Does anyone know if you can order the 4.10 on a 2wd truck equipped with the 4.8 liter? It seems to me in the brochure that you must have a 4wd truck for that.
Hi all! Really enjoy reading all the comments on this thread. I'm just about convinced to go ahead with installation of a spray in bedliner on my 99. I've read the article in the latest Truck Trend but it just talks about the various suppliers and doesn't recommend one over the other. Any one have real world experience with Rhino vs. Line X or others that they can share. It seems like I only have Rhino available in my local area (central NC). Any comments?
Been reading through the responses on this post. Great feedback - be nice for some GM folks to see that people generally like their truck.
I've got a 99 z71,1500 extented cab, 5.3L w/4.10 rear, solid black. Built 6/99, must be one of the last '99's.
If you are thinking about buying and have a chance and/or choice, get the 4.10 rear gear. Drove 3.73 and 4.10. Although it's not like being hit over the head with a shovel, you can tell the difference.
Now, my delima: to buy bed rails or not, that is the question. Also would like some input on side rail protectors. Saw a little chatter on them, but nobody has said "Wow, looks great" or "well..."
And, what happened to Cindy. Got that new truck and has now left us for dead. Oh, well.
I just got my 2000 5.3 with 373's. I also drove both and thought the 373's were way better for all around performance. If you get the 410's, ya better get the slip rear or look out come rain. Too much jump at the start and too much spin in the rain. Not a great big difference. And anybody that tells you they get 19 in a 4 whl drive 5.3 with 4.10 gears is telling you a story, or their 85.
Only items unique to LT that LS could not get even when optioned out is: memory seats as mentioned by RWAGONER and heated seats on both front seats. This is true at least on 1500 Silverado's.
Been looking at Fords and Dodges since this past weekend. Had to load up in the rain to go to a rifle match Sunday. Trying to load in the garage through the drivers door was the pits. It was raining and besides my own stuff in the bed of my 97 chevy (covered by a roll-n-lock ) I had tons of other stuff as match director. Targets, scales scoring equipment etc to put in the damm back seat without a door on the drivers side. Hurt my back. Tonight I dropped a bag of groceries. Maybe my next one will be a Chevy when they get their act together, but I'm not waiting any longer than it takes to get a good deal. Besides a fourth door maybe they'll have a better setup for towing 5th wheels by then also. The current 11300 limit restricts a persons choices in 5th wheels. Good luck to all of you. By 02 maybe the big gas engine will be available along with a 4th door. ...... Rich
They will set you back about 280 dollars (delivered). I ordered mine directly off there website and had them in 1 day. No holes to drill either, which is nice.
Parking lots are too crowded to make the third door practical, let alone a 4th, in my opinion. Better would be to have easy access to the back which you get with either the manual seats or the memory power seats with one setting being all the way forward. Even using the switch doesn't take long, and is far better than to try to get into the suicide door when you have a car parked right next to you.
>Only items unique to LT that LS could not get even when optioned out is: memory seats as mentioned by RWAGONER and heated seats on both front seats. This is true at least on 1500 Silverado's.<
I test drove a 2500 4x4 recently and when I had to squeeze it back on the lot I noticed the ps was really weak at idle when the truck was not moving. Especially true if you turn the wheel a little fast. Has anyone noticed this?
The power steering on the Chevy is variable. Supposed to be very easy at stop or low speeds and more resistance as you go faster. Chevy has had this for several years. I have not noticed any problem in the 4 99's I test drove. Rich
Has anyone compared the ride between the Z71 and ZX3 suspensions? I am curious about the ZX3 w/ride control, I don't plan to do much off-roading, the ride would be more important to me. However, I do not want to give up the look of the Z71 (with the exception of the decal). Do they basically look the same? Heigth and so forth? I also will be going with the larger tires -P265/75R16, what effect will this have on the ride?
I would appreciate any input, not sure what will be best! (I will test drive soon)
I have a 6.0 with 4:10's,On/Off Road 245/75's and NO Locking Diff. I have no problem taking off in the rain. No slippage what so ever....even when getting on the pedal.
Placed my 2000 Silverdo order on 8/16 and received an order number within a couple days.
