While waiting for the bridge to open, a biker decided to not wait in line & weaved towards the front between cars when suddenly an 18 wheeler tractor door opened & successfully knocked the biker off his motorcycle.
When I was waved in to the left lane, traffic stopped short so I had a bit of the rear of the van hanging out in the right lane. The guy behind me just thought I was being inconsiderate so he pulled around on the shoulder.
That's when he saw the merge arrow.
The people turning right had their signal on for a long way so the rest of us knew they weren't trying to jump the queue.
Hilarious. I didn't know AK was even more lowest common denominator than the peons on the road here.
I haven't seen many inconsiderates lately....I changed my evening commute route to avoid a stoplight sequence mess that the overpaid sucks who work for the city here refuse to address, and it seems that also gets me away from some idiots. Still the usual oblivious slowpokes and overcompensators, but nothing unusual.
I imagine her as the typical oblivious Yukon XL driver, camping out in the left lane while she eats lunch and drives...while her other half could be the typical lifted Dodge diesel dually 4x4 road rager.
I imagine her as the typical oblivious Yukon XL driver, camping out in the left lane
What? Left lane, left?? No, Sarah would be the "considerate" driver in the RIGHT lane, and, she would not be on the phone.
Now, the left lane driver would be pelosi, driving some kind of very very old out-of-date big barge antiquated vehicle and pushing/bumping aside anyone who is in her way.
I can't see Sarah being a remarkably good driver, somehow.
We can only speculate. But, given her prowess such as in running, sports, hunting, fishing, etc,, whatever, she appears to be very fit and alert and probably excels at whatever she does. She would more likely be a very considerate driver.
Maybe Nancy P could trade in her free military jet and fly on her broom from Disneyland, er, CA to Washington and back.
Also there is stimulus money that is going to help a reailroad up in grape/wine country here is CA and will also benefit Nancy's grape vine/ wine making enterprise. I guess that stimulus money did some good to a well deserved politician. Oh I forgot, the stimulus money has saved few jobs so far but I'll cross my fingers things will change.
Broomstick, that could be it. Maybe when her military jet is in the shop or when she isn't able to use it as some kind of travel expense deduction. The WA governor also uses a broomstick :shades:
I saw a good example of typical local obliviousness today. I was out early, around daybreak. I pull up at a light near where I live, and wait for it to change...I sit there for maybe 30 seconds, and a CRV drives by in the direction I'd be turning. I had a bad feeling. I drive down my desired road, which ends at a highway on-ramp. As it is early and I am in no hurry, I go no more than the limit and for a good part under, as the CRV and I am the only vehicles on the road. By the time I get close to the ramp, I am right behind the CRV as it is going much slower than I. And it doesn't speed up on the ramp....I swear we were going 25mph. When we hit the highway, it then veers left, and I pass on the right...shooting by, and I am still not even going the limit. It was light years behind me in no time, going maybe 40-45 tops on I-90. I won't describe the driver, but some can probably guess.
Authorities in Florida said residents who saw a man attempting to steal their car used the vehicle's remote-controlled locking mechanism to prevent his escape.
Dear fintail, it sounds like your "sixth sense driving instinct kicked in and you knew that that other driver was going to screw things up. And you took care of you.
Sometines I will be driving and the expression I use, "I just know" what that driver usually in front of me is going to do. And I take preventive action to avoid being around that car. I think its the ones that surprise me that makes me frightened as I crusie down the freeways in Disneyland-Ca. I am glad that you did not have a t/c.
on I95 inphilly yesterday. about 4:30 PM, near the philly airport. decent volume, but not clogged, and moving OK. Those in the area know that is a nasty section of road, with about 4 lanes. But, traffic moving well (proably about 70-75 in the left couple of lanes).
I am in the 2nd lane from the left, going "with the flow", and suddenly hear a buzz, and a prior gen WRX goes flying past on the left, closely followed by another one. Hard to judge, but when you are doing 70-75 and a car come up and shoots by at that speed differential, they must have been pushing or over triple digits.
