Thanks for the response "freestyle gal". We will keep a look out for you.
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
Yes, freestyle gal, they are rare. One of the larger Ford dealers we visited Saturday only had two SELs, and was in the process of seelling one of them. They mainly sell trucks, expeditions, and some Mustangs. Another dealer had at least six, including the Limited with all options which we drove.

ANOTHERWAGON is right! Thou wilt faceth the chime, whatever that is =).

Let me adjust the CVT pulley ratios, oops, change gears, =) to answer your questions.

    ---------

Freebie owners agree it's NOT underpowered. It's NOT overpowered either. In short, in the words of the uninvited house guest of the three bears ;), "just right".

I drove our Freebie from NJ to FL and back, plus trips in & around Orlando. I only felt it needing a bit more power for 5-10 seconds out of 4,000 miles.

The key is that the CVT delivers more horse & torque INTO THE PAVEMENT than a "n-gear" transmission would (with the same engine). That's what critics miss.

    ---------

Regarding new engines, we expect 2007 Freebies to start carrying Duratec 35s. This engine will power many Fords, Mercs, etc. thanks to its wide tuning range. (ANT14, one of the best sources here, noted it could exceed 300 HP, depending on its tuning.)

My "guesstimate" is that they'll tune Freebie 35s' engines to have an equal HP-torque value, AKA mimic 30s' performance curve.

    * This should reduce CVT performance adjustments, as the new Duratec 35 engine will 1.x times the performance of the 30s. ("x" means how much more output the new engine brings.) The horse & torque curves would be about the same, only higher numbers.

    * Recall current Duratec 30 Freebies are 203 & 207 respectively.

    My "guesstimate".

I went there to recall Freebie's horse & torque numbers. Their Freebie section stated "5-star front & side ratings, tested without the side bags".

This follows the 500s' claim as it received its ratings earlier. (The 500 & Freebie use the same chassis, etc.)

I got my LTD Freebie with the side bags. Does that count for six stars? =)

    Dear Canuck6:

Maybe they aren't doing this up your way, but I got a phone call from Ford wanting me to do a phone survey abou the car and add in anything else I wanted. I was out so my husband took the call and talked with the person. So, I guess they are interested in what we think. Yeah, I'm with you on the silly stuff like no light in the glove box and how cool would it be to have a itty bitty light in the cubby on the dash? Of course, it doesn't hold a lot so you can find what you need by feel, but still...

I'm still amazed at how well thought-out all the creature comforts are. I traded in my 2003 Expedition, which I thought was pretty well done, but the Freestyle is mo' bettah by a bunch.

I drove by a group of nice looking gentlemen today and they were checking me out as I drove by but then I realized, no, they were checking out the car! And when you are sitting at a stop light and you notice someone looking at the car and trying to figure out what it is, pop the dash cubby--oh the look of envy ;-) Is that little detail in the Chrysler Pacifica? It's a great place for the phone charger and Chapstick!

I was thinking it'd be a great place for the .357 Magnum. ;)

What would be cool is if you could somehow build a charger for you iPod and a connection back to the Aux-In inputs on the DVD player in that area.

Check out the press release on Ford's site about the 05 Volvos. They will all have Ipod connectivity. Some thru the glove box - pretty cool. They should share...
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
I'd rather avoid the complexity of Volvo's computer system Vadis where you cannot even add a CD changer without a softwear upgrade....

    Simple is good.

Someone will figure out how to use that Aux button soon.

Does anyone else have trouble adjusting the rear-view mirror? I'm a fairly small person and find it hard to get my hands in the position to adjust the mirror, my husband really has a hard time with it. While my SEL is loaded, I don't have the memory seating--I think that's only available in the Limited. That is a must for next new car I think. I'm 5'4", my husband is 6' tall. In my Expedition, he could at least get in it first to make the adjustments he needed. He can't even get in the Freestyle when it's in my adjustments. He has to stand outside and push the button to bring the seat all the way back, and stoop over to raise the steering wheel; kind of a pain for him That little lever to adjust the steering wheel takes a little muscle, too--hard for those of us with carpal tunnel trouble. Does the rear view mirror adjust itself, too, in the memory seating? Well, I guess I could be considerate and push the seat back and steering wheel up before I leave the car...

barnstormer: oh my--wouldn't fit in the first place, and I'm in California, in the Bay Area no less, so noooooo, ixnay on the unsgnay (and pig latin, too!). Nah, I'll just pull my Chapstick outta there or pull the phone charger out and plug it in real quick (you know the drill, you're talking on the cell, it beeps that your battery is about dead, but if you can plug the charger in real quick--voila! Keep on talking (and driving, I know.....) All that is probably scarier than that other thing you were talking about :-0

Well hubby saw the Freestyle today at the dealer, sat it and played around a while. Didn't drive since he was on lunch. So I drove all 50 miles out there to have a look and Nope, gone - I think they were doing the "dealer prep thing" so still haven't been in it.