Spoke to dealer this morning regarding build date and was told my order is in "Code 3100 status". Dealer further mentioned that "Code 3400 status" is where we need to be to get a build date, however he estimates w/o 9/27.
Does anyone have information regarding this "Code 3100 vs 3400 status"? Is this merely GM ordering terminology, or am I getting fed a line by the dealer?
Lets use some common sense here. You have a 6.0 with 4.10's and an open rear. If I had that, and it didn't spin when I jumped on it in the rain, I would have some serious questions about power. Hell, my 3.73's will burn both if I give it the gas in the rain. BTW what are you doing with that set-up?
The ZX3 is only available on the 2wd trucks and the Z71 is only on the 4wd trucks, so it would be pretty hard to compare the two!! Have also heard that GM is having a hard time producing the ZX3 and keep suspending it as an option!
Thanks for the info, I must have misunderstood the possible suspension options for the 4wd on the KBB site. I refuse to give up the look of the Z71, How is the ride of this vehicle? How does it compare to past similar vehicles? Will the P265/75R-16 effect the drive? And what would be your honest opinion of the ride?
Will appreciate any in-sight on this matter!
Thanks,
ps. Any preferences between Chevy and GM Z71? If so, Why?
You must remember that the HD tranny has 2.48 first gear instead of 3.06 of the LD tranny. I have no problem what so ever in rain. What am I doing with that setup?....well..uhh...perhaps driving it?
Open rear differential makes you a better off roader....as you pick your lines better. In all my years..I have yet to need a locker. It wasn't a Price issue...just my choice.
My 1/2 ton 4.8 4.10 locker will light up the tires when it's wet. The 3/4 probably accelerates faster than our 1/2's as the get better grip due to more normal force at the rear wheels.
1/2 tons do have more pep with the same amount of pedal push...due to the weight (around 500 lbs??? less)and tranny gear.
3/4's get into the pulling range quicker..rather than jumping from the light. it takes off good....but to really launch requires more pedal. it's made for Hauling/towing...not drag racing. When two trucks..or one truck for that matter..take off racing from a light...it looks dumb as hell. Racing is for cars.
I've got a '99 2WD Ext. Cab SB, with the standard suspension package (no firm ride or anything like that), and I've noticed that the suspension squeaks when going over speed bumps/humps at low speeds (< 25 mph). Have any of you noticed this problem, and if so, what's the fix?
For road acceleration and traction I would think the following setup would be best. The 2000, 1500 w/5.3 and the Autotrac engaged. Why? A comparable 1500 is 800 lb lighter than a 2500, with only 30 ft-lb of torque less. The Autotrac will engage the front wheels as soon as the rear start to spin. Also I'd guess the 265 tires would give you the most contact to put that power to the ground.
Talked to salesman today and he told me that the 5.3L 2000 models currently being delivered still have the 270 hp motors vs the advertised 285 hp. Is this true? He stated that chevy put these numbers in the brochures in anticipation of the higher hp motors being produced so they would not have to change the brochures later. How will the MPG be affected?
of the trucks I have test drove, the 5.3 in a Z71 with 4.10 rearend was the quickest off the line. It also had the most snap when I punched it at 65mph. Second was a Ford V10 3/4 ton 4x4 with 4.10 rearend. Third was a tie (by seat of pants feel) between a Dodge 3/4 4x4 with 3.54 rear and V10 and the Chevy 3/4 4x4 6.0 with 4.10 rear. The Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 6.0 with 3.73 was only slightly slower than the 4.10. .... Rich
rlangford2...I took my Silverado in for a "knock" in the suspension/front end and they replaced some rubber bushings that their mighty computer search told them was a problem causing a "squeak". Although this wasn't my problem it may be yours. Email me if you want me to get more specific, otherwise take it in and hope they find it before you grow old!
I purchased the black plastic bed rail protectors from the dealer that are a GM product and they match the tailgate protector very well and look sharp. I suppose stainless or alum. would be stronger but these are pretty durable. They go on with industrial double stick tape very easily. $140.00. BEDLINER I had "Speedliner" put in my truck for the same price as rhinoliner wanted...$400.00 for shortbox. It has Kevlar in it and is supposed to be the strongest on the market. Also has lots of colors or colormatch for $50.00 more and is more resistant to fading than rhinoliner. It is truly amazingly tough. I can't dig into it with a shovel tip at all!
