Mike, it was the CRV. They do sell a 10-seat version in SE Asia.

Any Tour de France watchers notice the USPS team car?
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Well of course. Subaru is a sponsor of the team. Speaking of which, what do ya'll think about Lance being back in the yellow jersey? Quite the impressive performance the Posties put on today. And what could be better than watching the Tour on OLN and getting to see lots of Subaru ads. The TV coverage this year is phenomenal. Wasn't it just last year that all they carried was a daily 1/2-hour highlight show and an hour one on weekends? In comparison, this year's coverage is practically round-the-clock. I guess when you've got a rider (Lance) trying to make history (6 wins) things like that happen ;-)

    G'day

The three across the front seat idea was reinvented by Fiat with their Multipla, which did not make it out of Europe. Interesting idea and execution was very well received in Britain

    Wierd looking but practical

which is too bad, I liked the wierdness of it. Still, no one quibbled that it was a fantastic use of space; it was the mug that held up sales.

Excursion is cancelled due to lack of sales, BTW.

6 speed manual in that price class is impressive.

Frank: no offense taken. And while I'm not at all a typical car buyer, I think my family's needs are typical. 2 kids and a dog sounds pretty common to me.

People don't usually account for car pools, stuff like that. We often exchange rides with other pre-school parents. On a field trip I took 3 kids, squeezed in.

And show me a 5 seater that has a comfortable middle seat, hump and all. The nanny has to squeeze in that spot for 3 hours at a time for us to go to the beach - NOT fun.

The last car I sat in that had a flat floor with no hump and a comfy middle rear seat was...drum roll please...the Scion xB. Really.

All Subies have the hump. And almost all cars have a rock hard middle seat. Even most trucks, like the Armada (remember Bob?). Expedition was good, and the Sienna with seating for 8 (3 in the middle, offset) is ideal for us, really.

Just sampled both of these yesterday, put up a full review in the Town Hall Test Drive Team thread.

It's an oddball pairing, but we got the $25 card from Subaru and it was the only model I had not tried yet.

Lexus gave us 60 free song down loads, something like that, to try the IS.

It's really funny because the Outback sedan makes for a much better Lexus than the IS does. By far. More roomy, comfortable, quiet, better NVH control, just more substance all around.

Hilarious, though, was the salesman, who owns an Outback Limited! He agreed straight up that the Subaru was a better family car, and a much better value.

I saw a few of those when I was in Italy a couple years back. I even had a chance to ride in a Multipla taxicab.

As strange as it looks on the outside, the ride inside was quite nice. Roomy and airy -- quite different from your standard cab!

    They're sold in Brazil, too.

What's REALLY strange is that bank executives buy them. Space = luxury in Brazil. You have to be wealthy to afford to fuel it up.

I think they are bizarre. The Citroen Xsara Picasso is perhaps even uglier, it looks like an egg. My brother bought one!

Suburban has a nice middle second row seat - very comfy with no hump. Of course there's still another 6' of vehicle behind it.
To beat a dead horse, I found the WRX middle seat to be the flattest relative to the other Subie products with the leather Outback the worst. Where are the ergo engineer/marketers on that one?

Growing up, we used to drive in a friend's 60's vintage VW fastback. Middle rear was affectionately referred to as "the abortion seat". Hit a pothole at speed, and it wasn't hard to figure out how we named it. To touch another theme - on rare occasions, it actually qualified as an 8 passenger vehicle. ;-)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Oh, the Forester's seat is pretty flat, at least on my '98, it's just a tight squeeze laterally and the hump robs foot room.

Fine for short distances, but what about a 3 hour road trip?

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this desert track
    Aboard the new subarus.

The mate ( bob ) was a mighty driving man,
The skipper ( juice ) grunts in turn #1.
All in attendence drove the track that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The tires were getting worn down,
The Legacy GT was getting tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless drivers
The wall would be hit, the wall would be hit.

The Legacy GT came to halt on the shore of this unplanned pit stop
    With Bob
    The Juice too,
    The drovemall and his wife,
    The lady with class
    The Paisan and Patti,
    Here on Juices Forum.

So this is the tale of the Subaru crowd,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
    It's an uphill climb.

The first mate ( bob ) and the Skipper ( juice )too,
    Will do their very best,
    To make the others comfortable,
    In the subaru threads.

No phone, no GPS but plenty of motor cars,
    With Subaru going upscale luxury,
    Unlike Robinson Crusoe,
As huge of a sunroof as can be.

So join us here each week ( in the subaru chat )my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
    From the subaru castways,
    Here on "Juice's Isle."

The name Edix, coined from the words edit and six, is intended to suggest a six-seater minivan that allows passengers to "edit" the seating arrangements to suit their needs.

Actually, Bob, the name Edix, technically, means "stupid name for a car".

