    Hi everyone,

Does anybody know if there is a way to change the blower settings when using remote start? I notice that whenever I use remote start the blower runs at full speed until I insert and turn the key. I would like to shut this feature off if possible, but I cant seem to find any info on how.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You must have LT model with auto hvac system, correct?

The remote start feature on that model is even fancier than what you get on base or LS model with remote start because when the remote start mode is initiated the control head checks the inside temperature of the vehicle and then runs the system in one of 3 modes to optimally cool or heat it. When you turn the key the system transitions from this auto start or "AS" mode to whatever your last settings were.

NO, you cannot change this operation.

If you are experiencing some discomfort I would be interested in getting more details because I will pass them back to interested parties.

A few details on fan speed.......

Under most conditions you will find that the blower motor is running at 75% speed during this special "AS" mode. The fan in this vehicle is so powerful it might just seem like it is running at full blast. Only at mild temperatures inside vehicle (70's) will the fan run slower.
    ================
I am still waiting for someone to ask about the rear defog (all models) and heated mirror (LT only) interaction with remote start. Probably needs to get a little colder for those questions to start (LOL)
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
wow, e2helper; that is a neat feature. But one clarification if you would: does this auto hvac system turn on your a/c or heat (when one uses the remote starter) even when the fan setting is set to the off position??
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
My original post was actually much more detailed but I didn't want to get into trouble so I detuned it a bit ;)

    anyways specific to your question......

If you have an auto HVAC system (LT model). It will go into these special remote start modes even if you had the HVAC system (including the fan speed switch) turned off - it is REALLY smart (LOL)

If you have the non-auto HVAC system (base or LS model) the HVAC system will operate in the mode that the owner last left it in (temperature, A/C and fan speed). So as long as you remember this you will get pretty much same benefit of remote start that LT owner has.

Now that you got me started......a few more items.

First of all on the Rear Defog operation with remote start. It works same for either type of HVAC system.

For the 2004 model year when the outside air temperature is detected at <36 deg F when you activate remote start your vehicle rear defogger will automatically be turned on. On LT model your heated mirrors will also turn on.

When you put key in ignition and turn ON (transition from remote start to normal running) then the rear defogger will turn off and you will need to turn it back on if you still need rear defogger operating.

For the 2005 model year the temperature that the remote start system turns on rear defogger was increased to <60 deg F. There is no way for a 2004 model to have that changed :(

At this time heated seats DO NOT turn on automatically with remote start (sorry).

This thread just prompted a dumb question on my part:

IOW, it's OK to leave the fan speed control in one of the "on" positions (on the LS) so that the system will be pumping out warm air after a remote start?

The reason I ask is that when I first learned to drive (several million years ago) it was drummed into me (by my driver ed teacher) that you should always have all electrical accessories turned off at startup in order to avoid excessive battery drain. I also remember something about voltage regulators not being able to protect electrical compononents from voltage spikes during startup...

Do I need to update my thinking on this?
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Electronics in a vehicle are tested to be able to withstand many typical electrical transients. If we required customers to remember to turn everything off each time they started the vehicle it would be big dissatisfier to customer and big impact to warranty so it is in best interest for everyone for vehicle to be able to handle it.

This is not to say stuff can't happen under unusual conditions (like your vehicle getting struck by lightening).

You will still find that many things automatically shut themselves off when you start vehicle due to the way they are "power moded". Helps allow all available power to be used to turn the starter motor on the vehicle. Give it a try on your LS, you will see that the automatic headlights turn off and HVAC blower shuts off when you go into crank.

e2helper it's nice to have you around. Your participation in this forum is most helpful and reassuring to the rest of us. If you're participating on your own initiative, that's great. If you're participating because GM/Chevrolet supports your participation, that too is great.

I'm sure I'm speaking for many of us when I say again,"it's nice to have you around".
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Thanks for appreciation. Nope, no official support whatsoever. Heck, GM might even discourage it (LOL). You can bet that many of your posts however do go to interested parties when you bring up stuff I know people are interested in.

Just me interested in helping out our customers where I can. I have worked on the development of this car for so long that I quite enjoy being able to share knowledge I have on it.

I also am involved in the Pontiac G6 and check that forum on Edmunds too but not very much activity yet - at least from a true customer/owner perspective like on these Malibu/Maxx boards. I don't even know that a true owner has posted there yet (other than an Oprah show participant). Since that vehicle has only been in the market about 6 weeks it will take some time I guess. Hope they are as vocal as you folk :)
  • beedublubeedublu Member Posts: 236
Ditto that! This is so cool, being able to find all this info beyond what the owner's manual tells you. And beyond what the dealer's service department apparently knows. I, too, appreciate this resource provided by Edmunds and e2helper.

