Can anybody explain why the comp mpg wouldn't be exact?

My thinking is the comp knows exactly, to the tinniest drop, how much gas is being used, and exactly how far you’ve driven…if so, why would this be inaccurate?
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Even if the computer "knows" exactly how much fuel is being used you will still have intrinsic error in the distance travelled. Odometers are not perfect either! In reality, the sensors do not measure the fuel consumed with perfect accuracy.

I thought that with modern computers running the fuel injections…and everything being high tech…that it knew exactly the amount being injected.

Guess I could be mistaken…I just assumed.

Odometer is what is used by the comp and for manual calculations, so either way it would be “off” by the same. Now that I think about it most cars speedometer is set slightly lower than actual; meaning if a cop is “clocking” you, your speedometer may read 65 but you may actually be going 62.

I guess in reality keeping track of mileage is only good for noticing if you’re developing some type of engine (or other) problem. Too many variables, even from one day to the next…to be “really” accurate, especially if you want to compare to others.
  • lev_berkovichlev_berkovich Member Posts: 858
And the most important variable is your driving style. I remember reading the excerpts from the book by Paul Getty many years ago on a subject. Maybe some "old book worm" can remember the title.
I've mentioned it many times already - I am getting 1.5 - 2 MPG more on any car than my wife. I am listening to the engine more.

However, she gets 16.7 - 17 MPG on our 2.5T AWD using premium (91) under very unfavorable driving conditions - short city "hops" between her students and heavy LA freeway traffic. Just @ EPA figure.

My V 70 is right dead on. Got a ticket for 70 in a 55. Cruise control was on. Cop said 70. I didn't disagree. Ended up getting off. He forgot to sign it or put a bail amount down. LOL Must have been ready for change of shift. It was 430 am.

    heh... :P

My previous 03 Accord was clocked by those road side displays (ones with out cops in them) my speedometer said 40, but the road side display showed 32...maybe it was the slower speed.

have 2500 miles on my v8 so far, and has been a joy to drive. my wife is loving hers as well. engine and transmission are fantastic - plenty of power, very smooth, and the tiptronic is a nice option to have with the six speed. handling, convenience, fit and finish are everything that we expected. recently did some fuel economy math and got 19mpg on a mainly highway trip (averaging 80 or so) and 16.5mpg on daily commute, which is a mix of some highway and stop-and-go city traffic. we drove the LR3 as well, and the xc90 v8 is just a lot more fun. plus, there's actually a crumple zone behind the third row seat, unlike the LR3. only thing i'm waiting on is a hard-wired connection from the stereo for my ipod - unclear if this is going to happen any time soon. in the meantime, the monster fm transmitter i bought is doing an adequate job. we're probably going to consider snow tires for next winter. the car did fine in the 2 storms we've driven in, but not as sticky as our xc70 with the snow tires on.

We live at 7500 ft. in northern New Mex.
Question....would the T5 or V8 perform any better or worse at this altitude? What about mud/snow/ and rough dirt rutted roads? MPG at high altitude? I'm used to a 4 wheel drive truck that I can engage according to conditions. We are trying to decide between the T5 and V8 and wondering if there are any opinions out there about these subjects re. mtn./tough road driving? Thks for any words to help us make a decision.

I also posted in the "prices paid" but figured I'd find more "owners" here.

I was quoted a lease on the XC90 T5 - with premium, metallic, rear-park, climate and versatility: first month down, $506.12/month, 4 years, 48k. I was shooting for a little lower after chatting in the "lease questions" forum, but wondered if (in the real world) these numbers look good/bad to others. My figures may have been skewed by mixing lease vspurchase incentives.

Any feedback would be appreciated. I think the dealer incentive

    Thanks in advance!