Of course, didn't make it very far before they caught up to LLC traffic, and of course they zigged n and out a couple of times. Then pretty much got stuck when it all clogs up when a lane drops off going over a bridge.
Some people deserve to get snagged and dragged off in handcuffs. If someone had pulled out without seeing them it would have been carnage.
I think I'm a pretty good guesser/stereotyper. Give me a look at the car and driver, and I like to think I can assume what I am in for. I don't feel like I make many bad guesses. The driver and machine tell a lot about what is going to happen next. And yep, that makes the surprises that much louder. No doubt many LEOs think the same
Upper part of the PA turnpike (NE extension). 2 lanes, pretty curvy and up and down hilly at that part. Not too much traffic, but some Traffic flowing at around 70.
Got bottled up slightly in the left lane while some slow pokes sorted out their LLC issues. I was in the left lane waiting for it to clear so I could pass.
But, blasting up on my right this time, back to back jacked up 4x4 ford PUs, with way oversized tires. Probably running 85.
Damned near rammed into the poker in the RH lane ahead of me trying to stop, and about creamed the left lane guy trying to swerve around. Watching a beast like that try to make a high speed maneuver was interesting, to say the least.
.....an 'inconsiderate/idiot pedestrian' thing, but in my super-dangerous one-mile trip to the local CVS, during which speeds do not exceed 30mph, I end up (last) in a line of perhaps eight or nine vehicles waiting for a light to change (in my neighborhood, in well-designed Chicago, it's one of those that five streets converge, but somehow becomes roughly ten intersections, so the waiting is sometimes long for lights to change, and when lights do change, you'd better watch in all directions, because natch, people run the lights and/or back-up traffic into the other intersections, and also you'd better hustle or your trip will take longer driving than walking). Anywho, of course as soon as our light turns green, a couple of idiot 13/14 year-old buoys decide to dart out for a second (ignoring lights/walk signs, traffic and the like), then retreat, UNTIL, of course, I am almost to the intersection (and I am the LAST car in line, NOBODY behind me, they may have needed to wait another three seconds for me to clear MY green light), then they both sauntered out as if I weren't there, pants fallin' down, lookin' at me like I did somehing wrong. Normally, I feel guilty for calling kids '[non-permissible content removed]' or 'retardo', but not in this case. And they looked at ME like I were crazy for yelling at them. I guess I should learn patience, especially for doofus fourteen year-olds (they don't change), and especially in my 'hood, but still. I wanted to mow them down, seriously. Terrible, I know. It's just that I learned not to walk in front of moving cars, against their right-of-way or traffic light, when I was maybe five years old....is that too much to ask?
I feel so terrible, Officer. My light was green and I didn't see the boys walk into my path. Why do such tragedies happen? Why, oh WHY ???
Am I free to go now?
The whole idea behind natural selection is to eliminate individuals carrying the defective genes BEFORE they reproduce; passing the negative traits on to another generation. :P
"The driver and machine tell a lot about what is going to happen next." Well said fintail. I think people forget what their vehicle can do and cannot do if they are in an tight pinch. I believe that real drivers, just don't steer their 3000 lb car down the road, they know what their vehicles can and cannot do and they are safe drivers.
I believe that some drivers are frightened by the fast pace of freeways, or the congestion of a two lane roadway. I remember stopping a very nice male driver in 1978 on the Eastshore freeway going 20 mph in the left lane near the Bay Bridge connector. When I checked his driver's license, was outdated by (honest) 29 years!!! He told me he never renewed it because he was afraid to drive but he does drive to shop and to pray at his wife's cemetary plot.
I got him off the freeway and told him I would have to have him retested to renew his license. But I did not give him a citation.
Strange world, but the driver and how well his/she knows his/her car is a really important. And planning/thinking ahead is a good thing to avoid a tc.
Yeah, lots of scaredy cats in this area too. You can see it in the way they merge, and by the death-grip they keep on the wheel.
Yesterday I was stuck in a traffic jam at a long light because a minivan wouldn't take its free right turn. I think that whole thing scares people too.
