Hi Brian / Moderator / Friends, I am new to this forum and started watching / reading all the comments and excited and its very Useful. Thank you !!!

I got a quote to buy 2015 Honda CR-V LX AWD in NY. Westchester County.
Sale price (including all the fees except Tax and DMV) = $23,000.
    $23000 + TAX + DMV.
(No Trade in, $0 down payment, with 720+ credit score).
Invoice Price: $24072. ie., Sale prices is $1072 less then the Invoice price.
I see in the forum that the best price would be $1500 to $2000 less than the Invoice price. that means, should I aim for $22000 ? should I wait for couple of weeks or end of this month (ie., this quarter end) ? anybody getting sale price - quote for $22000 ?
Whats the best deal (sale price) you would say for labor day ?
    how about APR % ? 0.9% for 720 + score ?

    For Lease: MSRP : 25575, Sale Price : $23000, How much Money factor , Depreciation % ?
in other words, how much the monthly payment with $0 down for 36 months, 12000 miles per year - excluding Tax and DMV ? (lease end return fee $350 to $450 to the bank finance).

63% residual and .00040 MF. Using your MSRP and sale price, I get a payment of $207/mo before tax.

Getting in that lower price range of 1500 and as high as the 2000 below Invoice range
will take getting more dealerships involved and maybe buying closer to the end of this month.

You will work for a top price here in NY. Supply is dwindling on 15 models so way all your factors.

Lower price -vs- waiting / choice of model/ colors left

So finally bought CRV EXL AWD in South central PA. I had a trade in but I would try to quote with and without trade in here. Obviously trade in save me taxes of about $700 so take that into consideration. MSRP was 30,275 with 880 Destination charge.

    Without Trade in
Selling price: 27,000 (incl. dest charge)
    Tax: 1620 (6%)
    Title/fees: 175
    Total OTD: 28795

Although I actally paid $25,389 OTD due to trade in equity I had.

If I had no trade in was it a fair deal?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Invoice (with destination) is $28,472 so better than "fair". Congrats!

What color did you get and how was your selection for the remaining 2015s?

Just purchased a 2015 Honda CR-V Touring model in Basque Red with grey interior. Vehicle included cargo mat, wheel locks, mud flaps and door guards. Very difficult color to find. Purchased from dealer in Culver City, California who said he located two in California, one in Costa Mesa and the other in San Diego. He got the one from Costa Mesa. Vehicle cost: $31,770 and cost of 8 year/100,000 mile Honda warranty was $1870. Dealer was excellent to deal with and they contacted me thru True Car price request.

Kona coffee. Each dealer I contacted had at least 7 to 10 on lot. Almost one in each color. I was surprised.

We got our CR-V last night in LA. Its a 2015 Black EX FWD. The base price was $23,910 and OTD worked out at $26,441. This included 1 year free car wash + CR-V all season floor Mats + Cargo Tray + Wheel Locks (not sure if this last item is a standard fixture) + 1 free oil change. We also decided to pay $2304 for extended warranty (7 yrs/100000 miles).

    Congratulations!
On the east coast EX FWD is available for $25,000 OTD. Assuming the "value" of the accessories is $400, you overpaid $1000.
FYI - Wheel Locks is not standard. It is a dealer accessory.

If you bought a new car instead of used because low rates and/or longer-terms loans kept the monthly payments more affordable, please email PR@edmunds.com by 9/11/15 to connect with a reporter.

Precisely @Stever...just trying to remove as much of the variables as possible and get an agreed on price and financing before hand, and then finally a minimum of guaranteed trade-in value for sales tax savings. I am well ware of the games and bait and switch tactics used by some dealers once you are in their showroom. I have emailed about a dozen dealers and am down to about $29k so far. Figure interest will peak by this weekend. Its funny, I normally know invoice pricing before I negotiate, but I have purely used this forum as my guide for a target price. I am estimating $28.5k as about $1500 below invoice...If anyone can forward invoice for both the EXL-NAV and Touring AWD that would be helpful :)

I'm curious, how did it turn out for you?

