add me as the newest owner, as of friday! i got the ls awd with 1sb, alloys, trailer pkg, body color bumpers and fog lights, and block heater as the options. i am very impressed so far. took it out of town for the weekend.

one problem tho--the baby's bottle already leaked on the back seat! i tried some bissel upholstery cleaner that didn't seem to work too well. any suggestions? also, while my window sticker didn't list an optional stereo, my nox seems to have the 6 disc changer, according to the little stereo supplement anyways. in those pics, the standard cd player and the optional 6 disc are shown. the 6 disc shows a button on the top left that says 1-6. does this indicate that i have the 6 disc? if so, how do i load it? i tried but i could only load 1 disc. maybe chevrolet changed something on the stereo but didn't change the little stereo brochure?

i like how the headlights turn on when you press unlock on the keyless fob. gas mileage was decent on my trip and i can only hope that it improves even more.

I have the stock base stereo and it has the 1-6 button as well. This does NOT necessarily mean you have the 6 CD changer. If you hit this buttin while listening to the radio, it will cycle through your 6 presets.

Good luck on cleaning the upholstery. No tips for that one. I know the manual has a good chapter on care and cleaning. Perhaps they might have a tip there.

After seeing this car in Feb at the car show, I decided it was the perfect vehicle for me..I love it!
Just got it yesterday and really enjoying all the things it does..LOVE the satellite radio, although I really didnt think I needed it, however, it is well worth having! We got the Salsa red with gray leather..almost settled for cloth seats but carrying 2 kids around in the back seat, leather made more sense, plus the leather is more comfortable.
This car exceeds my expectations, I was delighted to find a perfect place for my purse while driving..right on the floor in the center console thingy (a pet peeve in prior vehicles)
We ordered the Teflon/Simonize package cause we live on a dirt road and the dust is awful.
Hope it is worth the cost..anyone have any comments on this protection??

Dealer waxes, no matter what additive or miracle coating they are touting today, are rarely worth it.

Browse around Store Bought Waxes Part II (No Zaino Posts) for more (try a search in there for Teflon, for example).

    Congrats on the new 'Nox!

I had to rent a vehicle last week for a long trip to haul some things from NY to IN, and I picked an Equinox from the list of available vehicles. I was very impressed, to say the least, as I have never EVER enjoyed "trucks". I'm a certified "car guy" and have never really seen the point of SUV's, so I had an unexpectedly good experience. Undoubtedly I had a good impression mostly because this is in reality a "car" made to LOOK like a truck, but I will say this... If I ever decide I need a truck, I'll definitely go for a unit-body "tall car" before a body-on-frame vehicle.

Keeping in mind that I only had the vehicle for one day (an AWD-version LT), I'll give you some impressions (in no particular order, please forgive the stream-of-consciousness posting!):

-Decent room front and rear. This is obviously on the small side as SUV's go, but it had basically equivalent space front-to-rear as a "regular" wagon. It measured up a few inches longer, similarly wide, and a few inches taller inside as my mother's Subaru Legacy GT wagon.

-Seats are unexpectedly (for GM) firm and supportive. Not much side bolstering, but I don't much expect this thing will see much autocrossing. I'm used to GM seats that are too cushy and make my back hurt, but a 700mi trip left me feeling refreshed and back pain-free.

-Visibility out the rear is marginal, seats up OR down. Seats up, the backrests in the back block a large part of the window. Seats down, and it still feels like you're looking through a mail slot. The HUGE rear pillars are to blame here... And for someone who is tall of torso, the inside rearview mirror actually blocks a lot of the view FORWARD (and yes, I did adjust it). Weird.

-Body lean in turns, ride comfort, steering feel, brakes, power, and all that were very good. The greatest compliment I can give it (to me, at least) is to call it very "car-like". I liked the fact that something actually "happened" when I hit the gas... :)

-Excellent HVAC and cruise control, but why oh why do the window switches all have to be arrayed across the center console where you can't easily (or uneasily) lower the two front windows at the same time? Why not place them like they are on most other vehicles, with the switches all clumped together on the driver's door?

