I'd be interested in a diesel if they made one for North America. I'm not concerned with power so much as I'm concerned with fuel economy,

There are several interesting items found in www.autoanything.com You can also request a brochure. Check this out... WeatherTech Rubber Mats, Door-to-Door Rubber Mats (Interlocking mats provides 100% coverage), Cargo Liner (if you don't like the Kia cargo tray), Rok-Grad Headlights protective tape, Bene-Vento sunroof deflector, WeatherTech Rain deflector, etc. Also, check out the mats and cargo liners from Husky.
StevePlll - I was going to ask question about the government regulation on side airbag. There are several types of side airbag, as far as I know. Airbag in the door panel, airbag in the side of the seat, airbag in the window frame (curtain type). My concern is this side airbag do more harm than save life, especially for small children.
  • StevePIIIStevePIII Member Posts: 55
I can find nothing on the Kia website IR to this. All I have found is that they can be fatal to small children if they are sleeping or resting their head aginst the glass.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I put my 7 months old in the middle seat with a car seat not because of the side airbag. It is because it would be safer in any side impact accident. Now I am concerning this after you have raised this issue. I don't think there is any guildline or standard (or regulation) yet for the side airbag. Any links?

I have done multiple searches and I have not come up with any Current information. only back in 98/99 when they began installing them in cars. Please let me know if you come up with anything -- I was going to finalize the deal with the Sorento tomorrow. -- I just need to be sure of my kids saftey. thanks
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
StevePlll - Nothing from Kia. But looked at the Volvo website on their new XC90 with side curtain airbag (for all three rows) saying... "giving your children additional head protection" in a side impact or rollover. Other than that, most auto manufacturers just said not to put child under 12 in the front seat.

Just looked at the NHTSB site, for example, they rated Honda Pliot 5 stars for side impact crash test (with 3000 lbs barrier moving at 38.5 mph into standing vehicle, which brings the 5% or less chance of serious injury. They are going to test Sorento soon.

I'm having trouble locking my steering wheel after removing the key. I've turn the wheel 3/4
    without any luck.

Has anyone experience this problem ?

Canadian models do not have outside temp. on the trip computer for the luxury models. But I've notice the AMB button on the control panel registers a temperature reading.
Should this be the outside or inside temperature reading?
    Thank you for your feedback

I usually follow the philosophy that every one is entitled to an opinion and should be able to voice it. I have kept quiet so far and now I am going to voice mine. Aside from the Diesel posts, I HAVE HAD IT WITH PEOPLE WHINING AND COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SORENTO'S MPG! I notice the only people complaining about it are those who dont own a Sorento! It's great that people who dont currently own a Sorento have something to share and add on this forum but if you just have to log in to complain and throw in their peanuts about how the Sorento's gas mileage is not good enough for them -- BY ALL MEANS, DON'T BUY THE SORENTO AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!
There, I have said my piece, I hope I did not offend anyone, but that has been building up for about a week.

P.S. I am buying a Sorento this week, and I know I am going to enjoy every mile I get to the gallon.

If anyone has the Load Leveler -- I need to know if they think it is worth it -- or if anyone who did not get it, wishes they did -- Please let me know asap

In a perfect world one could buy a SUV for 20k that had 300hp, tow 8000 lbs, seat eight persons, get 25mpg, and ride like a Lexus. Real world. The Sorento's plusses for a midsize SUV: Price, interior room, warranty, looks, and good craftsmanship. I agree the hp is average and the mpg isn't great but every plus has a minus. Even high end vehicles have a minus, price. Weighing everything good and bad about the Sorento I will be purchasing my wife one the week of the 17th. I think vehicle preferance is an individual thing. If hp and mpg are important to you don't buy a Sorento. Ditto's to StevePIII

StevePlll - My Sorento EX 4WD has TOD, luxury package, ABS, spoiler and auto load leveling. I didn't want the auto leveling. But the dealer has only few Sorento EXs in the lot. I just wanted the EX 4WD with luxury package. Then I picked the beige one with this factory installed option. The dealer sold me this option as dealer cost, $440? There is no button to push. The special designed rear shocks/suspensions will automatically adjust the height when towing or loading with heavy cargo. It is really an option to me. I didn't have much choice back then or have to wait until the next shipment. It is up to you if you are going to tow something or shop more often at home improvement store or wholesale club.

