• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
At least in the NE also includes Legacy people, SVX people, XT6 people and just about any other subie! And some non subies too! Not sure how it works in CO though.

My husband and 11-year-old daughter love to go to the local county fair's Tractor Pull event every year. It's become kind of a father-daughter "date". She loves the tractors with the jet engines because they are pretty(??). :-)

Personally, I prefer the horse pulls. Guess that fits my old-moldy personality.
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
It was my first time to see a Tractor Pull, and it was a lot of fun. We just went to see the fair, and it so happened a tractor pull was being held that evening, so we really just stumbled on to it. WOW! Those things are loud!!

Bob: the book sounds way too sensationalist.

dude: there is a Legacy thread right here on Edmunds, though it's not a club. The Subaru Crew is a virtual club and all Subie owners are welcome.

G'day

If you want to see a tractor pull, you really need to see the Quambatook Tractor Pull. I am not sure that I realy want to advertise what Rural Australia is all about (I have already explained Bachelor and Spinster Balls for you) but here goes anyway!

There is also this link to the activity worldwide

Hmm, not sure that I would be seen there!

Yep, those FFC* appear to be quite similar to the ones I saw the other night. I figure if it's got an engine, and you compete with it, it can't be half bad.

Yeah but they aren't nearly boxy enough! :-)
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Torque + Boxy :) MMM MMM Good!

I actually like the new 4-runner, at least in pics. Nice and boxy. Of course way out of my price range though.

True Frank, they put aerodynamics way too high on the priority list.

Are the Sorentos here yet? Those seem cool, and priced right. I'd be curious to try one.

The Sedona van is actually nice, it even has a torquey V6 with a 5 speed auto tranny. Only the seat was lumpy, but no other major complaints.

• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The Sorrento is a bit to curved in the rear for my liking and towing is only 3500lbs. Other than that it looks great.

I don't like it - the design is too "busy". Too many design elements that don't blend in well together.

The front grille is upside down. The lights should be more tapered. The base of the A-pillar has too many seams. The fender flares look swollen, and the C-pillar is too thick.

Also, painted roof racks get scratched more easily. Those are for utility, not looks. And the wheels could be an inch bigger, the tires two inches bigger, to fill those huge wheel wells.

Even the 4Runner can't escape the painted silver interior trend.

Looks bigger, and should be a competent vehicle, but the restyle went downhill IMO.

<< And the wheels could be an inch bigger, the tires two inches bigger, to fill those huge wheel wells. >>

The SR5 comes standard with 265/70x16, and the Sport and Limited come with 265/65x17 tires. Those are the largest offered on any mid-size SUV.

I bet it will look better in person, although I don't mind the styling—and I do like the grille.

Did you download the PDF? It's a 33-page PDF, and loaded with technical info. According to the PDF, it's the first mid-size SUV to use a Torsen center differential, and shifts power fore and aft, depending on traction.

Bob
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
are very bad for offroad. The 16" ones are better.

-mike
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
OK, then let's look at it from the reverse point of view. Make the wheel wells smaller, so the already big tires don't appear small.

If it's got a Torsen I bet it has traction control standard. Otherwise in snow it'll be a dog.

Just skimmed the thing - looks like TRAC and VSC are standard on 2wd and 4wd? But how can a torsen be swithced to locked? RWD bias is good, 40/60. And they copied LR's hill descent control.

I wish the cladding were offered unpainted. And the hood scoop looks out of place on such a pricey, upscale SUV.

Aluminum block for the V6 (only), join the club. Finally. Timing chains, too. V6 has more power than the V8? Less torque of course. But it makes that power on premium (i.e. less on 87 octane), and the V8 requires premium.

Throttle-by-wire, too. The V6 seems like a good choice, but why just a 4 speed when the V8 gets 5? You'd think the less torquey engine needs the extra gears.

Class 3 hitch on the frame, you gotta love that Bob.

Rear air suspension. $2000 repair bills 8 years down the road. ;-)

That double-decker cargo tray is a great idea, thumbs up.