I would like input from acuraprice, stever and Brian on this.

I am a new buyer at DFW for Honda CRV-EXL and was reading this forum for sometime for the tips. I got a good internet price quote but when you visit the dealerships they just put the dealer addons and inflate the price by another 2k. Is there any strategy to buy without dealer addons since I am not interested in most of them but for windows tint.

Please let me know whether there are any dealer options that would make sense for north texas and is there a dealer in the metroplex who can sell the vehicle to me without dealer options.

    Thanks for your inputs

Very simply Call selling dealership and confirm vehicle and options. or tell each dealer I only buy vehicle w/ x options or I buy my model no add ons's. Any options you want are to your preference and liking.

I like to tint my windows less heat and sun in car.

When you ask for email quotes, you can tell the dealer that you are interested in the out the door price, including all taxes and fees. Get everything in writing via email before you get close to the F&I room.

    Avoid the unresponsive dealers.

If the dealer you decide to go with bait and switches you at the end, walk out and let 'em stew. They'll likely call, but in the meantime, go to the next dealer on your list. Or even the next brand.

If you want to play hardball you could report the bait and switcher to your local consumer protection agency or the AG's office. Or write a review and see what kind of public response you get.

This all assumes you have a useable car that you don't mind driving for another few weeks. And that you don't mind working a bit for a better deal.

I'm heading to a couple of dealers today and I have my defenses up (ergo my "hardball" comments). But I've done a short stint at retail and had friends with computer stores and truck accessory businesses. Car dealers aren't evil but like my friends, some will often stretch to pop a deal up a few hunderd bucks or more. The way to fight back is to refuse to pay. You don't have to be uncivil about it - it's just money. Just tell 'em thanks for their time and that you need to think about it.

So long as you haven't paid, you are in control.

If you have a transparent dealer who isn't playing games, then you may want to do business with them even though they may be a few hundred bucks higher than the store down the road. If you have a good sales experience, hopefully that attitude will translate over to the service area.

Dealers who want to stick you with stupid fees or expensive wax jobs, nitrogen in the tires, etc. are likely to stick you with higher costs when you go for service.

    /rant :)

    Agree with Brian and Stever,

I assume your looking at the EX-L FWD with no navigation? MSRP with dest $29,025 or more importantly invoice price of $27,301 (always work from invoice). To answer your question, yes, there is a strategy. Tell them you DON"T WANT ANY dealer adds, or to be nice, you "don't care to purchase those options" at which point they will try and convince you there's nothing they can do since their already installed. Once they are clear and understand your not interested in paying for the dealer adds, they will try and sell you the car anyway and will likely throw in the adds - they usually are willing to give away the pro-pack (splash guards, wheel locks, cargo tray) and tint because of the very low cost of those items, and they certainly won't let them stand in the way of losing a sale - truth is their all afraid of being beat out by another dealer that already has that stuff included in the deal - so they all add it. If push comes to shove, tell them to take it off! Make them unscrew the splash guards, remove the 4 locking lug nuts (wheel locks) and replace with originals, and lift the vinyl cargo tray out of the trunk area, then tell them that premium window tint film with full warranty is $95 at XYZ-CO, followed by "what grade film do you use to tint your CRV's Mr Dealer?

Bottom line, right now a really good drive out for a CRV-EX-L 2WD NO NAV in the DFW area is $28,000 which equates to right at a $26,000 selling price or $1,300 back of invoice. I think Brian and Steve would agree that anything $1,000 to $1,500 back of invoice is very solid, provided you aren't paying exorbitant doc fees ($150 or less in DFW area is fair). So your deal should break down give or take like below: Remember, stay firm on your drive out price to avoid getting ambushed...AKA...Pulling extra fees out of the air when doing paperwork - advertising fees, etc), and most of all......Be ready to walk if they can't meet your price, let the deal come to you!

Try GSM William Stalik up in Denton, he offered me a 2015 EXL FWD NO NAV off the truck with no dealer adds for $25,800 plus TT&L, and doc fees only - straight up, no ambush fees! He said any color but white for that price. That was mid August, best of luck!