Any comments or concerns about buying an XC90-V8 in the USA and then importing it to Canada?
Has anybody tried it? The V8 won't be available up here until August, and the quoted prices seem to be much steeper than in the States.
What about the impact of customs duty and GST (federal taxes). As a permanent resident of Canada, would I have to pay sales tax for the state that I purchase the Volvo in?
I think I can live with the MPH gauge versus Kms per hour. Thanks for any input.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
My big concern would be getting warranty service. Lots of folks purchased Nissans in Canada and brought them to the States a few years ago, but then Nissan USA stopped honouring the warranty, so the practice dried up. I've heard that Honda USA/Canada is the same way; no clue about Volvo, but it's something to look into.

I suspect the duty will hammer you pretty good too. You could buy a car in Oregon (and a few other states) and avoid sales taxes down here, but you'll most likely get hit with your GST and other fees when you import and/or register it in your home province/territory.

The Importing Car into Canada from US discussion isn't very active but you may want to ask in there too.

Thanks. The warranty coverage issue hadn't been thought of....and/or the possible downgraded resale value in Canada. But, the potential lack of warranty is enough to kill that desire to hunt for a cheaper deal in the USA. We'll sit and wait to see the V8 here in Calgary in August.

I read in "reviews" that the T6 Engine is not suited for the XC90, but have not discovered why. Can someone explain to me? Also, Volvo Technician told me not to get the T6 or the V8..said 2.5 was the perfect engine for this auto. Any ideas? Thxs
  • mark50mark50 Member Posts: 5
I just got a 2.5T XC90 and I love it. We have approximately 2000 miles on it now. Traded in a big V8 Chevy Tahoe and I was a little nervous. The 2.5T has really surprised me. I haven't pulled my camping trailer yet, but have loaded it down with landscaping bricks and it didn't even phase it. My dealer said that the T6 is being discontinued. The V8 is new but reports I have read are good. The 2.5T is the engine Volvo had used for many many years. It's tried and proven. Can't go wrong in my opinion
  • bigeddybigeddy Member Posts: 181
The T6 is too long to fit the engine compartment comfortably (transverse mounting) which is why it was mated to a smaller, less desirable 4-speed transmission with torque limiting. Otherwise it is a good, durable engine like the 2.5T. The V8 is new so we don't know how it will hold up. The 2.5T is a nice match for the XC90 if you don't push it too hard; mileage plummets above around 65 mph or with rabbit starts.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
I'm a speed freak so the V8 is my fave.

The T6 is a good engine, but it does have limitations that some people don't like.

The 2.5T is the slowest and most fuel efficient.

It may soon be a moot question as the twin-turbo 2.9-liter inline-six will be discontinued in 2006 per the first paragraph in this story:

The quoted article IS NOT factually accurate. For instance, the base S80 was "re-packaged" with the standard leather seats and other smaller amendments, and actually is LESS expensive than the base 2005 + comparable options.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
lol, it's on the internet, it must be true. Where's your link?

Seriously, feel free to send in a note on the Contact us form and maybe a different article will come down the pike. Thanks!

I stopped by Volvo in Melbourne, Fl tonight to look at the pearl white on an S80. Very nice color, much better than the plain white.
While there I noticed they had 8 XC90 V8's. Are the V8's not selling well or did they just get a large shipment? They were closed so there was no one to ask, like I would get a straight answer anyway.

The biggest change is that there will be no more free scheduled maintenance on 2006 models. This seems to be in line with what MB, BMW, etc. are offering.

For overseas deliveries, 2006 model of XC90 is availabe in August.

I am looking for a used XC90 here in Canada, most likely a 2004. Most of the XC90's available in Ontario are around the same price $48,000 - $51,000 (all from Volvo dealers).

It's been a long time since I have bought a used car, and I'm wondering how much room the dealers generally have when negotiating the price of their used Volvo's?
  • xc90xtcxc90xtc Member Posts: 10
Over here in Calgary, I keep hearing whispered rumours that the dealer tries to purchase most used Volvos and trade-ins (they are very seldom listed in the auto-finders or newspaper want ads), thus controlling the market and inflating prices.
However, this area seems to be more Ford and GMC oriented, so used Volvos are rare anyway.
Certainly, the only used XC90's are at the dealers right now (lease returns, mostly). And, Volvo's don't depreciate very quickly...which is what we want if we hang on to them.
One of the reasons that we've put a deposit on a new one is that even the used ones are still so pricey.

