I appreciate the comments from all. Thank you very much. In my opinion, it a very shady practice for a Dealer to ask for a Deposit on a Car he cannot guarantee exists. I have NEVER heard of any business asking for a deposit on any product, if the product is not guaranteed to exist. Furthermore, on the http://www.e60.net (a forum just for BMW 5 Series Owners and Buyers), the posters said, "NO WAY" to that scenario. In fact, a couple of posters told horror stories about the time they actually did put a deposit down in the same situation as the scenario I described, and the car could not be secured. It took them months to get the charges reversed. They did get their money back, but after a long wait. Needless to say, they said, "never again."

All it takes is for a Dealer to do a couple of key strokes on the computer, locate the car, then see if he/she can get the car from that Dealer. If that is too much for a Dealer to do, then that says something about the Dealer.

Well, the good news I found a Dealer who said, let me locate the car, then let me see if the Dealer will trade the car, then if the Dealer trades the car, I will call you for a deposit. I said, "sounds great". Unfortunately, the other Dealer would not Trade. But, this Dealer told me a Dealer should never ask for a Deposit unless he/she can guarantee delivery. :)

thinking about buying a 525iat wagon RWD...

certified, grey/blk interior w/about 42k miles has premium package, heated seats (not that I need them in LA), new tires, CD a few minor scratches, otherwise good condition.

originally listed at 34k, now at $26k. supposedly it has been on the lot for a while.

what do you think I should pay? I have seen other 02's listed at 25 and 26k.

Need some advice on the following deal.

    2006 530i RWD
MSRP 52820 (premium pkg, cold weather pkg, nav) in So Cal
    SALE PRICE: 50400

    $2500 drive off
$660/month for 23 months (includes sales)
    12k miles/yr

Judge from other post, I think it is still slightly too high. Anyone think there is room for them to come down another $1000 off sale price?

    Thanks for any advice.
  • cmybimmergocmybimmergo Member Posts: 265
I'm not an expert on wagons (not that I'm an expert on anything else, either  ) but edmunds has a tmv of $27,438 for a certified 02 525it with 42k miles, auto, leather, heated seats, moonroof, garage opener, and wood trim, in clean condition. For outstanding condition, add another grand.

What do you want to pay? Make them an offer; they'll tell you if it's too low.

I was offered a 2006 530xi AWD with premium pk, sport pk, 18" wheels, cold weather pk, steptronic at, for $53,559. I'm making a one time payment and not finance.

I replied with $52,000. Is this good or not? Invoice is only $50,250.
  • tayl0rdtayl0rd Member Posts: 1,926
If you're paying all cash upfront, I wouldn't offer more than $1K over invoice. Matter of fact, I'd offer only $500 over invoice, knowing that they are going to ream you on doc fees, etc.
  • bdr127bdr127 Member Posts: 950
If you're paying all cash upfront, I wouldn't offer more than $1K over invoice.

I know this topic has been beaten to death on these boards, but what does paying cash have anything to do to it?
  • tayl0rdtayl0rd Member Posts: 1,926
Cash in hand is a "no risk" sale. The dealer doesn't have to bother with getting you financing, there's less add-ons/markups/hidden fees, less paperwork to shuffle, and less time spent with that customer. Time is money. The less time a salesperson spends with you, the less likely you are to be fleeced for extra cash.

When you go in with cash, you have all the power. The dealer wants to emancipate your cash from you and will do whatever it takes to make that happen. When financing is involved, there's the risk of you not even being approved and the dealer has to share profits with the bank. A cash sale means the dealer takes it all, which means less markup needed for them to turn a fat profit.

Hope that makes sense because it seems like I was rambling. :confuse:
  • bdr127bdr127 Member Posts: 950
From the dealer's point of view, a cash deal is less profit. There is no incentive for a dealer to do a cash deal... They'd rather spend a couple minutes submitting a credit application and have the customer finance to make a couple hundred bucks.

The whole "cash" thing is such a big myth in the car buying world....

    Hello,
    My car I've spec'd is:
    Sport pkg
    Prem Pkg
    Nav
    Cold Weather
    Prem Sound
    Satellit Radio
    Total as built (w/ 695 destination) = $57,140.
    Invoice = $52,085.

Dealer has said that for a 36 month lease, with 15,000 miles, he will give me a money factor of .001750
    Residual Value: 60%

What do you folks think of money factor and how much above invoice should I be willing to pay? (there are three dealers in my area, so I can be pretty aggressive w/ price negotiation.)

    Thank you! :D

Dealer has a 2006 525xi on the lot. I researched invoice price on Edmunds and xchecked with Consumer Reports and made an offer that was apx $500 over. Salesperson responded that policy is not to "sell below invoice". I'm wondering where the discrepancy may be. Here are the figures:

    Invoice: 40,855
    destination: 695
    Premium pkg: 1,820
    Auto trans: 1,210
    Cold Weather: 685
    Fold rear seat 430

    Total Inv. 45,695.