Be sure come back and tell us more about you ownership experience. It is good when you have 0% APR for your Sorento. Enjoy it!

What a great car ! Just traded in my GMC Envoy for this baby and love it.
I made my decision at the Toronto car show 2 week ago after viewing the competition . They had 3 Sorento’s on the floor and you had to wait to get in the drivers seat. Peoples first expression was that Kia had found a winner and the competition could learn from them. I also waited for the Porsche Cayenne and the Mini but that’s another story.
    I also own a 62MGA, 65MGB , 2000 Yamaha Roadstar 1600cc, a great mountain bike and a gas furnace on 24/7 (it’s pretty cold here).
I know something about gas, futures are up 60% so is my electricity rate.
I read the gas consumption PRIOR to buying the car and know approximately how much I should expect to pay for my average consumption this year using Einstein’s consumption’s theory.
You think 3 maybe 8 mpg will make a difference, hope you have a strong heart, your next utility bill should give you a jumpstart.
Lots of snow here this morning should take me an extra hour to get through traffic, bummer can’t wait.

Car looks great with the rest of my small collection…fill ’er up!
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I didn't mean to upset anyone. I was mearly looking at all the SUVs at the Auto Show (like swamps) and was shocked as to how bad the mileage was on the Sorento. Otherwise I was fairly impressed. If Kia can prove to me the thing is reliable over the next couple of years and improve the engines efficiency, I will consider one.

    Hi anyone,

I got a quote from a local dealer, LX 2WD for $16999. Is it a good price? What about the LX 4WD?After I got mine in December, I have not done any research on Sorento pricing. This is for my friend.
  • drieddried Member Posts: 36
I don't have the load leveling on my EX and I'm pretty sure it won't be absolutely needed for towing as long as you keep the tongue weight within reason (maybe 300lb). When I bought the Sorento, I was a little concerned about the rear suspension stiffness w/o the load leveling, so here's what I did. I put people on the back end/bumper of the car until we got to what I thought was around 300lb (i.e. tongue weight). Then I checked the sag of the rear suspension. What I found was that the sag was very minimal, maybe only a few inches. Based on that, I didn't see a reason to have the auto load leveling for towing reasons. If you're going to put A LOT of weight in the back of the car, it might make a difference, but I'm extremely pleased with the suspension as it is.

The brochure, website and owner's manual show some different in picture when loading or towing on the vehicle equipped with auto leveling. Sounds like they put 1000 pounds stuff in the back. I haven't tested it on mine with auto leveling. I did put few 50 lbs bags of rock salt in the cargo. Nothing happened. I got this option because it was only few Sorentos in the lot. If I were you or someone, I would spend the money on ABS.

StevePIII- Just like lok888, I got my EX with the self leveling suspension- not because I wanted it, but because the vehicle was in stock had every other option I wanted. The dealer made the purchase a little sweeter by only charging me $400 for the option. I have yet to tow my trailer with the Sorento since the trailer is still buried under snow in my yard. However, the self leveling suspension is invisible in normal driving. It doesn't seem to add any harshness to the ride and I have yet to test it's self leveling ability by loading up the Sorento with 5 passengers and a full cargo hold.
If you do a search on this message board, a while back several people posted descriptions of the self leveling operation and I posted the website for Sachs (the mfgr. of the self leveling shocks).
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
According to kiausaparts.com, the rear shock absorbers (a pair) cost $346.50 compare to the regular one for $145.25.
  • brooklyn1951brooklyn1951 Member Posts: 71
lok888- yeah, I saw that price also. Of course, you could probably do better in the aftermarket (KYB, Monroe, Gabriel) for the standard Sorento shocks. Although there probably aren't any other choices for the self levelizers, you could most likely get these Sachs shocks through an auto parts distibutor (NAPA, Pep Boys) for less than the dealer. Hopefully we won't need them for some time. But with all the money in Mass. going for that Big Hole... who knows, there's none left to maintain the roads!
As a long time Saab owner, I know that the dealer prices can be outrageous, but if you do a little research, you will usually find cheaper sources.