We have put the first 900 miles on our XC90 V8. On our longest trip was going from Sacramento, thru Clear Lake and then up to the North Coast on Hwy 101 to near Crecent City, we averaged 20.4 mpg. That is driving thru the mountains, passing other vehicles (motorhomes and trucks with trailers). The speeds ranged from 70 on the Hwy, and between 35 and 50 thru the various towns, up and down hills and mountains. The vehicle handled like a dream....took turns in the mountains extremely well and never felt like it couldn't handle everthing we threw at it. We even took it off paved road, on a dirty, dusty dirt road, that leads to the coast, and even crossed 3 small streams (6-8' wide and no more than about 8" of water running thru them). All I can say is that the entire trip was impressive. This is a great vehicle. Our's is in the Ruby Red Metalic...fully loaded with the Navigation System. The NAV system works great too, it knew where we were at all times and took us to our destination without any problems. Will be taking it in to switch the oil to Synthetic, next week sometime, just because I feel synthetic protects the engine better...(had an '85 760 turbo that had 500,000 miles and never had the engine worked on, used synthetic after about the first 1,000 miles). So far this vehicle is awesome!!!!! I'll keep you posted as we take more trips!

Well we bought the XC90 today!

Dealer was asking $49,000. It's the 2.5T with convenience, and premium packages, running boards, and trailer hitch (04 model, but on the road june/03). Managed to get it for $47,000 with a 7yr, 160,000km warranty included.

Very happy about it and can't wait to get it home and show it off!
  • xc90xtcxc90xtc Member Posts: 10
Sounds like a good deal. Congrats and happy motoring. As an aside, for others reading between the lines, remember to mention your pricing is in Canadian dollars, eh?
The extra warranty seems like a nice bonus, how many kms on it so far towards the 160K?

I'm planning to purchase an XC90 with the 2.5T engine. Since we don't get much snow or ice in our part of the USA, I think the FWD model would be fine. FWD is pretty good in light snow anyway, and it would save $1700 or so. To my surprise, according to the sales brochure, the vehicle weight is the same for FWD and AWD models. How can this be? I thought AWD or 4 wheel drive always added 200-300 pounds. My thinking was that the 2.5T would perform better and get better gas mileage with FWD. Am I wrong about the AWD having a weight penalty? If so, maybe the AWD would be the way to go afterall.
  • guyfguyf Member Posts: 456
There has to be a weight penalty with the AWD. If you don't have much snow and don't expect to go much off-road, you are better off with the FWD. It will be and will feel lighter.
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
There is a small weight difference, but its around 100 lbs.
The FWD version is 1 mpg better.

We sell quite a few FWD's here in AZ.
  • calhoncalhon Member Posts: 87
The weight of the AWD unit is about 140 lbs, which is true for all Volvos. That and the increased drivetrain losses would probably result in 1 or 2 less mpg.

I went to Volvo in Melbourne, FL last night to discuss OSD on a V8 XC90. I figured since they had 6-8 on the lot they would push hard to sell me one of them. I was mistaken, they did not even try and the sales lady said she had handled many OSD sales and most people were very happy with the program. I want to pick mine up in late Sept/early Oct. so she said I should order it in mid-July. I drove a V8 again and I liked the way it drove very much. So in a couple of weeks will be decision time and also decision time shortly after that on what shipping location to drop it off. And then some planning on where to go in Europe. She did say other than the options listed on the price list all other options were purchased either at the Volvo pickup site in Sweden or from the local store. I want mud guards, cargo mat and a price on the front parking warning system. I think at pickup I can get a cargo mat (no installation time), mud guards (I hope) but I assume the parking system would take some time to wire and install. Any others buy accessaries from for their Volvo?