I'm glad you're happy with the GM rail caps. I might go that route myself, haven't decided between black plastic and SS from Putco. But boy do you get reemed buying from GM, $140 for plastic?! That's about the price of SS. The Deflecta-Shield black plastic from JC Whitney are $85 for 3 pieces (old C/K type).
Which tailgate protector did your truck come with, the big flat one or the thin wrap around style? When you say they match is that the color/texture or the shape? Do they have holes for the stake pockets?
I found the fix for that annoying low speed squeak. Take a look under the cab near where it joins the box. There is a grounding cable (1 per side) that ties the cab to the frame. This cable on the frame side is not bolted tightly to the frame by design, which leads to that annoying squeak. Simply add some grease around the stud and the cable, this cured it on mine.
I just stopped at the GMC dealer to see what he had in stock. Loaded with 2000's, no 99's left. At first glance it looks like there has been a price increase. Is this true?
Wow,the Z71 is a damn nice truck. Anybody out there got one of these things? I just went to the Chevy dealer and spent 2 hours with Vig (an annoyed Chevy salesman). I came too close to plunking down yet another down payment, for yet another 60 mos of payments. The temptation is too great - i just might go back on Saturday and order one. Anybody heard anything about the 2001 models? Another words, should I wait till next Sept / Oct to buy?
Time to stop lurking and start asking questions. I am getting close to ordering time. I am trying to decide between the 1500 and 2500 series. I would consider the 2500 for the 6.0 alone (the extra strength for off-road work would be nice too) if I could be confident I wouldn't take a big hit in mileage. What kind of mileage are you folks getting with your 6.0 litre motors and various rear ends as compared to the 19+ MPG I am hearing about from those with the 5.3 litre in the 1500?
How about the ride as compared the the 1500 with the Z71 package?
I've got a Z71 with the 265 tires. See my comments in post # 485 of this conference item about the way it rides. Still very happy with it. Would definitely recommend the Z71 suspension package.
I have a question about a radiator type cooler on 2000 silverado's. Looking at the front of the truck on the rt. side of the a/c condenser coil there is a vertical cooler that I don't have on my truck but appears to be on trucks 1/2 or 3/4 ton with the trailer pkg. I do have the trans. cooler located in front of the a/c condenser. Any help would be great since I found one other part missing from the truck.
I just bought a 2000 1/2 ton, LT, z-71, and have noticed when braking rapidly the transmission "clunks" when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. Also occasionally it seems to shift weird from 2nd to 3rd. Again it "clunks" when going from park to reverse. the truck only has 350 miles on it. Are these normal? the tranny doesn't seem to be any better than the '90 ck I had with 120,000 miles on it!
Placed my 2000 Silverdo order on 8/16 and received an order number within a couple days.

120 days i have no truck, dealer WILL NOT give me my down payment back.doing a locater is like pulling teeth. not returning my phone calls , sales manager is completely useless.i have found truck at other dealers that will not trade with my guy. im totally backed agaist the wall.original deal was i would have to wait 6-8 weeks.[verble].any ideas would help.
I heard from a reliable source that the manufacturer of the Axles has big time problems with supply and may possibly be going to back out of their contract with GM? You would think there would be a clause of some kind to prevent this? 3/4 tons may have the plug pulled on them for a while? Don't take this as carved in stone....just letting you know what I heard.
American Axle out of Buffalo makes the axles for GM on this truck. I know several people that work at that plant, and have heard nothing regarding production problems - or any contract disputes / or cancelations with General Motors.
The only issue that may delay parts that I am aware of is the impending UAW contract issues currently being reviewed by Ford - which will effect GM shortly.
At this stage in the game - it appears as though both sides will come to an agreement and prevent any delays in production.

It seems to me in the brochure that you must have a 4wd truck for that.

Probably because an LT comes standard with leather. Just a guess, though ...
LTs are also the only way to get power seats with memory (also standard), the primary reason I did buy an LT.

Hold out boss!!
My stomach churns at the thought of you "settling" for a Dodge or Ford.
Can't you park on the other side?..or farther over?..perhaps back in?
