    Hahaha... that's classic.

Nah...... I have a better one.

I know some people out there will think I’m making this up but I’m not, honest. It’s so unbelievable it has to be true.

When my wife and I were engaged after returning from a pizza shop (at about 10:30 PM) to a parking spot on a city street, we were sitting in my car for about ten minutes discussing our upcoming wedding when all of a sudden the car just rocked.

I got out of my car but the lady who backed into me trying to get out of her parking spot in front of me (I left about half a car length as evidenced by how hard she hit me) but she refused to get out of her car to survey what had just happened. I finally convinced her she should do this and when she got out of her car, she looked across the street and said, “ why did you park over here when there are all those parking spots over there”?, as she pointed to the other side of the street :confuse: . Needless to say, I was speechless.

To this day, Mrs. jmonroe says she is the only person that has ever been able to do this to me.

FWIW, all I needed was a bumper. That was back in the days when bumpers were bumpers.

I saw a Honda Civic Pickup truck this morning. Of course it was a handmade pickup truck. the roof was cut of just behind the B pillar and the back was plywood duck taped in place.

The kid must have been a fan of this guy.

    >And the mother asked me the same thing?! The mother made a comment about how I probably stopped too short when I should have kept going, but she understands that since they did the hitting, it's their fault.

As I've always said the nut never falls far from the tree. The mother used the same tact. Priceless.

I'd love to see them on Judge Judy suing you for the damage to their car. (Not that I want you sued; I just want to see the reaction from JJ.) Judge Judy would end up lambasting the mother for her attitude. Judge Judy seems to be on a rant kick lately--maybe they told her that increases ratings to demean some person continually. It's like the Divorce Court Maybelline who's gone now; she did the same thing to men.

These last few have supplied my laughs for the day.

Today was a 3/4 inch snow this morning. Drivers were like they'd never seen snow before or they were bold and brave. Actually the ground was relatively warm in spots and the snow packed and melted under wheels to make slick stop sign intersections.

Pileups on the interstates. Five trucks and two cars on I70 near Springfield because a trucker couldn't stop for the backup from the truck accident up the highway! Duh.

Those parking problems would go away With this car. My most memorable Red Green cars are the Zamboni made out of a K-car, and a Hummer made out of 2 Hyundais duct-taped side by side.

Only mild winners this evening...Lexus ES that had no lights on at almost 5pm...well, it had DRLs on, but no rear lights. Nice. It eas a LLCer too. And then I got behind a bloated old Escalade that wouldn't get more than about 10 car lengths behind the car in front of it, even though it was just a 30mph zone. So people would cut in front incessantly, and the guy would get slower. Luckily I was only behind that dope for maybe 1/2 a mile, so I didn't get too frustrated. I also got behind a new GTI that wouldn't get above 30, in a 35, in the left lane, with traffic passing on the right. What am I missing?

But at least we don't have snow!

Where do you get this show? I haven't seen anything like it on our cable--MythBusters is as close as we get here in the Midwest.

Cause I wanted to see how the front bumper on a 66' Bonneville would hold up to a lady, traveling in reverse at what had to be 10 to 15 MPH, trying to get out of a parking space that most people could have parked a dump truck.

Thanks for asking, you're only the second person to ask that question. You already know who the first was. :)

What kind of car was she driving? I'm a big Pontiac fan (had a '69 Bonneville and I now have a '67 Catalina convertible and a '76 LeMans), so I'm hoping that whatever she was driving, she got the worst of it! :P

I know sometimes though, the Pontiac models with a beak on the front can get damaged easily, because all the force gets centered on the beak. The '66 didn't have too much of a beak, but IIRC the front-end was still kind of vee-shaped. The previous owner of my '69 Bonneville had rear-ended someone with it, and it pushed the beak in, while pushing the outer edges of the bumper/grille (it was all one piece by that time) outward.

Coming back from Anchorage last night we were cruising along at about 70 mph, roads are fairly good, maybe a little slick. We came upon this car which was incredibly hard to see, we saw his headlights, but he had no taillights. Dark colored, no taillights, doing less than 30 mph, is he begging to get hit?? He pulled over to the side (sort of) and we went around.

