing with for 5 years. The attitude is that they'll sell one anyway, so why deal.
Oh, well. In the scheme of things it probably doesn't matter much. An extra few hundred on a truck costing $27,000 really isn't a bug deal.
I'm envious of you folks out there getting trucks for $300-$500 or even $800 over invoice.
Where I live, there's only one Chevy dealer in town. This is where I purchased my current truck, a '96 2500.
When my lease came up, I wanted to get an LS 2500. They wanted $6,000 over invoice!!! A few weeks later they called me and offered $2,000 over invoice. I offered $1,000 over, and they wouldn't go for it.
I wound up keeping my '96 (took the purchase option at lease end). Just as well, because I'm trying to decide if I want a diesel or not in my next truck (in which case, Chevy isn't an option).
That is what I was told, the service manager could order anything in the catalog and more except the tailgate lock and cellular phone holder. Best of luck Huntman
Has anybody gotten the Sunset Gold color yet? How do you like it? What interior color did you get? I'm debating between Sunset Gold and Dark Carmine Red.
Cancelled Gibson and ordered two 2-chamber 40 series Flowmasters Mufflers for my 6.0. Going with 2.5" pipes out either side for a real dual exhaust. Hope theres enough back presure for the oxygen sensor. Might have to use some SuperTrap tips to create more back presure. Report coming Monday night. Also ordered Hypertech Power Programmer III. 339 bucks High Test gas is recommended. 17hp increase and firmer shift points.plus you can set it for speeds over the stock 97 mph.
I got a sunset gold LS extended cab Z 71 with 5.3 . I love the color does not show dirt as bad as a darker color. I got medium oak leather interior with bench seats, no regrets. I also recently got a roll-n-lock cover good for an increase of one mpg.
dave40 - are you going for cat-back system or replacing the entire system? Any reverse flow muffler should give you enough back pressure. I ran my last K2500 with a Rancho system (straight flow) and noted a loss of torque but it sure loved to rev much better than stock. It's a trade-off either way. The Borla system isn't all that bad, but is quite pricey.
FETZ, No need to be envious. Just keep shopping! They can't sell anything without buyers. Even if they are charging $2000 over invoice, someone must be paying, or they go out of business. Remember, buyer has all the power. Walk in there with the money and watch them salivate!
bdon, I saw a beautiful Dark Carmine Red over Sunset Gold Metallic two tone, with medium oak interior. Why not have your cake and eat it too?
Dave40, For true dual exhaust you have to have dual cats also. By the way, the Hypertech firmer shift points are hard on the transmission wet clutches. I have used it on my Z28. That, and the power tuning is worth a tenth or two at the track, but I went back to soft shifts to save my tranny.
Anyone got good advise on electronic trailer break controllers. Is there any special one that is a good one. Or any bad one's to stay away from. Looking at a Reese, Brakeman for 55.00.
The 6.0 has two Cats ! Does the 5.3 have only one? the 6.0 also has the MT-1 heavy-duty trans. So it should handle the firmer shifts. I'am replacing everything from the cats back with dual split-side exits. Looking for some AWESOME exhaust tips .
I have considered the carmine red over sunset gold. I've never been a big two-tone fan, but it's tempting because I like both of those colors. Since the bottom part of the truck will tend to be dirtier than the rest, it would also make sense to have the gold on the bottom. Thanks for the feedback.
I ordered a GMC 2500 XTND longbox 4X4 with the Carmine red/Sunset gold combo. I saw it on a shortbox, hope it looks even better on a longbox! Placed the order Feb 13th, don't even have a build date yet. Hope I can last!
Go with a tenkosha sentinal or tenkosha voyager brake controller. Inertia based. They have a web site. Available at most good trailer places. The voyager is the most popular ever made.
