probably leave my toilet brush to cleaning my toilet ONLY! LOL! Just kidding, sort of(!!)...I need to do the same clean-up on some stubborn dirt on my Sportage's alloys...inside the open disc spaces on the front wheels only. Everything else cleans off with normal scrubbing. Lemme know what you guys find will work, OK? I'll buy the same scrubbers you guys buy.

Anyone hearing any buzz about the new Xterra at the NY auto show? Looks like the Sorento will be getting some pretty stiff competition at the lower price range of the "real" SUV market. New Xterra looks very similar, but is all new including a modified Titan chassis. New 4.0 V6 with 250 hp and 270 lbs of torque.

I hope Kia can figure out a way to up their hp and torque, or they will be suffering.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Did you see the Kia Mojave concept pick up with 280 hp 3.8L V6 engine? It is cool! Anyway, any aluminum block engine with 3.0L or more displacement should pump up 20 to 30 more hp than the iron one on Sorento. Kia is still slow on this. I don't think there will be any improvement next year, maybe 3rd row seat for us. It is an option for 2004 model in Korea. And I think lower cost will make up the sales.

I believe it's the new frontier chassis.

Are you kidding me? Have you priced the current Xterra?? It is at least $2000.00 more than the current Sorento when outfitted the same. Don't get me wrong, I hope the new Xterra is great. I have always like the Xterra. As a matter of fact I was looking at buying one until the Sorento came into the market.

I agree 100% with you on the horsepower point. Though my Sorento never really feels underpowered, more is always welcome... especially for towing and the mountains. I would like to see Kia put the 3.8 liter engine that is currently under developement into the Sorento as soon as possible. I would hate to see Kia lose anymore ground than they already have in the horsepower war. Kia has a very good truck in the Sorento... but it can be an excellent truck with a more powerful and refined drivetrain.

    1. From what I have read, the new Frontier, Pathfinder (the new 2005 regular one, not the Armada which is more directly based on the Titan) and Xterra will be sharing architecture with the Titan, in terms of the frame or platform. So yes, the Xterra is closely related to the Frontier, but both are supposedly related to the Titan.

    2. I did not say the Xterra will be cheaper or even quite as inexpensive as a Sorento. But as the Xterra is improved, it will present an option to Sorento buyers, in terms of a more loaded Sorento (with some features that probably will not even be available on an Xterra) as compared to a more basic Xterra.

In any case, while all the cute utes and crossovers have given a niche to the Sorento, a redesigned and improved Xterra will provide stiffer competition. Right now, the way I see it the only competition is an aging Rodeo with a great engine, Jeep Liberty (maybe) and the Suzuki (maybe).

I for one think increased competition is good in this vehicle class and would be interested to see how Kia responds.

I myself think it is the best looking SUV out there. However, it is small, compare to the Sorento. Also, I drove one, it doesn't handle as well as the Sorento either. And someone has already mentioned the price factor.
Lately, when I am driving on the street, it is like everyone's brother and sister drives an Xterra. It looked really cool when it first came out, but now it is so common. They are everywhere.
Nissan makes nice car, their new 350Z is just beautiful!! In fact, their entire new line of cars from 350Z to Pathfinder to Quest is just gorgeous. I don't think any other company right now has better looking cars and SUV than Nissan. That's just my opinion.
However, all in all, I still prefer my Sorento over an Xterra.

    Hi everyone,

Just to let you all know that my Sorento is back in my driveway :) Some of you may know that I had an accident with my truck back in february 2004.

I did an oil change and tire rotation yesterday. I have 18K miles on it. The service people suggested that I should do the 15K mile service either at dealer or elsewhere with documentation. I looked at the dealer's service list at 15K mile. Beside an oil change, most of the items are check-ups and inspections except fuel filter, air filter and PCV value replacement. Is it necessary to replace these items at 18K miles? Or dealer just want to make more profit. I can't find these from the owners manual.

slan - Glad that you have your baby back. It looks nice with the new front bumper guard and Sorento-T grill. You didn't put the alloy wheels and side step bars back yet.
  • slan_canadaslan_canada Member Posts: 54
Thanks everyone for your comments :)

My alloy wheels and my step bars will be back on in 1 or 2 weeks. I ordered something from Germany and I'm waiting for the product to arrives to put back my wheels.

    kiasorentoexl...

