In an earlier post I read that there is a replacement oil for the transfer case to help with "grabbing" when turning on dry pavement while in auto 4WD. Is there a TSB out for this? I mentioned it to my dealer and they don't know anything about it. My symptoms with the grabbing while turning is similar to driving while in 4 High on dry pavement.

I guess I am interested in knowing how this autotrack system works. Any info appreciated.

I don't know exactly what the new fluid is for, but the other day when I had my 2000 in the shop for clunking transmission, they replaced the transfer case fluid with the new blue stuff. the "blue juice." I haven't noticed any difference, although I have only had the transfer case in 4hi for a short time just to see if it was working

Water was pooling up on the lower door weather-strips. Popping off the running boards, water was found on the cab floor. The leak was traced to water seeping in behind the inner door panel and dripping onto the weather strip, then into the cab. Upon removing the door panels for inspection (which is a whole lot easier than the C/K’s), faults were found with the water-shield behind the door panel. The shield is heavy gage plastic, if it were more compliant (there are many areas on different planes) and the adhesive (which is like heavy duty post-it-note stuff) was maybe 50% more aggressive, the whole thing might work better. Not too mention it was installed poorly.

RTV was out of the question if removal was ever necessary again and it would have been a big mess. Not sure what to do, I temporarily applied clear two inch labeling tape to the lower edge of the seal so that if water gets by, it ends up past the weather strip. I’ll see what the dealer service dept. thinks later. Even if the system worked, water will still end up between the inner metal of the door and the plastic shield.

The window frame assy. bolts were checked, some were loose, one was stripped out. I was going to put a nut and lockwasher on the other side of it but the threads were gone. It’s holding…

The door spring/détente/holding device was lubed up and the clicking noise some have talked about is gone. I only did this to the drivers side because I had removed the water-shield. There are two rollers and a torsion spring that act on the bar seen coming out of the door near the hinges. Popping out the rubber grommet would probably give access for grease.

For the audio buffs, the large speaker mounts on the door itself and the small speaker mounts on the door panel.

what are you doing ripping your truck apart? Warrenty will do that for you. HA HA. Ok I should not say this but there is a fix for the water problem you speak of, updated plastic piece i belive.

Also the the sticky stuff works great, if it holds to tight you can't get into the door without ripping the plastic, catch twenty two.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
How do you take off the door panels?
  • john104john104 Member Posts: 11
    26andrew1,
When I discussed this problem with the people at the service dept., all they said was "the water doctor is in Monday mornings and he can find any leak, we have not heard of the problem from others". Well, I didn't get the best confidence boost from that. Ok: So do you have any specific info on the fix? I would really appreciate it.

vince4: Go to the Audio Pacific GM Truck and Sport Utility Performance Forum and look up post "Silverado inner door panel removal" posted by Dude on 10/5/99 at 18:10:40. Or else get back to me and I'll post a copy (I don't have it with me now).

Jeeze you guys, If I had $8,000 more when I bought my Silverado, I would have bought the F350SD CC with the V10. It's a great motor! My buddy is getting about 3mpg less than me with his V10 in a truck that weighs about 50% more.
  • zbad71zbad71 Member Posts: 226
My dad's wife has a 99 Ford V10. It is not impressive to me at all. I can see why the tests are coming up showing the GM 6.0l to outperform it. The 6.0l "V8" also gets it in fuel economy too.

No V10 produced thus far has proven to me to be a benefit over a strong V8 motor, at least not as a majority of pluses over minuses.

I've seen a couple of 2000's with the factory wheel flares installed. Looks great! Now I'm jealous and want them for my 99 Z71. Any supplier ideas for me? Other that the dealer? I'm sure that my dealer would want an arm and a leg(I'm rather attached to these, ha ha).

