Anything behind the B pillar is legal in NY.
20% on the front 2 side windows isn't but I only got a few tickets over the years for it. The 20% against the pearl white really does look great. Only thing left really is for me to replace the fog bulbs with yellow ones and then the car will be about 90% done. May get a Cobb AP for it to cut down on the rich burn condition that I get cause it dumps fuel when you are over 4k rpms. Makes the exhaust pipes all black. I'm all gadgeted up too with my Garmin 670 and Escort 9500i as well. The 9500i with GPS is great you can lockout a signal and it will remember it the next time you go through the area, it does a combo GPS location + Radar Frequency lockout, so if a cop decides to sit right where the other signal is you still get the cop one but not the one you locked out.

I believe this is the first time the "twin-scroll turbo" has been used in the 2.5 engine. The 2.0 turbos have had it for some time.
Bob
Bob, is your source certain that the Forester 09 is NOT coming in MT. That's going to be another big mistake from Subaru
Yes.
Subaru's Detroit show announcement on the Forester is Sunday (tomorrow!) at 2:55 - 3:20. So we'll "officially" get all the nasty facts then.
Bob
I also have word that the 2010 Legacy that will have the new platform will be available with the 6MT and 3.6L NA motor the 3.6L Turbo is still being debated.
-mike
Not that using a key is so hard, but it is another nice luxury.
I just noticed that the button is the exact same button in Toyotas and Lexuses- so must be a hand me down from Toyota.
Mike- that seems cheap for HIDs- my friend just bought them for his LGT- I'll see how they look. How does the GPS link up with the radar detector?
tom
This is not an engineering advancement, but rather added complexity for marketing sake. Having said that, Walter Mitty would no doubt love it.
Bob
One downside of having keyless entry and start is that you then expect other cars to have it as well. I often walk up to our MPV and expect the doors to unlock when I approach or that I don't need to use a key to start the van.
-Brian
Really? On the Nissans you only need have the fob in the vicinity of the car to start it or open the doors. I would think the Subaru system is the same. Also it's not really any more complex of a system as the chipped key found in most cars today does the same thing, the only "extra" you would have would be the wire going to that push-button. We've installed similar systems on race cars where we don't need a key anymore.
For instance if your ignition is broken into and the key cylinder is malled you basically tape your key to the steering column which allows the chip to unlock the system and a screw driver to turn the broken cylinder to start the car.
It'll eventually make it over similar to many other features found in cars today.
-mike
The Escort 9500i actually has a GPS chip inside it. It's really neat, I plan to do a full writeup for my blog on edmunds about it shortly!
On the HIDs, if your buddy wants help to install em, let me know and I can give him a quick writeup on what I did (if he's using the Xentec kit I got off Amazon).
I may have to get a set for my fogs and highbeams too.
-mike
I'll ask him what kit he bought- thanks for the offer of help!
tom
Not having to fumble for a key at all has an obvious benefit. Ask any lady searching for her keys in her purse.
Power sliding doors on minivans are a gift from the heavens. Awesome, and very useful any time we drive home late at night and the kids fall asleep. Imagine carrying an 80 lbs child in your arms and still having to fumble to close a heavy door.
I have to admit that a lot of times I miss having the MT. Except when I'm sitting at a crawl on the road; then I'm content to leave it in "D" and take it easy.
Mark
STI should be that drivetrain. Just keep the spec.B name if it's not the same engine.
That would work for me. I prefer having something a bit more "camouflaged" for my car- catch less attention that way. Until it's needed that is
Mark
I personally like the larger displacement engine we have here.
Oh yeah, Bob, the keyless thing. It really seems kina "foo-foo" at first and I agree it's not like turning the key is such a difficult thing, but it's nice not having to fumble around in my pocket for the keys every time.
Try it, I'm sure you'll like it!
tom
That would help STI keep its identity.
I wouldn't be suprised to see the Spec B in 2009 get the 08 STi drivetrain (engine and trans and diffys and VDC)
-mike
I can't tell you how many times I've had my arms full of groceries or other stuff, trying to keep my kid close to me in the parking lot (in the pouring rain, naturally) while I'm trying to dig through my various pockets for the keyfob. To make it worse, we've got 2 identical keyfobs for our 2 Subies, so I can't even tell by feel if I have the right fob. I'd like the push-button start and would be willing to pay a few hundred extra for it.
pricing will be $38k base and almost $45k with all the goodies
Yes, a newer design engine that they are being a bit shady about releasing details about at this time. But it is a boosted 4 as far as I can tell, although, a boosted h6 is not out of the question, as the dimensions of this car are bigger than current legacys, 3.5" longer and 1.75" wider.
IF true, I see the H6 Turbo coming in shortly after the 4 and 6 cyl. models. IMO, the think a 4 turbo would be too much work for a heavier/larger vehicle. Yes, we see it in the RDX but it's not as performance oriented as the Leg will be. Whatever they do, I hope Subaru takes advantage of their length increase by giving us more interior volume (in the right places).
-mike
2.5L H4 Direct Injection with about 180-190hp
3.6L H6 NA putting out about 300-305hp
3.6t H6 Turbo putting out about 375-390hp (if they decide to bring it)