2015 CRV EX-L FWD NO NAV
    Selling Price $26,000
    Tax 6.25% $1,625
    Total After Tax $27,625
    Lic & Reg $125
    Doc Fees $150
    Dealer Inv Tax $50
    DRIVE OUT $27,950

Also, failed to mention - the EXL trim comes with factory tint all the way around except for front two windows (driver and passenger side). Dealers will try and tell two windows tinted add up to $399

    2015 CRV dealer add prices:
    MSRP RETAIL
    Cargo Tray $114.00 $75.00
    Splash Guards $104.00 $62.00
    Wheel Locks $56.00 $32.00
    Tailgate Spoiler $296.00 $199.00
    Body Side Moldings $225.00 $149.00
    Exhaust Chrome Finisher $51.00 $36.00
All Season Floor Mats $143.00 $95.00

The dealer add-on MSRP pricing listed above is from the official Honda website and does not include installation. The RETAIL pricing next to it is from a secondary vendor OEM website which I listed above.

Bottom line, we all know many of these so called dealer added accessories are WAY overpriced, so do your homework before you go in. Body Side Moldings to protect from door dings, or a rear Tailgate Spoiler each require some expertise and labor time to install, and do come with warranty if the dealer installs them - so either ask for them to be installed at the dealer invoice price, or buy them yourself and contact a local body shop familiar with how to install these adds.

typo from above....Dealers will often omit the fact that the EX-L trim comes with factory tint on all windows except for the front two side windows, and therefore show $399 for a "full" window tint as an add-on price.

After getting my back up for nothing, I had two great test drive experiences over in El Paso. Didn't hit a Honda shop but both dealers were easy going, willing to deal and very pleasant to banter with.

Was surprised to hear that the Hyundai dealer there was the biggest one in Texas; you guys in BigD must prefer Japanese cars (and pickups).

    Keep us posted!

For reference, here's the price breakdown we just achieved on LX 2WD. Granted, by the end we weren't negotiating the individual fees, just the out-the-door price, and they filled in the rest how they saw fit:

    • $20,120 base price
    • $880 destination
    • $300 "Documentation Fee"
    • $4 "Tire Recycling"
    • $1,278 MD Sales tax (6%)
    • $295 title and registration ($275+20)
    Total: $22,877

Obviously destination, tax, title and registration is mandatory for them. Adding everything else together means the dealership kept $20,424 for the sale. According to Edmunds, the invoice price is $22,022, so that means we got $1,600 below invoice. Is that math right?

And that was all by telling them that the other dealership gave us $23,400 OTD on the AWD model, and we knew it was an epic deal but we'd rather pay less for the 2WD model even if it wasn't quite as good. Also, we ended up with the cargo tray which was in the car when we test drove it, and we got them to agree to keep it in there for free. Even if we had to pay for it, it would be worth it!
    Alancr -
I am in the market for CRV-EXL with AWD, in the Northern Virginia and do not mind extending my searches to MD as well so long as I can get a better deal. I know it's different trim but do you mind sharing which dealership offered you the best or recommend.

And for everyone else, I'm newb on this. What do you think is the OTD price for EXL AWD in the DC metro area. I reside in Northern Virginia. Not in any rush, I will be taking my time on this. I have been a silent reader of the forum and learned a lot already. I appreciate your inputs.

  • acurapriceacuraprice Member Posts: 91
Jexplorer, from what i've seen on here, and on another "CRV Prices Paid" blog, combined with what I understand about invoice pricing for the EX-L....I would say a very aggressive low price before TT&L and reasonable Doc Fees ($150-$200 max) would be exactly a $27,000 selling price for this car - here's how:

    Invoice for 2015 CRV EX-L $27,300
Additional Invoice for AWD $1,100 (roughly if memory serves, someone check me)
    Total invoice for car $28,400
A good low price deal (way lower than True Car, or Costco, or most average uninformed buyers) is -$1,000 to -$1,500 below invoice. These deals can be had if your patient, ready to walk out on some dealers, and are willing to work with (talk to and negotiate) several dealers.
So......If you take $1,400 off the invoice price, you get a very competitive Selling Price of $27,000!! Just be careful they don't ambush you on the back-end with high Doc Fees, or sky high interest rates, etc.