-Interior fitments were of surprisingly good quality, certainly unlike what I've seen on other recent GM vehicles (I rent about six vehicles per year, usually GM, and usually from Avis). The styling of the cockpit and the "soft touch" material on the vertical portion of the dash was particularly noteworthy, though the horizontal portion of the dash, in what appeared to be a single piece of flat-black plastic (if memory serves), was less so. This was basically of equivalent quality to the Mitsubishi vehicle I rented two months ago (also a small SUV, can't remember the name, but it was definitely forgettable if that tells you anything... Highlander, maybe?), and yes that's meant to be a compliment.

-Mileage on all-highway tanks was just under 25mpg, on undulating roads with about 750lbs of cargo in the back. (it also wasn't fully broken-in, with under 5000mi on the odo when I picked it up)

-Radio was very good, though the vehicle I rented appeared to have two CD's jammed in the player... Which would neither play nor eject.

-Huge center console was great for keeping all my junk squared away.

-This is highly subjective, but I thought it was a VERY good-looking vehicle. Not at all "girly" as small SUV's (aka- "cute utes") tend to be, and it was definitely better-looking than the absolutely hideous Mitsubishi I previously mentioned. The only thing I'd change is the regrettable choice of the silver taillamp cluster, which makes it look (to me) like it's aftermarket. Solid-red/amber taillights would make it look better, and not like it's done by some kid who wants his truck to look like a hopped-up Civic. Of course this is probably intentional, as the price range is probably more within reach of younger buyers than the larger vehicles on the market... And they are the ones who buy those Japanese-market-looking taillamps for their import tuner cars.

Well, that's all I can think of. Overall, a very nice-looking tall wagon that I can recommend to anyone in the market for such a vehicle. I applaud all of you who've purchased one of these.

Great review. Thanks for your detailed impressions. I agree with all your points.

One notable point about the black plastic dash...GM made it speckled low-gloss plastic specifically to reduce/eliminate the reflection in the windshield. So while it make not be the highest quality, it served a practical purpose.

Also interesting is that the designers made a conscious choice to make the upper parts of the dash/doors black and all the lower parts very light gray/beige. This is supposed to resemble night and day coming together...an anaology for a real equinox.

May sales - 8945. Looks like the Nox is starting to catch on. And with relatively little incentives.
  • jedurocherjedurocher Member Posts: 16
Picked up mine on the 29th. I love it. The first impression was poor. I really did not like the quality of the cloth seats. It made the vehicle look, as the terms used before, "Fisher Pricey." I went for the leather. I got the Equinox
FWD LT 1SD in galaxy silver metallic with leather seats and 17" wheels. I got just what I wanted for $21,295 after the $1,000 truck fest money.

    I like:

-I had a TrailBlazer and there is actually more room in the Equinox.
It is more family oriented, and with a new baby, easier to get her in and out of
    the vehicle.
-There is more power than most would expect.  I can still get around as
I need to and enter the freeway in Houston without worrying I will be run over
in the process.  I am not worried about the towing capacity, since I didn't
    even tow with my TrailBlazer.
-The leather interior with the new interior is absolutely spectacular.
I have to continue to tell the relatives that this vehicle is a lot less
expensive than it looks...and my car note is $50 less a month that before.
-My first tank of gas I got 23mpg, mostly highway driving.  It was $10
cheaper to fill the tank.  The smaller vehicle is already paying dividends.
    Don't Like:
-That the back headrests block the view, although the passenger mirror makes
up for some of the problems.
-The autoEQ feature on the radio.  Every time that I switch FM channels,
the EQ changes off the Custom choice.  Is there a way to stop this?
    It is freaking annoying!
-The location of the window buttons is annoying.
I washed and waxed the other day with Meguiar's Cleaner Wax.  I may try
the tech wax later.  I recommend, once a year, the Mcguiar's Clay bar
kit.  It gets rid of all residue and oxidation or contaminates and make the
    vehicle super shiny.
    Nothing more right now.