I loved the small print, thank you for making me laugh out loud!!! Well, that was just it....I was the LAST damn car in line and they decide to walk (not RUN, of course) in front of me, then I become the [non-permissible content removed] for nearly running them over, and I get scowls, from 14 year-old morons. Doofuses.
I actually did mow a kid down one night... and no matter whose fault it is, it is still a sickening feeling hearing and feeling that crunch as they hit your hood.
It was dark and raining and I was in the left turn lane signaled by a green arrow, and you can only go on a green arrow. It turns to red after and you can't go until it cycles again. Other intersections have yielding greens and some also have yielding greens couple with a lagging green arrow. Anywho, I was car #3 or #4 in this lane getting ready to turn left. It's dark and raining and the light turns green. The line moves forward and as I make my turn, just as I about to cross the crosswalk at the end of the the turn, my wife hollers "STOP STOP". A silly kid (probably 14 yrs old) was pedaling his bike across the intersection. I saw him at the last second, hit my brakes and bumped him. He bumped up over the hood, rolled over off the passenger side fender. The bike was a mangled mess. I pulled over and he jumps up a bit dazed, grabs his bike and drags it to the side of the road. He appears to be okay, but we ended up calling the paramedics and the police showed up. THe paramedics check him over and then take him in for further evaluation. After speaking to several witnesses, the cops comes over to me, checks out my info and finding that it checks out (good license, registration, etc...) and then confirms my story with the others who witnessed what happened. He looks at the dent in my hood (a good fist sized dent) and makes sure we are okay. He then tells me that I am good to go. He says the kid was doing several things wrong and that he's lucky not more happened to him. The kid was wearing dark clothing, traveling against traffic, had no reflectors on his bike, wasn't wearing a helmet (not sure if it was law or not) and was crossing against the green. There wasn't anything I could have really done to avoid hitting him. I didn't even see him until he bopped up onto my hood. I'm just glad he came out okay with just a couple bumps and scrapes. I never saw or heard from him again. Prolly could have pursued it and got my hood repaired, but didn't really want to get involved in that mess....
I might have told my pedestrian impact story before, but I'll do it again. You are right about the helpless feeling. A boy and girl crossed into my path in a 25 mph zone in city. The street was relatively narrow with parking on both sides. Residential neighborhood.
A box truck had turned onto the street going the opposite way from me. They started across the street behind the box truck and rapidly walked into my side of the street; the truck hid my car from their view and hid them from me. The 8-10 year old girl hit her face onto my Mustang's hood and left a tooth scrape in the paint. I was not speeding and hit the brakes so hard I blew the cup in the rear brake cylinder (no power assist on the brakes--the good old days).
Her younger brother was behind her walking his bicycle across.
I think her parents called or sent me a note apologizing that she did that. They realized it was very stressful to me.
....I didn't mean to make my story sound 'jokey', and of course I would never actually want to mow down anyone, in a literal sense. It's just that these two morons walked right in front of my moving car. But, in a general way, I get it: they're two 14-ish doofus kids. I was there once, as were we all, though like I said, I sure as hell didn't walk in front of moving vehicles (especially the very last one in line). They didn't deserve to be mowed down, but my bitching them out slightly was appropriate, though I kinda felt bad about it immediately after. I've officially become the grouchy middle-aged guy who gets pissed off at kids.
Last tuesday in framingham, MA, an F150 passed me *on the sidewalk* after me & car-in-front had both stopped at a red light on rt 126. Then he appeared to notice the red light, slammed on his brakes, crossed the next/orthogonal sidewalk, and skidded to a stop across the cross-street, blocking both lanes This was a sunny warm day when lots of moms were strolling their kids around on sidewalks nearby - but luckily none at that spot. The F150 license plate was MA 4WM-250 . I probably should have reported it to the cops but did not. Maybe I should report it to them today. !
....at this point it'd be a your word against his/hers situation, if the cops even bothered to check up on the situation, which in itself is less than doubtful.