Unfortunately, I won't be able to wait another 1+ yrs

There was an article on nikkan.co.jp that seems to have disappeared from the website, but here is my summary:
• FHI - To Introduce Its Next-Gen Direct Injection Engine As Early as 2009
In as early as 2009, FHI plans to introduce its direct injection gasoline engine in the FMC Legacy.
• One merit of direct injection engines is fuel consumption efficiency.
• The issues being worked out now are injector costs and NOX counter measures related to lean burn.
• FHI's goal is to improve fuel efficiency and increase power output simultaneously and become the flagship for environmental engineering.
• On the topic of stricter fuel consumption regulations in Japan, America, and Europe, one FHI executive stated: "It's imperative that we get the direct injection engine out to market."
• FHI will use Piexometric devices in the next-gen engine to precisely manage the injectors and is also reviewing the usage of an EGR cooler.

Speaking of which you coming to SOA to check out the 09 Forester with us on Feb 1? They are probably gonna come for a ride with it through the Pine Barrens too, so we'll see how well it handles some light offroading.

I'm crazy busy right now without that help we're accustomed to.
-mike
Take your time but good luck. Pretty soon you'll have a couple of Bambinos running around and less time for hobbies (like Subies).
Up in Boston training this week, met up with some NESIC folks, always interesting.

This is so exquisitely off topic but I feel I should share it with you. An unfolding incident in the fairly wild hills near here...
Man with dog crashes while paragliding
A paraglider has spent four hours stuck in a tree at Warburton, east of Melbourne.
The man, with his dog strapped to him, crashed into the tree about 5:00pm AEDT today.
He called for help on 000 and a climbing team has been making its way towards him, but is having to deal with thick bush.
The countryside is very wild with dense, very tall (200ft plus) eucalypts on steep sided hills. He is apparently sitting 150ft up one of them and I bet the dog has lost its passion for flying!
Cheers
Graham
I can only imagine the terrain; it must be beautiful.
Any updates, graham?
The Emergency services got him down after about five hours. He was intelligent enough to stay where he was perched and to have both a mobile phone and UHF Radio so he could chat to the Police Helicopter that located him and guide them in so they could find him in the first place. Emergency Services had to climb up 150 feet from the ground, get a harness on him and then lower him to the ground. He sounded to be okay although spending a night in hospital.
The dog turned out to be a chihuahua. We had debated the most suitable dog for flying - Airedale was one suggestion. Beagle (as in Snoopy's imaginings of flying a Sopwith Camel) also featured. Other thoughts were anything with big ears.
Cheers
Graham
My daughter fell during recess and cut her lip and scratched her nose, but that sounds like nothing compared to those burns.
my husband set himself on fire playing with a lighter when he was four and nearly died ... he made it through even 'lo' those 45 years ago ... i'm sure treatment has come a long way since then ...
hoping for the best of news from you about her ...
Cheers pat.