I was confused about the EQ too. I think I've found the solution. For the EQ settings to stick, you have to choose a pre-programmed setting with the far left button, then store your radio station in a preset button by holding it down until you hear a beep. I believe that you're only allowed ONE custom setting. So when you change the custom EQ settings, all the preset stations that are set to Custom will take on the new custom setting. Try loading a pre-programmed EQ setting (Pop, Jazz, Rock, etc.) into a station preset...this should stick regardless of other EQ setting you attribute to other station presets.

My first tank of gass only gave me 15.5 mpg. The second tank was better at 18.5 mpg. I drive about a 70/30 mix of HWY and City driving. I'm dissappointed with the MPG results. I was thinking that maybe the car needed to broken in before truly accurate MPG stats set in, but I've read in the forum that others are getting in the low 20s on their first tank. What gives?
  • jedurocherjedurocher Member Posts: 16
I got the mileage I received on a mostly highway drive. (I went 100 miles from home to get what I wanted.) My city driving has been much worse. I believe, even though Chevrolet does not say it, but physics say that you will probably get less milage than the sticker if you drive AWD.
  • johng1johng1 Member Posts: 18
I called Chevy Customer Service at 1-800-222-102 to request an Equinox brochure. Just recieved it in the mail. This 12-page brochure is breathtaking with gorgeous fold out pages. It also comes with an interactive CD about the Equinox. This is a must for any owner.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Some people get good mileage right from the start, but most of us find it takes several thousand miles before the mpg approaches the EPA estimates. I wouldn't worry about it for a while.

Buying the Equinox but, I keep hearing bad things about the 3.4L V6. It seems that this engine has had problems with reliability/longevity. Can someone tell me if it's worth taking a chance with the 3.4L engine?
  • mr_botsmr_bots Member Posts: 236
Overall its a tried and true engine, it has had some problems with head gaskets in the past, but that was supposably fixed in 2003. I wouldn't worry about the engine, just keep an eye on your coolant level once it gets around 70K miles on it and if it is low have your head gasket checked.
  • shamgottishamgotti Member Posts: 10
Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I'll be able to test drive one monday.
  • mr_botsmr_bots Member Posts: 236
I think I got that wrong, instead of the head gasket its the intake manifold gasket. Sorry for my mistake.
  • jedurocherjedurocher Member Posts: 16
What other warning signs should one look for to make sure that you are not having problems with this.
  • cudaalcudaal Member Posts: 34
congrats on the new Nox. think again about XM though, it require MONTHLY payments and end up costing U $$$! Last time I checked Radio IS Free.

    Best.
  • mr_botsmr_bots Member Posts: 236
I think that the intake manifold gasket is the only problem that was commonly experience on GM 60 degree V6 (2.8, 3.1, 3.4) and that was supposed to be fixed for 2003. Just keep an eye on your fluids and if anything is low except for oil, you have a leak and should have a mechanic check it out.
  • atlgaxtatlgaxt Member Posts: 501
I think in general this is a tried and true engine, since coming out in the 2.8 litre version in the original X cars in about 1980 or so. I just hope that building the engine in China does not create teething issues from a manufacturing standpoint.
  • dan165dan165 Member Posts: 653
Have not been on in a while but lots of new owners and 5-star crash ratings are all very good news. Looks like GM has a hit here.

Gas mileage for those who are disappointed often takes many tank fulls to get up to par. I think I had about 3000 kms on my Grand Prix before I finally got over 30 mpgs.