I have also noticed that my wheel doesn't lock no matter how much I turn the wheel.

I also have load leveling simply because it was on the only black EX lux my dealer could find. They gave it to me for free because I really didn't want it. I checked kia parts and the load leveling costs about $240 more to replace the whole system than just basic rear shocks. That is every piece of the system though not just the shocks themselves.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
brooklyn1951 - You're right. There are potholes everywhere, especially after several recent snow storms. As you may know, you can file a claim in your city or town hall for the damage. I think they usually last for long. I replaced the front shocks and spring at 100K miles on my Honda since I bought it new. Not by accident., just normal wear.

lilac0422 - May I ask what is the problem again? Wheel lock or unlock? With key in the ignition?
  • lilac0422lilac0422 Member Posts: 51
it is no big deal to me. I was just replying to someone else asking if anyone had the same thing happen. when you turn the car off and take the key out, the wheel should lock so that you can't spin it around freely. Mine doesn't seem to lock. in my old car, I could hear a distinct click when the wheel locked. That doesn't seem to happen with my sorento.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Isn't it the steering wheel lock because of the power steering in modern cars? The steering wheel needs power (with the engine on) in order to turn.

I posted on the problems section awhile back so sorry if you see this as a repeat. I've been following the Sorento for some time, even test drove one in January. I think it has lots of potential but am still concerned about reliability, resale, etc. Seems to me a good option would be to purchase something like a 2000 Lexus RX300 (which the Sorento is often compared to) at a price that is pretty close to the new Sorento. Drive it for a couple of years and watch what the Sorento does. At that time the Lexus will likely be worth more than the '03 Sorento (now two years old) and we'll have some good data. Does this make sense?
  • hollier1hollier1 Member Posts: 22
lok888 - I am no nuclear scientist but I looked up the Sorento LX on the Edmunds web site. Lo and behold it lists the base LX invoice at $18,435 + $495 destination. On cars.com the LX invoices for $18,805 + $595 destination. Are you for real posting the question, "is $16,999 a good price?"
  • StevePIIIStevePIII Member Posts: 55
Well, its done. no more being the single most frequent user of Kia.com. No more countless searches - literally the world over - on topics on the Kia Sorento. I put my deposit down today for my Sorento EX -- Lux. package, rear spoiler, ABS, Cargo tray, AND (thank you for everyone's input) Auto load leveling. Although I requested the RUby red / Stone Beige (that is the color my wife has on her sedona) I had to go with Indigo Blue with stone Beige. (they were unable to track down any in Red with my options) It should be here either Fri/monday. Thanks to everyone for all their comments and assistance.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
hollier1 - I am doing this for my friend. One local dealer keep sending me an email about the Sorento deal. I haven't done any research since I got my Sorento. The price seems well below the MSRP for this LX 2WD.

StevePlll - Congratulation! May I ask how much did you pay?

jrdowney - I was also thinking about a 2 or 3 years old RX300. But I decided not to. The retail price for an used Lexus maybe close to a brand new fully loaded Sorento. But you are driving a brand new with a 5yr/50000mile bumper-to-bumper warranty while others have another year to run before the factory warrant expires. Not to mention the repair cost. Well, the Lexus may worth more because it cost more. I think many posters have already expressed their opinions about the resale. Reliability? How about LR Discovery or Benz ML? Look at the data from the Consumer Reports.
  • StevePIIIStevePIII Member Posts: 55
Well I paid pretty close to MSRP because I had an issue. I had to get out of my Land Rover Discovery Lease which caused some Issues and cut into most, if not all, my negotiating room. -- But in two days I will be out of my troublesome LR and into a Sorento.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
StevePlll - Congratulations! May I ask how much did you pay for the destination charge?

StevePlll - Right! You are the guy who owns the LR Discovery. I guess not anymore. See! Someone will drive your 3 years old Discovery.

Steve (host) - I think it's $595 now. But my window sticker shows $495 when I got the car in December. Also, the MSRP for EX 4WD is now $24500, compares to mine at $24100. But most people are getting great discount plus the 0% APR.