So it arrived on time but we don't have it yet....

FYI- We ordered right at Tgiving. Build date was 1/10 and it was there today 1/25.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
The rearview mirror setting is NOT retained. Only the position of the driver's seat, pedals, and the two side mirrors are retained.

Lumbar support is also NOT retained.

You should be smelling the leather soon!

    It'll be worth the wait.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
PS: you should be able to get each key fob (and key) to remember a different driver position. Check your instruction manual. Effectively, when you open the door with the key fob, the seats and mirrors will adjust automatically without you having to do anything else.

I agree that the tilt wheel adjustment requires more effort than other systems I've used (eg, Taurus).

We are considering a Freestyle with the new CVT transmission, but have some reservations on this first-year technology. However, we understand that this is the same transmission that has been used in Audis for some years. Does anyone have any helpful (pro or con) feedback for us?

    Thanks!
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
Only the chain, is the same one used in an Audi. Everything else is designed by Ford and ZF. If you scroll back you might be able to find more information related to it, how it works, etc.

Its certainly not first year technology, having been used in Audis,VW, MINI and Fords in Europe. The actual box in the freestyle is a heavier duty version of that ZF box.

Haven't heard from you for a while.

    Everything ok?

He said he would be on Vac for 2 weeks with limited dialup access. Even though he's missed I don't wish his Vac to be over too soon. (For his sake)

Sounds like you got yours a little faster than mine. I ordered on 10/28 and got it on 1/7. It arrived on the morning of 1/7 and I drove it home that afternoon. Let us know how you like it. I am still loving mine.

We just picked up our LTD/AWD Freestyle last night, and I've got to say that I'm real impressed so far. My soon-to-be 16 year old son, who is "inheriting" his mother's 2002 Escape, is already complaining about the relatively lousy radio in the Escape after listening to the one in the Freestyle.

We actually went car shopping last weekend for a 2004 Explorer, since the deals were getting so good. The family consensus was that the V8 Explorer was a lot of fun to actually drive, but the Freestyle was a lot more comfortable for passengers. We wanted one without a moonroof, so the dealer found one in North Arkansas, that he had someone drive up for us. It's T-green, with everything but the moonroof and the DVD. The dealership was easy to work with, pricing it out at essentially invoice minus $750 using the X Plan. I don't usually get extended warranties, but since this is a new model with a drivetrain that would be expensive to repair, I opted to get one for 100K/6 years. The dealer wanted $2200 for his Ford sponsored plan, but when I let him know that I found one on the internet from Ford for $600 less, he agreed to match the internet price. It seems that this is the kind of stuff that dealers are making into real profit generators.

Before turning over the check to the dealer, I took the car out for a test to see if I could replicate some of the issues mentioned in this forum. I found just a little bit of torque steer to the right when I accelerated hard from a stop, but it was very minor compared to other cars I've had. I did find that when I cornered hard, faster than the law or common sense dictates, the front end feels a little light if you let up on the gas. I think this is somewhat due to the tires and wheels that come with the limited. Won't be an issue if I drive like a sane person and don't go into a corner so hard fast that I have to slow dramatically.

Anyway, I also have a question. Can anyone tell me how the heated outside mirrors work? The owner's manual does not address that option. I'm guessing that they work when you turn on the rear defrost, but would appreciate an answer from someone who knows for sure. Thanks!
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
    Lumber,

I'm fine thanks. Just had vacation for the past 2 weeks, and where I was spending it, only had dialup. I was quite frustrated.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
Hi - Are folks that are getting the warranties getting ExtraCare or PremiumCare or what? Trying to weed through the pricing choices.

    Thanks-
  • pnewbypnewby Member Posts: 277
Premium Care, $0 deductible, first day rental coverage. Ford ESP $1250 for me. I've had it before and it's always worked well. I've also had the equivalent Easy Care (brand) warranty and it was fine.
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
I have found the side mirrors heat when the rear defrost is turned on. If there are other means to activate the heated mirrors, I have not found them yet.