Good Luck, you can do it!!

2016 CRV's are almost here. September is typically the release month for the CRV, but you won't hear a word from these dealers about when - they will lie to you and say "sometime in late October". Drive around the back lot of your dealer and look around, many times the dealers "hide" these newer models to help clear out current year inventory. Also, use the new 2016 inventory against them when negotiating on a 2015. Say, if I buy a new 2015, it's already depreciated (1 year old car) since the models have arrived.

If anyone knows the release date, put it out here. I heard all Honda dealers get a "heads up" order sheet from the factory with a 2 week notice and "arrival date" of the cars coming their way. Honda website still showing the 2015 CRV.

@acuraprice - thank you for the detailed breakdown. I have the list of dealers that I found from this forum that I will be requesting quotes from. I don't see myself as a seasoned negotiator but the fact that I'm not in a hurry to get one may help a bit.

And yes, invoice for EXL AWD is $28472.

    Thanks

As a dealer, we were just able to start ordering builds. First production date for the 2016 CRV is the first week of October -- that means the dealers will usually see them arriving by the last week of October. As a dealer, there's no reason to lie and hide one in the back, you understand we get paid by selling cars, not hiding them.

Ha! You said there's "no reason" to lie? Should there ever be?? It's no wonder you guys have such an image problem! Kidding aside, many dealers routinely hide the first shipment of "new year" model cars to help clear all old inventory first. It's obvious you guys feel the pressure to be the first local Honda dealer to sell out of current year (old) inventory, otherwise your competitors who've already accomplished this task start discounting the new year models for what your trying to sell your older ones for, it's called price pressure!

I know, I know, you guys are selling them faster than you can order them, can't keep them in stock, and that's not how our business model works - we do it differently, etc.

No need to argue, but I do appreciate you sharing info on the 2016 CRV arrival dates, good "inside info".

    Thank You!!

Hello stever and others - As I have been reaching out to quite a few dealers here in the DMV area (DC MD Va) , I was offered for an EXL AWD $25,204, without destination and dealer proc fee of $300. I know it appears to be low than the invoice, but wanted to see if I'm in for a good deal. This was one of the internet offers without much going back n forth. Let me know how this looks. Thanks again.

I like adding destination to the "invoice" since it always gets tacked on, and I ignore the fees since they vary so much. I forget what @brian125 does. :)

So when you run TMV, you get a graphic like this:

So, we add $880 to your quote and come up with $26,084. And that's $2,388 below the "Edmunds" invoice.

That's nuts - my math must be off. :D Otherwise, better buy it!

    @hondaretailer

Any info on the changes for the 2016 CRV? I am curious to see if it will get Android Auto/Apple Carplay. I am assuming there won't be many other big changes. Maybe they will fix the vibration issue. How will pricing go? I would think it will go for close to MSRP until they clear out the 2015s.

I am trying to decide on whether to wait for a 2016 at the end of the year or get a 2015 now. Pricing maybe will get better on the 2015s once the 16s are announced. Last year Honda announced the 2015s at the end of September. Hopefully that is about the same time span.

When I negotiate any new vehicle I always add the destination charge to the vehicles Invoice price . Doing this makes it easier for dealers and me to come up with a final selling price excluding taxes, doc fee and dmv fees which pretty much round out your OTD pricing.

Atleast this deal dealer is telling you destination is not included . Some dealers knowingly don't mention it (destination ) and buyers are fooled at signing making there deal $880 more .

Thousands and thousands of new car buyers get burned on this dealer tactic the first time.

