My 99 Silverado has 16 7/6.5 inch wheels. WTF 7/6.5 is I do not know. Maybe some where between 7 and 6.5?
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
The aluminum wheels are 16x7, the steel wheels are 16x6.5. When you buy the aluminum wheels you get a steel spare.

So, it could average out to 6.8".

I have a 2001 Chev 1500HD Shortbed Silverado LT with 13000 miles. When I have a load of 500 pounds or more in the rear and start up from a dead stop with a little speed I get what feels like I am on a washboard road. This is in the rear and last only about 1 Sec. May happen with no load but not near as much. This is my first posting.

I HAVE 2001 CHEV 1500HD SHORTBEAD SILVERADO LT WITH THE 6.0L MOTOR. I HAVE WHAT I WILL CALL A TICKING IN THE MOTOR. NOT A KNOCK AND DOES NOT GO AWAY. DEALERS SAY THEY CAN NOT HEAR BUT I AM OLD AND I HEAR. COULD IT BE A BAD BELT OR INJECTORS? I HEAR IT MORE FROM UNDER EITHER FRONT FENDER OR WHEN IN A CONFINED SPACE. THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS.
  • dgore1dgore1 Member Posts: 20
My 2001 1500HD LS has done the same thing since new. I started towing my travel trailer (21') at about 3500 miles. Noticed it most in Colorado when starting up steep grades from a dead stop, such as a stop light. Since then I notice it anytime I pull much of a load. Every once in a while the transmission will slip as well, even unloaded. That happens here in Missouri or anywhere else, hill or no hill. Slips when starting from a dead stop. Took it to the dealer. They told me that there wasn't any code registered so they couldn't fix it. I've asked several times for the warranty work order but haven't seen anything yet. Interested if anyone else has had this problem.

ON MY 2001 CHEV 1500HD SB SILVER ADO LT I HAVE A TRANS. THAT SLIPS AT TIMES AFTER I HAVE BEEN RUNNING. THE SLIP HAPPENS WHEN I COME TO A STOP AT A LIGHT THEN START UP. IT IS LIKE MY REAR TIRES START TO SPIN. RPM GOES UP THEN IT CATCHES. HAPPENS MORE ON SLIGHT UPGRADE. CAN NOT GET IT TO OCCUR FOR DEALER.
  • dgore1dgore1 Member Posts: 20
I've got that symptom also. Again, dealer couldn't find a thing wrong. No code stored in the OBD. I'm beginning to loose faith in my first Silverado experience. Noticed yesterday that the passanger side floorboard is soaking wet. Not sure what's going on there. I've been running the air conditionin so I suspect that has something to do with it. Anyway, I've been looking at the F250 Super Duty with V10. Guess what? No ticking in the engine. Not sure what to do at this point.
  • dgore1dgore1 Member Posts: 20
I have the exact same problem. Mine is very intermittent. Maybe once a week or once every two weeks. Never while in for service, or at least they're not admitting it.

Wasn't there a TSB for something like this? I think it had to do with a PROM or something?

Ok tonight i had to back my truck out of the driveway so my dad could pull his truck in. My grandmas car is in our driveway (they are on vacation and my mom is driving it) also. I was parked way over so i could open my door. Well i was backing out and heard a noise. Noticed i clipped the pass side mirror. Got out and i smashed the glass (mirror) and it fell out. I put it back tonight but it wont stay in.

Do i have to replace the whole mirror assembly? How much of a PITA is it? Also cost?

    Obyone HELP!!!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
the glass and asssembly seperate. Think it was posted on the Pacific Audio forum. I could give the manual a quick glance too. Will let ya know.

Course I'm assuming that the mirror body is still intact and attached to the truck cause if its not them you may as well buy the complete unit.

    Thanks man

If there is any info could you scan it and email?

I am so POed right now

Oh yea this past tuesday after driving in some pretty bad rain i got home and noticed my truck was COVERED in tar. Sides, windows, front, back, rims, tires. It was a mess. I used some dupont Prep-sol (recommended by bodyshop guy) to remove all the tar (and wax). Well today i finally got a new coat of zaino on. Looks great (except for the broken mirror now)

the dash mounted cup holder PN #, for the Graphite interior is 15753266.....does anyone have an idea on how to get the floor one out? Almost looks like you have to remove the seats.

I know this may sound odd coming from someone living in the Mojave Desert but I've never owned an auto with A/C before and don't know if what I'm experiencing is "GM-normal". Three things: first, that thing attached to the fire wall on the passenger side of the engine compartment with the foiled insulation and tubing routed to it (sorry I don't know what it's called, condenser maybe) makes a hissing sound whenever the A/C is on and for a short time after the engine is turned off. Second, there's an on again, off again high-pitched whirring whose pitch follows the RPM's when A/C is on. Lastly, and I know this can't be right, any time the recirculation button is pushed on, regardless of whether the A/C button is pushed on, the A/C comes on.
The truck is an 02. I notice a TSB, 01-01-39-002B, A/C - Noisy/Inoperative for 01's. Should I assume it applies to 02's as well? Is there a site to access those texts without subscribing for a year? Thanks.

other than the noises, how does the a/c unit perform?
  • noobie1noobie1 Member Posts: 326
Popcycles. Coming up the hill to the high desert Friday, 101 deg., fan set at no. 2, very comfortable. Annoying listening to that on - off whirring though. One thing I didn't mention before about the recirculation mode, even if the temp. control knob is in the red, A/C switches on. So I get a mixture. Screwy set-up. Can't be right. I'm polling here so as to be armed with information when I take it in. If no one else here reports the noises I'm experiencing, I can be relatively sure it's not "normal".