Zbad's right on this one - even with the 2000 power improvements I'll probably lag behind the 6.0L. 10 cylinders sound great, but it just doesn't perform...
  • kantonkanton Member Posts: 142
I just read a comparison between the f-250 superduty v-10 short box super cab 4x4 and the gmc 2500 short box ex cab. the smaller v-8 in the gmc outperformed the v-10 in every test but one, acceleration from 0-30mph (or something like that) I don't remember the exact speed, but it was at the start of the acceleration curve. I was just so impressed with the other performace catergories; especially how the v8 was about 6 seconds faster from 50-70mph I believe. at any rate the 6.0L v-8 is one smokin' motor! if anybody is interested in the article is way in an older issue of Motor Trend, I'm sure it is online in the archive section of motortrend.com

I've seen two companies. Performance Products sells one (don't remember the name) and also www.stylinconcepts.com sells them "starting at $199."
  • zbad71zbad71 Member Posts: 226
I have seen both of those also. I like the Xenon Sport flares they picture in Performance Products, but the ones shown in StylinConcepts are over $100 cheaper and look to be the same thing. $229 over $334. I am not sure if the difference is you can get the more expensive ones from Performance Products painted to match or not, but if its just a higher price, the ones at StylinConcepts looks like the way I will go.

I'm looking for the combination wheel flare / mud deflectors for my '99 1500 Z71. Any idea of where to get those?
  • dch0300dch0300 Member Posts: 472
Can someone explain to me why a Silverado with a manual transmission will get better gas mileage than one with an automatic transmission.

Yesterday I saw a 2000 Silverado LT, Z-71, 265's, Indigo Blue with Black wheel opening flares. All I can say about it is..........Wow! What a nice looking truck! I will definitely need to have those on my new truck when I order it (only available on 4WD LS/LT, invoice is $155).
  • lexmarklexmark Member Posts: 68
Probably everyone can do a better job of explaining why an automatic gets poorer mileage than a manual - but here goes.

An automatic tranny has a torque converter. The torque converter is filled with oil and slips to provide clutching. The slipping is not efficient and costs fuel mileage.

Add the extra weight and drive-line mass and you get less mileage. I think this is true even when the torque converter is locked up.
  • zbad71zbad71 Member Posts: 226
Lexmark is exactly on target with what I was going to post in response to manual fuel economy over automatics.

The slipping is done even more on these new trucks to accommodate the female persuasion (at least thats what the manuf. claims.) To get the "smoother" shifts, the transmission is designed with "upshift delays" and more "slipping" if you will, to make the transition between gears less abrupt.

I on the other hand, much prefer a crisper shift. I don't mind harder shifts. Its easier on the transmission too.(contrary to what most people think). Most people think the hard shift add wear to the transmission. Its just the opposite. That is why a lot of truck enthusiasts and especially racers buy shift kits or aftermarket programmers and computer chips. They can get rid of the sloppy shifts and it also improves the fuel economy.

Hope this helps. I think lexmark pretty much said the same thing without all my jabbering.

Being able to get flares on half tons now makes us 3/4 owners harder to spot now.
Besides wheels...how we gonna be different?

Kinda like when they made the cool ZR1 Vettes with the square tailight openings.....then made them all that way!

    Tim,

    Have you considered custom plates?

    3/4 GUY

Then there's always that lime green color Dodge used to put on their 70 Cuda's!

I know, too much time on my hands.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    No doubt.

I have a custom on the Hurst - Say Wut

Thought about Say What for the 3/4.

7 letters was not available back when i got the hurst.

Just got caught up on posts as I was away from PC for a week. I too have always tryed to buy American and it makes me feel better that my money goes into the pocket of a U.S CEO that doesn't give a sh*t about anyone as opposed to a JAPAN CEO who doesn't give a sh*t about anyone.
  • zbad71zbad71 Member Posts: 226
You are right. When it comes down to it, neither domestics or imports care about the customer to the extent they should. They are about equal in reliability also. With that, I say buy whatever will help the US economy and you enjoy driving.

Even though that just happens to be GM products!
    Heeheehehehe
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Performance Products tends to have high prices. Look for that brand from other distributors before you choose.
  • planejaneplanejane Member Posts: 167
I know what you mean about the wheel flares, I would like to keep them exclusively for 3/4 tons. What the heck are they thinking???? No Fair!

How does your black truck keep up with dirt and dust? I have been taking mine to get washed about every 2 weeks. In medium charcoal grey its not bad, but I love when it gets washed and it so sparkly metallic.