OK, question now, I got a speeding ticket in a small town in Deleware, on the way to the beach. It was one of those roads where the limit is 55, then quickly drops to 25, and I didn't slow down early enough.

He clocked me at 42, but wrote a ticket for 34 in a 25. The fine isn't the issue, my question is, will points assessed in Deleware transfer over to Maryland?

We think our insurance went up once when my wife got a ticket there. If so, I'll go to court hoping to pay a fine but get no points.

    Suggestions?

will points assessed in Deleware transfer over to Maryland?

Yes more than likely they will. Back in the day, you could get any number of speeding tickets so long as you were never ticketed in the state that issued you your driver's license. Back then the states weren't computerized and didn't have an easy way to share info so tickets in another state didn't count as points on your license nor increase your insurance. Unfortunately that is no longer the case and for probably the past ten years states have shared traffic violation info.

At least the cop was nice enough to give you a break and only cite you for 9 over. It's possible that less than 10 over doesn't result in any points but just a fine. You can probably call the Clerk of Court or whomever is listed on the ticket and find out (might save you a trip).

    Haven't seen it posted yet:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At least 27 Honda CR-V sport-utility vehicles from the 2003 and 2004 model years burst into flames shortly after getting their first oil changes, The Washington Post reported on Friday,
No injuries were reported, but many of the vehicles were destroyed, usually with 10,000 miles or fewer on their odometers...

It depends on the agreement between the two states. I would guess "yes" only because they're next to each other. I know there are still some states that do not transfer the points. ;-)

Wait a few weeks and contact Motor Vehicles. Tell them that you just want to verify your driving record.

Ed: it's all over the media. Washington Post's #1 e-mailed story. CNN. Yahoo.

One person in the CR-V thread sued Honda and won double the damages for her BBQ'd CR-V, but Honda is appealing. It's been a hot topic in that thread for a long time now.

I think in MD they only assess points after you pay the fine, so I don't want to pay and then lose the opportunity to go to court.

something totally new is unveiled with the new '05 Honda Odyssey, I will owe juice a lunch.

From what I've seen to date, it looks like Honda has taken the same safe conservative approach it took with the CRV when Honda re-did that model. I have absolutely no doubt it will still be the best vehicle in this segment, but so far nothing really unique or really different has been shown.

From what I can see the vehicle appears to be larger than the old model, and I think most minivan buyers will see this as a plus. I would think (hope!) it will have a split 3rd-row seat, and some sort of folding solution to the middle-row seats. No word on AWD or hybrid power, although I'm sure we'll see that at some point, maybe in a year or two.

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Yikes! I thought the present model was pretty big. I'm not a fan of minivans but I thought the previous generation Odyssey was a good maneuverable size.

in the eyes of many (most!) minivan owners. I bet Chrysler & Dodge sells 10x as many LWB minivans as they do SWB models.

While browsing through the various country sites for Subaru around the world, I found this interesting technical note about the new auto tranny on the Subaru Cyprus site:

    "Electronically-controlled 4-speed Automatic Transmission (E-4AT)
Now features direct-control AT to smooth gearshift response. Slip Lock-up Control reduces slip loss in the torque converter, to help fuel economy and minimise engine vibration, while Automatic Neutral Control puts you into a “virtual” neutral while you’re stopped in D range with brakes on. Effectively disengaging drive until you move off, it improves fuel consumption even further.
(The Direct-control AT is used for 2.0 XT model only.)"

I can find nothing on the Subaru USA site or on the various Subaru forums here regarding the potentially useful feature "Automatic Neutral Control" when speaking of the redesigned tranny for 2005. As I am awaiting my new 2005 Forester XS, which should be in this week, I am hoping that the American version also has this feature as it seems that it could save some gas when in traffic.

Could someone in the know enlighten me about this feature?

Also, I can find no explanation of just how the economy and power modes of the tranny are controlled. Is it a manual selection or what? In fact, on the site of one of the other countries, I seem to remember seeing it speak of three modes!
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
All Subaru automatics are now electronically controlled.

    4EAT = 4 speed electronic automatic transmission

    5EAT = 5 speed electronic automatic transmission

    Bob
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Sure, valid point(s). But wasn't it the Ford Excursion that was 'bigger' but actually not - the Suburban had more useful interior space?

    -Brian
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Some of these vehicles are getting so big they ought to require CDLs! Exon Valdez anyone? ;-)

    -Frank
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I just wish they wouldn't say MINI-van anymore then. What we bought is/was a mini-van. The Ody, the new Sienna, the larger GC, these are becoming full-size vans, sometimes heavier than them.

I know I might be in the minority, but we didn't want a tank.

    -Brian
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Full-size vans are considerably heavier, and far less efficient than the largest minivan. I will agree the word "minivan" is a misnomer, but it looks like it's here to stay. Maybe "midivan?"