Drove to Ottawa this week and back, saw about 4 Equinoxes along the way, I'm guessing they are selling well up here also.

i'm going on 2 weeks now with my nox. what a great vehicle! i have the awd ls, 1sb. i did find another feature the other day that i didn't even know it had, an active security system. i needed to retrieve something from inside. it was locked but the windows were half way down so i reached in, unlocked the doors, and opened it. it gave a few warning beeps with the security light flashing, then the horn honked and lights flashed for about 2 minutes.

i bought the first nox in wyoming. i've only seen one other so far.

    likes:

styling, size, interior space, stereo, power (even though i agree the 3500 would have been a better engine), versatility, comfort...

    two dislikes:

those darn window buttons on the center console! i constantly find myself trying to find the buttons on the door where they belong! and why doesn't the RAP include the windows with the radio??? on my other gm cars both were retained after turning the key off.

Two months and the review talks about a saftey option you still can't get: SAC. I hope the Highway Inst. for Safety grags them over the coals for that. Just like the Vue, the Nox will fail side impact if it not used on their test. Why should there be such an issue with this when the same option is available on the Vue now. What could be different? A SAC bag being 6 inches longer?
  • pluto5pluto5 Member Posts: 618
Ford proved that safety doesn't sell so why should GM push the extra airbags? Only when the competition forces the issue will GM go along.
  • caleroscaleros Member Posts: 1
It'll be 3 weeks since I purchased my equinox (LT AWD) and overall I think this SUV is great. I love the quiet, smooth ride in the highway. Steering is a super soft, but I think I'm getting used to it now. Radio sounds pretty decent and exterior design is beautiful.

My only complaint is the interior cloth. The light gray color can get easily soiled and to clean it can get frustrating.

But all in all, I'm pretty happy with my purchase.
  • joey2brixjoey2brix Member Posts: 463
Go on a Volvo board and safety's all they talk about. Insurance rates will be affected by Highway Institute results(since the insurance companies own them) and their results get published by the media. Anyway it's an advertised option that you can't get. The review tries to make GM look good by saying it's an option in both LS and LT trim levels. False advertising IMO.
  • jedurocherjedurocher Member Posts: 16
    Caleros,

The cloth seats are the main reason I almost did not buy the Nox. I love the leather. The vehicle looks so much more expensive than it is. I also love the ride and the space. I ahd a Trailblazer that had that weird steering too, so I was used to that.

    Congratulations on your new "kid!"

I have a 3 year prepay that took my monthly cost to less than $8. TV is free and dial up is cheaper than cable modem. I have Dishnetwork and a Charter 3.5 Mb cable modem. Guess I'm just rich.
  • vuefor2vuefor2 Member Posts: 490
Wow, lots of new buyers here. Glad to see the "NOX" is selling well. I am not surprised though, it's a very nice SUV.

I heard a Pontiac version is on the way also. Does anyone know anything about that??
  • mr_botsmr_bots Member Posts: 236
For people that own an Equinox are you finding the seats in the Equinox comfortable? I drove one on the lot, but a 5 minute test drive is not enough time to establish how your back will feel after sitting in it for several hours when traveling. I did notice that back seat was extremely flat and very firm. Has anyone tested the comfort of the back seat by sitting in it for a couple hours?
  • jerrywimerjerrywimer Member Posts: 588
The rear seats were one of the things that pushed me to choose the Malibu LT over the Equinox when I was shopping for my wife's car (there were a few others- the 'nox is an excellent vehicle, but the Malibu seems light years better for our needs). Anyway, the Malibu's rear seats seemed to be contoured much better, and well-suited to long trips for passengers. Those firm, flat rear seats in the Equinox were already a little uncomfortable for me when I sat in them, so I could only imagine 2 hours in one.