Glad we got that (destination charge) figured out! What's a silly hundred bucks among friends anyway?

No problem. Sounds like the $100 increase is due to the higher gas price.

I am shopping for a mid size SUV for a second vehicle. Must have some off-road ability - I live in Colorado. I'm comparing Sorento, Liberty and 4Runner. The Sorento and Liberty are closely priced, the 4Runner is about $7,000 more - the way I want them equipped. Toyota clearly has the edge in reliability and resale, but it's pricey. I ususally keep my vehicles for 6-8 years.

I'm interested in any advice anyone would like to share. Has anyone taken their Sorento off-road? How did it do? I know the Jeep and Toyota are proven in that regard. Thanks.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
is not really off-road proven, at least not yet. The current itteration of 4-runner is the least off-road capable of any 4-runner ever produced...

I live in colorado as well...my wife and I are avid Mountain bikers...love to camp...etc.

We needed a vehicle that COULD be drive offroad...on many of the jeep trails here in the state. As you are, we looked at and were highly considering the Jeep Liberty...actually, we had already picked the one we wanted out...and were going to buy it.

THEN...I test drove the Sorento out of curiosity more than anything. I really loved the way the Kia looked. And was impressed by the fit and finish inside and out. Something the Jeep lacked in spades. But I figured I would have been let down in the test drive. What a surprise! I loved it...felt solid, had decent power (i dont need a race car), more room than the Jeep, and the value and content could not be matched by anybody else.

Now...yes, I have had my Sorento off road twice now. I bought my Sorento in November...when the snow was not around. I took mine up a few logging roads up 7 mile canyon on day...very steep and rocky. A few times I only had two or three wheels touching...but was very pleasantly surprised how the Sorento clawed and bit its way up and down the trails. Most of the driving I did was in 4-lo....and just creeped along. There was noticable side to side body motions that felt overly exagerated at times...but that is to be expected from this larger vehicle. I did scrape the bottom of the vehicle a few times...and will the underbody armour is pretty weak for someone that will be doing a lot of serious offroading. But then again those that do...modify these thing pretty quickly.

Anyway...hope that helps a little. Not a lot of off road experience in the Sorento...YET. But more to come...and I will keep all posted on my impressions.

I was wondering if it was possible to change the sensitivity of the auto headlight sensors. I feel that they come on a bit too late. For example, during our recent snow blitz here in the Northeast, it got very dark out during the snowstorms but the auto headlights did not kick on. Of course it is not a problem to just turn the lights on. I would like to change the sensitivity if I could. Any help would be appreciated

paisan, why would you say that about the 4runner? Because it's a new style? The 4 runner has more ground clearance, hill decent and ascent controls, locking diff, XREAS suspension and more. It would seem they are making the vehicle for off-road. And their past reputation is very good.

ivygrn, thanks for the information. Jeep certainly has a reputaion for off roading. I also liked the Kia on my test drive. You have to admit it's a big leap of faith to buy one of these. Like someone posted "I can't believe I bought a Kia." Also what dealer did you buy from? I live in south Denver and Broadway Kia was very disappointing.

I live in Boulder, and ended up purchasing our Sorento at the "Kia Cowboy Corral".

We visited 3 dealerships....one in Ft. Collins, one in Westminster, and the one in Longmont (cowboy corral). All of them were NOT very impressive at all. We purchased ours from the location in Longmont because of the better trade-in value they gave us on our Subaru Forester. Other than that, they have been terrible. So far Kia has not impressed me by their customer support...though I will say the follow up phone calls from Kia of America have been a good sign that at least they are trying to make things better. Time will tell.

If you were to of asked me a year ago if I would ever consider, let alone buy, a Kia....I would have laughed in your face for some time. But here I sit with one in my garage. Is it a leap of faith? I think in a lot of ways it is, but as well, I feel I did my homework and felt very confident with the decision to purchase the Sorento.

So far the truck has been great...but only time will tell how it holds up. The Korean car companies have shown that they are very commited to developing great products at a great value....something they have learned from Honda and Toyota.