Had one person on the way back be very CONSIDERATE!! Came up on them, they were doing approx 50-55 mph, they immediatly slowed and moved into a pull off so we could pass without slowing down. After we went by they came back onto the road. Surprised the heck out of me since usually people like to make you stay behind them for as long as possible.

I can’t remember what model she was driving but I think it was a Chrysler product and yes she definitely got the worse of it. Like I said it was dark (about 10:30 PM) and from what I could see she was going to need a bumper, trunk, and at least one rear light assembly. Fortunately for me her car sat a little lower than mine so when she hit me her car went under my bumper. Had she not hit me with the force she did, her car would probably not have gone under mine and she also would have gotten away with only needing a bumper.

I didn’t mention this in my original post but this occurrence is definitely worthy of being on this “Inconsiderate Drivers” forum. Wait till you hear “the rest of the story”!!

Like I said, it took some doing just to get her out of her car to see what damage had been done. Then after her “why did you park over here” comment she says, “I don’t think your bumper looks so bad, my car looks a lot worse than yours so I don’t I have to show you my drivers license and registration” and she turns around and walks back to her car. I told her she did have to show me this information but she refused, again saying that she had the most damage and drove off but not before I got her license number.

My fiancé says, “now what do you do”, I said, “I’m going to walk you back to your apartment then I’m going to the police station”. When I told the police officer what had happened I then asked, “is this considered a hit-and-run situation” and he said, “you bet your xxx it is, let me have the plate number and we’ll take it from here and you’ll be hearing from us tomorrow”. So, I drive home with a big smile on my face.

The next day I get a call from her insurance guy and he says her husband couldn’t believe what she did and he was going to have a talk with her to try and explain the seriousness of what she had done and told me not to worry, just get an estimate and have the shop call him. Three days later I had a check for the bumper replacement with the standard clause “by accepting this payment I agree to accept this as payment in full and will not prosecute …..”.

The interesting thing here is that the check was for $35 more than the estimate and it was made out to me only not me and the dealer who provided the estimate. No, I didn’t return the $35. I used it to buy a couple lamps we were going to need for our first living headquarters. Back then you could buy a couple decent lamps for $35.

I guess they really wanted to settle this fast before I got any wise ideas.

I used to watch this show every Saturday evening a couple years back on AlaskaOne (public television station here run by UA Fairbanks) at a friend's house. Looking at this week's schedule, it does not look like they have it in their line up any longer. There is a ton of Red Green on Amazon, but surprisingly high prices....

Anyhow, driver without tail lights on the way home last night at nearly midnight. This fella was driving an old Geo Storm-looking rig, so my guess is that the tail was just not working on it versus having DRLs. The headlights were exceedinly dim as well.

Where did you see him? The car we encountered was an older Geo Storm looking thing too with dim headlights. Was it red? If so, its probably the same car. We saw him headed north close to Healy at about 9 pm last night. Too funny if there's 2 of them out there like that, lol. I know the one I saw didn't have its front park lamps working either, probably a wiring problem or a blown fuse, see a lot of older Ford trucks with this issue too.

That is hilarious. Sounds like it must be the same vehicle - same color (dark red/maroon maybe?), no lamps other than headlights, somewhat ratty looking, poking along at 45 on the Johansen Expy in Fairbanks (in the left lane). Let's see, Healy at 9, Fairbanks at 12.... possible. That trip usually takes about two hours at the speed limit. Ugh.

Yup, that's the car, has to be. The color is right, it was ratty looking, driving very slow, no lights other than headlights. I can't imagine there would be TWO of them on the same night!!! We came up on him he was doing ~35-40 mph, hubby was doing 70, about ran him over, didn't see him until he was right on top of the car, quick swerve to the left and the guy moved to the right. I'm surprised he made it all the way to Fairbanks without getting pulled over or run over!

I am, too. I was lucky and came upon him on a lighted road. Though, I guess with the driving lights I would have seen him from a fair distance assuming he had any reflectors working properly. *shrugs* Crazy what some people are willing to drive. Though, I guess I should not say too much considering that I still drive my van on occasion! At least all the lights work on it. :P

While listening to the radio tonight, I just learned there is a town of about 1500 in Alaska named North Pole. Do either of you know where it is and have you ever been there?