Driving home today I realized how impressive the Maxx is. On the transition ramp between two freeways I drive everyday, there is a huge bump right before going into the curve. In my truck, I have to slow down to 30, or the rear end will hop out -- very scary the first time it happened. In my friends 2003 Maxima, I could go faster than in my truck, but the rear still leaped to the left after hitting the bump. Before buying my Maxx, I drove my fathers 2002 525i for a few months. The bump doesn't cause the rear to hop very much on the BMW, but you still feel and really hear it. In the Maxx, the bump is totally absorbed. The rear stays planted, and there is a slight "thump". I take the ramp at higher speeds every time trying to get some kind of reaction, but so far, nothing. My Chevy does something better than a BMW -- for less than half the price!

Overall, I am much more comfortable driving the Maxx than the 525i. The seats are higher, the controls are easier to operate and work better, and the Epsilon chassis is amazing. If Chevy could just fix the steering feel, this car would be 100% better than the BMW.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, I have the LT model. It's been great for the most part, other than some issues with the paint. It's not so much the discomfort, as I am old fashioned in that when it is cold, I do not turn the heat up until the car reaches close to operating temp. It's a car over from when cars and lubricants weren't made as well as they are today.

The only thing I do dislike is the digital temp setting. I much prefer a dial or a lever, as it allows you to quickly set the temp. For example, in moderately warm days, setting the AC temp to about 68-72 is most comfortable to me. So once the sun goes down, if you dont want the a/c but want fresh air, now warm air starts coming in. So you have to hold the button in while driving, and the gauge changes slowly, about 1 sec per degree. So if you have a wide range, it takes a while, instead of a second with a dial.

It's a minor thing that probably only bothers me anyway.....
  • beedublubeedublu Member Posts: 236
No, that doesn't bother just you. The auto temp control system used to drive me nuts in the '95 T-Bird that I traded in on my Maxx, and it's one reason I decided to forego the LT in favor of the LS. (I really would have liked those heated leather seats). :-)

But one thing that impresses me a lot about this car is how quickly the heater warms up! After only about 1 to 1 1/2 miles there's actually warm air, both at the floor and windshield outlets. I've never had a car with such a quick warmup.

Between that and the traction control, remote start and front drive -- I'm actually looking forward to an upstate NY winter with this car.

Thanks to you for participating in our forum--you are a great help to many people. I hope the G6 owners enjoy their cars as much as we MAXX people do! By the way, I saw a commercial today advertising a Jaguar model with a "longer wheel base"--I got a chuckle thinking about our MAXX.

Well, after months of looking, researching, test driving, etc., I think we are finally ready to make a decision. We are looking at this as a third family car, driven primarily by a relatively new teen driver. I wanted something with side curtain airbags, so we have been looking at Rav4s, Hyundai Tucson, and the Equinox. When we were testing the Equinox today, we looked at the Maxx. It really fits the bill in terms of what we are looking for. It was much roomier than any of the others we have looked at. My only concern, and I'm hoping someone here can address this, is the safety factor. I know that it has the side curtain airbags. I've looked at two sites, iihs and nhtsa. The iihs gives it mostly "good" ratings with a few "acceptable" ratings. The nhtsa gives it 4 stars rather than 5 due to what appears to be an issue "related to the possibility of torso injury to the driver." My daughter really has her heart set on this car and the price seems good...$16,000 for a black LS with the 1SB package. Ideally, we'd love to make this decision in the next two days. It has been great reading this board. Out of all the cars I've looked into, it seems as though the owners on this board are by far the most satisfied than any of the other boards I've looked at. I look forward to any input you all might have for me.
  • tra2883tra2883 Member Posts: 79
Is the Maxx you're looking at a 2004 or 2005 model? If it's a 2005, and it does have the side curtain airbags, then it also has the thorax bags built into the seats. I checked the safety ratings on the Malibu before I bought mine, and I'm confident that I made a smart choice and picked a safe and solid vehicle.
  • crhcrh Member Posts: 29
It is a 2004. Thank you for the insight. I am sure it will be fine. It felt more solid than the small SUVs we were looking at.
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
wise choice. i think the equinox was junky. poor ergonomics, and brutal to see out of.
As for the heater: it is amazing how fast warm air will come out on a cold day. I've never seen a car warm up so fast.
  • crhcrh Member Posts: 29
Thanks. I was bothered by all the blind spots in the Equinox and I kept hearing a rattle in the back as well. I did make a comment about the heater on the Maxx when we were driving it today. Once I get over the fact that for so many months I have keyed in on safety crash test ratings and now am apparently on my way out the door to buy a car that hasn't tested as well as some others I'll be fine. Frankly, I just hate the thought of my teenaged daughter driving anything less safe than a hummer!
  • maxx4memaxx4me Member Posts: 1,340
especially with the 50 car crash going on right now north of Baltimore.....unbelievable.
While the Maxx isn't a Civic, it will enable your teenage daughter to steer out of accidents, unlike every SUV on the market. There is a lot to be said for smaller cars' maneuverability and accident avoidance

