There's no trying about it. Where I live there are a ton of 6i and 6s cars around. The 6i w/o the manual tranny is a dog and they offered no rebate on the 6s w/1SE until this week. I got an email today from a dealer on a high msrp car I asked about a month ago. It's still sitting on his lot.

The rebates will continue to be around and get better as long as the cars are not selling. It's a buyers market for the Mazda 6. Unfortunately that means residual value will be terrible for a long time down the road.

Just did a quick check on Mazda's wonderfull website. There are 133 available within 50 miles of my zipcode. 87 i models and 46 s models. Plenty of inventory indeed.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Yeah, I think Mazda is playing games with the web site. Two weeks ago a local dealer told me about their inbound 04s. Those cars were still not listed on the web site the last time I checked.

Came back to my Steel Grey 6s from pumpkin picking this afternoon and an identical 6s was parked next to it!!!
AT, Steel Grey, non-sport packedge, SAB/SAC. So much for exclusivity!

However, it is nice to see the volume picking up.

    Mark. : (

    Awesome!

Sucks about the lost exclusivity, though, You sure it wasn't yoour evil (or good!) twin from another dimension?

Same thing happened to another MZ6 owning friend recentl, except he has clear corners on his Steel Grey!

Shoulda bought Blue - I have yet to see a clone (although my dealership had a clone in stock at the time I bought mine!)

I hardly think Mazda dealers have an excess of Mazda6 cars, at least no more than other brands. I'll bet if you checked for the number of Accords within 50 miles of your home, you'd find just as many as the 6. Probably more.............in any case, website inventories are notoriously unreliable. They're probably updated barely twice a month.

The site lists SOME w/in 100 miles from my WestCentral IL zip. After contact no
    i w/LeftLegFlexor...although listed.

I read a lot of problems in the Problem and Solution page. Was wondering how everyone's Mazda 6 doing?? Mine's a 6i, AT, SAB/SAC, Premium with 1400 miles - no CEL problems, no bad smell; overall, pleased to date.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Not all those posts are problems, so read them all to get a better idea of the car.

Saw a 6 on a used car ad list this morning in the paper. A Chrysler and Lincoln Mercury dealer in NJ had one listed. It was a 5 speed manual with like 5400 miles on it. I see some 03 Accord's, 02+ Camry's and 02+ Altima on used car lists too. People sure get tired of cars fast.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
    Perhaps it was a demo.

    Or the owner died.

    Or went bankrupt.

    There could be 1000 reasons.

    Or more.
  • carguy58carguy58 Member Posts: 2,303
it wasn't at a Mazda dealership so I don't think it was a demo.

I think probably somebody traded it in for a Lincoln or a Mercury. After all can't you get a discount if you buy a Ford product if you previously bought a Mazda The S-Plan comes to mind. But your right there could be 1,000 reasons.
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Demos these days are frequently sold at dealerships that do not sell that model. They go for higher prices and do not take away a new car sale. This is especially true when one owner has several dealerships...
  • seafseaf Member Posts: 339
I have the same config as you except I've got about 2000 miles on it and no problems at all. Last weekend while helping a friend to move, I put in a minor ding on the door. I felt really stupid for doing it. Oh well, I think the rest (hopefully not many in the future) will be a little easier to deal with emotionally.

In case anybody hasn't cracked up their 6 yet. I will be the first to say that I totalled mine out on the 23rd. I was broad sided on the passenger side by and older olds going 55 miles an hour. I am here to tell about it so I guess that should speak for itself on the safety features. Air bags deployed properly and I had my seat belt on. Though I think I have a permanent seat belt bruise, I came out of this accident pretty unscathed. My hat off to Mazda. Hope to be purchasing another by next week. If I can find one close enough. Man what a loss!!
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Did you have the Side Air Curtains?

Are you going to get them in the next one?
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Thank goodness, Chicagocat, you came out the way you did!

    Thanks for letting us know.

Are going to get another Mazda6?
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Glad to hear you're ok. Hope you're doing fine - out of the shock stage.

Please let us know if you had SAB/SAC.

  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Remember some of the sales people here say people aren't interested in SAB/SAC and that for most people it is not a deal breaker. I would rather have a safety feature than a moonroof or leather. Neither a moonroof or leather is much help in the horrible event of a collision.

I still think it borders on immoral for Mazda to bundle this safety equipment with what amounts to high profit gee-gaws...

All I KNOW is my next car WILL have SAB/SAC and it will NOT have a moonroof OR leather.