It looks huge, though, and probably heavy. I guess they're letting the Highlander take over the spot occupied by the previous 4Runner.

as Lexus GX470, which we saw at the NY Auto Show. 109.8" wheelbase, which is longer than out-going model. Still smaller than Land Cruiser and Sequoia.

V6 is now a long-stroke unit too. I agree, I wish the V6 also had the 5-speed automatic. I bet it gets it within a year or two.

Bob
• paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The reason for the big wheel wells is that they probably have a lot of wheel travel in which case you need to have open wheel wells for that to happen.

-mike
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I usually prefer the simpler Toyota styling when there are two clones, but the GX470 is far more handsome IMO.

Toyota has a strange lineup - the LC is the flagship but it's not the biggest.

I wish I was a full-fledged diplomat, imagine ordering one of those $25 grand Land Cruiser (delivered cost) with vinyl seats, diesel engine, and a 5 speed manual!

paisan: good point. I think the flares over-emphasize the wheel wells, too.

• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
As with the Baja and Avalanche, Toyota has gone a bit over the edge with the cladding with the new 4Runner, especially around the wheel wells. However, it doesn't bother me that much, and it certainly wouldn't keep me from not buying one.

I still think it will look better in person, much as the Baja does.

As to towing: 5000 pounds is good, and would more than meet any or all of my needs, but it certainly is not a class leader in that area. All the domestic mid-sized SUVs with V8s offer much more.

Anyone here know where I could find reviews of multifunction printer/scanner/copier machines? I tried a google and lycos search, but the sites that came back were pretty lame.Does anyone on the board have one, and if so, how is it...also taking suggestions on brands, separate devices, etc.

G'day

I have installed two printer/scanner/copiers in a work environment, both HP with good results. The first I did in the UK 5 years ago when they first came out and the second about 10 months ago. They work better as stand alones than networked units. Never needed a service call on either install although a bit temperamental when we have moved it around the network.

We have also installed one at home about 6 months ago, this one being an HP psc950. Works well for us. It does however depend on your needs. With school age kids, there are a lot of benefits to having scanner/copier/fax/printer in the house. This one also prints from various photo cards/sticks etc. HP seem to be very grief free for these products.

Hope that helps Serge

Cheers

by Toyota over "embargoed" 4Runner pixs, not to be linked on Edmunds, citing that it violates Toyota copyrights.

As I had mentioned, the guy who had posted the web site with all the new 4Runner pixs has been shut down (by Toyota). According to Host Tidester, it now it appears that Toyota is pressuring Edmunds not to allow those kinds of links to appear on Edmunds, at least as far as Toyota is concerned.

I think if that happens, it will set a very bad precedent, and will eventually come back to haunt Edmunds in the long run. If you're interested in this discussion, it's now appearing over in the 4Runner forum, over in the SUV area.

I think we can blame the movie "Clear and Present Danger" for the popularity of all this cladding. Remember those white Suburbans with the big flares? I swear they became popular after that movie.

Toyota got scooped! I bet those are intended for dealer training, that is how they seemed to be formatted.

If Edmunds isn't hosting the pics, they've done nothing wrong. They're not promoting anything directly.

And Toyota is foolish to attack them, creating this type of "buzz" on the internet only helps Toyota.

Saw that MG "Shooting Brake" again today, and get this - it's right hand drive! A woman was driving it, I guess she works at the Vet office (I drive by it every day and often see the car).

It was rather bizarre to look in my mirror and see no driver directly behind me!

Interesting that the Highlander may be the one to get a 3rd row seat option, not the 4Runner.

$24k seems like a good value, until you think about it - Toyota will give a stripped 2WD for that kind of money. I bet dealerships see nothing under $28k or so for the first several months.

Bob: those spy shots don't reveal much. Are they going IRS on the new F series?

<< Are they going IRS on the new F series? >>

I was told that by a couple of sources within Ford. The images don't reveal much, and I know Ford has been been doing some drastic cost-cutting on the next F-150, because of the extremely costly Firestone debacle. I just hope the IRS didn't get the ax. We'll know for sure, come January.