I offered $46,200. Any thoughts as to why salesperson says this is "under invoice"??
    Thanks
  • bmwchickbmwchick Member Posts: 5
I am no expert, but my guess is that your invoice number does not incorporate the MACO/advertising fee that your dealer has to pay to corporate, which varies by dealer. You can do a search on "MACO" on the this thread to pull up relevant discussions regarding the fee.
  • turnbowmturnbowm Member Posts: 76
The Edmunds invoice amount does NOT include MACO (varies by locale) or Training fees.
  • rainmaker2rainmaker2 Member Posts: 14
The MACO is $425, at least in California. Training fee is $180. I'm not sure what exactly a training fee is, but it seems to make up for the discrepancy between the dealer base invoice and the Edmunds base invoice. In other words, the Edmunds invoice I believe already has this $180 incorporated into its number. When you get to the dealer, their base invoice will be $180 less than what you see on Edmunds.

Adding the $425 to your number, you would arrive at $46,120. So your offer was $80 over invoice. That would be a total deal, especially on a 2006! I could see a dealer making that kind of a deal on a 2005 to move it off the lot, but not really for an in-demand 2006 model. I think $900-1000 over invoice is probably more realistic.

You will be able to get your car serviced at any BMW dealership regardless of where you buy it but I doubt that a dealership that is not getting credit for the sale would prep the car for delivery, at least not for free. It can't to hurt to ask though.

    Hello All,

I am considering purchasing a pre owned 2004 530i from a european car (not just BMWs) dealer. The car exterior is black with chrome trim around the windows. The interior has black leather(ette?) and titanium trim. The dealer specs list the car as having both the Premium and Sport packages. From my research, I've learned that the 2004 Premium package includes leather, maple wood trim and universal garage door opener. However, I could not find the usual garage door opener buttons and it definitely does not have maple wood trim. In addition, the Sport Package is supposed to include run flat tires. The car however, has a spare in the trunk. Is this normal for a car with run flats? Could the dealer be misrepresenting the car? Is there an easy way for me to verify that the car truly does have the Premium and Sport packages?

Finally, the dealer has the car listed for a little less than 39k and it has about 11500 miles on it. Is this a good deal for a 2004 530i? Even if it didn't have the Premium and Sport packages? What would be a fair price I should negotiate for?

Thanks a lot for your help.
  • cmybimmergocmybimmergo Member Posts: 265
You can get a true market value (TMV) on edmunds.com. Once you have that information, you can decide what you want to pay and make an offer. Based on what my dealer is selling 04 530s for, I think your dealer's price is reasonable, even without knowing what's on the car.

Speaking of which, you can find out what came on the car by the VIN. See whether you can get the dealer to run the #. If he won't, maybe you can get him to give you the # so you can do your own check. If he won't cooperate at all, run like hell (and find another dealer).
  • turnbowmturnbowm Member Posts: 76
If it's a U.S. car, it does NOT have the Premium or the Sport Package!

The SP-equipped 530i has Shadowline (matte black) trim, NOT chrome, around the windows. Also, the SP has seven-spoke 18x8.0 wheels with 245/40R-18 run-flats vs. five-spoke 17x7.5 wheels with 225/50R-17 all-season (non-RF) for the non-SP.

The lack of wood trim and universal garage door opener also indicates NO Premium Package.

You might want to copy the VIN and have the local BMW dealer check the database.

For pricing, check Edmund's TMV as already indicated.

I would avoid 2004 E60 as much as possible. This was the first year of production and is known for many issue. A nice low milage 2003 540 for much less than $39K would be my choice.

530XI 36 month/15,000 mile lease for $659 (Money factor of .0016) + local sales tax. Prem. Pack.; AT; Cold Weather with purchase price of $50,250.

    Is this a good deal?

I am new to this forum, and today i purchased a brand new 06 525 xi with the following options

    Auto Trans,
    Premium Pkg
    Cold Weather pkg
    Folding rear seats
    Metallic paint,
    Black leather seat.

Dealer listed the car at $49925

We got the car (final price) $46800 plus tax and dmv.
Is this a good price or was I ripped off?

    Thanks,

I'm looking to purchase this 2006 525xi immediately or as soon as i could find the deal im looking for.

I've been fortunate/lucky in the past receiving the deals i've wanted by calling many dealers by phone.
Local dealers never seem to cut the best deal.

I want to purchase this vehicle with vehicle with $9,425 in options. With base price, options, and delivery the car comes to $54,820 (list).

If somebody can lead me to a dealer to purchase $1,000 over the invoice of $51,180, i'm "good to go."