Years ago, Mazda used to package ABS with moonroofs for the same reason. Apparently the Mazda way of thinking is: They want safety equipment, make them pay for high profit options. It isn't a matter of money for me, though. It's a matter of I do NOT want a car with a moonroof (sacrifices some structural integrity and for what?) or leather (hot in summer, cold in winter, environmental issues as well for some)

This may actually move me down to a Mazda3 (talk about unintended consequences) or into a Subaru or even Malibu Maxx....
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
    I agree with you John.

    Simple packages:

    ABS/SAB/SAC - Safety
    leather+moonroof - Luxury
GFX - spoiler, skirts, foglights, 17" rims
    BOSE - stand-alone

    This would make everyone happy.

The 3 looks to be better in terms of packages at least in Canada.

I am still waiting on the wagon. I can't imagine that MazdaUSA will require a moonroof on the wagon OR leather in order to get SAB/SAC. Kind of defeats the wagon purpose, now wouldn't it? Plus wagons attract families (and less cops) and families care about safety. I hope Mazda realises that...
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
I should probably add it has been a long wait, and still isn't over. Mazda has probably lost some sales while people like me who are waiting get to the point they can't wait no more!

I really wanted an '03 Mazda 6i to replace my fantastic, '91 Protegé but the 6i's 4 speed AT and the 4 cyl. engine were a crude match in my opinion. So I bought an '04 Honda Accord EX-L 4 cyl. which includes side curtain air bags. The Honda is excellent, so far--I'll still always have fond feelings for Mazda, though. Anyway, my reason for posting here is to encourage any of you to see this site:

    http://www.hwysafety.org/news_releases/2003/pr082603.htm

It certainly makes good sense to choose a car with the head curtain air bags.....richard

That was NOT me. Nuh uh. No way. I was cleaning out my cat's litterbox when that was posted.
  • pzevpzev Member Posts: 807
    "This would make everyone happy."

Not exactly. It's basically impossible to make everyone happy. Some people like leather and want it but don't want a moonroof. This seems to be one of the tougher combinations to get on any car. Getting a moonroof without leather is a lot easier. Personally I don't want a moonroof under any circumstances but on a more expensive car I expect leather to be in it.

    johnclineii & dinu01:

STOP IT! I can't take all this common sense discussion. It is just so frustrating to be told that the car I would like to buy cannot be had without a sunroof because I want some safety stuff. Especially after reading that article from a few posts ago, the SAB/SAC is now mandatory for me.

Hopefully, as you suggest, maybe the wagon will not require a moonroof to get the SAB/SAC. Better yet, since most states require motorcylusts to wear approved helmets, maybe they should require all cars to be sold with SAB/SAC ???
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Eventually we'll get to that. Just like front airbags, 3rd brake light and DRLs in Canada.

I'm about to purchase a V-6 Mazda 6. I am deciding between two slightly different versions -- one is the Sport Pkg. and the other is the Sport Value Pkg. Both have all the same additional options, same shade of silver, and look virtually identical (front air dam/rear apron etc.), except that the Sport Pkg has the sport suspension and 17 inch wheels. I've test-driven both and have noticed a difference between the two, in regards to handling, but not a huge one.

Is there anyone out there that has driven both types repeatedly, who can attest to any marked difference and lend a word of advice that will assist in my decision-making process? Quick note -- the Sport Package car I'm looking at comes to about $800 more than the other one. Is it worth it? Also, that same Sport Pkg model is a 'demo' car with nearly 2000 miles on it. Is that a risky purchase? I already have a quote $300 below invoice and am contemplating going lower. Any thoughts on all this would be much appreciated ASAP as I'm looking to make a purchase this morning (Mon 29th).
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
    I wouldn't buy a demo - I know how I drove the Protege and 6 demos - you REALLY have to test-drive it :)

    So get a new one.

    Dinu
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
There is no "sport suspension". The small handling difference between the two cars you are looking at due to the wheels.

IMO $300 below invoice for a demo with 2000 miles is way too much.
  • jblo76jblo76 Member Posts: 2
Thanks Dinu and mazda6s -- the dealer has been telling me that the Sport Value Pkg.'s suspension has stiffer coils (among other things) therefore making it a "sport" suspension, much different than the other one. Is this just not true. Is he complete BS?

Between a Sport Value Pkg (85 miles) and a demo with the Sport Pkg (over 1900 miles on it), which one would you choose -- all other things being equal...price, looks etc.?