As I heard them say, the light posts are shaped like candy canes complete with the red, white and green stripes. Sounds like a very unique place.

This is also the town where all the kids letters addressed to Santa go. They use volunteers to open the more than 100K letters that they get. They said there are never enough volunteers for this work. Sooo, if you guys have some spare time, why don't you just mosey on over and help out.

You'll get to meet each other and who knows you might even come across some vehicles with lighting problems during the trip. Heck, you might even meet some of their owners there. :)

    Just a thought,

Yes there is a town in Alaska called North Pole and if memory serves its south east of Fairbanks (maybe 10-15 miles) on the Richardson Highway (or what would be the Alaskan highway going into Fairbanks). I have never been there but I would suspect that either one of akangl or xwesx could very well have been there.

Its about 100 miles north of me, much closer to xwesx I'm sure. I've been there many times. The lady who bought my horse trailer back in March lives there, a friend of mine lives there, we almost bought a house there. If you ever come to Alaska the Santa Clause House in North Pole is a must see. Its awesome! Parts of North Pole are great, other parts not so, a friend of hubby's lives there, but the section he's in he calls crack alley.

Hi. New to CarSpace and have enjoyed following some threads. I was wondering if anyone else has had negative experiences sharing the road with commuter bus drivers. In Boston, MA I have had a number of near-death experiences in which a bus either pulls out into traffic without checking to make sure the coast was clear or a bus switches lanes without looking (often squishing into a space it barely fits into by inches). It's as if the drivers know that they're driving one of the biggest vehicles on the road and can do whatever they want and we all have to bow to them or get squashed.

Is this a Boston thing or a city bus driver thing? I wouldn't do some of the things they try in my little Accord, much less a giant bus.

SLOW drivers in the Seattle metro area today. Merging at 41 mph, sitting in the left lane at 55 (in a 60), wandering in and out of carpool lanes. I was a passenger for the day, luckily. We also had an Alabama-plated Civic slow to about 40 in the right lane, so we passed it and got back (we were going to be exiting in a mile or two). Then it shot past us going maybe 70, then got in the offramp and slowed to a crawl.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
SLOW drivers due to the heavy rain. Speed Limit is set for optimum driving conditions so 55 in a 60 during those heavy, pelting rain storms were good decisions. Now, if only there was a switch that turned on headlights when the wipers were turned on.....
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,593
Heavy rain? You're from the northwest too, right? Today's conditions were not remarkable, just another drizzly day. And even if a slower speed is prudent (not like today's), doing it in the left lane while almost every other vehicle in every lane is going faster, and forcing people to pass on the right is pretty selfish. Speed differentials are more dangerous than speed alone.

I agree on the lights though...but I always turn mine on when I drive, even in nice weather.
  • jmonroejmonroe Member Posts: 8,989
Now, if only there was a switch that turned on headlights when the wipers were turned on.....

Actually there is. Back in the mid 90’s, I lived in South Carolina and it was the LAW that whenever you turned your wipers on you also had to turn on your head lights (parking lights would not satisfy the law). It was popularly referred to as “wipers on, lights on” and when I moved there, friends who had already moved there (transferred by the company) told me this was no joke, “If you want to see if it’s enforced, then drive without your head lights on but be prepared for it to cost you” (at the time, I think they said about $135). Since I always turned my head lights on when I turned on my wipers, this was no problem for me.

As a result of this requirement, I was told, most of the domestics had a factory supplied option that would automatically turn on the head lights when you turned on your wipers, for the states that had this law. I also heard that you could go to any auto parts store and buy a kit to achieve this, about $40 at the time.

To be perfectly honest, I feel this should be a LAW in all states since way to many drivers don’t understand how dangerous it is to do otherwise.

the section he's in he calls crack alley.

