Some of these I owned two cars at the same time, bought them used. Such as the Porsche 914, '98 VW Beetle, and '69 VW Bus. There were others I forgot the model year. Cars were cheaper in those early days and one could enjoy a sports car along with a regular sedan. For example, the '75 BMW bought new was $5,495 and the loaded '72 Riviera was $5,295.

Yes, it did and it was fun to scare tailgaters with. I could push the Reverse button slightly and turn on the backup lights. Of course, that wasn't a real good idea, but it got them off my tail quick! They didn't realize that at 65mph I couldn't suddenly be backing up. LOL!
Did a cop that way once, boy was he ticked off!
That '57 Plymouth gave me so much trouble I never bought Chrysler products again. The other troublemaker was the used 914, got rid of it fast. The buyer rolled it the hard way! It was just a ball. He walked away with a broken collar bone.

2 v.s. 2 who will win the match? We'll find out in 10 years or sooner depending on this
67 Ford LTD Brougham, Light Green Metallic, bought used
71 AMC Gremlin, dark green, bought used during gas crisis-cost more than new!
81 Pontiac T1000, tan, bought new, first manual for me, couldn't drive it when I bought it
85 Chevy Nova, light blue, Toyota Corolla clone--bought used, put over 100,000 miles on it, then gave to parents who added 50,000 more!
89 Ford Taurus, white, program car (got that out of my system)
92 Nissan Maxima SE, white, five speed
94 Chrysler Concorde LX, white, company bought car back after it spent more time in shop than on road
95 Olds LSS, white (great car)
98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, white (ditto)
00 Chevy Impala LS, white (127,000 miles and counting)
What's next? Either a Mazda6 wagon or hatch or a next generation Subaru Legacy wagon or even a Ford Five Hundred...just don't know.
I do know I want SIRIUS and want to look at the hatchback 6 when it arrives! And I can just about bet that whatever it is will be white.
Thanks!
brozhnik - I've heard the leather seats are much more comfortable than the cloth for some reason. Maybe that needs to factor into your decision. I've also heard that the after-market leather is better, so it's a matter of choice, cost and convenience.. However, ppl have told me that the seats in Toyotas and Hondas are more comfortable. I am fairly comfortable with my seats in the Mazda 6, but I haven't been in them for lengthy periods of time.. and compared to my old car..there is a big difference.. Plus, soft seats sometimes hurt ppl's backs..depending on how they sit.. So somewhat hard seats are not a bad idea..esp on long trips.. Course it also depends on your age and stuff.
Mark. : )
- more bolstering and support
- better material (quality not slipperiness)
than the cloth options in the Mazda 6. You may want to try out the leather option or consider adding aftermarket leather (about the same sub-1000 cost for good quality).
As for my experience - I have personally not felt a moment of discomfort in this car (6i, leather, power seats) including during trips out of town for over an hour, and one 450+ mile round trip (done in two 200-mile runs).
Nope, didn't like the dealer's attitude. They were asking $20,190 for an '02 Civic EX. Tacked on $495 for "free" car washes each time I brought my Honda in for service. I refused to pay it, they said they would not sell the car unless I did.
And about Honda's seats, that's the reason I sold the '98 Accord back to them in 30 days - misserable seats, very painful. Cloth-covered rocks.
jtki: You should drive your new 6 at moderate acceleration and speeds for the first 600 miles, no hard starts. The engine is stiff and that's probably why the gear changes are slow. Don't expect it to kick-down quickly. Drive it at least 1000 miles before calling your dealer. Watch for changes, such as getting better in shifting and improved acceleration as you add miles. Do not rev it over 5000rpm, but do vary your rpms and speeds, do not hold a steady speed for a long time. On the highway bring it up to speed and then let it slow down a little, and repeat that. Don't use the cruise control until after 1000 miles and not for long stretches. Your car will do better after you get at least 3000 miles on it.
otoluva: Brand new 68 and 72 Rivieras? I wish I was old enough to have that experience.
No you don't, you would be too old to enjoy the great cars out there today.
The '72 was sold when the '03-'04 Oil Imbargo hit, when gas shot up from 38-cents a gallon to $1.00. Those Rivs got only 13mpg average. It wasn't just the higher price, many gas stations limited how much you could buy. The Government screwed up the distribution system so stations had to do that. If 5 gallons was the max and you also needed a gallon for your lawnmower you were out of luck. Overnight, the orignal Accord's price went from $3,500 to over $6,000 and at some dealers $7,000.

Average car loans were 8% for 24 months and 10% for 36 months. Today's 60 months loans were unheardof, much less 0%. There were no credit cards and most buyers paid at least 20% down by trad-in or cash.