Well, I finally fired my Chevrolet Silverado dealership. The dealership (which I will call the House of Smoke and Mirrors), just wouldn't or couldn't do anything for me, much less help. I went to see them last Saturday (3-27-99) to inquire about if they had any more information about my order. Like, if they had the Vehicle Order Number yet! All I got was vague responses and another song and dance about it. I left it at that. I went to the local GMC dealer 3/4 mile away and inquired about a Sierra SLE. They were about to close, and I didn't have much time to talk to them. I went back on Monday (3-29-99). I asked about the same equipment as I was getting in the Silverado, 2wd, regular cab, long bed, 5.3, 3.42 locker, automatic, Z85, Z82, 40-20-40 seats, fog lights, Summit White/Storm Gray. They didn't have one on the lot, but would try to locate one for me. The next day they called to say that they found one 682 miles away, and wanted to know if I would accept it. I hemmed and hawwed a bit and said no. The next day I returned to order one instead, they said that they have a high allocaton and placed the order. They gave me a Vehicle Order Number right there on the spot. I was so happy that I went back to the Chevy dealer and canceled the Silverado and got a refund on my deposit, which I then used for the Sierra. Today, Thursday (4-1-99, April Fool) they called me to say that I have a build date of 5-3-99. All this has happened in 4 days. I wasted almost a month at the Chevy dealership. If I had known this earlier, I would stopped in then. Chalk one up on lessons learned. Now the countdown clock has started. I can't wait.
All this says is that we are at the mercy of the individual dealers or the individual sales people. It is not a Chevy, GMC, Ford or Dodge thing. You get good ones and bad ones. So it goes...
You know a guy has to do what a guy has to do! I just got tired of being jerked around by the Chevy dealer. After repeated phone calls and going out of my way to stop in. All I got was the old song and dance and vague answers and getting a snow job. You talk to them one minute and they say one thing, call the an hour later and are told something 180 out of what they just told you an hour before.
The only conclusion I can come up with is: 1 they a protecting their allocaton by shopping around the other dealerships. 2. They have no allocation. Or, 3. They thought I wasn't serious and they would wait me out.
In fact when I canceled out the order, they (the dealer) still hadn't received the order, or received a preference, so they said.
The GMC dealer told me that there just are no Sierras for stock available in the entire southeast region. The trucks are being sold as soon as they are taken off the transport.
I had been to this particular GMC dealer before, but decided to go to Chevy first. That's my first mistake. However, I'm happy that the GMC dealer gave me the allocation and build date as fast as it did. I couldn't believe it would only take 4 days from the first visit until I walked out the door with the allocation and build date in my hand. Now it's just the waiting to contend with. I just hope my trade-in makes it til then.
So how did the Chevy and GMC compare price wise? Did you get somewhere near invoice on the order? I had went by the local GMC dealer yesterday (here in Albuquerque) and thought maybe I would give them a shot at my business. The way I see it is price is about the only bargining point as between my business going to the Chevy dealership or the GMC place, that is unless I feel like the Chevy place is treating me like they treated you and then I would go to the GMC place.
I plan on ordering within the next few weeks. I still want to go drive a 1500 with bucket seats to see if I want to go that route. Any feedback on this or other issues would be appreciated. I am planning on the 1500, 4x4, towing package, Z-71, 5.3l engine, automatic, autotrac. As I said above I don't much care as between Chevy/GMC. I will likely choose the LS or SLE trim level.
knobby Chevy and Gmc trucks come down the same [non-permissible content removed]. line. We get chevy trucks that will have a gmc horn pad on them or stickers will be on the wrong truck. They are exactly the same now. Didn't use to be long time ago but now they are the same. Sounds like the chevy dealer was a smuck.
The Chevy dealer (the House of Smoke and Mirrors), in just show how crappy their service department is. A friend of mind that I work with has a 96 Chevy Impala SS LT1. He bought the car at another dealership locally, and took it to them for some minor work (I think it was power windows, but it wasn't engine related) that shouldn't have taken more than an hour to complete. After more than 2 hours of waiting, he asked the service manager what was taking them so long, it didn't take him long to find out that they had his engine almost half why torn down, and drained out all the fluids (engine, transmission and rearend). He had a full fledge conniption right there. Since, he had not planned to be there more than an hour at the most, it took some time to get his car back together again. He had to call into work to take a vacation day until could his car back. The dealer even had the gonads to charge him $600.00 for the work performed. Needless to say. He had another full fledge conniption. To get the car back, he had to pay it. He has since sued the dealership over this and won. He has said that he would go 100 miles out of his way, just to take his car somewhere else.
