I see that the 05 Sorento has auto 5 speed trans. My 03 builds more RPM than I'm used to before shifting to 2nd. Does the 05 model improve that first shift?

Does anybody else wish that the ignition was on the steering column...so the keys don't jingle all the time?

"Does anybody else wish that the ignition was on the steering column...so the keys don't jingle all the time"

I've had a 2005 now for just over a week. The other day I'm driving and I hear this "click click click" sound...so I start paying more attention...It won't go away...I'm starting to get aggitated and figure something's loose on the body or the shocks, or some other thing... you know what goes through your head when you can't isolate a sound right?

My wife says, what's your problem? I say, that damn clicking noise is driving me nuts.... she says, "It's your keys!!!" The keyless entry device was rocking back and forth bouncing off the lower dash!! lol.... So yes, I sympathize with you. Nothing that a little foam with tape on one side can't fix... cut it out about 1" x 1" and stick to the area so even if keys hit, you won't hear the clicking off the dash console...

    Cheers!!

Funny you should mention the insulation tape. That's exactly what I did about a week after I purchased my Sorento. It cost very little & works great. But the next Kia I buy should have the ignition on the steering column. Thanks for sharing.

How is your 5 speed trans.? Does it have a smoother shift from 1st to 2nd?
  • newkiaguynewkiaguy Member Posts: 6
    trcar...

The tranny runs very smooth.... popped it into sports mode a couple times for a little fun. Oerall, it's been about 10 days that I've had the car and I am pleased. It's very fun to drive.

    Cheers

Thanks for the discussion...it was fun. I'm glad you're enjoying your new SUV. Cheers...& I'm sorry there's no NHL this year, but that's probably another chat room. Bye.

I haven't test drove one yet but I noticed there is a little screen or display on the odometer (right below the "D") when I sat on one ('05 model) in the showroom. Is it a display to show you what gear you are in? Also, they moved the digital clock further left to the driver's side. Is it a passenger airbag warning light next to the clock?
  • newkiaguynewkiaguy Member Posts: 6
    lok888....

Yes, the window in the dash you are referring to indicates what gear you are in. When in fully automatic, the D P N appears and when you flip to sports mode, gears 1 through 5 illuminate.

The digital clock is more towards the driver's side and next to it is the passenger air bag indicator....it tells you it's off when there is no passenger and it comes on when it senses weight on the seat.

Hi all. I have 04SorentoEX with lux pkg. Does anyone know if there is one-touch Up driver's window kit? Thanks
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
Thanks. And I saw a new '05 Ice Blue with pewter cladding (EX) waiting to be delivered to the customer. I noticed this is not a new color this year. But I think this is a cool color. Enjoy your new ride!

I don't think it has auto up feature on '04 and '05 models by reading the sales brochures. I just picked up my '03 Sorento for a new power window master switch (on driver's door panel). The front passenger's window could do auto down when pressing the master switch. I thought it was a nice feature I didn't know. But the switch was bad. The window wasn't go up.

Could someone please tell me what the "SNOW" knob actually does? We bought a 2003 EX 2WD new in December 2002 and love it. I just haven't found out exactly what this know is for. Couldn't find it in the manual and never can remember to ask when I'm at the dealership.

    Any ideas?

I just got a 2005 Sorento. Same clock problem. They said the manufacturer didn't put the memory chip in, that's why when you start the car the time is off. Mine goes next week for a replacement. Otherwise, I'm happy with the car.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I have no idea what kind of defect it has. But mine was replaced many months ago from my '03 Sorento. The clock was probably running for 15, 20 months before it failed. It kept showing 1:00 everytime I started the car and everytime reset it to the correct time. I remember my dealer replaced it while I was doing something (an oil change maybe) at the service. The part was in stock. I am thinking the problem exists since Sorento introduced. It is just a matter how long it will long.

I just wanted to say that I have been looking at the Sorento's for a while, and I have read a lot of the posts in this news group. Good feedback everyone! I just bought my 2005 EX 4WD with the luxury package yesterday, and it should be here Saturday!