    I will say this though...if I could have afforded more....ok, a lot more, I would have bought a 4-Runner in a heartbeat. I've always been a big 4-Runner fan.

But that said (and many here will chastize me for saying that)....I could not be more happy with my Sorento...it surprises me more and more each day.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
fitwright - I guess not. Mine did the same thing during the snow storm, rain and overcast sky. It's still too bright too activate the headlights. But the headlights always turn on when it drive underneath the highway overpass even for few seconds.

mwitt58714 - If I am right, the headlights (low beam) are H7 12V55W. So far, PIAA and Sylvania (Silver Star) are not making H7 bulbs. Maybe you can find something like super white or xenon HID look on www.ebaymotors.com But I don't trust those. I hope PIAA will make H7. I think anything which draws the same wattage as the factory use will be fine.

It may hae cool "electronic" controls for decent control, but there are a lot of things that make it less useful offroad than it's predecesor:

No hand brake- you are stuck relying on their "hill decent control"
Big overhang in the front and rear
    Long wheelbase
    17" rims on many models

Not saying it's "bad" persay but I'd take a previous version over the current one for offroading.

I know what you mean by taking a leap of faith. It took me a bit of thinking to trade my '97 Ford Escort in on a '99 Kia Sephia (new)in the spring of 1999. I haven't regretted it a bit after that and now I'm a literal Kia freak! I like Hyundai, too, but Kia's are my favorite. I've been reading this forum since it started and the only slightly-negative I can take away from it is the gas mileage. The trade-off is you get a real ladder-frame mid-size SUV that can party off road. I now own a 2001 Kia Sportage 4x4 and this little rig is great fun to take on the logging roads and put to the test! It has enough clearance to navigate through the ruts and bumps. Do take yours off-road sometime. It's pretty fun. Enjoy it!

Well, Saturday morning I went to Pick up my New Sorento. (EX, Lux. Package, rear Spoiler, and auto load leveling -- or so I thought) However when I got there It was everything I wanted -- but without the auto-load leveling. Funniest part was when the salesman tried to convince me that the auto load leveling was part of the Lux. Package. -- Then he came clean and said he "thought" it came with it and began to ask other salesman if it was not a stand alone option or other reasons why it might not be listed on the window sticker. Not one of them even knew what the auto load leveling was!! He said He told the sales manager to get a car with all the options I listed off to him several days prior( when I gave him a $1000 deposit!). Yeah, OK, whatever. He said he would look into it and call me at work -- never heard from him. Went by the dealership today and the car was sitting outside right in front of the front door (and the dingbats left the car unlocked -- this is the second time i have stopped by after hours and they have left a sorento unlocked!). Sure looks pretty and I am happy with that color. But if they come back to me and say that they cannot find one just like this one but with the load leveling should I keep waiting or take this one without the auto load leveling -- does anyone really feel that the load leveling is worth it? -- for me It was just a last minute option. Thanks for any input....

Also: when I opened the door (since it was unlocked I figured what the heck) I noticed that there was no VAS button next to the 4WD. I thought the Torque on demand came with hill assist control. i read it and i am not sure where. But if you click on shift-on-the-fly under the EX features section on Kia.com it shows the 4WD controls with the VAS?? Any know why?

Hi! I bought my Indigo Blue/Beige cladding EX in December. The only extra options I have are 4WD, ABS and the cargo tray. I decided to get beige cloth interior since I don't think leather holds up well with kids and pets. I posted in the problems section about a few chips in my windshield but other than that, I am extemely satisfied with my Sorento. I have been driving it through one of the toughest winters we've had in 3 years without any problems.
My sister and I researched Sorento's online and were very impressed. The test drive was my deciding factor. My sister went out and bought her Sorento in Aqua Blue 2 weeks ago! I've invited her to join this forum too so I will not spoil her chance to tell all about it.
I am one of only two Sorento owners in my area and I get alot of looks in traffic. I get alot of compliments from friends and co-workers. A guy I work with bought a Saturn Vue the same day and all of the guys asked to see inside my Sorento even though he was sitting in his Vue behind me trying to impress them with his booming stereo! Ha Ha! They didn't even look at his Vue at all.