On the other hand, even though the Malibu has plenty of legroom for most people in the rear, I really loved the sliding adjustment on the 'nox, which gave cavernous room.
  • johng1johng1 Member Posts: 18
I've noticed the front bucket seats don't cradle me in as much as my Explorer did. There seems to be quite a bit of body roll on turns which is taking its toll on my lower back. I guess you can say it feels like your sitting ON the seats, not IN them. I hear that the seats will soften up with time and start comforming more.
  • nancys1nancys1 Member Posts: 21
I have had my Nox for 2 weeks now, the seats are VERY comfortable, especially the driver seat with all the adjustments it has. Perhaps the leather has something to do with it..
  • mr_botsmr_bots Member Posts: 236
I'll be getting a new vehicle before August and I had it narrowed down to the Equinox and the Malibu. It looks like the Malibu won out. From the outside the Equinox is absolutely stunning and beats the exterior of the Malibu hands down, but I feel GM could have done better on the interior and in available features. It should have borrowed more from the Malibu, the 3500 V6, power pedals, a telescopic steering wheel, driver lumbar adjustment on all models, the Driver Info Center, remote start, and a more comfortable rear seat. Also price is a major factor, and I'm getting a great deal on the Malibu, the quote I got on the Malibu is about $6500 lower than the quote I got on the Equinox and the Malibu has more equipment and a better engine.
  • jerrywimerjerrywimer Member Posts: 588
That's pretty much how I saw it too. I was back and forth between the two cars at the dealership. The salesman pretty much stated that for the same money I could either get a nearly fully loaded Malibu LT sedan (only minus OnStar) or an Equinox LS AWD (with not a whole lot extra added). I could have stepped up to an LT Equinox, but that would have added quite a bit more money, and while I loved the exterior of the 'nox LT's, the interiors still need more work.

On the other hand, now that I've owned this Malibu for over a month, the exterior styling is growing on me more. The bu's front end was especially ugly to me when I first started looking, but now it's actually starting to look acceptable, and I trust with time it'll maybe even feel a bit handsome. (It already looks decent compared to most of the similar priced competitors, ^^ ).

Some things on the 'nox interior besides the seats that really turned me off-
    * mostly hard plastic surfaces to the dash, vs. the nicer soft touch materials in the bu
    * (this one REALLY surprised me) while fooling around with the tilt wheel mechanism, I discovered that the plastic around the steering column is extremely flimsy. It basically felt like it would fall off in no time.
    * tiny storage area inside the center console. Now before anyone complains, I do realize that there's a large area underneath, and women especially probably love that when they're driving, to put their purses into. But my wife at least, likes to have her purse totally hidden when she leaves it in the car, and I personally like having anything I leave in the car out of sight. I think a larger enclosed center console would have been better.
    * low single cupholder for driver / front-seat passenger. (yes, I realize there's a flip-out second cupholder in that tiny center console, but to me that's there for the occasions when there are 2 people in front with drinks, which is why it is a flip-out design in the first place. Even so, the flip out isn't all that hot for some sizes of cups.)
    * Centrally located power window switches for front seats. This reaks of cost-cutting, imo. GM locates them in this area on cheaper vehicles to save a few bucks on an extra control on the passenger side. Might not be so bad, but the location doesn't fall naturally to hand when I'm driving and want to roll a window up or down.

As I've said, there are some notable highpoints for the 'nox, but they weren't enough to overcome the bu's, imo. The first was exterior styling- the Equinox is a sharply styled vehicle, especially with the painted bumpers and foglights. Another would be rear passenger space. And while I agree with a few others here that the rear shock tower plastic treatment seems to intrude a bit into the hauling area, the addition of the multi-position tray seems to offset that a bit, and the overall storage area is fairly sizable anyway. Lastly, I wasn't expecting the 3400 engine to have such a pleasant exhaust note as it does- Chevy did a good job of keeping the relatively old engine from seeming that old in this new vehicle, and it definitely has plenty of git-up-n-go. Despite that the 3500 as used in the Bu' has MUCH more impressive power and refinement, and probably would have been even better in the nox than the 3400, the 3400 is more than capable of getting the job done.
  • johng1johng1 Member Posts: 18
I love the interior of the Equinox, even better than the exterior. I guess it just depends on what people's tastes are. I just love the clean lines, two-tone dash and uncluttered arrangement. I have leather seats and this contributes a great deal to the rich look inside.

I checked out the Malibu Maxx, and it's a great looking car all the way around. I like the Nox because it's more like and SUV, looks bigger and heavier, and is a bit higher off the ground.