Don't get me wrong. I like the car and I'm going to buy an '04 but... I was at the US Grand Prix at Indy yesterday. Over the entire weekend, driving there and back, among 125,000+ potential buyers parking at the track, I saw exactly two. Mazda has some selling to do.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
No other tweaks. Seriously BS-ing you.

"Better yet, since most states require motorcylusts to wear approved helmets, maybe they should require all cars to be sold with SAB/SAC ??? "

Probably not for that reason. PA just dropped that law a few weeks ago. The motorcyclists are already riding around al fresco. They're all crazy!
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
    "Is he complete BS?"

Yes. He should do a little more reading and a little less BSing.

If you like the handling with the 16s, I would take the one with the Sport Value Package. You can always add the 17s later if you decide you really need them. If you gotta have the 17s, take the demo.

Dealers sometimes get compenstated for demo units, but they'll never tell you about it. They should be able to give you a better price on the demo unit. Was the demo unit ever registered? If so, it's actually a "used" car and you are the second owner. And, I've heard that in some states a car can not be sold as "new" if it has more than a certain number of miles on it. Can anyone confirm this?

The Sport Value Package with less miles - no question! Miles on a car may or may not be a good thing, but chances are its been driven hard! I refused to compromise on that issue when I bought mine with 2.7 miles on it. In fact I would probably even refuse a car with 85 miles on it, but that's just me :)

Screw that demo and the dealer. First of all, your salesman is either a liar, or inept. Either way, not good.

$300 below invoice? Lol. Demo is another word for USED. That offer is an insult in my book.

Any A/C problems with your 6?

It was pointed out the A/C stinks in the 6 in the MAXX-vs-6Wagon-vs-Jetta wagon-vs-etc forum.

    No stinking A/C here either.
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
... the person is a GM fanboy! Nuff said!

Slander doth a stink raise, although my Mazda 6's AC system doth not! (Bless its soul!)
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Yeah, I was a bit taken back by his remark - after all, I didn't hear anything about the 6's A/C to worry about. Anyways, if someone likes the MAXX over a 6, they're not OUR type of driver :)

    Twisties anyone?

No problems here either, though I've only used it a few times in the past two months of ownership.
  • cookie01cookie01 Member Posts: 369
damn, drove about 3 miles with the emergency brake on last night. Didn't notice till I got home. I never saw a light on the dash (maybe it was only partly engaged?)
What should I look for as far as problems? This morning everything seemed to work very well.
Does this effect my regular braking?
  • kstukstu Member Posts: 13
The AC is on every day here in Florida. It works very well. We never use the high fan speed and even the hottest days we use low fan speed once the car cools down. Who's complaining??!

Cookie...I doubt you hurt anything, just don't do that anymore. If the brake was set hard, you would have noticed the drag. Even so, Three miles would have done no noticeable damage.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Driving with it on can damage the rear brakes. It only acts on the rear brakes, and they would get really hot, which is what would cause the damage. But, if the lever was only part way engaged it may not have caused any damage at all. Try this - with the car running, take the parking brake fully off and then raise the lever slowly, watching for when the light comes on. Since you said the light was not on when this happened, that will tell you how far you actualy had the brake on last night. Do this with the car on an incline if you can. If the car will roll freely at the point just before the light comes on, the parking brake was probably not dragging last night and you probably did no harm. Otherwise, it's possible you damaged something and I would have a brake shop take a quick look at it.

Haven't posted in a while: just turned over 5000K on my car and no problems; Well, did kick a plastic cover off something under the steering wheel.

AC works fine, never cranked the fan above the second to bottom notch; it doesn't cool down super fast but then doesn't feel like a blast either, more like central air in a house.

Had a lot of fun driving around southwest West Virginia (Coalwood, home of Homer Hickam author of Rocket Boys) Far Western VA and Eastern Kentucky. A lot of twisty valley roads on beautiful days. Unfortunately, if you get behind a slow driving car or a truck you're screwed, very hard to pass. You could kill some people, crusing along at 45-50 in a 55 mile zone with a tail of 6-7 cars right behind them... Pull over, dadgummit! Oh well. The car handles wonderfully in this environment especially in places in Kentucky where the road is washing out: you really want to know where your wheels are. But again, the same twisties that make it hard to pass are wonderful when you get 10-20 minutes of clear road ahead. My 4 cyl was fine for these roads and hills, the 6 would have been useful for the short opportunities to pass.