e2helper, I have a quick question. It appears as if the top 4 lines of my rear defroster don't work. It's not a huge problem, as I don't really need them to work to still be able to see out the rear window, but I would like it to work just the same. What will the dealer have to do to fix it? If it's simple, I'll get it done when I do my oil change, but if it's major, maybe I wouldn't bother to fix it. Thanks for your help, and everything that you contribute to the board. It's great having someone on the "inside" to talk to!
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
I am not to familiar with any problems with the glass but what the dealer would do is first confirm that the lines are not working with some type of tester and then I think their only "fix" would be to replace the glass.

I am not sure how major they consider replacing a rear glass.

Sorry you are having this problem, however since it is getting into colder weather I think it would be good to mention it to them when you are doing the oil change.
  • crhcrh Member Posts: 29
We bought it! We got a black LS with the 1SB package. The MSRP was 23150. We paid $16150, and by the time we added taxes, tags, etc, we were out the door for $17K and change. It was a great buying experience. Our daughter is thrilled, and we're really happy. Thanks for all the great input. While I really only posted today, I've been reading this board for a few months now and it has been really helpful.

Six months, 17,500 miles & going strong. Still, none of the problems others seem to have relating to steering. Have gotten quite used to the steering on this vehicle & now, when I drive my Dakota p/u it feels like driving a vehicle with manual steering.

Still getting great mileage; in my trip this week to Quebec averaged between 29 and 30. Finally saw my first Maxx in Quebec on this trip. I have used up my five free oil changes dealer gave me when I bought the vehicle; I wonder when they are going to try to sell me service other than regular oil changes. Any recommendations out there on when any kind of maintenance is required, other than oil changes and tire rotations?
  • madmadammadmadam Member Posts: 55
Congratulations! I'm quite certain you (and your daughter) will be very happy with your black MAXX. We've had ours (Light Driftwood) for 3 months and could not be happier. It feels very solid on the road--it has plenty of zip and maneuvers very well. My daugher is almost 15 and is looking forward to learning to drive in our MAXX.
  • beedublubeedublu Member Posts: 236
Congrats...if it offers any additional peace of mind, I wouldn't be too concerned about the 04's lack of side thorax airbags. From what I understand, the side curtain (roof-mounted) airbags are actually more important than the thorax-level (seat-mounted) airbags, since head injuries are usually more serious.

I have the same car as you, except in silver. You and your daughter will love it...so stable on the highway, even in blinding rainstorms and crosswinds. I've had mine just two months and it's been a pleasure to drive!

I recently had the oil in my MAXX changed at a Jiffy Lub shop. They did not know how to reset the Oil Used Information on the car computer. Can anyone tell me if the reseting back to 100% is something that either I or Jiffy Lub can do? It is not convenient for me to have it done at the Chevy Dealer so I would rather take it to a shop or do it myself. I am sure other people in the board will want to know how to do it.

    Thanks.
  • jerrywimerjerrywimer Member Posts: 588
I don't know if all Malibus have the DIC in them or not, but assuming they do, you just cycle through the items in the DIC until you see the Oil Life display, then press and hold the Enter button until it resets.

This is one of the easiest methods I've seen on a GM vehicle yet, and certainly beats the method I had to use on my non-DIC equipped Chevy Trailblazer (something convoluted- like with engine off, turn key to run position, press and release throttle 3 times in five seconds, watch for light on dash to wink provocatively, etc.. LOL).
  • rferdrferd Member Posts: 28
I tried the reseting of the Oil Life as you recommend but it does not zero in. It is like the Miles Left that can not be reset.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
You are correct the FUEL RANGE cannot be reset

The trick with the Malibu DIC is that reseting of
Oil Life is NOT done using the same INFO item that displays the OIL LIFE %.