Congratulations on your Maxx. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

By the way, I agree that the power window buttons are in a horrible place. I don't think I'll ever get used to it.
  • johng1johng1 Member Posts: 18
One more thing. Does anyone know if the rear headrests from the Maxx would fit on the backseat of the Nox. This would solve the "big headreast" problem on the Nox which obstructs the rear view.
  • shamgottishamgotti Member Posts: 10
I bought this vehicle 10 june, and so far so good. It is black with grey leather interior. I like this vehicle more than the rav4 i test drove because of size and v6 power. toyota had it beat by far in terms of interior material quality.
likes-v6 power, leather seats, exterior styling, stereo system
dislikes-interior material quality(especially the dashboard) and overly firm seats.
overall i am happy with my purchase.
Anybody notice that there is no redline indicator on the tachometer? And where is the door ajar indicator ?
  • nancys1nancys1 Member Posts: 21
I have to agree the Nox needs a "door ajar" indicator..I have to get out of the car almost every time I go somewhere because at least one door is not shut firmly..a big nuisance!!

I have had my new equinox for two weeks now and would like to know if anyone has had a problem with excessive tire noise on cement surfaced highways. VERY loud sound. Almost like a jet taking off. Continuous and very annoying for sure. We have 17 inch wheels. Also seems like air noise from the front window. I have to really have my satellite radio cranked loud to hear over the roar. Any comments would be appreciated.
  • johng1johng1 Member Posts: 18
I have 17" wheels too, but I've nver noticed the road noise to be out of the ordinary (I will now that you mention it, thank you very much :)

This is not the answer you're looking for, but the Auto Volume feature on the radio automatically turns the radio up to compensate for road/wind noise.
  • shamgottishamgotti Member Posts: 10
Haven't noticed excessive road noise on my equinox, but my previous vehicle was a 2003 toyota corolla. does your vehicle have the bridgestone tires?
  • jerrywimerjerrywimer Member Posts: 588
Our '04 Malibu is the same way on concrete surfaced roadways, especially those with that grooving in it. On all other road surfaces, it's quiet as can be. I'm fairly sure it's mostly related to the tires and tread. My previous 1997 'bu was the same way with the Bridgestone Potenza tires we replaced the original Firestones with. (FWIW, the Firestones were great on the grooved concrete, but wore out super fast.)

As for the wind noise, this is the first I've seen of anyone mentioning the issue with an Equinox, but the Trailblazer has a fairly large base of owners reporting similar problems. Mostly, it seems due to either misalignment of doors, or just simple weatherstripping issues (those can usually be fixed btw, once you isolate the exact area where air is coming in and making the noise- search the "Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Oldsmobile Bravada" forum for "wind noise" and you should find at least one reference to a fix that works in this sort of case. (It involves padding the weatherstripping in the area where the leak is).
  • logic1logic1 Member Posts: 2,433
One white, one Dark Grey, one Silver. The styling is quite striking. I usually pass little SUVs with out noticing. The Noxes definitely caught my eye.

Mecedes Benz has always placed the power window controls in the center. Saturn does as well, and the Nox/Vue link is probably why they are on the center in the Nox.

Companies like Mercedes sell more cars with manuals than automatic. If you drive a manual, you prefer controls in the center because your right hand is working the shifter in the center anyway. I am not sure why Saturn chose to mount the controls in the center, but it is not necessarily to save money.
  • jedurocherjedurocher Member Posts: 16
I have had that problem with every car that I own when I drive on cement. There is a HUGE difference between that and asphalt. One thing that I understand would help is getting the undercoating spray in the wheel wells. This is similar to the bedliner spray and supposedly helps with road noise. Anyone else heard this?

  • dan165dan165 Member Posts: 653
I would thing center mounted window controls would be cheaper to put in that door mounted ones. I'm sure it won't take long to get used to.
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
Most of thier engines pair up only with automatics.
Nox's do stand out in the crowd though. No one seems to be advertising them in Atlanta this week. They must be rare on the lots.