    Thanks
  • dadmommikemaddadmommikemad Member Posts: 5
That deal appears to be "quite" good. Your within hundreds of dollars from being a "great" deal. Post the dealers name, city and state. Im looking for a "real" similar deal.
    Thanks.
  • dadmommikemaddadmommikemad Member Posts: 5
Did u read the car sheet attached to the window?
It appears the car should retail @ $51,620 with the options u've described.
The invoice appears to be $47,265. The deal is better than g"ood," its "great."
Are u sure that is leather and not leatherette?
I left u another message prior to looking up the figures.
    Let me know the dealer.
Im looking for the same vehicle with slightly different equipment.
    Thanks

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.
To answer your question, no I did not read the sticker on the window, however, I priced the car on edmunds.com and BMW.com and they both came out to be MSRP:49,895.00
Premium packg (leather seats included in this packg),
    cold weather pkg,
    automatic trans,
    and folding rear seats,
    nothing else added.
The dealer (Park Ave BMW, in Rochelle Park, NJ) gave it to us for 46,800.00. I believe it's roughly 1000.00 over the invoice ($45,695.00), that's why I wondered if we could've done better, or if it's too good to be true? We still didn't pick it up yet.
Thank you for your help and interest..

From what I understand, there are currently very low inventory levels of the 5-series on dealers' lots. I guess they shut down the factories a couple months ago to re-tool them, so they're a little behind now in their supply. As a result, I think that dealers are currently being a little more stringent on their deals. They also said it's more difficult to do dealer trades since nobody wants to give up their 5-series.... Just FYI.

Has anyone undergone negotations for a 550 recently? I am looking in the Midwest.
  • dadmommikemaddadmommikemad Member Posts: 5
Thanks for the information on the dealership.
Called them today. They have a nice approach to sales. They seem to make the deals the customer wants. --- But --- BMW is coming out with the 2007 525xi and other 5 series models in less than 2 months.
You and I may as well wait for the newer model year. Even if you pay thousands more for the newer model year, it will make the worth of the car greater due to the car being one model year newer for future trade-in.
    Thanks

It looks pretty good... Is the acquisition fee included in that Gross Cap Cost? If so, it is a really good deal..

    I assume the $592/mo. is pre-tax?

I am looking to purchase a 550i in Texas. The best deal I can find is approx. 3-3.5% off the MSRP. Is this a good price?
If I were to opt for european delivery, can you negotiate for on the price of the vehicle?

My salesman ordered me a 2007 530xi on Monday (have production number and 112 status). The purchase order quotes me the 2006 selling price of 52969 (invoice plus $$1339) plus 5% MD tax plus $4 tire recycle fee plus $243 (tag, title, etc.) Out the door $55864.45. Because 2007 pricing is not out, in writing, he assured me if invoice is higher on 2007, the price will only increase that amount.

Jet Black, Auburn Leather, Manual, Cold Weather, Premium, Rear sunshade, fold down rear seats, PDC, Nav, Sirius.

I just got an email from a BMW dealer (who continues to send me spam!) about a program just announced by BMW....

All 2003 5-Series CPO cars not only will have the 2.9% interest rate, but BMWFS will also make your first two payments. I haven't talked to anyone, so I don't know the details; if that means you don't have to make a payment for 3 months, or if you just have two fewer months on the loan.

Just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone looking at a CPO E39... :)

I'm a few hundred miles from 50K on my 2003 X5 3.0. My lease expires June 1. If I buy it I'm thinking about getting the factory extended warranty (two years/50,000 miles)

    Is it worth it?
    How much are dealers quoting?

The big question: Should I buy this car at $27, 585 (residual). Car is in excellent condition.

Thanks in advance for your replies.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,284
Tough choice.. I'm not sure of the value of your car..

One thing in your favor... it looks like you will put the full 100K miles on, before the six year warranty runs out... that gives you full value.. If I were buying the warranty, I think I'd by the extended maintenance plan, as well..

It is too bad that you aren't at the end of your lease now.. It is possible that the dealer could buy your car at the end of the lease from BMW for less than your residual, CPO it, make a little profit, and sell it back to you for less than the cost of you buying the vehicle and the warranty yourself.. But, if you go over the 50K mark, you are out of luck....

What about your mileage? Are you substantially over your mileage allowance?

    kyfdx,

My mileage allowance is 45K for the 36 month lease. By the end of the lease period (June 1) I will be at or near 52K. If I turn it back to BMW I write a check for $1400 for over mileage (.20 per mile).

What does the extended maintenance plan cost? length?

Your sell back is interesting. Can a dealer make that determination in a quick turn around? I'd probably approach the dealer with this requested scenerio to see how it pencil's out. I hope I can trust the dealer. Hey, do you know if I HAVE to return the car to the original dealer ir can I work this deal with my preferred dealer? I have my car serviced at my preferred dealer and they're awesome. They seem to be about customer loyalty. They're also a Lithia dealer if that makes any difference.

    Thanks for your thoughts...