Our (Chicago's, and I doubt we're unique) cool thing to do (and, typically, the offenders are those not born here, nor trained here to drive, but it's racist so I'll just shut up) is for drivers to cut through the 7-11/gas station/Walgreen's/currency exchange parking lot to turn right because they can't wait fifteen friggin' seconds for the light to change, or for the bus to load/unload. Laws apply only to certain people, I guess, as usual, or are enforced selectively in super-non-corrupt Chicago/Cook County/IL.
We have a large "strip mall" here (a large grocery store, a Target and a few other rather large retailers there) that I see a lot of people cutting through to avoid a light. One time I pulled into there to pick up something at the grocery store on the way to work. When I did that I noticed I was being followed by a police care who stopped and made sure I went into the store.

It seems to me that if you have to go through that much "retail" traffic to avoid a light, you better off just waiting for the light. The unpredictability of pedestrians, having to go 5 MPH, cars stopped in front of the stores, etc just makes it seem like it would actually take longer??? Maybe I am imagining it all wrong, but what comes to my mind is the the Costco parking lot in my area that has to be navigated if you want to get to the Wal-mart that also has to be navigated if you also wanted to go to Lowes which you must also plow through if you wanted to get to Old Navy or Pet's Mart and then if you're hungry after that you can go to Olive Garden after fording Safeway.
Which if you have your breakfast before you start you're journey and don't stop at anyplace you might make it to Olive Garden before the lunch rush... There are other ways to do this mess, but there is a path straight through to all these places along stretch that you can use without ever hitting the main highway to the east which has very few turn offs; one at each end of the complex for left turners and only 2 others for right turners.
The west side is better, but it too is always clogged as there are also several business parks on the other side of that road and traffic is always a gamble. Still trying to get through the Costco parking lot, Wal-Mart parking lot, Lowes, Old Navy, oh and Staples too, then Pets Mart Safeway and finally Olive Garden can literally take several several minutes.... This whole retail complex is always a logistical nightmare. There are also a couple of banks, a McDonalds, Outback Steakhouse and a few other businesses that are at the backs of the parking lots, including Costco's gas station. Add those into the mix and if you have to go there, just plan on being there awhile just because of the traffic.
However, there are a lot of small, strip mall places that people drive through to avoid lights. If the intersection is very crowded, people can save a lot of time. It doesn't make it right, however.
.....have several speed bumps, stop signs at the crosswalks and intersecting (in the 'through lanes' cloest to the stores) and entry/exit lanes from perpindicular streets, so it's not exactly any quicker. If you try to cut through and go to the 'back' of the parking lot, most of them have uneven parking lanes, so no 'through' streets, again foiling any cut-throughs.
True... at 7:30 most of the places I mentioned are closed or barely open. And traffic at that time is incredible. There is one light at each end of the complex and a good half mile inbetween the two lights. Getting through there takes a couple of cycles. I might try it one day and see if I can whiz through all these establishments and see if I can come out better that the other end. :shades: Although experience dictates that when I try one of these fuzzy type of routes, you usually never come up better and very rarely make it even and usually end up in a worse position...
(I NEVER try to cut through parking lots, but there are several places around town that you can take different streets from the "straight shot" route and sometimes beat the lights and traffic... but it's always a crap shoot when I do that.)
.....it's always reassuring to know that 24 year-old drunk guys (inexplicably) can afford $100k+ vehicles capable of going 150mph, and/or that someone is willing to purchase one for them.
Some people never cease to amaze me. This morning on the way in to the office, 3 lane road, far right lane ends heading into an on ramp to another highway. Two left lanes starting to back up into contruction zone. I am in far right traveling toward and with full intention to take the on ramp when a few hundred feet before the ramp a newish Corolla pulls out in front of me, realizes the lane is an exit only and proceeds to slam on the brakes and just sit there. Meanwhile a giant lifted Ford pickup is praying for his life he stops in time missing me by maybe a foot.

From what I have read about Ms Palin, she eats very little, subsisting largely on caffeinated drinks, hence the alert appearance. :shades:
Nope Pelosi crosses the country on a military jet. So she would be in the left side of the sky doing 100 under the flow of traffic. :shades:
