Try driving on the freeway for a while at a constant 55mph. You should do better than 18mpg doing that. I have gotten 26+mpg over a 600 mile trip once where I had to drive 50mph because of bad weather. The fact is that most people do not drive at all like the tests done to get the epa estimates.

Keep in mind that MPG depends on elevation of area where you live as well as type of fuel you use. I believe the highway MPG shown on stickers of most new cars assumes MPG when driven using recommended fuel (premium in most cases) at sea level at 55MPH. I live in Utah and noticed many times how MPG improved dramatically during my trips to CA on all previous and current vehicles (including Murano). Not only MPG improves at lower elevation, but I can even feel the difference in engine’s power (response from engine). Here at elevation approx. 4,300 Ft I get 18-18.5 MPG with 80% highway/ 20% city driving and 20-21MPG on highway only. Sometimes I get 14-16MPG when condition changes to 20% highway/ 80% city. But I don't complaint simply because I am sure there will be no SUV around that will get better MPG with same driving condition. I am sure because I owned different SUV’s in the past. And I know people getting 8-12MPG with their Envoy's, Tahoe's, Sequoia’s, etc. For those who complain on poor MPG of Murano I would suggest renting Explorer, Highlander or Endeavor. I bet you will never get better MPG on those SUV's with same driving condition, and if you do, take your Murano to a dealer - there is something definitely wrong with it.

I have 17K on my Murano. Averaging in the city about 17-18 (mixed driving). Highway is a consistant 22-23 MPG. The key with this vehicle is to keep the RPM's below 2K as much as possible. I use 89 Octane consistantly. I've tried 93 octane and the higher octane showed no significant improvements in mileage. Great car so far. I just had the alternator replaced under recall. Never had a problem with it to begin with.

This past weekend I took a long drive from San Diego to LA with no one on the freeway ( really early in the morning ) and I managed to get 22.3 MPG average for the 200 mile round trip. It sure beats my 13 MPG with city driving. I don't care really. If I wanted good gas mileage I would have bought the Toyota Egg, I mean Prius. All in all I love my Murano. It is nice to look at, fun to drive and very comfortable for my pregnant wife to relax in on long drives. I could not have asked for a better vehicle. By the way, I hate the Lexus RX and the acura MDX. They aren't as nice looking as the MO.

It has been almost a year now and I have 22,000 miles on my 2004 SL AWD MO. I average around 19-20 around town, and between 22-26 on a trip IF I keep the RPM's below 2k. I have been using 93 octane, however that may change with the high prices.
I did use regular, 87 octane, on a trip to Florida this August. I averaged 80-85 mph and was fully load with 3 sets diving equipment, 6 forty pound tanks, 100 lbs of lead weights, 3 suit cases, a cooler load with ice, lunch meat and soda, and 3 adults. I averaged 20mpg. I believe if I had kept the speed down to 60-65 I would have gotten 23 or 24 mpg or better. I was driving from western PA through the WVA mountains to Florida, and had the air on full blast the whole time.

The best fuel mileage I ever got was a short trip to my cousin's home 100 miles away. I kept the speed around 55-60 and got 27.8 mpg. With two people in the car and no luggage.

I did replace the air filter with a K&N but didn't notice much difference. I have noticed that using regular gas 87 oct. around town, the mileage drops to around 15 -17 mpg. Of course we have some hills here in western Pa.

Over all I love the car! It is comfortable, handles like a sports car, and still gets those looks. Most people ask"what is it" They also can't believe that it has all that room in the back. My friends who own Ford Explorer's can't get over the leg room in the rear seat.

I have waxed the car using Flitz car wax and preservative. It goes on and comes off easy and the shine lasts a good long while. Most dirt washes off with a hose, and the shine is outstanding. You can order the wax on line at Flitz's web site.

My tires are starting to wear and with all the commuting I do I'll have to replace them soon. Does anyone have any Idea on brand and type of tires? Cost? I used the standard eagle radials that came with the car last winter and did not have one bit of trouble in the snow. AND we do get some heavy snow here in western Pa. Any thoughts Ideas??? What worked for you and prices????

    Hi,

I just got my MO. AWD S model. Some of the perks I would have liked to have I was unable to afford, oh well - none the less I am still happy with the S model thuse far.

I have not put 500 miles on my MO yet but I'm averaging about 19mpg in the city. When I first drove it off the lot I was in shock that the mpg was down around 11.

I have taken it on (3) 50 mile each way road trips but forgot to chech the mpg on each trip.

All in all - I really like this caruck - (car + truck)

Can someone with Sat Radio in their Murano tell me if the name of the station and the description of program that is on show up on the Nav system ? Thanks
  • andytommoandytommo Member Posts: 33
Yes it does. You have to change an option though. Hit the round twiddly knob on the right (the one to change bass/treble/fade etc). Upon the first push, wait a few seconds (or you can turn the knob immediately after pushing to get the info quicker) and it will give you the artist that is playing. Push again and turn and it will give you the song title. Pushing again takes you to the regular bass/treble etc but keep pushing until 'Display' flashes up. When it does, turn the knob either way and scroll through your options. You can set the default display to either the channel number (completely useless if you ask me) the channel name (i have it set to this) or something else which I can't remember off hand and I'm too lazy to go out and see!

Im from England, and BBC Radio 1 just started broadcasting a couple of weeks ago with a 5hr delay on Sirius. I can't get enough of it! lol. It does make it a tad tricky to take part in the phone in competitions and what not, but hey, tis better than nothing!

Also, someone else asked before how much petrol (gas) is going for at the moment in England - a recent call home got an aggravated mother on the end of the line who had been queuing up for ages (threats of blockades of refineries unless govt. reduces fuel tax) and when she finally filled up paid 97pence per litre. 97pence is about $1.75.

However, now it gets tricky (a lot of people don't realise this bit when doing quick conversions). A UK gallon is larger than a US gallon. There are 4.55 litres in one UK gallon, but 3.784 litres in a US gallon. So, it costs $1.75 x 3.784 = $6.62 to fill up with one US gallon in the UK.....With me still?! Now onto fuel efficiency. Because a gallon is 20% larger in the UK, it's not fair to do straight mpg comparisons (which a lot of people do), generally when pointing out that a Hummer only gets around 10mpg. Ok, this is a poor comparison cos even when converting it to UK mpg, it would still only be 12 (20% increase), which is still rubbish!

However, even though gas is twice as expensive in the UK, and we complain about it no end, and tabloidy newspapers make incorrect comparisons, UK cars still get much better fuel consumption, even taking into account the difference in gallon size. When I was last over i rented an Altima sized vehicle, which was diesel, and with mostly highway driving, I averaged 48mpg! It wasnt slow, and it wasnt smelly. Forget hybrids, they still suck on highways, lets get more diesels over here.

You also dont need to drive as far to get anywhere in the UK, so even though gas is twice as expensive, cars are almost twice as economical, and you dont have to drive as far to get anywhere, so if you have a reasonable size car, it actually works out at roughly the same price to drive over there. Kinda sorta maybe. Not cheaper to drive a Murano over there tho!!

I completely disagree with you. Although the price is a little high the navigation system is great. I have tried out many brands and this one ranks right up there especially with the birds eye view mode. Not sure if you are a salesman or something but please don't use this forum to hock products that you sell. This is to discuss the car and not sell things. The link you put in shows the pictures of the nav and it looks awful, pretty low buck in my opinion. For all of you out there if you want the nav then get the Murano built in nav. It works great , its easy to use and has a lot of features.

    Hi,

Murano is just on the market in 2005 in the Netherlands. Only one model though(the most luxurious I believe with AWD, leather, etc.). Retail price is 60.000 Euro which is almost 75.000 US. A bit steep for me and I am looking for second hand from the US. I can only find dealer offers though (even ebay is all dealers), and I would be interested in private sales since these are a lot better value in the Netherlands at least (maybe since the VAT is lower in the US there is also less difference in second hand prices between dealers and private sales?). Does anybody have a recommendation on were too look for the best (private) offers?

2005 SL AWD MURANO. 7,500 miles. Driving along, turned a corner, suddenly accelerator pressure did not do anything. "SLIP" LIGHT AND "CHECK ENGINE SOON" came on. Coasted 300 yards and Pulled over. Got out book. It said to turn off ignition, wait, and re-start. Bingo...perfect, SLIP light gone, but Check Engine remains. Call dealer service. "You need a new alternator"...four hours" Called another service center "We have never seen that before".
Driving it now three days...perfect. Waiting for light to go off. Realize alternators have been recalled, but I have not received a notification. Dead alternators do not get well in 45 seconds.
Seems like computer crash...like all the gizmos...DISH TV, the Phones...you turn them off, they reset and they are fine. One dealer said, "I'd have that in yesterday if my wife were driving it." (He must have a cute wife...)
Anybody heard of this? Thanks...Signed John B in California...letting his wife drive it....
  • rjardinerjardine Member Posts: 18
If the alternator had failed the 'battery/charge' light and the 'brake' light would have lit up together. So the first service center you called does not know what they are talking about.

Noting you have a 2005 AWD, if the last 6 digits of your VIN # are 404497 or greater you are not subject to recall.

Regardless, since you are obviously under warranty presume you will take to the dealer to have the fault codes read and repairs taken care of as appropriate.
  • platinumbird1platinumbird1 Member Posts: 25
The last 6 digits of the VIN # of my murano is 326835 and I called nissan recall center and they told me that my murano are not subject to recall. Hmmm...
  • rjardinerjardine Member Posts: 18
If yours is a 2WD, as opposed to an AWD, then Nissan is correct. Here are the VIN #s for 2005 models that are subject to the recall:

    2005 MY - 2WD: JN8AZ08T*5W300104-302827
    2005 MY - AWD: JN8AZ08W*5W400011-404496

Thank you who have chipped in on sudden power loss...idle only. Corrected by turning off ignition. Will check VIN when wife returns with vehicle...running great six days later with check engine light still on...another respondant on "fixes" said same thing was "throttle position sensor"...well, I am going to keep driving until it happens again...and if it does, I am on warranty. From the posts so far on lots of things, it looks like dealers all say something different, slap in new transmissions, alternators, sensors and take three weeks because of back orders...and Nissan USA gets the bill on warranty. I would rather drive with the dumb light on, everything working fine, than have some idiot put new parts in which probably have no bearing on the problem....which may not even be a problem. Will stay in touch. If you see an Obit from California from a lady dying in a no power Murano, you saw it first here. John Baldwin

Don't wait for a notification to reach you. Go to your nearest Nissan and have your alternator changed. Your battery may also die on you. I was driving 65 MPH when my car just died in the middle of the highway... no power steering... no brakes. You wouldn't like to have to call for a flatbed which is more expensive since you cannot be towed by a tow truck!!!

    Hello,

I just bought an S model that comes with the standard 4-speaker CD audio system. I'm interested in upgrading the speakers at a minimum. The computer at Best Buy claims that the "front" speaker size is 6.5 inches, and the "back" speakers are 6x9 inches. Well, the only "rear" speakers are the ones in the back doors, and those appear to be identical to the ones in the front doors. Has anyone upgraded the audio system and/or know what size the speakers actually are? There are two additional speaker grills on the top of the dashboard, but those are apparently used only for the upgraded 6-speaker Bose system.
  • murano_ownermurano_owner Member Posts: 64
    They are all 6.5" speakers.
    http://www.nissannews.com/nissan/technology/2004_Murano_Bose_Highlights.pdf

The link shows you the system that you have installed.
  • vifferviffer Member Posts: 21
OK, now for the facts... The OPTIONAL Bose system(not available on the S) has 6.25 round speakers in the four doors. The '05 S comes only with 6X9's in the FRONT and 6.25 round speakers in the REAR.

I replaced them with Infinity's and there is a noticeable improvement in sound as the stock system is 160 watts V. the optional Bose 225(not available on the S). I have been told but not verified there is wiring in the front grills for tweeters.
  • vifferviffer Member Posts: 21
    I mean 6.5 inch speakers not 6.25

Hi there. Where did you get the recall information about the last 6 digits of the VIN# being 404496 for the 2005 AWD Murano? I just checked the Nissan website and they list a 5 digit number for the 2005 AWD Murano recall of 40449. I'm confused. My last 6 digits are 439951 and I'm trying to figure out if I AM part of the recall or not. I've only had my new car for 3 weeks and reading all this is really bumming me out :-(

Thanks in advance for the help.

Plugged into dealer computer: Throttle position sensor faulty (as someone in "fixes" had predicted). Replaced and out of there (on warranty) in l 1/2 hours.
Service engine light off now. Foreman at Central Valley Nissan in Modesto, CA said "We have had four or five exactly the same problem...out of several thousand vehicles sold in three years. Our experience with the transmission is excellent...it is not the problem."
For the vibration/balancing folks: the weights are numerous because of the pressure sensing system which adds weight to the valvestem area. Across from it will be the add-on place, and for my Murano, they had to "stack" the stick on weights to get them accurate...not spread out along in a line. (The rims do not accept the pound-on traditional weights...Wal-Marts are not up to it.).
Thanks to the two guys who said "Have them look at the Throttle Position Sensor". (No cable or direct link in new cars...the accelerator has a sensor, and electric wires to another sensor/injector in the carburetor. Cables froze and broke..but the new systems also fail.) Give me my 51 Chevy brand new out of the showroom...no check engine lights and you could BBQ in aluminum foil on the manifold while you drove across town. John in CA

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I got the VIN# info off another related forum, but Edmunds' forum rules prevent me posting the web address. I suspect a mistake (!!!) on the Nissan web site since a VIN# always has 6 digits at the end, so looks like they missed off the last "6".

Suggest you check out the NHTSA.com site, or better yet check with your dealer, or even better - call Nissan HO.

My e-mail is posted so if you drop me a note I can give you more info.

I just bought a 2004 and was wondering if anybody is having problems with their stereo? (stations not 100% clear)
I have no static from 2 other vehicles I own but the Murano has jus a touch of static...enough to be annoying.....is anybody else experiencing this...I called the service dept. and they said it's probably due to the satellites in my area......
You could tell he was brushing me off....no other vehicle I own has this problem.

I have a 2004 Murano and experienced the same radio issue. The FM band was not clear. The dealer said there was TSB on this and replaced the radio the same day for me. I had them add the Sirius Receiver while they had it all open. The Sirius Radio is incredible! I highly recommend it. Tell your dealer to check your TSB's and they will find it.

The brake & accelerator adjuster were very noisey & have now quit on my 2003 Murano. Now the driver seat fore aft adjuster has had a plastic gear break on the RH side locking the seat in one position. Nissan won't sell the part to fix it & they want $600 for the entire assembly plus installation for a $5 gear. Anyone else had problems with these components

    Hi,
I am looking at getting a used Murano 04 with leather and sunroof with 20K mileage. It's a private party asking price is $28000.
What do you think in your view should this vehicle go for...

    Thanks!

as i posted a while back, i still have a seat creaking and fore aft movement in the driver's seat. at the present time, they still say its not broken. it is not surprising that the seat fianlly just gave out. i suspect that over time, there will be many murano driver's seats which will break and need an expesive repair. how will all of us handle that????
  • mcunninghammcunningham Member Posts: 5
I'm having a similar problem with my 04 Murano. The driver seat is rocking and there is overall movement. I was at the dealer yesterday for an oil change and mentioned this and they said there is a TSB for the seat and they ordered the parts for it. I'm going back next Thursday for the repair. Here is the link to the TSB

I have a 2005 Murano SL AWD that I took delivery of in July. I live in Central NY state and want All-Weather Floor mats for the front and rear. When I had my first oil change, my dealer said that they carry the mats but they only come in dark gray - which essentially looks like black. I have a tan interior and am wondering if anyone has found custom mats in another color than black ? Also, if you purchased from an aftermarket supplier - how wa the fit, color, quality, etc.
    Thank You.

I've got a 2005 Murano with tan leather interior. I bought my mats from Auto Anything and they look great. Very pricey, but sturdy and look as though they were made for the vehicle.

"Though its ratings for overall exterior styling are not high, the Nissan Murano is perceived as a particularly trendsetting crossover SUV and is often associated with being a younger person's vehicle. It also scores well among women, who are likely to view it as a vehicle that can be "shown off," and is perceived to be high tech, modern and flashy."

I bought my Murano a couple of months ago and chose not to get Sirius radio at the time of purchase, only now my wife is harping on me to get it because she is a huge Howard Stern fan.

Is it pretty difficult to get it added after you've already driven off the lot? Anyone have any ideas on what the cost might be?

    Let me know please. Thanks.
  • mcunninghammcunningham Member Posts: 5
I had the Sirius installed by the dealer a few months after I bought the Murano. As I recall with parts and labor I spent about $600....The dealer did an excellent job and the antenna looks great on the back. I don't listen to regular radio anymore. Well worth it!

It seems most Muranos I see on lots are SLs and not SEs. The reason given by dealers is that SEs have a harsh ride and SLs are preferred.

I appreciate good handling in a car and I like the 05 and 06 SE wheels better. Those who have sampled SEs, is the ride unduly harsh?
