"We will both accelerate to 60mph (Of course the Chev HD(?) will take a little longer to get there). 140ft from a 300ft cliff we will both slam on our brakes."
Accelerate towards a cliff? Are you sure your Tundra isn't leaking exhaust fumes into it's cab while you're driving?
DCH..........that's the most sound solution that anyone has come up with. looks like Bamatundra has conceded to victory though (changing subject as usual).........so you sir are the clear victor here......congrats.
Man - we got the whole Chev pack here! Hillyhoundog, DeadSilverado(aka Seepig), and Acccckkkk!
Let's talk about common ground. I think that we are all in agreement that the Tundra empty and loaded with 1000lb outaccelerates and out brakes the 1500HD (and therefore all Chev 3/4tons with the wimpy 6L whortech engine). This makes it more capable of hauling 1000lb.
If Chev didn't cheap out and put Chevette brakes on their so-called "HD" trucks, then Chev would have their usual mediocre truck with Yugo quality and reliability. Since the HD brakes are maxxed out with just 1000lb in the bed, it is really meaningless to talk about what the truck could do if it had brakes.
It is like talking about how great your swimming pool would be if it had some water in it. Braking is a core capability of ANY truck. With no brakes, you have no truck. Following this logic, the 1500HD is really not a truck, but a minivan - capable of some light duty work.
I agree that it is a ludicrous situation to accelerate a truck towards a cliff and then slam on the brakes, but in this case the Tundra driver would live while the Chev driver would be in a body bag. Hitching the two trucks together is also ludicrous since no one would do this in real-life.
In an emergency stop situation (which IS real-world) the Chev driver would be in the same body bag as my hypothetical test.
I am not claiming that the Tundra is a 3/4 ton truck. I am sure that Dodge and Ford 3/4 tons are capable of hauling and towing much heavier loads. I am just saying (with facts to back it up) that the Tundra is more capable than Chevs 1500HD runt.
Don't forget as you rant on that an empty 1500HD weighs 1200lbs more than an empty 2/5 Ton-dra. Edmunds has this info posted. That weight difference PLUS the 1000lbs load you mention is WAY over the Tundra's cargo rating. We won't even talk about tow ratings!
Now which truck did you say is more capable?? That is if you use it like a truck is meant to be used....
Seriously Bama...get that exhaust system looked at.
I have never seen any American so vociferously defend a foreign company that sends most of its profits to Japan...save for the 700 million dollars Jesse Jackson shook it down for.
So what? Ford outsources their productions of engines, and smaller parts to all over the world. "Oh no! Ford is taking food out of hard working Americans mouths!" Grow up. There are many companies out there that influence our daily lives that are foreign-based. Even ones you think are local.
I remember, back in the day (mid 80s), a friend of mine parked his Dad's FWD Cadillac in my driveway right in front of my '75 Pontiac Lemans GT (350CI). Well, we got into a pissing contest and he wouldn't move the Caddy so I hopped in my trusted Pontiac (this was when GM still made a decent car) and tried to show him who was boss. Well, that caddy wouldn't budge. I tore 2 holes in my parent’s driveway and made a bunch of smoke trying to budge that Caddy but it wouldn't move. Didn't prove a damned thing except that I'm stubborn and find it hard to admit when I'm wrong (although I'm getting better at the latter).
Has anyone seen the 03 Silverado? It has the same from end as the Avalanche which I think is the 2nd Ugliest vehicle behind the Aztec. Also the new Colorado(old s-10) looks like an extended cab Avalanche. And I hope Nissan does not make that new pickup. Whats happening to trucks looks. I hope in the future trucks still look like trucks.
I have to agree with you, the '03 Shakerados are even uglier than the '02s - if that is possible. They gave the new Shakerados squinty eyes just like their ugly duckling - the Mexalanche. What did they have in mind?
What the h@ll is Toyota thinking??? Look at those rubberband tires. This disaster on wheels could actually be more practically useless as a truck than the regular Tundra, if that's possible!!
Anyway, it's nice to see you've abandoned the towing topics for a thread you actually have firsthand experience in...ownership of an ugly pickup!!
I'm not crazy about the new Silverado front ends, but it sure beats that cutesey "Love Bug" look that Toyota came up with for the 2/5 Ton-dra's front end!!
Hey, we can talk ugly trucks at the Town Hall Chat too!
Just a reminder that the Town Hall chat is on tonight (5-7pm Pacific/8-10 pm Eastern). Hope you can join in this week to meet and greet with your fellow Town Hall users and have a little fun with The Return of Car Trivia!
in fact, imho, the wide, low-slung trophy/stadium/ prerunner trucks (especially the f150s) look the best.
so, to me ugly is: - aztek - escalade - kia - land rover - silverado/sierra heavy duty - anything with too much lift
mediocre/somewhat-ok looking: - silverado (old and new) light duty - tundra - old ram .. however for me, the mediocre ones when done up in race fashion with contoured, widened, and raised and 'glass w/ minimum or no lift looks fantastic.
looks pretty good: - dakota - tacoma - ranger - f150 - f-series super duty - new ram
Still glad about my 2002 GMC 2500HD ext cab 4x4 SLE Duramax/Allison/Eaton purchase.