Tell us people who want to know how, how to post sounds, pictures and colored letters on these posts, will ya?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
gets dusty dirty in about 1 day. When it rains..it gets trashed. Nothing new.
I've been much too busy lately to wash it...so it's been Grey for a few weeks!

    Pictures and sounds....

You must move them to web space first.
Type the web address of the sound/picture in your browser....hit enter..you should hear or see it...highlight the address....copy...and paste into the next E-mail or post. now you have a link.

I propose a contest for the first person to own a 4 door Silverado or Sierra.

    1. The first person to own a 4 door Silverado or
    Sierra wins!
    2. Proof, in the form of a posted picture, must be
provided. Owner must be pictured sitting in the
new truck, all 4 doors open, giving the thumbs-up
signal. Note: 1 thumb must be up for finally getting the truck you want and 1 thumb must be down for all the owners who feel they settled for a 3 door. (you can also consider the 1 thumb down for being shafted by GM - you probably paid more for the option)
    3. Sorry, your only prize will be the prestige of
    owning the seemingly unattainable truck.

All posts will be closely scrutinized to ensure they have not been "Manipulated" by the poster.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Yesterday i heard (hope its not true) that all trucks as of 1-1-2000 will have the 4th door standard :( this means MSRP will go up this sucks i really only wanted 3 doors but i guess ill have to settle for the 4 doors. \
Hey who on here seen that indigo blue truck with the wheel flares? Where was it what state? Havent seen one but i want one and wanna see what it looks like. I got my performance magazine today looks like ill be getting a smitty built or manik grill guard and nerf bars both in black with black wheel flares in indigo blue. This sounds like it will be pretty awesome looking. Anyone have one or a picture of a truck like this??? Has anyone installed a grill guard? It says it installs to the tow hooks does this mean u cant use them? I really like those and they will come in handy if i get stuck ( i plan on not but u never know). Well any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is to buy the best product for you that is out there. If the best product for you is not made in US, then the US will have to make the product better if they plan to compete.

For the record, all my cars have been GM, but I didn't buy them because I wanted US products, I bought them because they were the best car/trucks for my money.

    Mike

P.S. I stay away from 'made in China' stuff but that is a whole other can of worms.

    ryanbab,

I got a close look at the Indigo Blue Silverado, LT, Z-71 with Black wheel opening flares two days ago. It was brand spanking new. It was bought at Everett Chevrolet in Everett Washington. I've seen it everyday since then, and if you want I can get a digital picture of it and e-mail it to you, or e-mail it to the TRUCKFORCEACTION so everyone can drool over it. Damn, I wish it was my truck.
  • mfreeman1mfreeman1 Member Posts: 13
Lets hear it, what are your plans?

Does anyone know if there is any difference between Westin Nerf bars and Smittybuilt? There is a large price difference, and I was wondering if the quality or design was better on the Smittybuilt to justify the extra cost.

Post 722, Shampton, Just geeting caught up on my reading in this topic so I hope you get this. I was just down to my GMC dealer last week having my current '96 SLE serviced and stopped by the truck managers office to get a status on the order for my new Y2K 2500 HD Sierra SLE, which I ordered on 8/2/99. He showed me his order sheet and my truck had a build date of 10/4/99 and a code of 3400. He went to the back of the order sheets and showed me that 3400 stated " in frame assembly". He told me I should have my truck by the end of the month. This is about 12 weeks from date of order. I don't think your dealer is giving you a line because I saw what the code meant. Hang in there. If you've got a 3400 code after your order number then you should be in fine shape. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
  • zbad71zbad71 Member Posts: 226
Like someone posted earlier, the ones you can get at performance products are over 100.00 more than Stylin Products. Stylin Products - 229.00, Perf Products - 334.00

Putco SS Pipeline Running Boards for both the Cab and box:

    (expensive..but damn nice)

    Putco SS bed rail caps:

    http://www.teleweb.net/mgdvhman/ptn0024.jpg

(only the sides...not the front and back)

Tailgate will be the factory thin type. Front rail and bed will be a GM drop in liner which is supposed to be here tomorrow Via a buddy of mine

    Putco SS locker Rails:

    http://www.teleweb.net/mgdvhman/siderails32.jpg

And a pair of the Putco SS center Tie downs:

    http://www.teleweb.net/mgdvhman/ptc041.jpg

Bug guard will be soon also....haven't really decided?