Yes, this grill is HOT HOT HOT ! :) hehe. Everyone lôôk @ it on the road :) I bought it from the manufacturer (Tomato A&P) based in Seoul. I know that you can also buy it from Tom @ Suv-Tuning.de

Aftermarket products for the Sorento are most of the time available only at the other side of the planet. In North America, there are not a lot of accessories available. I don't know why companies do not import such beautiful things !!
  • kiasorentoexlkiasorentoexl Member Posts: 7
If you don't mind me asking: how much did that cost you in total (parts, shipping & duties)?

Also, please post the contact information for your guy at Tomato A&P

    thanks in advance

    http://www.tomatoanp.co.kr/front/company/company_contactus.asp

As for the prices, I don't really remember as I bought the grill last year.

It's a good thing that I didn't installed it when I got it last year :)
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
You folks haven't seen enough for aftermarket grills and tail lights for Sorento yet. There are at least four aftermarket grills I have seen. They are the Sorento-T (from lunati.com with additional baby kits), Korean domestic market (KDM) grill, BMW like grill (from merchand.com), and bullet type. There are two versions of clear Atlezza tail lights. One is clear one and the other one is black chrome.

slan - So, you will get new wheels and side side bars?
  • slan_canadaslan_canada Member Posts: 54
You are right Lok888... There are about 3-4 aftermarket grill available for the Sorento.

The Atlezza Tail lights (black Chrome) is on the way since some weeks now :) Did not received them yet.

No, it will be the same step bars and the same wheels of last year... It's because I ordered new center caps :) I need to put them on the wheels before my Alloy get installed on my truck.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
slan - Where did you order them? From eBay? I like the black chrome better than the clear. How much it was cost for the repair and how much you need to pay out of packet?
  • slan_canadaslan_canada Member Posts: 54
I bought the Atlezza lights from:

    http://www.teamsr.org/Kia/03sorento-eurolights.html

::I like the black chrome better than the clear

Me too ! :) I'm very impatient to see them on my truck :)

The total of the repair was CDN$10,500

The only thing that I paid is the difference of the old bumper guard and the new one... which was about CDN$400.

I have the same question too about maintenance.
What if I don't do all these stuff? Would my warranty be voided?
I usually only do oil change, and change spark plugs, that's about all the maintenance I do. I never followed the maintenance schedule in the manual. But with the 10 yr warranty, I wonder if I need to follow it in order for it to be active. What do you think?
Oh, some of the checkup stuff are done anyway, when I do my oil-change at Valvoline, or Jiffy Lube.
  • kiasorentoexlkiasorentoexl Member Posts: 7
Why wouldn't you follow the maintenance schedule??

If you don't and repairs come up, KIA would have every right to deny coverage because you were negligent in caring for your vehicle.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
That's what the service manager told. I just ignored it. It is a way to make profit. I didn't follow the dealer's maintenance service recommendation on my last two cars but only the manufacturer's schedule like oil change, tune-ups and my mechanic friend's suggestions. The prices at my dealer (service) are reasonable. So I have no reason to bring mine to those drive-through oil change places.

I believe the warranty is only covered the factory defects. So if you don't change your timing belt at 60K miles like the Kia (or dealer) said or driving with a dirty air filter, that's your problem. I would reply on factory schedule. It is not necessary to bring to dealer for the service. But you need to prove you have these schedule done with documents from other places or receipts from the store.

3363, don't skip regular air filter changes. I recently needed to change mine in my '01 Kia Sportage 4x4 and they showed me my old air filter after they removed it. Nasty looking! BTW-they didn't have one in stock so I went and bought one at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and took it back to them to install. $13.00 part and I was really glad to have replaced it. The old one had what looked to be hair as well as dark road dirt caked onto it. I wasn't even really late in changing it, either. Little things like air filters and fuel filters are super-important to do to extend your car's engine life, indeed.