What you need to do is push the MENU button and the first item you will see is OIL-LIFE RESET. You then press the ENTER button and it will respond back ACKNOWLEDGED.

    You can do this yourself.
  • tra2883tra2883 Member Posts: 79
While we're on the topic of oil changes, is it best to change the oil every 3K miles, or should I listen to the DIC and change it when it tells me I need it? In all my previous cars, I've changed it ever 3,000. In my Malibu, I had it changed at 1,500, then again at 3K, and I was planning to have it done again at 6K, and would follow a 3K schedule from here on out... Any thoughts?
  • rferdrferd Member Posts: 28
Thanks e2helper. Now that you mention it, I seem to remember that I read something about that on the Owner's Manual. I will try it this afternoon.

    Thanks again.

There are many schools of thought on oil changes. The following site from cars.com may give you some perspective:
    http://www.cars.com/carsapp/national/?srv=parser&act=display&- amp;- amp;tf=/advice/caradviser/oil_change.tmpl

My own routine for many years has been to change around 5,000 miles, but that's based on my driving circumstances.

a mileage update. on my 3rd tank with a ton of city driving and some long red lights! i got 26 mpg. i think thats great considering. and i am starting to also step on it a few times and the power is really there when you need it. the shifting seems a little better, the 3rd to 4th thing so im not worried. theres really nothing i dont like about this car! oh and im not so sure about keeping xm now...im kinda tired of it already...anyone else feel this? i have 2+ months left so im in no rush to decide but it looks like maybe not at this point...
  • e2helper, Thanks for info on how remote start works (I have 2004 Maxx LS 1SB). I was used to setting fan, temp, mode before parking car for night, when anticipating a remote start on cold mornings. My prior car (94 eagle vision) had automatic HVAC and aftermarket remote start.

I was not aware the rear defogger turned on during remote start on the Maxx with manual HVAC. That is just super. I've only done remote start a few times in the morning on the Maxx.

As someone posted earlier, I too am very impressed with how quickly the Maxx warms up. If I just start up and drive, it reaches full operating temp in 1-2 miles. My old car took forever.

This morning, the Maxx was covered in frost. I forgot to remote start. However, I started the engine and had the windshield defrosted in about 4 min. The outside temp on DIC display was about 36F. While waiting to drive away, the DIC even displayed the message "ICE POSSIBLE". Never saw this before. If this is a safety warning, it's a nice touch.

I am a little disappointed though in performance of the electric rear defogger. It takes a long time to clear light frost. After driving 5-7 miles the frost is only starting to cleared near the electric wires. Not sure if this is normal or if something is wrong. Will mention it next time I bring it in.

I also wish the LS came with heated side mirrors. Chevy should make them standard on all cars as a matter of safety. Or at least make them an option when not standard equipment. While I can quickly get the car inside nice and toasty, there is nothing I can do to clear the side mirrors when there is frost, ice, snow.

Anyway, thanks again for all your time and contributions to this forum. Your dedication is much appreciated by all.

How many of you have tinted your windows? I'm looking at getting it done soon and recall a post a few months back regarding a problem with tinting the back window on the malibu maxx, something about loss of AM radio reception. If anyone has any feedback regarding this or advise I would appreciate it. Including any brand tints or quality recommendations. I'm going to have it done professionally for sure.

    Thanks in advance.
  • californiamaxxcaliforniamaxx Member Posts: 17
Congratulations! I've had my Maxx for 8 days now, 650 miles and runs great. I love the steering. It doesn't sway or blow around on the road at all. We've been having some wild rain and wind out here in California and it's been fun to drive in. The 45 MPH wind gust haven't even effected the drive a bit. I love driving in the rain and having the back window dry. I have the 2005 LS without the spoiler & rear wiper and I'm glad. the rain doesn't even touch the back window. Nice.

The Maxx experience is just plain FUN!
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Since the Maxx has a mast antenna tinting wouldn't affect reception.

Not the case with sedan which has a rear backglass antenna which might be affected by tints.

I don't know anything about different tints available though.
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
Why would you tint it more than the legal limit? Do you drive at night?
  • michiganmaxxmichiganmaxx Member Posts: 72
Are you saying that 15% tint is darker than 35% tint? My instinct tells me that 35% would be darker.