    Hi Phoenixrider,

Like all the pics you have of your Sorento off road over there in the States; got a few of my own here, not on the rocks but up to the cills in mud if you're interested.

Also interested in your comments regards lifting the belly / getting better ground clearance, since the UK version is also quite low - I guess it ain't a lot different from those sold over there in the US.

I've also put a different autocooler under body protection plate on - a result of landing on the autocooler last April - cost me over £500.00 sterling to get it repaired at the garage, then a mate & I welded up the protection plate over 2 days for a little less than £50.00!!! (I have pictures if you or anyone else is interested - it consists of 6mm steel plate, a bit of scaffold pole, some steel box section, some steel angle iron, a couple of 22mm diameter bolts & a bit of the old tin as side skirts)

A business partner of mine has access to about 20 2004 EX 4X4's with cloth interiors, moon roof, and I think ABS. All these have between 2 and 10K miles with most around 5K miles. $19.500 for any one of these sounds like a good deal to me for virtually a brand new rig. Really wanted leather but cloth at this price might be worth a look. Sound like a good deal to anyone else??
  • boikoboiko Member Posts: 82
Because of the issue of relatively low mileage, can you use the lowest price/grade gas in order to lessen the impact of poor mileage with the Sorento.?

    Thanks

    Hi Pheonixrider.

I'm planning on getting the OME lift kit soon and doing the additional Daystar lift also.

Can you answer a few questions regarding your experience with the lift?

Did the OME struts come with all new upper hardware?

Was the Dayatar front spring spacer kit made for the Toyota Tacoma/Tundra (and fit your Kia perfectly)for any particular year Tacoma/Tundra?

Finally, were the studs in the Kia spring seat that need to be removed to install the Daystar kit's longer studs/bolts, screwed into the seat, welded, or pressed into the spring seat-was it hard to remove them?

Your rig looks great and thanks for any help you can give.

Actually, the owner's manual says to use 87 Octane, which is the cheapest. They say the range is 16-22 mpg.

By the way, we are getting better mileage with our '05 Sorento LX RWD than we ever did with the '02 Jeep Liberty. I plan on modifying the intake and exhaust to punch it up a bit, though.

........ Nobody is lining up for these dudes ..

Low mileage EX 4x4 Sorento's are going thru the auctions faster than Ted Kennedy is losing his memory ..... $19,500.? no earthshaker there .. with leather, slider and with the abs, they're only doing the low $17's at the auctions on a reeeeal good day ... $18,5/$18,9 would just about kill em' on the Retail side .....

I was just given an offer for a 04 LX 4x4 5-speed manual, sport package with 8k miles for $16,900. I thought that was high for this model. $15800-16000 was my high target. Any thoughts?
  • kia boundkia bound Member Posts: 8
    Hi There.

I paid $17,800 for an '04 LX, stick, Sport Package. I'm in So. California and could not get a decent deal on an '05 with a stick from a local dealer because they had to "bring one in". Got a call back from one dealer who obtained a Company car from Kia Headquarters in Irvine CA-never registered, 9715 miles. Part of the deal was a Comprehensive Extended Coverage Service Plan which basically extends the 5/60,000 bumper to bumper warranty to 7/100,000.

By the way, I've been looking in central PA.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Kinda depends on if this was a trade or he bought it at the auction .. miles are low but it's a handshaker, dealer probably paid in and around the $15ish figure for it on the trade side, add a this and that and it probably hits the table in the mid/tall $15's ..... $16,900.? sounds like he's just trying to turn and burn it ...

Thanks for the info. I think that I will wait until summer a pick up a left-over 05, or wait until I see a better deal on a used one. When new ones can be had for 20ish, 16,9 just doesn't sound like that good a deal to me. This is specially true since a manual in this car is very undesirable.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
"This is specially true since a manual in this car is very undesirable."

The question is, do YOU want a manual?

With a value of $15 and an asking price of $16,900, you ought to get this one done for $16 or a touch over... that's 80 cents per mile discount from the real-world price.

I'm all for buying new, but in this case, I'd consider making an exception.