Do you remember when the topic was about the steering pulling to the right, and someone said his dealer told him that trucks are now delivered with a slight pull to the right in case a driver falls asleep at the wheel. Well, I just told my dealer that mine pulled to the right slightly, and that I wanted it straightened out. They said nothing about a "designed in" pull to the right, but adjusted camber, caster, and stabilizer bar preload. Well, I just drove it 800 miles on Easter vacation, and it is now delightfully dead-on arrow straight. I love it! Demand more, one-percenter's!
Do any of you know where I can purchase, provide a manufacturer, or a web site for what is known as a half cap or sleeper for my long bed? It's like a real short cap about +/- 3 foot deep. It sits behind the cab across the bed rails, and utilizes the sliding rear window, but doesn't extend fully into the box? Some even extend fully down into the box with an excess door in it (like an extended cab with a rear door). All the websites I have visited have nothing but full length caps.
Okay....I have a couple of things that I need help with. I have a '99 Silverado, 4wd, ext cab, Z-71 and it has 500 miles on it. Since I picked it up, I noticed a low frequency humming right around the 40 mph mark. If I accelerate to 45 mph, then let off the pedal to about 38 mph, slightly hit the pedal the vibration noise starts sround the 40 mph mark and seems to continue on past that speed. Under 40mph, nothing. Has anyone else noticed this? I haven't spoke to the dealer yet. It seems to be coming from under the driver's side as I can tell.
Second: I keep my back seat folded up most of the time and I was wondering if there are any good mats that would cover the whole back area, even under where the seat would be if it were down. Maybe even something with a lip, where I could throw my gear, boots, etc. Also, are there any quality carpet/rubber mats out there specifically designed for the '99 Silverado?
mwinter1, Check topic #624 There are a few of us with the noise you talk about! I am looking for the same Rubber mats for the rear area. Have not found them yet but Husky has mats for the new truck. I plan to call and see if it covers the whole area.
Knobby, Try this site. It has the best of both worlds. A short cap and a full cover in one. Plus their animation is neat and tells the whole story. They also responded to my questions very quick. http://www.flextop.com/index.html
Thanks for the tip (I have bookmarked it's web page), and I will consider it. However, I would like to see other models and types before I make up my mind.
I'm driving the 6L, 2500 and have been getting around 10.5 mpg loaded with a slide in pop up truck camper, canoes and gear. The truck has handled very nicely by the way. That gives me around a 250 mile driving range, which is very disappointing. The 26 gal. tank is not enough for my needs as I plan on making some trips into the back country off road. I really don't want to haul gas in containers.
Does anyone know if an after market auxiliary tank is available for the Silverado (2500, ext cab, sb)? I could really use another 10 or so gallons for long trips and forays into the back country.
Well, I bit the bullet and ordered a Silverado last Saturday. Dealer claims they have been getting a good allotment each week and is supposed to put in the order today. Hope to have a message at home tonight with a Vehicle Order Number. Dealer claimed it would probably take 10 weeks to get truck. Based on stories I am hearing here lately I'm hoping that is pessimistic.
Ordered a Pewter over Gray two tone ½ ton Silverado 4WD LS equipped with a 5.3L, 3.73 rear end, Z71 and trailer'ing packages, as well as manual bucket seats, fog lights, and big tires. Got the bucket seats instead of the bench seat because the center part of the bench seat can't be moved and is therefore unusable except for small kids. My teenage son tried the center seat and his knees were in his face and he was sitting on the seat belt receptors. I tried it also and found it unbearable. The cup holders that attach to the dash also get in your way. My son decided that if he was going to ride in the truck it would be in the passenger seat or back seat and he wanted the rear vents the console had for when he was in the back seat.
Based on the squirming the sales manager did and the stories I've seen here, I think I got a decent deal. Am paying invoice plus about $500 plus sales tax. The $500 covers 1% advertising fee ($300) and $200 D&H fee. (I figure the D&H is profit for the dealer but I've heard the advertising fee really does go to the regional headquarters and not into the dealer's pocket.) Also have to pay $28 state registration fee. The state waits till you go to get your plates and then really sticks it to you for registration. Visited two different Chevy dealers on opposite sides of town (bought on return trip to the first one) with numbers in hand (invoice, holdback, MSRP) and had the deal done in about two hours including driving time. Fastest deal I've ever made on a new vehicle. Both dealers really wanted to order the truck for me.
jmscolorado, Those plates are going to add about 400-500 bucks. Your deal works out about like mine was. The ad fee is added to their invoice. They do have to pay it, but it gets passed along to us. Welcome to Colorful Colorado! Hope you got it from Burt!