Ugh. North Pole... about a 15 mile drive from my house. I do my best to avoid the place, but the Santa Claus House is certainly a tourist draw. Needless to say, I have never been there (after 11+ years of residency in the area) and hope to continue that. I am not much for holiday consumerism, and no place epitomizes that more than SCH. I think it is a blight upon the landscape, but I digress. While in college, we (Resident Assistants) used to hold community service programs for our residents wherein we would recieve 100 letters each from SCH and answer them for the senders. Cruel and deceptive for sure - truly an enjoyable experience. :P

Honestly, though, who has time?! I was butchering rabbits from 1530 to 2130 last night, then had two back-to-back broomball games and made it to bed at 0130. It was a long day. Thankfully, it was unseasonably warm last night at about 5-10 degrees so being outside for nearly two hours dressing out the beasts with only latex gloves cladding my wet hands was not too bad. The wind though.... darn the wind.

The roads are wonderfully slick here due to the warm weather (it was up near freezing for 2-3 days prior to Sunday!), so I have been enjoying it tremendously. No crazies to report, though.... other than me. :D

I always turn my lights on as well. I never did when living in Oregon, but in Alaska there are much longer periods of "dusky" driving during all times of the year and I find it safer to not leave it to chance. Since I have habituated to it, I never drive a vehicle unless its lights are on (regardless of locality).

Typically, though, I do not use wipers when it is raining unless I have neglected my Rain-X application. Rain-X provides a consistently clear windscreen while wipers provide periodic good visibility. *shrugs*

Western Oregon and Washington is not the same "Northwest" as Eastern Oregon and Washington. :P

Water on the road is really no different than snow - if a car and/or driver is not properly equipped for it, it is dangerous and can warrant reduced speeds. Now, why it should warrant a lack of driving discipline or courtesy, that is another question altogether!

The daytime runnings lights are on with cars that have them even if the light switch isn't move to "on."

On our newer car the wipers are automatic. I discovered the headlights were "on" on the way back from Nashville and I couldn't turn them off. I went to the dealer. They troubleshot it, but the lights weren't stay on at the time.

They finally realized when the wipers were set to auto, the headlights are "on" just in case the wipers stroke for stray moisture. Turn the wipers to "off" and there's no problem with the headlights being "on" instead of daytime running lights. Service guys said a big Duhhhh when their technician figured it out. I was the first person who paid that much attention to the status of the headlights.

Only thing inconsiderate is that I wish the drls turned on the rear taillights for safety too instead of just the headlights. So I typically use the parking lights when driving in anything below optimum weather.

It depends somewhat on your location. In northern California, where it doesn't rain for six months at a time, the first few rains can result in extremely hazardous conditions. Still not as bad as the snow I've driven in, but very slippery nonetheless.

But back home in upstate NY, where it rains off and on all year, rain never presented a serious traction threat beyond hydroplaning (not a problem when you're going straight), assuming you're not driving like an asylum escapee. There was no need to slow down, other than for sharp curves, or if it was raining so hard you couldn't see.

Although I haven't lived in Seattle, my suspicion is that it's similar, so I'm with fintail on this one...

Interesting ... I had one really good Rain-X application a number of years ago, but later, Jiffy Lube (back when I actually went to Jiffy Lube, which I've quit doing for a number of reasons) gave me a renewed coat, and my windshield was screwed up for a year and a half. No matter how many times I washed the car, cleaned the windshield, or replaced the wiper blades, I had serious streaking problems.

I came away not trusting Rain-X, thinking apparently you have to do it just perfectly or it messes up your windshield. Have you ever had problems like that with it? I liked it the first time around. I'm just afraid to use it ever again.

I live in Pennsylvania and I know someone who used Rain-X and got a ticket for not turning his wipers on when it was raining while driving on a local Interstate. When he tried to explain to the State Police, when he was being written up for not having his wipers on, the cop said sarcastically, “the law is very plain in this state that you have to put your wipers on when it’s raining, maybe Rain-X will pay this ticket for you” !!!