Bob
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If they spent the $$$ developing the Expedition/Navigator, I bet the F series will get it.

-juice
• rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
That certainly helps spread out the costs. Also, if they come out with the Expedition-based Excursion replacement (w/IRS), as they've already announced, that heavier-duty version will likely share the same rear suspension with the new F-150.

My understanding is that when the next-generation F-150 was originally conceived, IRS was to be part of the picture. That was several years ago, and well before everything hit the fan at Ford. My guess is 75/25 in favor of the IRS F-150 occurring. My only hesitancy, is in how ruthless the cost-cutting gets.

Bob
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's what I was thinking. The Expedition and Navigator should share the platform with the F-150, and the Excursion with the F-250.

Ford does so much volume on the F series that there is really no excuse to cut corners. That would be a shame.

I really think that GM leap-frogged them big-time with their latest full-size trucks, with more hp, better fuel efficiency, and some neat features like the seat belts built into the front seats, plus roomier rear seats.

Then Dodge took the tough-guy end of the spectrum and really nailed that with the new Ram. And they have the best rear seat/door arrangement.

So Ford has to find its angle - maybe being the most modern or high tech? Get the IRS and the first hybrid drivetrain offered on a truck, something like that. Plus the doors and a roomy rear seat.

I'm sure they'll be very careful about it - they sell about a billion each day.

They just put up the 4Runner review:

http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/roadtests/firstdrive/74756/article.html

The Hill-start Assist Control system mimicks Subaru's hill holder feature. Edmunds said it "uses control of the brakes to keep the vehicle from sliding backward on an ascent between the time you let off the brakes and apply the throttle"..

What's funny is that it's for an automatic, not a manual tranny. Do autos slip that much? I guess off road they might?

In fact it's sad that the last one had a manual and this one won't. They even had a V6/5 speed combo.

I don't get it. Is Toyota's legal department that bored?

They put the smackdown on an expose' web site a few days before it official breaks cover... WHY?

-Colin
• ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I've always held the opposite opinion. Manufacturers SHOULD start with premier web sites like Edmunds (shameless plug, I know) to create a grass-roots "buzz" on the internet.

I say show us a sneak peak at a future product, better yet - introduce it live at a chat! Sneak the regulars in with the press for a preview.

Imagine the headlines:

"juice samples the first H6 Baja"
"Colin takes an STi for a lap at Nurburgring"
"Bob tows his house with the new SUW"
"paisan tests the 8.0l H12 and calls its torque 'adequate', wishes for a diesel"

See, I'm not crazy. I told you trannies were failing on those Odys:

http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=40860

24,000 failures already, some other models are affected, too. At least Honda is giving them a warranty. Most Ody owners here at the Town Hall were buying extended warranties themselves, and usually for the tranny.

the '03 MDX gets a new 5-speed automatic. It's not clear, from what I've read to date, if this is the same automatic in the Pilot (or '03 Odyessy).

Same with the 4WD set up. The '03 MDX gets an improved version of what it had last year. Is that the same 4WD that the new Pilot has? The info is not clear on either of those questions.

No idea why they'd need that on the 4-runner on an AT. In all my wheeling I've never seen or heard of an AT stalling! You have 2 pedals and 2 feet! A hand brake would have been nice though, that is useful to get the rear LSD to engage which I hope the 4-runner has.

Now if they'd put the rumored 4.0 or 5.0l Isuzu diesel in the 4-runner I'd be game for it.

Juice: Are you talking about the Dodge extended cab or crew cab? Rear doors & seat on the crew cabs seem small to me, compared to the Fords & Chebbys. The suicide doors are good for sure, but I've sat in a bunch of 'em & feels like the back seats in the Dodgem's are smaller than the others. Am I "average" at 5'11" & 200 lbs, and/or what's the average size of a back seat rider in these rigs? If I got one, the average occupant back there would be kid-sized (although oldest is already in size 10 shoes.. at age 10) but I'd want adults to be comfortable back there as well.

Cheers!