Enjoy your new Freebie. Have had my Redfire AWD/SEL for a month and a half and it has been great!
  • kcboscokcbosco Member Posts: 4
The dealer tried to sell me the Easy Care package, but I ended up with him selling me the PremiumCARE package 100K/6 Year for $1620, with $100 deductible. Talking with him and looking at the literature, the 2 packages seem to be identical and both are backed by Ford. He claimed that he was not making any profit off me, but I bet there was something in it for him.

    Northlakes

Thanks very much for the info; with any luck the weather will stay nice enough around here that I won't have to try them out. It is also encouraging that you and so many others are having such great experiences with their Freebies.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
Get the PremiumCare. I got the $50 deductible, for $1185. That was for 6yr/75k miles.

Check the prices on http://www.fordwarrantys.com (y, not ie) and insist that the dealer match the prices. Or just buy it there. Be sure for the email to wait for the special they're offering that month.
  • sac ltd awdsac ltd awd Member Posts: 12
I tried to buy the extended warranty online, but could not. If you live in California extended warranties can not be purchased online. Ford's warranty site will tell you this when you try to buy. The 75K/6yr cost me $200 more than what I was quoted online and the dealer would not match the online cost. I got a good price on the Freestyle itself, so I guess he decided to make his profit selling me the warranty(?)

    ******

I always thought the heated mirrors worked whenever you started the car. My mirrors seem to be heating without having the defrost or other systems going.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
OK - What about these mtn plans?
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
And...did anyone get the Handsfree accessory? How much was it?

What about the cargo holder - anyone see that in person yet...
  • freestyle galfreestyle gal Member Posts: 79
All this maintenance contract stuff makes me feel nervous! Every time I've ever bought one I never used it, or something would go wrong 2 days after the extended warranty expired (how can the engineers figure out these things with such accuracy?)When we bought the Freestyle, we didn't get hit with the pitch for the extended warranty until we got into the finance office. $2,000 was their price and when we said no thanks, the guy asked how much we would be willing to pay. Huh? We said $500. He said "nice try." So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have any really huge problems after my 36/36 runs out.

About the heated mirror--I'm assuming it's the same as my Explorer and Expedition: they come on when you turn on the defrosters--now the question is (and I will try this out): either defroster? just the front? just the back? I'll bet if I read the manual...but it's in my glove box and it's raining outside (I'm such a wuss). Besides, it's so much more fun getting answers here ;-)
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,814
about heated mirrors; i have an explorer, but never looked it up. how do they work? :) in my focus, they are controlled by the rear defroster.

for extended warranty prices, do a search on 'ford warranties'. look for lombard ford. they will sell you a ford warranty. otoh, you could take that price and run it by your local dealer.

maybe instead of 'good try' they might say 'it's a deal'.

"So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have any really huge problems after my 36/36 runs out."

I also opted not to buy the extended warranty. From my experience on my pervious 2 cars (Chevy and Toyota), the major breakage usually happens after the warranty is over, regular or extended. I needed to replace the trans on my Camry at 90,000 miles, and that wasn't a CVT.
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
If you just put the $2,000 away in some sort of investment, you will have more than $2,000 to pay for a repair if it is needed, but will still have the $2,000 plus the gain if a repair is not needed. I can not understand why anyone would buy an extended warranty, unless they think the car is such junk that it will need many thousands of dollars of unexpected repairs.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
That's the advice I usually give to people. Unfortunately in this debt consumed economy, it's harder for most people to not touch those $2k they have set aside. I'm currently "holding" 3 such accounts for friends that are tempted to tap into it.

This is a great forum for somebody like me who is out there looking at suitable vehicles for our family. I often need to carry 5 adults and their luggage on 300 to 700 mile trips (We have been doing that very nicely in an Intrepid with its big trunk). When I started looking at new vehicles, I see how small the trunks are in many. We live in a very flat (and warm--no snow) area (although do travel to hilly areas) so think FWD is all I need. Have looked at Toyota Highlander, Chrysler Pacifica, Nissan Murano, as well as the 500, and think it is coming down to the 500 (which has an enormous trunk--bigger even than the Intrepid) or the Freestyle. I'm inclined toward the latter right now.
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
Bet they would appreciate the ability to use all three rows and have space to stretch out. Pilot is nowhere near as comfy in the third row which sits very low in the vehicle.
  • preferbicyclespreferbicycles Member Posts: 33
Since you didn't mention any minivans, I assume you don't like them for some reason, since they would seem to meet your stated needs.