However, I do have a very good use for Rain-X. Years ago after listening to Mrs. jmonroe complain about the soap film always re appearing on the ceramic tiles and shower door, no matter what she did, I thought of putting Rain-X on these surfaces after they were scraped clean with a razor blade. This stuff lasted for months and at the fist sign of water not sheeting off these surfaces I reapply another coating. Boy, was she impressed but it didn’t last nearly as long as the Rain-X. I wouldn’t recommend it for use on plastic tub surrounds.

If anyone out there decides to try this I have to CAUTION you, make sure you provide plenty of ventilation, those vapors in a confined area will affect your breathing. I would hate to see posters disappear because of this tip. I’m sure Rain-X is aware of how it works on these surfaces but they probably don’t want to recommend it because of liability issues.

    BE CAREFUL !!!!

This is totally off-topic, but it's funny enough that I have to share for anybody who hasn't heard of this before...

Apparently if you "write" something in Rain-X on a mirror, you don't see it .... until the mirror fogs up. Or the rest of the mirror fogs up, that is, since Rain-X inhibits fog formation.

So you write "I'm watching you" in Rain-X, maybe with a demonic face to go with it, on somebody's bathroom mirror. Then they take a shower, and when they get out and the mirror has fogged up...

Hahahah.... well, just saying that Jiffy Lube did the work is quite a disclaimer in and of itself. I have never had a problem with Rain-X. Just wash the windshield well, then use a damp terry towel to buff it nice and clean - get any soap glaze and that sort of thing off it. Spray the Rain-X on it (or onto a quality paper towel) and wipe evenly over the entire surface. Let it dry, then buff it. My guess is that perhaps they did not clean the surface properly or they did not apply it evenly across the surface.

At least, I think that is how I last did it.... admittedly I forgot to put any on at all last summer and by the time it crossed my mind in September, it just seemed a little late to bother.

Good idea regarding the Rain-X on the shower! Another excellent way to avoid water-spotting and soap scum on the shower surfaces is to take 30 seconds and wipe it down with a towel after drying off. I have used my shower for 2.5 years now and it looks as clean as the day I installed it without any additional cleaning or chemicals other than scrubbing out the tub portion with Comet every couple of weeks. The real trick is convincing my wife that it really is helpful - I guess because she did not have to spend 3 hours cleaning it at the beginning that she just does not properly appreciate the significance of it. :confuse: She does do it but poorly and not regularly, at that!

Hahhaha! That is one of the most foolish things I have heard! At highway speeds, he could have had the wipers on "intermittent" and it would have been quite difficult for the officer to prove one way or another. Sounds like a waste of taxpayer money to me.

Sounds more like a revenue ticket

It may sound like this but if the law says you must turn your wipers on when it's raining, you'll have to comply or pay the consequences.

Just another way to add more money to the cofers.

I agree that it brings in money but it's primarily a safety issue.

You'll have to admit that if a cop is willing to stand out in the rain to give you a ticket he must feel pretty strongly about this law. He could have easily ignored it and stayed dry.

We have a three way tie for today...The first two are the morons that thought it would be OK to go 50 in a 65 side-by-side on a two lane in each direction highway. The third was the truck in front of me turning left that starts rolling for it's turn and then stops in the oncoming #1 lane. So now I'm in the intersection and the light is yellow. Why did he stop? For the oncoming SUV in the right turn only lane that was clearlycoming to a stop. This was probably the guy in front that thought it would be a good idea to go 50 in the left lane.

Honorable mentions are the cars in the pack of traffic going 50 MPH holding 10 second gaps that dropped 5-10 MPH off of their speed every time the brake lights flickered on the car in front of them.

This is an interesting topic. Something about my car's design makes the wipers useless above about 60 MPH. They skip like crazy and it only makes things worse. I'm thinking I should get a good coat of Rain-X on before it rains again. Hopefully I don't get pulled over by a cop that choses to pass up the tailgaters and speeders for someone that is having no problem seeing out his windshield.

You may find that the coat of Rain-X provides a slicker surface for the wipers to skim across, and the skipping may go away - - Just a thought.

While it was mentioned that how did the cop know the wipers were off as opposed to them just being on intermittent, I would venture to guess that he probably observed over a period of time

It could also have been raining heavily enough so that a reasonable person would not have them on intermittent use but have them fully on.