    Hi there,
I have been in touch with KIA Canada regarding the 2005 changes. As far as KIA Canada is concerned, there are no changes in 2005. However Kia is working to reinstate the towing capacity to the 2003 model year of 5000lbs. But you never know what is coming down the pipeline in the automotive industry. Every day changes are being made without being forwarded to the dealers or costumers. I hope that helps. Happy motoring.

I have decided to go with the Luxury package because I want the Torque on Demand 4-wheel drive. You get the 6 CD-Changer in this package. Do you think it would be a huge, big-deal for the dealer to slot the CD/Cassette combo instead? I would assume it's a downgrade, but involves re-wiring. I want to keep the deal clean and don't know what sort of aggravation it will cause them.

Second, a general question. I assume that a dealer would prefer to sell a car from their lot, rather then find you one. I found a loaded EX (luxury package, ABS, cargo tray) about 75 miles from my home for $25k. Would a local dealer sell me the car at the same price? Do dealers lose money when they swap cars?

    Thanks for your help.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
iluvmysephia01 - Thanks for the advice. At 18K miles, I assume the air filter is not quite dirty yet. But my dealer suggests this to be changed. How about the fuel filter? I didn't change this on my last car (Accord) until the major tune-up. I think I just follow the manufacturer schedule.

horst1 - The 3rd row seat is available in Korea market as 2004 model. You can picture it as a Toyota Highland with 3rd seat. I don't know if Kia will make it available to the US. I am not a big fan of 3rd row seat. Or I would buy a minivan instead.

rob222 - You don't need to tell your local dealer about the deal from miles away. They may tell you to buy from them instead if they can't match the price like saying "Oh! That's too low, we can't do that. How about $XXXXX?". Just tell them what you like and how much you want to pay. Dealer don't lose money on swapping cars. They can check other dealers within the regions for car aviablity like on the ground, in freight, and to-be-built. Sometime the sales rep will drive you car back from other dealer or you pay for the flat bed if you don't want anyone drive it. I am not sure about the stereo downgrade. I assume labor will be applied plus the cost of a new AM/FM/CD/Cassette. BTW, what color you are looking for?
  • rob222rob222 Member Posts: 49
I like the beige cladding. I am tired of gray interior and like the contract of the beige exterior. I looked at a Ruby Red, but would prefer Black or Blue or possible Gold. But quite honestly colors are limited with the luxury package. The inventory to draw from is limited. Thanks for your response.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
My fully loaded '03 EX is gold beige with stone beige. I heard gold beige is very limited now. Diamond sliver was my first choice. My dealer only had one fully loaded back in 11/02 in beige. I love it and it wasn't a bad choice. Good luck in car shopping!
  • shooterdshooterd Member Posts: 24
I'd like to see confirmation of the rumors of a more powerful engine which have been tossed around on this board. That would be a nice thing to add. I'd also like to see the ABS as a standard feature across the all the models, or at least the EX level. I'm planning on buying towards the end of the year and am trying to get my picking order lined up. Reminds me of the NFL draft that just went on. LOL Trying to get the right mix of size, gas mileage, and price. Sorento is a top contender.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
There were few discussions after the release of the Kia Mojave concept pickup at Chicago Auto Show. It is a 270 hp 3.8L V6 engine. We don't know whether Mojave will make it to the production line. And I am not sure Kia is already in the position to upgrade the Sorento until the release of new Sportage to fill the gap or until its redesignment. Is it a 5 year cycle for Kia like Toyota and Honda? I think the aluminum alloy engine will produce more horsepower and deliver more gas mileage than the iron block that we have.
  • iluvmysephia1iluvmysephia1 Member Posts: 7,709
that is the best looking SUV on the market right now, IMO. Of course, I'm still partial to the looks of my '01 Sportage 4x4, but at least the competition is in amongst the same automaker's SUV's, eh?

lok888-I believe the first time my maintenance schedule called for replacement of the fuel filter was at the 30,000-mile service appointment. I have had mine replaced twice, at the 30,000 mile-mark and 60,000 mile-mark.