Have 11,000 miles now since Oct. and am averaging 18 MPG, just got 15 MPG on a tank that consisted of half of it towing 13,000 lbs at 30 miles per hour. Power excellent for towing, BRAKES are also EXCELLENT loaded and unloaded. Have hauled as much as 3500 lbs in the bed and hauled that great. my truck with me and my tools in it weighs in at 4100 front and 2900 rear. Hauled about 24,000 lbs the other day and no problem stopping the load from 40 mph in the country without trailer brakes, and she would even stop herself with the grade braking.
With the torque management in 1st gear, she will not break them loose without building up boost, but that isn't why I bought it. I bought it for a REAL WORK TRUCK ON THE FARM, and for comfortable and economical highway transportation. I think that it would beat my 2000 5.3L in the quarter mile, but wouldn't in 0-60 because of the slower launch in 1st gear.
By the way, did an emergency braking test in the pouring down rain a while ago, and it was scarry, stoped strait as an arrow, no ABS malfunctions, and if I hadn't been wearing my seatbelt would have thrown me thru the windshield LOL. The brakes are GREAT. Would buy the truck again in a heartbeat, and reccomend to anyone after 11,000 trouble free hard use miles.
Still lovin' mine too! 18,000 miles, not a single problem or trip to the dealer, except for oil changes. This is the TRUCK! Silverado, 2500HD 4x4 Duramax ZF 6-spd
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, have had No updates, or any repairs or problems at all. And the installation of the 255x85R16 tires puts me at 2000 RPMs at 55 MPH in 4th gear. I turn about 2000 RPMs at 75 MPH in 5th on the interstate. It is geared even better for farm towing with the taller tires. And she runs a faster quarter mile because the shift patterns are hit better for speed runs.
Love the truck, most everyone I know that has one does too. The neighbors with the Fords are lookin at me drive by real close. From the number of people who drool over my truck you would think it was a Corvette, there isn't three days go by of me driving it without people asking how I like it, how my milage is and if I would buy it again? HECK YEAH!!!
I don't know, I know quite a few people with Duramax trucks, and I would say 90% have been trouble free, and only maybee 5% have had significant problems such as a tranny failure. The Duramax itself has had a wonderful track record so far. So I guess being in the 95% is not NORMAL?
"I know quite a few people with Duramax trucks, and I would say 90% have been trouble free."
This is a pretty bold statement - how many Duramax owners do you know? When I look at www.thedieselpage.com - it looks like a bloodbath. Diesels leaking fuel and finding it out by it steaming off of their manifolds, injection pumps fragmenting, knocking engines, allison transmission failures, etc. Just the typical Chev problems.
I am glad that you and Quad lucked up. Quad needed a good truck after the lemon Chev he traded. It just shows that Chev is capable of building good trucks, just very infrequently.
Of those 33 posts only 4 of us had problems. Most were people asking ? or offering advice .3 of those posts were BAMA saying "I told you so".I find it interesting that 10% of the posts come from a Tundra owner who has demonstrated repeatedly that he has no comprehension of the full sized market, towing ,hualing ,diesel...
I pretty much have to agree with ya there. Except, which year Frontiers are we talking here lol. Cause a few years back when they went to that double cab short bed looking thing, thing was just plain ugly lookin. Otherwise I'd have to agree with the rest.
the Frontier is particularly attractive. And I think the older "Splash" was a sharp little truck. Chev trucks have ALWAYS looked good. Just some better than others. IMO.
I don't like the looks of the Avalanche.. but somehow, the Escalade version of it looks worse-- like something out of Mad Max.
And while I like the F150 super crew, the Lincoln version just looks wrong..
And the frontier.... I think it should've either went with the looks of its sister suv, pathfinder --for clean looks, or have it's flares and other parts be integrated into the body (and remove the fake bolts, or have them be real).. which would then make it look good, because as it is.. it's almost "avalanchy"..

kip
2nd Ugliest truck = Ford SD which looks like Dodge Ram.
Best looking truck = 1988-1998 Chevy
Ugly trucks:
Explorer Sport Track
Pontiac Aztek
Buick Rezenvous
Ranger Splash flare side (from a few years ago)
Chevy S10 Extreme - when they're lowered and look ghetto
Chevy Avalanche - nice idea, too much cheap looking plastic on the body.
Chevy trucks from the late 80's - Present - boxy body looks really outdated
Chevy S10 Crew Cab - really bad design as a Crew Cab, looks like they just slapped a couple of doors on the back.
somehow, the Escalade version of it looks worse--