The A/C on when in recirculation mode is normal. Mine does it too. GM thinks we are all stupid and do not know how to use the recirculation mode. If they run the A/C when in recirculation mode there is no chance of windows fogging up. There are a few more "smarts" in the system. If you select heat/defog or defog the A/C comp will run as long as the outide temp is above 32. I think the system will kick you out of recirculation mode if you select floor. I have learned to "undo" all thier dumb settings. If you stop one notch before the setting it will not run the A/C comp or kick you out of recirculation mode. I had Hondas and Toyotas for many years and was able to set what I wanted, this is progress?

Thanks man. I think i can get away with replacing just the glass ($36). However i gotta wait a wk some guy bought the last one 5 min before i called the place :(

The housing is cracked but hardly noticable

Some auto parts stores sell the
ready cut glass that uses double
sided tape and it sticks over your
    existing cracked or broken mirror
glass. Only costs 10 bucks !
Bought one for my dads s-10 when he
wacked and cracked his mirror recently!

Sorry to hear you having problems with your 1500HD. I grew up in Excelsior Springs, MO and now live in Parkville, MO. I have an '01 2500HD 4X4 EC 6.0/4.10. Other than the cold start ticking in the engine, I have had zero problems with my truck (other than a pinging problem that the dealer fixed with a computer update). I noticed you mentioned this was your first GM experience. This was my first GM product also. Previously, I drove an '81 and '91 1/2-ton Ford. They were both excellent trucks (over 200K). I needed a little more towing capability than my old 302 5-speed, so I test drove an F-250 with the 5.4 and the V-10 (really couldn't see the extra money for a diesel). With the 3.73 rear gear, the 5.4 was pretty doggish. The V-10 had plenty of power. My die-hard Chevy buddy talked me into driving the 2500HD. To me, the 6.0 with the 4.10 felt comparable to the Ford V-10 with the 3.73. I liked the overall drive and comfort of the Chevy over the Ford, so I thought I'd give Chevy a chance. So far, and I know there are some who would disagree (sounds like you might be one of them), I am really happy with the Chevy.

I don't have any answers for you on the cold start ticking (other than my buddy's '97 GMC with the old 350 has ticked since it was pretty much new and it is still going strong with over 100K very hard miles) or your transmission problems, but as far as the floorboard being wet when running the A/C, it is pretty common for the A/C drain tube to get clogged which will cause water to back up the tube and empty into the floorboard on the passenger's side. All you have to do is locate the tube (under hood, usually around the firewall on the passenger side) and stick a close hanger up and unblock it.

Sorry for being so long-winded, but it was nice to see a poster so close to home. Good luck with your problems. What dealership did you purchase from? How is their service department? I bought mine from Henry Marten Chevy/Cadillac in Leavenworth, KS. So far, I would give their service department an "A". BTW, did you get the free 100K extended warranty from GM on your engine?

    Hi Guys,
I have a '01 2500HD CC 4x4 with the 6.0l. I have noticed that sometimes the engine seems to skip or "miss" especially when I have the engine under a load (uphill with the A/C etc.) Has anyone else experienced this? Other than the cold knock I haven't had any other problems.
  • sf0383sf0383 Member Posts: 204
I put the same dash mounted cupholder in my truck last year. Dealership wanted $50+ then. I went to a buddy of mine who runs a garage and he ordered it for me for between $25&$30. You might want to try a local body shop or garage and see what they will charge you.
  • whatsachevywhatsachevy Member Posts: 136
I also have an '01 2500HD with the 6.0. I had a problem with pinging under load at about 7K. Dealer loaded a computer fix and it solved the problem (now at 16,600 miles). I have not experienced the problem you mentioned. Does it seem like the engine or possibly the tranny?

Has anyone out there had a problem with rust particles showing up on the body of your truck?
I have an 01 2500 HD White, and have noticed rust particles around the passenger windows and on the body of the bed..... Dealership says it happend during transportation used a clay compound to hide it and heavy wax, however, only a patch job, more showing up... Then they tried to patch it with paint that doesnt match.... My vehicle is depreciating everytime they touch it.. Anyone else having that problem? You better look....
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
was transported from the factory. Claying will remove it. At the time of prep they should have removed all of it. Looks like you may get a free paint job out of this one, especially if the rust starts to show.
  • therubetherube Member Posts: 6
Yep, got that rail dust in that paint now. Sure will cut that shine, but aint goin hurt that haul any, thats for sure. Good luck on this one now!