Thought about tinted windows on side..maybe 20%? 10% is illegal here.

Tires will stay the same for a while. Mods to the engine will probably not happen either...as I will sell in 2 years anyway.

Thanks to Dave40 for turning me on to Putco. Nice stuff Boss!

Possibly first week in November I may go to Vegas for a show. Everything and anything you can imagine for aftermarket accessories will be under one roof.

Might just find tooo many ideas?

    Keep ya posted.

    Swobig,

Ya may have the flares....but you will never be a 3/4.

    You "tiny Grasshopper" for now..

Sorry but awhile back there were postings about missing oil coolers in early 99 Silverados. mine was built 1/99 and its missing the cooler; the dealer verified it, but he says thats life. I know he is giving me some [non-permissible content removed] here and I'll try another dealer.

But does anyone have any service bulletin information regarding what the official Chevy policy is. Any other recommendations. Just looking for some advise before I try again.

PS the heavy towing pkg and Z71 was ordered on the truck. Its a 99 Silverado LS/ext 5.3L auto, autotrac Z71 w/tow pkg.

  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Topic 691 is about that. I read somewhere that people had received letters from GM and the coolers would be added by the dealer.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
    Bravo.
  • zbad71zbad71 Member Posts: 226
For some STUPID [non-permissible content removed] reason, trucks without the cooler have to be part of GM's "campaign" to have them added. My truck did not come with one. I have proof that I paid for one. I went to my selling dealer (worthless as they are) and they said that my truck's VIN # doesn't come up to be part of this campaign. They sent me to GM Customer Service where I went through over 2 weeks worth of hassle. I finally got GM Customer Service to call the dealers Sales Manager who also gave a runaround.

I don't get it. I paid for something that I didn't get. Now I have to go through a bunch of hassle to get it, even with proof of my purchase.

I finally got the selling dealer to agree to put it on, only after I threatened lawsuit. I guess they are still mad at me from getting a 15,000 truck contract cancelled and given to another dealer because of the way they treated me in the past!

Their loss. However, I am a little disappointed that GM has their head up their [non-permissible content removed] on this one!

I just saw a brand new Charcoal Grey 1/2 ton with Z71 yesterday on a lot with WHEEL FLARES!
Damn, that truck looked exactly like my 3/4. The only difference was the sticker - it had Z71 instead of 4x4. Oh and of course, the 1500 vs. 2500 on the side of the truck.

I would like to sit my truck next to a Z71 1/2 ton and see which sit higher. But, hey, Tim and I both know how much more truck ours is. Right on Little Grasshopper!

Not running boards on a 4x4 truck! Running boards are for vans and 4x2's. Makes them appear to sit low. If your mother in law cann't get in, leave her home (g). ...... Rich

Go back and read your post #1209. Look, maybe I'm just too stupid to read between the lines, but what are you talking about and what is the dealer offering for free?

If it's just me, ignore my poor reading skills and accept my appologies. I certainly didn't mean to imply you were a sissy. Where did that come from?
  • lexmarklexmark Member Posts: 68
Just wondering, vince4, did you ever get your truck with trailer mirrors, or are you still waiting? If you've got it now, do you like the extension mechanism? Do the fully extended mirrors ever get blown out of place when you meet large trucks? How about the looks?

By the way, see how stupid I am. I can't even tell if "Bravo" was for me or for Ryan.

My truck (3/4T) was built on 9/24 and is still sitting at the yard awaiting shipment. Another guy here had his 3/4 Ton built on 10/5, I guess it's keeping mine company. I WANT MY TRUCK!! Anybody else having this problem? Anybody have a number that might help me find out what's going on? I'm starting to get worried.

Have em on my 99. Work great. Don't seem to get knocked out of position or retract during high speed towing/passing. Have been up to 85 for short stretches towing.

Don't know how well they will hold up in the long run. At 10,000 miles so far no problems. Do have a blind spot on the right side due to lack of convex mirror. My SuperDuty buddy is envious.