While I personally like the Freestyle and have one on order, I'm curious it there is some reason you

didn't check out the Honda Pilot, which a lot of people seem to like.

The Freestyle does seem to have more room though.
  • smithedsmithed Member Posts: 444
Well, I didn't check out any SUVs. I see the Freestyle as more of a station wagon (I guess those are called crossover these days) than an SUV. It is based on a sedan (the Five Hundred), not a ladder and frame (truck) chassis, the primary drive is FWD with an AWD option, not RWD with AWD option (which is more SUV like). I'm sure the Pilot is nice, but isn't it a truck? Maybe we should look there.

Yes, a minivan would also fit our needs. I would have a hard time convincing the wife that that was the way to go. And after all, if the wife isn't happy, noone is happy. (Okay you can say what you want about who is wearing the pants). Thanks, folks
  • freestyle galfreestyle gal Member Posts: 79
"...if the wife isn't happy no one is happy."

Dear smithed: you sound like a very wise man to me. This is how we get around cars in my house: Who will be driving it the most? Who will be making the payments? So, my better half has his F-150 Lariat that he will probably drive until the wheels fall off. I'm driving the Freestyle and I buy a new car when I get about 50K (usually about 2 years) on the previous one and if technology is around that will allow me to get better mileage, fewer emissions, etc. Two completely different approaches--his car owning smarts are much better than mine to be sure. We both work, we have completely different needs in cars so we each take care of own. Everybody's happy!
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
Pilot is based on the last gen Odyssey minivan chassis, also shared with the Acura MDX. Same style of construction as Freestyle
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
We did cross shop the Pilot and are getting the Freestyle. They are very comparable but there were things the Freestyle had that we really liked.

The option for the 2nd console - all depends on what you want.

Don't have to remove headrest to fold out seats.

More leg room in the 3rd seat - we had the 12 year old test it out.

Also, the Pilot felt a lot like driving a van and the Freestyle was a bit more fun.

And, hubby didn't like the shifter on the steering wheel.

We just liked the Freestyle package better.

Oh and the Pilot was a little more "step up" to get in to....
  • smithedsmithed Member Posts: 444
    Thanks for that information.
  • smithedsmithed Member Posts: 444
Our way is a little different. We share the vehicles and might take a different one on a given day depending on our needs and destinations for that day.

Freestyle had 2,700 miles so decided to have the oil changed. Went to Jiffy Lube (do I hear a collective gasp from the gear-heads)? They tried to put the wrong oil in it (had to get the owner's manual and show them in print what I needed). They put in full-synthetic Pennzoil. I'll hop on over theoilguy.com or whatever it is and see what horrible thing I might have done by using that oil :-0

I then went to the information center and reset the oil change (said it was still 42% good, or something to that effect). One weird thing was that my mileage was reading 22.1 MPG in the message center. After I got my oil changed, it read 14MPG. I guess a battery disconnect might do that, but wouldn't that wipe out everything else (clock, trip meter, etc.)? Anyway, the MPG is changing rapidly back up and I assume that it will end up I where it was before the oil change before too long.

I hope I didn't screw up back not taking it to the dealership for the oil change. I found myself feeling faint for just a moment when they said they checked the transmission fluid. If they screwed something up, the system info isn't registering it yet. Burn incense for me.....
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
Don't worry about synthetic, its 100% compatible with dino oil. I've run Mobil 1 in my truck for 130k (changed every 5k) and its valve train (the most easily visable part of the engines internals) looks more like a low mileage engine, still shiny rather than blackened with carbon.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
Well, it is finally here. We really love it so far. Drove back to this side of the world after the trip to go get it. No problems.

The dealer did get two sales off of our car. It is the only one like it in the SE right now and they could have sold it 4 times in the past two days. Another couple ordered one based on seeing ours.

I'm off to read the ol'manual and then lala land.

Just added a moonroof deflector to my LTD/AWD. Great! It was 45 degrees (F) the other day in Baltimore and here I am running with the MR open, no noise, no wind, and quiet. Definitely worth it. BTW 6300 miles and I like it better every day. It may be the best car/SUV/SW I have ever owned. I just don't know what it is, but I still luv it!