I read somewhere that for the 06 MY Volvo had discontinued free maintenance for the first 30K miles.
    True or not?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    True,

free scheduled maintenance is not being offered on 06 cars.
    Still available on 05's.
  • wmquanwmquan Member Posts: 1,817
When free maintenance was added, there was a significant price hike. I can't imagine there will be a price decrease when the free maintenance is dropped?

I was planning on getting the IAQS on my XC90 but the dealer said most of their cars don't have them. I don't have anything but a regular filter on my present Lexus and do not trouble with pollen, etc. Anyone have or a IAQS and have opinions on whether it is a worthwhile option or not?
    Thanks

I just ordered a 2006 XC90 V8 with everything except navigation. I paid $500 over invoice for a 2006 and almost did the overseas delivery. There was very little difference in the price. I tried to buy a 2005 V8 from a dealer in Kansas City (I live in The Woodlands, TX), but could not get the dealer to negotiate below $500 over invoice, so I bought locally for 500 over on a 2006. Good Luck!

i've got a loaded v8 which has the iaqs in it. i've driven by a couple dead skunks by the side of the road and have barely noticed the smell - seems like the iaqs does a great job.

If I want to pickup my vehicle in late September/early October time frame when should I order it? I looked thru previous posts and did not find a answer to this question although I thought it was there somewhere. My dealer says mid-July. Correct?.
    Thanks
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
    Mid July is the latest.
    I'd place the order sooner.
  • gambiamangambiaman Member Posts: 131
Mis-communication with wife. Anyone else have these!
My wife now informs me that she can't miss work the first 2 weeks in Oct. so it appears I don't have time to order and pick up mid-September so we can be back by Oct. 3. So I guess I now need to figure out when to order so we don't have to pick it up any earlier than Oct. 15. We are planning a 2 week trip whenever we pick it up. I was hoping to have it back before Xmas but with a drop off no earlier than October 27 that is getting iffy. So the question is when do I order it to ensure pickup no earlier than Oct. 15? Say they tell me it will be ready for pickup earlier, how much leeway do I have to delay pickup?
    Thank for any suggestions/help
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
Why don't you just order it and stipulate to the dealer that you will accept delivery on such and such a date? If it arrives too early or too late then it's the dealer's problem and not yours.

    tidester, host
  • gambiamangambiaman Member Posts: 131
I talked to the dealer today and told them the same thing. She is checking with her Volvo contacts on Tuesday to verify it is OK with them. I told her pickup no later than September 19 or I will have to wait until no earlier than Oct 17. She wanted me to come in Tuesday and order it but I want her to make sure if it comes in at the wrong time they don't insist I have to pick it up until I can travel.
  • gambiamangambiaman Member Posts: 131
I know a lot of folks have rear park assist. Does anyone have front park assist and if so I would appreciate their opinions on whether it is a worthwhile option or not.
Also does anyone have mud guards, opinions, and did anyone install them themselves.
    Thanks

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket disc for the 2005 XC90 NAV system that has more detail than the one that came with the system?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
No dealer would agree to that, since shipping is beyond their control.

Actually, its a moot point. All Overseas cars are paid for prior to pickup in Europe.
The deal would be done long before the car makes it to America.

A drop off end of October would be hard pressed to be at the dealer before Xmas.
Only if its an East coast dealer is it really possible.

Just picked up a 2004 XC90. Loving it so far! Just wondering what level of fuel everyone is putting into their XC90's? I have been putting 89 in my tank. Has anyone seen success with 87?
  • volvomaxvolvomax Member Posts: 5,238
If by success do you mean will it run?
Yes it will on 87, just not as efficently as on 89 or 91 or 93 octane.

Also, it depends on your driving habits, if you drive slowly and don't accelerate hard lower octane is ok.
If you drive quickly and are a fast accelerater your better off w/ high octane gas.
  • dano1193dano1193 Member Posts: 5
I recently purchased a 04 XC90 T6. Loving it so far. Anyhow, I have noticed that the doors do not automatically lock when the car is in motion. All of my previous cars have had this option. Does anyone have any insight on this? Volvo is famous for safety so it surprised me a bit that the doors don't lock automatically.