Yeah, your math is correct :) and I was surprised as first off when I saw the numbers, like I said just first offer. It's on the details that price does not include destn and other fees, and I am quoting it below:
"Sale Price excludes Honda destination and handling fee, excludes tax, federal/state fees, license, title, registration, emissions, $300.00 documentation/processing fee, $4.00 tire fee" . I am wondering if I can have any room to to negotiate since it is not end of month yet, and pricing is without any additional options. Dealer is one of your recommended in the area.

Who knows, but it's free to ask. Guess I'd want a breakdown of the "handling fee" too. That smells like a junk fee.
  • jexplorer15jexplorer15 Member Posts: 9
I will definitely find out about the handling fee. But another line from what I quoted above reads as such:

" MSRP excludes $880.00 Honda destination and handling fee " , which I assume they named it destination&handling.

I have a scheduled a test drive at a nearby dealer coz the one offering is a bit farther out, but not a deal breaker at all :)

Ah, $880 total for that would a good interpretation.

@adamr1 I don't have specific info on the 2016 CRV's yet. However, it is safe to say that pricing on the '16's will be close to MSRP until '15 ground stock is next to nothing. As with all Honda vehicles, prices are best after it's been out for a while.

Speaking of the "vibration", I've driven hundreds of CRV's and really only felt a harsh vibration on about five of them. Still no clue as to what causes it, but I've heard the CRV's built after July don't experience it.

Hi. I am in the market for a Honda CR-V LX AWD in the NYC metropolitan area. I was giving a quote of 23800, not including taxes and fees. Good price?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Invoice is $24,072 and TMV is $24,239. Those numbers include destination.

So yeah, good price. Don't know about the NYC market but folks down toward DC are getting better deals. May want to get some more quotes, and if you can wait until the end of the month, the deals should be a little bit better.

@stever - Thanks for the reply. can you be specific on "better deals" in DC?

It wasn't a deal afterall, after the fine prints and confirmation with dealer I found out that price was including military and recent college grad rebates of $1000 total. So, you pretty much add that amount if you don't qualify for either (like me  )

So, I am looking into the EX as well, just to see the price diff.
I received the following quote and would like to see if it's in the good deal territory:
    Dealers price = 23,822.00
    Destination = 880
    Invoice = 23,822.00 + 880 = 24702
    Doc Fee = 300

    After adding TTL and all:

    OTD = 26,781.12
Again this quote is for EX.

    Thanks!

@stever - Thanks for the reply. can you be specific on "better deals" in DC?

People in MD and parts of VA have reported $1,000 to $1,500 off invoice for CR-Vs. Some of the better deals have fallen at the end of the month when dealers are trying to meet quotas. Look for posts by @brian125 for some dealers to check - if you are willing to travel a bit, you could save some more.

@jexplorer15, now you seem to be around $600 off invoice. A good deal still but more "normal".

Since the dealer is playing those kind of games with their quotes though, I think I'd shop other dealers a lot harder now. Why reward them for getting your hopes up?

@stever - Again thanks for the reply. I went to another dealer this morning and he went immediately to 23200 OTD (CRV LX AWD). Should I just bid 22500 if I sign right then and there?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Sounds like a good plan to me. If that doesn't fly, you can mutter about going back to the other dealer (even if you don't intend to go there). Walking out sometimes jogs the dealer, and there's still some time left in the month for quota pressure to build on the dealer.

If inventory in your area is low, that's a wrinkle, but dealers tend to stock more "base" model cars.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

@stever - I went back to the dealer who previously indicated 23200 and he moved his offer up to 23700, I went to two other dealers - 23800 and 24000! I left all the dealers on good terms, we'll see if they call.

Heh, I wonder if they are reading this thread. :)

Hard to guess what's going on. Maybe Honda has extended the monthly quota a week or two to account for the '16s hitting the lots. Maybe all three dealers made their quotas thanks to the late Labor Day sales and aren't that hungry. Maybe Honda cut some "dealer cash" hood money. Maybe the VW mess has taken some competition away, but VW doesn't have an SUV that really competes with the CR-V.

Kind of a disturbing trend if you're a buyer.

Anyone else hitting the dealers this week?