    Dunno nuthin' bout Kia's, though...

  • dcandis1dcandis1 Member Posts: 16
I agree with you. However, the 16900 number is hard and their "final" offer. At 16000, it would be a done deal.
  • shepukshepuk Member Posts: 2
Is there a supplier anyone knows about that does a UK (ie metric based) version of the Kia Sorento workshop manual, since the only ones I have found are American ones (which will be for USA spec'd trucks, missing the crucial bit out on the diesel engine, a 2.5ltr CRDi with auto box as fitted to my Sorento) - Kia Uk won't sell to the general public for fear of it falling into untrained hands, so to speak (the dealer says it is more to do with someone wrongly servicing a truck rather than modifying a vehicle out of line with legal issues etc etc - usually bollocks - they don't want to loose the trade of servicing it).

Willing to purchase to purchase online either a downloadable maual or get posted a CD or hardcopy. Anyone help in my quest for information to do some much needed compatible 2-4" suspension lift or snorkel search.

    Shepuk, KIA Bound -

Sorry, I don't check this message board very often any more.

If you've got pics, send 'em! I like to see what others are doing with their Sorentos offroad.

    (karlhoelscher@netscape.com)

As far as the skid plates go, the factory ones were worthless. I spent alot of money to have some made up, and believe me, they were worth every penny!

For the OME stuff, I used the factory top plate and bolts. The OME stuff is just the shock. The Daystar spacer I put on also include the longer top studs and new bolts. Once disassembled, they're pertty easy to bang out the old ones with a hammer and put in the new, longer ones.

Just make sure you pay close attention to the left/right orentation on the front struts! That notch is where the upeer a-arm comes down next to the strut. I got them backwards, and after getting one on, I realized my mistake, and had to take everything apart and switch them out. And since I paid a shop to assemble the struts, as I didn't have a spring compressor, it was double the charge!

I just ordered a 1 inch strut spacer for an 04 Toyota Tacoma/Tundra. Probably no difference in the late model years.

My next thing I need to do is a body lift, either 1 or 2 inch. That again will have to be homemade. Then that should do it for a while, at least.
  • kia boundkia bound Member Posts: 8
    Thanks Phoenixrider!

OME and Daystar on their way! I also ordered a MacPherson strut spring compressor to do the job. You are absolutely right about the left/right strut thing. I have a factory service manual and it depicts the correct orientation of the struts clearly.

Does the 06 Sorento get the 06 Sedona engine?

3.8 with 240hp and 250 ft lbs. Seems a natural.
  • hambyhamby Member Posts: 17
Just bought my Sorento EX and was told that I only need to change my engine oil every 7500 miles. Is that correct? Or should it be changed every 3000 miles?
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
I change my oil and filter every 4000 miles, and I use Mobil 1 5W30 so it really doesn't hurt but many manufactures are switching over to longer intervals. Who knows why. the manual states that you can go as long as 7500 but I don't feel comfortable. If your going to use regular dino oil I would go 3months or 3000 miles. 20-24 dollars is cheaper the an engine.
  • lok888lok888 Member Posts: 1,788
I used to change oil every 6000 miles on my last car ('93 Accord) with Mobil 1 during my last 4, 5 years of ownership. I sold it two years ago at 10,500 miles with no problem with the engine or leaks. My mechanic told it is good for cold start up. However, I don't use it on my Sorento. I remember my dealer asked for $60 for Mobil 1 oil change on Sorento. You're right. Oil is cheap and engine not.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Yeah, but wasting oil is a national security issue (isn't it?). I go by my owner's manual. If you are concerned about how the oil is holding up, get an analysis done (~$10).

More on the oil wars in Engine Oil - A slippery subject Part 2.