I am ready to buy a Sorento EX, Lux pkg, ABS, and rear spoiler. I got one price $200 over invoice but they did not have any color I am interested in. I found a color I wanted but this dealer wants $500 over invoice. The only colors I want are Silver/pewter or White/pewter. I have been told these colors are hard to find and go first. I live in Baton Rouge and contacted every dealer from Houston Texas to Pensacola Florida. Nothing in the colors I want except the one $500 over in New Orleans. Price is $23,850. Has anyone else out there made a recent purchase or gotten and similar offers.

StevePIII - I have intentionally omited any Sorento from my search with load leveling because the things I trailer have a light tongue weight, less than 150 lbs. I feel it is just something else that can go wrong in the future. I had a 79 Buick Riveria that had a similar option. At 80,000 mi. it quit working and I didn't repair it because of cost. Just my 2 cents. I hope it was helpful. My experiences with Kia salesmen is that about 50% know the Sorento features/options well. The others try but give out a lot of wrong information.

I really don't indend to tow anything, only for loading a lot of stuff in the rear such as bags of topsoil in the summer (we will be doing a lot of work on our yard) and furniture a lot of the time ( I own a Furniture Store). Has anyone loaded a lot in the back of their Sorento and seen it droup?

I recently bought my car/truck at Emerald Coast Kia in Panama city Florida. Granted I just barely have 500 miles on it, but it is a dream. I previously have been a loyal Toyota buyer, but I wanted something different and with more features at a good price.
I have been reading the posts about this and that so I will share mine with you too.
1.Performance- runs like a bat out of hell. I took her from 0 to 100 to 0 and she performed flawlessly and quickly! It has ABS. I also had her up to 110 mph ( and climbing!!) and it handled like a sports car, no vibration or steering problems. Way too scary!! Won't do that too many times.
2.Appearance- black on gold cladding. EX model. BEAUTIFUL paint job, the doors close securely and solidly. My wife calls it a car because it is so luxurious, so why argue with her, she's right. The interior is beige cloth, feels like antler velvet, lovely. It has just enough glitz (brushed chrome, false wood, soft touch material) to catch one's eye without appearing cheap and garish.
3.Noise- my Sorento has some road noise that can be heard and felt at all speeds. This comes as no surprise or has no concern to me. I suppose most vehicles are subject to vibration or road hum at varying speeds and surfaces. The noise that I hear is not objectionable nor is the vibration a symptom (I think) of vehicular defect. Actually it probably is symptomatic of bad road repair!
4.Stereo- I haven't read any posts on the stereo here so i'll go. I am not a fan of boom music (i'm an old fart) so I had my doubt's about my acceptance of the stereo. It really does BOOM! Now I can get even with all you boom car maniacs! How about some Mantovani? Mwwahaha!
5.Interior room- let's just say, that if the wife kicks me out I won't have to sleep in the dog house anymore. RRoowf!
6.Did I leave anything out? Let me know.
My Sorento EX has 2Wd. ABS. Hitch.
I am getting 20 mpg overall. And that includes test driving it.
I don't require 4Wd because I live in Florida so it was an expense that I couldn't justify. I just sold my Toyota truck of 12 years and it had 4Wd and I hardly ever used it. Though, I formerly lived in the Brrrr! Northern USA, I did use it some there.
Problems- during the first week an oil sensor of some sort that was cross threaded (according to the dealer) started to leave an oil drip in my driveway. Naturally I freaked out. I took it to the dealer and they repaired it promptly (about an hour) and it has been fine since. That is the extent of my experience with Kia and the Sorento.
Regarding cost, I paid $23600 out the door. That is tax, plates, registration, doc stamps(a Florida thing). I feel it was a good value according to Edmunds and KBook.
On a final note, before someone admonishes me for driving like a lunatic and endagering the civilian population, I took the test drive WAYY out in the country where I would endanger ONLY myself. Ok, if I hit an animal at that speed, yup, it would be mush but so would I and you would never have gotten to read this review. As a rule I NEVER drive like that, only test drives and breaking in a new vehicle. After that, you can call me gramps.