Been enjoying everyone's comments and suggestions while waiting for my new LS Extended Cab 2WD which was ordered Feb 20 from an Atlanta area dealer. The dealer called last week and said it was supposed to be built on April 4 or 5 and that I should have it by April 20th. Pretty darn close to the 8 week estimate if it holds. Anyway, I'm looking for extended warranty advice. I know there's a different generic topic for warranties, but am looking for specific Silverado advice. I'm thinking that the extra $1K or so might be a good investment but not totally convinced. Any of you Silverado pros have any advice for a new (soon, I hope) owner?
Hubbap1, Check out Transfer Flow for an aftermarket gas tank. They've been around a while and have both replacement tanks and in the bed tanks. Used a lot in the RV business. They also have a list of dealers by state. http://www.transferflow.com Good luck.
Thanks for the info wesly1. I checked out the site you posted - they may have just what I need. This site has been great for digging up info and just learning about pick-ups.
gcatron, We must be thinking alike. Since this is a NEW truck I thought the extended warranty would be a good investment. I got some prices and took them with me when I picked up my truck. The GM Major Guard plan is about 25% higher than most of the others like Warranty Direct. While completing the paperwork in the finance guy's office he pitched the GM plan. When I mentioned the others he said most dealers would not honor them because of the way they pay and the prices they set. I asked him if this dealer would and he said they only honor the GM plan. The service manager affirmed this. The finance guy said he would take $200 off of any of the 6 year plans. The 72/60 plan was $1015. Less $200 would be $815. That plan would cover my truck during payoff plus 1 year. I told if he would give it to me for $700 I would take it and he said OK. When I got the paper work and warranty card from GM in the mail it was for the 72/100 plan. Hope it's their goof and not just a typo. More importantly I hope I never have to use it!
Yesterday morning I was traveling on I-40 between Flagstaff and Albuquerque. I ordered a Silverado 6 weeks ago, so I'm always scoping out the new ones when I'm on the road (there doesn't seem to be too many in this neck of the woods yet). Anyway, I came up on a new (no plates yet) sunset gold truck and on the tailgate was "GMC" on the right hand side and "Silverado" on the left. The truck came from Cake Chevrolet in Winslow. I guess that it sort of validates 26andrew1's comments on post 133. Anyway, I don't know if it was intentiaonal or an oversight, but it gave me a chuckle!
Ordered and purchased a manual tranny 1/2 ton silverado. Could not order the trailer towing package. Plan to tow a trailer with electric brakes. Have installed a Reese receiver hitch. Only had 4 wires to the bumper. After speaking to my Chevy parts guy, ordered the "Heavy Duty Trailering Conversion" kit. Part number 12495932, about $84. Includes a 7 pin blade trailer recepticle and a wiring harness that runs all the way to the underhood bussed electrical center. What it didn't include was the little pigtail that connects under the dash plug to my brake controller. It is a little plastic plug that all Silverados have mounted just above the parking brake, and just below the plastic dash. My parts guy can't seem to find it to order it........
Anybody get one of these pigtails with their truck. Have a part number? (Every Ford I have purchased comes with this pigtail when ordering a trailer)
Dooh! Parts guy just called and said that the plug under the dash is the diagnostic port. Must be another brake controller pigtail under the dash somewhere. Will look tonight. Anybody hook up a brake controller yet?
markbuck-- When ordering the tow package the truck comes equiped with the wiring harness installed of course. Under the dash and back where most trucks used to have it's fuse panel, years ago.Back of the park break mechanizm. Theres a black plastic cover with a plastic nut holding it on. Take the cover off and there is places to plug different wireing harness into the truck, one of those is specially for the trailer break controller. With the Tow Package the truck came with the harness and plug for the break controller. Not sure what you have. Sounds like you are installing what I have tried to describe.
Zonk1...Thanks for the reply... That'll give me a starting point for my negotiations next week. If they give me any flak I can tell 'em that I know someone who got 72/100 for $700.00 and surely they don't want another dealer to undercut their price! Still a lot of money but I just don't like the idea of being out of warranty while I'm still making those payments! Just about any little problem and you've made your money back. Where is your dealer? Best of luck and let's hope that money's wasted!