    Steve, Host
  • hciaffahciaffa Member Posts: 454
Thats why I use a full synthetic oil, man made chemicals probably added to some natural oil but not 100% full dino fluid.
  • hambyhamby Member Posts: 17
In response to "hciaffa" why would you say oil is cheaper than a new engine when you have a 100,000 miles powertrain warrenty. If Kia says change it every 7500 than keep good records and change every 7500. If the engine goes bad it is on them.
  • mvls1mvls1 Member Posts: 32
That's great if the engine decides to fail by 100,000, but what happens if it fails at 105,000? I don't know if changing the oil more frequently adds to engine longevity or not, but I change mine at between 3500 and 4000 miles and currently have 2 trucks and one van with 200,000 or more miles on the original engines. Maybe it's just luck.
  • hambyhamby Member Posts: 17
Maybe, but seeems like a waste of money unless your other two truck's owner's manuel recommend you change it every 3500-4000 miles.

Personally, I have conducted much research on this and it appears that the oil companies and service providers want us to believe we need to change our oil more often to increase their profits.

It kinda like putting premium gas in your car when it only needs regular.
  • speedykiaspeedykia Member Posts: 20
Mobil 1 was said to be good for 25,000 miles between changes. Then the Auto and truck Mfg.s complained and Mobil changed the recommended change to what was in your Auto's manual. Still I think Mobil says their Mobil 1 is always good for 15,000 miles between changes but they recommend following the Mfg's recommendation.
  • phoenixriderphoenixrider Member Posts: 34
I use Mobil 1 in my Sorento, and change it roughly every 5k miles. The 1 thing that really gets me on the Sorento engine is the size of the oil filter - my motorcyle uses a bigger filter!

Also, don't forget to change the diff oil. I switched out both front and rear axles to Mobil 1 synth gear oil. I also recently changed the tranny fluid, and the transfer case oil.

I don't know about your vehicles, but I had gear oil in my transfer case, and the manual says to use Detxron III (tranny fluid) Called the dealer - they said replace with what was in there. There seems to be a MAJOR problem with the owners manual if it is calling for tranny fluid in something that requires gear oil
  • iluvmysephia1iluvmysephia1 Member Posts: 7,709
and tranny fluids, transfer case, etc., you only need to do those at 30,000 miles, than at 60,000 miles, 90,000 miles, etc. Engine oil is an exception, but I believe Kia is saying change out your motor oil every 7,500 miles. I change mine every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

2021 Kia Soul LX 6-speed stick

  • kia boundkia bound Member Posts: 8
I have also switched out all the fluids to Synthetic: Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil in the differentials, Redline MT-90 GL-4 Manual Transmission Oil in the gearbox (don't use GL-5 differential oil in the manual transmission), Mobil 1 Synthetic Dexron III (also suitable where Dexron IIE is specified-like the Power Steering System)in the transfer case, and Castrol Full Synthetic 10W-40 in the engine, changed every 3000 miles.

Phoenixrider, did you buy your Sorento new? If so someone may have goofed up on the factory fill. If not, some one put the wrong oil in. I would put the ATF in the transfer case. For the longest time New Process/New Venture has used ATF in most of their chain driven transfer cases (NP208, NV231, NV241, NV271). The Borg Warner transfer case in the Kia is built just like a New Venture transfer case. It, like a New Venture, has an oil pump that provides for lubrication of the unit. This pump pulls oil through a filter. That filter is not designed to pass thick gear oil. You could be oil starving your transfer case! Because the Kia low range is provided by a planetary gearset, the kind of gearing in an automatic transmission which has relatively light gear tooth loading, and the power transfer to the front driveshaft is by chain, which actually likes thin oil, thick gear oil is not required. The ATF will flow well when cold and is robust enough to lubicate this type of transfer case well when hot.

Now that the new Toyota FJ Cruiser is coming out, are you all rushing to trade in your Kia?
  • speedykiaspeedykia Member Posts: 20
I know it's a small item but I feel the two (2) worthless covers one is thin steel the other is non-steel under the engine are really poor Engineering on Kia's part. They really give no real protection and cause one to have to remove them each time the oil&filter is changed.
  • beyond_helpbeyond_help Member Posts: 110
you got that right ! i just changed my oil and filter today and was surprised that one was plastic and the other was thin sheet metal....i guess better than nothing ?
well at least when the last bolt came out of each they did not fall on my hand a and crush a finger or two, LOL !