The new Kia Sportage for 2005 will come out in the fall of 2004.

Kia really wants to build and sell a pickup for overseas markets. The Mojave will be built, although Kia has not yet announced that formally. Watch for that to happen, though. The Mojave offers some nice features on it.

There's talk of a re-designed Rio in the not-too-distant(maybe a year or a little more from now)as well, from some Internet reading tonight.

iluvmysephina01 - Thanks. I remember I changed the fuel filters (maybe the filter pump too) on my last cars (Accord and Corolla) at around 60K. That seems too soon for Kia. Kia is very busy to bring us more new vehicles like Sorento in 2003, Amanti and Spectra in 2004, Sportage in 2005 and next Sedona in 2006.
Any idea where the 280 hp V6 engine came from? By Hyundai?
  • ivygrnsorentoivygrnsorento Member Posts: 119
All Hyundai and Kia V6 engines are derived from Mitsubishi. Though Hyundai/Kia just built a facility here in the states to begin developing and producing their own engines, a new V6 or V8 that is a Hyundai/Kia design is still some years away.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
ivygrnsorento - I remember I read something about the Mitsubishi engine too. But some argued that Kia is using a Hyundai engine on Amanti, Sedona and Sorento. It looks like it came from Mits Diamante few years ago and some of their cars and SUVs these days. BTW, I heard that Mitsubishi plans to leave the states due to the sales drop and outdated mechanical design. But they will still sale cars and SUVs here. :-(

If I am correct, the Hyundai plant in Alabama is scheduled to be complete in June 2004 and operate in 2005 for the next Sonata and Santa Fe. They expect a total of 300,000 vehicles will be built per year. Did you know Hyundai is the world's 7th largest auto marker now?
  • shooterdshooterd Member Posts: 24
Could any of you tell me, do the Kia rebates go any higher than $1,000 for current model years? Right now, I intend to purchase a vehicle by the end of the year and was wondering if Kia does any bigger rebates in the late fall/early winter? I would intend on buying a 2005 model.

Also, since it is my understanding that Hyundai is an owner of Kia now, does my owner loyalty money still apply to a Kia since I'm the happy owner of a 2001 Elantra? My wife and I have put 67,000 miles on that car without a single problem with it. I was just wondering about the owner loyalty thing since we had been told that we'd get $1000 towards a Hyundai if we purchased one. Thanks. :-)
  • rob222rob222 Member Posts: 49
w/Beige undercladding? The color is more of a gold right? Trying to decide between that and the Black w/the beige undercladding. These are identically equiped cars. I have never seen the Stone Beige Metallic and I am trying to complete a deal over the phone. Was orignally set on the black, but the gold looks pretty sharp on the Kia website. The dealer is about 40 miles away. Any feedback?
  • kiasorentoexlkiasorentoexl Member Posts: 7
I've done a side by side comparison of the black/pewter and the black/gold. I haven't seen the Stone Beige Metallic/Gold in person.

The black/pewter is much, much more appealing. There is just something a little discordant about the black/gold combo.

In the end I decided to go with the silver/pewter since black gets dirtier than just about any other color.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
shooterd - No. Although Hyundai owns Kia, the owner's loyalty program ($1000) is available for current Kia owners who purchases a new Kia, currently for Amanti, Sedona and all-new Spectra. It is not for current Kia owners who wants to buy a Hyundai. And for Hyundai, it is a cash back offer, not a loyalty program if I am correct.

robb22 - I have seen one. It is on my driveway. Seriously, I heard the gold beige is on limited production, especially the EX two-tone model.
  • alamid69alamid69 Member Posts: 59
got myself one too. gold beige i mean.
  • alamid69alamid69 Member Posts: 59
When did you guys have your first oil change? Is it true that i can do it at 5000 miles?
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
First at 3000 miles, then every 3000 miles. I used to change oil at every 6000 miles on my last car with Mobil 1. The car ran fine. I sold it when it had 100K miles on it. And I am just using regular oil on my Sorento. The manufacturer suggested 7500 miles. But every 3 months or 3000 miles is good. The oil is cheap and your engine is not.