Yes, her seats are softer, but I get a numb-butt after about an hour of driving. I think they're terrible after an hour even though they initially feel nice. In my 6i, I've yet to get uncomfortable in the seats ever- to my amazement, I admit.
I'm tall and skinny- this may skew my results a little.
that's with the cloth seats.
leather. aftermarket (and maybe the factory too) felt much better comfort-wise.
1976 Ford LTD (dark brown, bought for me by my Dad)
1977 Ford LTD (light yellow, also bought by Dad)
1978 Ford Galaxie 500 (sort of a lime green, also Dad's choice)
1978 Ford LTD (another dark brown one from Dad)
1983 Renault Alliance (light blue, my choice, 1st car that I bought myself in 1988, I'm embarrassed to say, a total lemon)
1986 Pontiac Sunbird (dark blue, bought used in 1990)
1994 Saturn SL1 (medium red, my first new car)
1996 Saturn SC2 (dark green, my first new "sporty" car)
1997 Mercury Sable LS (gold, bought as a demo in early 1998, thought I needed the additional room)
1999 Toyota Camry Solara SE V6 (black, bought new in June 1999, my first and last black vehicle, was stolen only months later in Nov. 1999)
2000 Toyota Camry LE V6(silver, bought new to replace the Solara in Dec. 1999)
2003 Mazda6s (Lapis blue, special ordered, bought new, picked up on July 25, 2003)
My list seems rather long for my age, (kinda surprised me) but a lot of my early cars (the many Fords bought by Dad) were short-lived. They were all mid-70's cars bought in the early to mid-1980s, but they didn't last long. To be fair, they were not in the best mechanical shape to begin with. The newer cars I bought were chosen due to changing needs and preferences. The Mazda6 is the first car where I have everything that I want in a single vehicle, it's sporty, stylish, reliable and practical. And it's got all the options that I want. So it's finally a "keeper" for me.
I've have a lot of different colors of cars, but I only started choosing colors, according to my preference, in 1994. However, blue seems to be more dominant in my list, which makes sense. It is my favorite color and I have a lot of blue clothes, more so than any other color. So I made the right choice with my Lapis Blue 6, even though I almost got a Sepang Green for the uniqueness factor.
Either way, I finally got the right car in the right color and I'm happy with it. Doing this list was very interesting, as well as reading other people's lists.
There is no way to keep the AC from coming on in defrost mode. For most people, it is a desirable function. Venting just air to the windshield is a prime way to cause interior fogging.
68 Triumph TR-250 my first car used (bought it in 1974)
84 Pontiac J2000 new
92 Ford Escort new
03/07 Mazda 6i
Yep, been driving for 27 years and have only owned four cars. Furthermore, the TR was $1600, the J2000 and the Escort were around $9k each, I spend as much on the Mazda as all the other three cars combined. There is a little cheating here though, I drove my brothers TR-4A for a year or two and my parent's Oldsmobile Cutlass station wagon (my only experience with a V8 (sigh)) (Also, who can forget my brother's SAAB, older model, looked like a little Buck Rogers spaceship, had a V4 and a manual shift on the steering column (No, I'm not making this up.) The Pontiac was a piece of crap, will never buy a Pontiac again, may never buy GM again. Also, incidentally, the Ford Escort has 263K miles on it, never had major repair, (replaced the alternator twice, that's it) and still runs fine (clutch is getting thin, still it works) and I'm keeping it until it blows up. Oh, btw, the 92 Ford Escort is the twin of the Mazda Protege and has Mazda engine and drive train. Did that go into my Mazda buying decision? You bet!
I've read the seat discussions, and, I guess, to each his own. I am fairly tall and not so skinny ([non-permissible content removed]) and I have the cloth seat in the 6i and they are fine, though it is accurate to say they are fairly hard and the material is fairly, well, um abrasive? I injured my back a couple months ago, and while it was healing I actually liked the firmness. The only thing I don't like about the cloth is that the door arm rest is made of the same material and resting your arm on it is uncomfortable. Also, the seats are pretty good but not great sports seats, that is, the car goes around corners a lot better than the seats can hold you in place. Having said that, I would still like to get some aftermarket leather: anyone know of any great places in the Washington DC area? My gold standard for seats is still the Volvo S60, but these weren't too bad in comparison to them.

I do not know what is in the security or lux pkg.
The order mixes and required option package combos are still a bit confusing and if somebody wants to post them..email me your fax number and i will send it over. I don't have the time to list them all today.
Look like the MPV is getting some substantial changes...which was news to me.
Arghh!!!!!! Dammit!
"roof mounted antenna replaces glass antenna."
Do you know why?
Wow - if Yellow is being dropped, I'm extra glad I got that color - makes my car that much more rare!! :-D It was probably a hard-to-sell color, though.
Roof-mounted antennae as in, the stubby-type antennae that's on the hatchback overseas?
It'll be interesting to see what those new packages consist of. Anything public on this info yet? Pictures or anything?
Thanks Rich!
1. No Yellow or Steel Grey? The 1st year owners' vehicles will become special, sought after one sin the used car market now
2. What, 8-way power seats only with auto transmission? When will mazda learn?
3. All interior colors and no-spoiler option with Sport Package - VERY smart move! I might have waited to get a SP with grey interior and no spoiler!
4. Different SP bumpers? Pictures!!!???
5. Roof mounted antenna? Wow - I'm glad I have the window mounted one. Are they having problems, aor do thy just want to go for a more 'Euro' look? I'm happy - I hate AM/FM enough already!
6. Subjective - but titanium window switches? Might go OK with black or Grey interiors - but NOT with beige! Lets see how this pans out.
Thanks, Rich!
As for roof mounted antenna, I don't know why, are we going backwards in technology? I'm glad I'm getting a 2003 with in-glass antenna. Less protrusions, and more aerodynamic. Anyone notice bad reception with their current radios in mazda6's?
Wonder what's in the luxury and security pkg. If ABS is not available standlone, it must be included in a pkg with SAB/SAC.
I beat both of you...;)
As far as the antenna is concerned, I don't have any problems with the reception of my glass mounted antenna, which is why I wondered why Mazda changed that. I'd guess that a roof mounted antenna is cheaper than an in-glass antenna.
I want 17s!!!!!
The addition of the available stand-alone 17" wheels to all models is great, as is getting rid of the premium package. If ABS/TCS isn't a stand-alone any longer, I wonder if that comes with leather as the luxury package?
The packages are way, way different now. Good thing!