    [END QUOTE]

In most states SUV's are exempt from the B-pillar back, which is why you see factory suburbans, yukons, etc. with dark rear windows. However, there is no exemption for cars. All windows must have a visible light transmittance of 35% or more.

    [QUOTE]

    (a) (6) Any vehicle model permitted by federal regulations to be equipped with certain windows tinted so as not to conform to the specifications of subdivision (a)(1)(A) is exempt from subdivision (a)(1)(A) with respect to those certain windows. Likewise, vehicles bearing commercial license plates shall be exempt from the specifications of subdivision (a)(1)(A) for those windows rearward of the front doors. This subsection shall not be construed in any way to exempt the front door windows of any vehicle of any kind from the specifications of subdivision (a)(1)(A).
    [END QUOTE]

The section above (a6a) is what covers SUVs.

The tint on my Maxx only transmits 15% of visible light. When I looked at the sample for the 35%, it barely seemed like any tint at all. So much so that it seemed like a waste of money. Though this partiuclar shop does great work at a great price, I should not have settled for a shop that only had two choices.

FWIW, all MAXX ads I've seen, including the one in my wife's November/December 2004 issue of In Style that arrived yesterday, clearly depict the car with an "illegal tint."

At least down here, if you actually are looking for it, almost ALL tint jobs you see on cars are illegal, given the extremely small difference 35% makes. If a car HAD a 35% tint job, you'd have to work to notice.

Your experiences may vary. I'm just offering my observations for others considering this. I'll try and get a picture posted a linked over the weekend.

a month without my Maxx...was driving me crazy..got it back today and the collision shop did an outstanding job...my damage was cosmetic..but still glad to get it back....10 months, 9800 miles and no problems, abeit the rear window shades....will head to SC this weekend from northern va....another 1200 miles round trip....so catching occking!!

We had our first major rain storm of the season and my 2004 LS Maxx did fine - tracked well on wet roads, wipers kept winshield clean without clatter/grind, interior didn't fog up much. The rear window stays quite clean and I'm glad not to have to deal with the 2005 LS spoiler/wiper issues. My only gripe is one cannot bypass the AC for defog/defrost the windshield and one has to deal with cold air from the vents until the engine warms up.
  • occkingoccking Member Posts: 346
Closing in on 18,000 miles. The only significant change, for whatever reason, is that my actual gas mileage on the last trip (30.9) was only one mpg less than the trip computer said (31.8). Curious to see when the weather turns colder if that will have an adverse effect on gas consumption. In real hot weather, I did not notice any difference with or without a/c.
  • paopao Member Posts: 1,867
you are right...at your rate..I never will...but glad to know it is still problem free...as mine as been....curious like you to see how it will handle the cold weather....had a 100 mile drive at interstate spends in the rain last night and was very pleased with the handling of the car....the defog worked well as well with the a/c combo for the defrost...for those any dont like the feature...set your thermostat to a higher temperature....your compressor isnt running, but the dryer is operative to dehumidify the air.....

The incredible quality of the Maxx seemed evident at first sight. My car is still performing perfectly. Celebrating my nine month anniversary of Maxx ownership today. I'm so glad I was clued to it by a well-informed Chevy salesman the day after they got their first Maxx -- a fully loaded black LT. I bought it before I got out of it but the manager refused to give it to me for my GM family discount I qualified for through a parent. (Because it was a "hot" car, he said. Well it should have been.) Since there's a Chevy dealer in just about every small town here in North Jersey, I soon got my silver car at the right price (about 24g out the door the same day at Multi Chevrolet on historic---Leaning Tower of Pizza, The Flagship, wall-to-wall diners---Route 22. They took me to their car lot to drive it back to the dealership for prep, which they finished while I called my insurance and wrote a check. I used the GM website to find out they had my choice. The salesman followed me in my old Corsica.)
BTW it will cost me $135 to get the mold spores cleaned off and Simonized. I'm waiting another month or two when a hard frost will kill all the mold coming off the wood mulch here, which unfortunately is inescapable in this woody spot. I'll tell them not to use compound to preserve the clear-coat.

As of today I see that 60 of us have indicated what color our Maxx is. "PAO" was kind enough to set up a site to help us record our Maxx color. If you haven't done so yet, you can go to this site to indicate your Maxx color: http://oswaldp.freepolls.com/cgi-bin/polls/001/poll_center.htm

Just a reminder, please "vote" only once for the color you actually have rather than the color you like to help avoid skewing the results. Thanks folks...and thanks again, Pao.