concerning the trans slip, my 02 1500 hd slips
ocassionally when I take off from a stop light. When I posted before rayt2 said there was a TSB# 00-07-30-006 stall/surge at stop or when shifting to drive or reverse. I only have 4000 miles on the truck and haven't taken it in yet. Hope this helps
  • dgore1dgore1 Member Posts: 20
Thanks for the response. I live just south of Kearney, so I know where you're at. Bought the truck at Westfall/O'Dell. Sales Dept. was fine. Minimal time involved in making deal with no monkey business at all. Very professional. Service is at or below avg. Personelle are not well informed on what's covered under warranty, etc. My experience has been that if the on board diagnostics don't catch anything, there's nothing wrong??? Since my last post, I've had not slippage in the transmission and the floor board is now dry. I think you're right about the pinging. There may be some damage done, but it's probably so minimal that it won't have much effect, if any, on the longevity of the engine. Thanks again.
  • mtrammellmtrammell Member Posts: 125
GM has a special acid was that they use to get rid of all the rail dust. I have had the wash done to all of 5 GM vehicles I've purchased over the past 5 years. It does not hurt the paint/clear coat. They should also give it a good wax job when they finish.
  • ricschricsch Member Posts: 540
Another way to remove the rail dust is to use a detailing clay. Easy to use and it works well.
  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
Do you have that part number for the driver side sun visor with slide out extension that fits the Silverado, I can't take the sun on the side of my face for the 50 mile ride home from work anymore.
I thought I remember you changing yours out to new style a ways back.

Its been awhile so I may have forgotten the exact place. You can check these out and see if they will work. You can pretty much figure the dimensions of these shades as where they bolt on to the roof is a constant and measure the extension and the shade itself proportional to it. Does that make sense?

  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
I don't want the lights so I'll give them a call or e-mail to see if they have without.
I wonder if the newer rados have this or not......maybe can get from GM dealer?

Did a $1200 customizing this past Friday night on the Rado, backing into driveway early morning hours (2:30 am after playing 2 hours of ice hockey) paying close attention to right side of truck when I said "well don't forget about the Windstar on right" looked in mirror and it was FULL of the Windstar......needless to say I got a twofer, damaged both the Rado & the wifes Windstar in one fell swoop. Took out my rear bumper, left bumper brace & pushed in the lower left side quarter panel. *#@&; :-( ARGHHHHHHH! God I hate when that happens ! Haven't gotten the estimate for the wifes van yet, can hardly wait. This one coming out of pocket cuz ain't got no more grace with insurance company since wife totaled her last van.

Hi, It's been ALONG time since I've been on Edmunds, & can't find what I'm looking for. Can anyone HELP? Two part questioon... I have a 2k 4X4 Silverado, 6.0,auto, ext.cab, 3/4t with 22k on it. When I went to leave from camp the other day, as the trans. shifted from one gear to another, it made a real loud clunking sound in the transmission/drive shaft area. I tried starting off in 2nd & 3rd, & it did the same thing. It also clunked when it downshifted. This took place at slow speeds. It sounded like the drive shaft/trans. was going out. Noise was very loud, & abrubt. I managed to get home with no problems, & I couldn't get it to happen again. I drove it through all the gears, but could not duplicate the problem. My truck has easy miles on it. Any help would be appreciated. This should be fun trying to explain this to my dealer..... Doe's anyone know how to get on the cabover chat? Thank you- Gary
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Few wks ago i went fishing. At the end of a 200 mile trip and we were getting close to the lake i came to a stop sign when i hit the gas it sounded like something under the truck was broken (clattering/banging). Did same thing at next stop sign. I got there parked turned truck off and looked under to inspect. Nothing looked wrong. I started it up and drove a little had my gf watch on the street to see if she could see anything. Hasnt made the noise since.

I am still stumped. It was a hot day (90+). I think after turning the truck off the computer somehow reset itself. Maybe just a slight glitch. I have 27,500 Miles on mine (5.3 auto ext cab Z71)

At least you got your hockey in before it happened.

Could have been worse...like doing that before hockey and then missing the skating.

absolutely no chance against the lightning...much less the Dodge. And the saying, "saving the best for last doesn't apply here...."
  • rayt2rayt2 Member Posts: 1,208
Mark, Yea, lucky thing for the opposing teammates that I did this damage AFTER hockey, or my stress may have reflected in the play LOL.

Ryan & Grizz, 30500 on odometer so far, just got back from camping this past weekend and no problems with truck other than those long climbing hills, tranny was down in second gear at times pulling trailer, tach @ 4700rpm maintaining 65 mph, that sucker was scream'in but the Borla's sounded oh so sweet. Used a little bit of oil but well within the NEW GM standards for consumption, yea right !
Contemplating an extended warranty to cover the transmission down the road, just don't have a lot of confidence with them since I blew one up on my 88 towing, and I believe it's the same model now as was then.

i just purchased a 2002 rado ext. cab two weeks ago and noticed that the paint on the frame is sticky to the touch. it can also be scraped off with your fingernail. the whole frame is like this front to back. it seems as if the paint isn't dry. has anyone else noticed this, please reply.

Thats not paint, but rather undercoating. It will remain pliable like this for years to come