Anyone know that I need to replace the whole wiper blades instead of the inserts on Sorento? It seems Kia don't have inserts.

And about the fuel filter change... is at 60,000 mile. And one dealer said there is no need for PCV value change.
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
You have to buy the blade assembly from Kia meaning indert and holder, thats what they call a blade. I just replaced my inserts and bought them at Auto Zone one 24 inch and one 18 inch. Just pull out teh lod ones and insert the new ones. I also bought one for the rear wiper. Rear wiper is a 14 inch but I had to buy a 15 inch because they didn't have 14inch.

Lok, I just purchased a set of head light and fog light protectors called Rok-guards. Should be here in a week and I will try to install them ASAP to see how they are. These are made of a thermoplastic material and uses 3M adhesive to mount them. Comes with 4 yr and $1000 warranty against breakage. I'll let everyone know how they work.
  • kiapartskiaparts Member Posts: 13
My sources at Kia say that they are working on an extended Sorento for 05 or 06. It will feature a third row of seating.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
hciaffa - Thanks for the info. So I can buy any 24" and 18" inserts from auto parts store and keep the Kia blades/holders, right? I saw those tape from autoanything.com for $45+ a set, just headlights. How much did you pay for yours?

kiaparts - I don't think so. Like I mentioned before, they already have the 3rd row seat option on the current model in Korean market. See www.kia.co.kr The seat layout pretty much looks like the Toyota Highlander with 3rd seat. I sat on one Highlander before. It was so uncomfortable for the 3rd seat passengers. Kia may bring this option to the states due to people's need for mid-size SUV with 3rd seat. It will be cheaper to add the seats than redesign the chassis or a major redesignment.

ivygrnsorento - How long you have to wait to see a Kia rep? Where are they come from? Regional office? I found saw rust inside the edge of the both rear passenger doors. It is on above the plastic body cladding, still inside. My dealer said it is like an orange peel. He touched it and it has no rust residue on his finger. I insisted and he scheduled a Kia rep for me.
  • kiapartskiaparts Member Posts: 13
oh but I do think so about extending the Sorento. Kia is going to make the Mojave and that is based on an extended Sorento frame. And the Mojave is set for an 06 or 07
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
The headlight protectors were $66 but it was for the entire headlight and fog lights. They are not a tape but a film cut to the exact size of the light.
The inserts can be bought at any auto parts place such as Pep Boys or Auto Zone. The drivers side is the 24 inch and its called a wide insert and the passenger side is 18 inch and it is a narrow insert. The rear is a narrow insert as well
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Then we will have to wait and see what's new on next Sorento in '06 or '07. It will be easy to build an extended version of Sorento based on the Majave frame. In the meanwhile, Kia may send us the Sorento with 3rd seat to satisfy some people's need.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
hciaffa - That's what autoanything called. It starts from $45 plus shipping. Not sure it is for headlights only. So is yours required tape or heat? I will check next time I go to these stores. But why called wide and narrow inserts?
  • shrimpyshrimpy Member Posts: 5
After reading tons on here about the Sorento, I have a question for you owners. Obviously, the milage is not quite on par with other small suv's in this class. Has anyone tried to free up the exhaust or intake to see if that would help the milage? Not talking about exhaust headers, but a high flow cat, and a modified intake system with a free flow air filter. I am SERIOUSLY considering one of these vehicles, but am just curious.

What are average city numbers coming in at? This vehicle will be my wifes TAXI, and am trying to get a clearer picture on actual milage, and can it be helped. I would like to shoot for 17.5 average mpg city for my area (no hills, flat land). Thanks.
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
The headlight and fog light protectors are specific for the Sorento and are $66 dollars. They may start at 45 for the LX with no fog lamps but for the EX its $66. I don't know what you mean that it requires tape or heat. The film is a clear adhesive backed thermoplastic material and its not supposed to yellow or deminish the light intensity. All you so is clean the lens real good and at room temperature you apply the lense cover. I have applied other brands to other family cars.
As for the wipers on wide or narrow refills, take a look at your wipers and you will notice that the driver side is a wider blade than the passenger side as well as longer.
