I like the pictures of the HHR but the first Edmunds forum posts aren't positive. I hate slotty windows and the HHR's got 'em.

Still don't like the 'Bu's front end clip, but the car's been great so far. You can't see the front end if you're behind the wheel. Visibility reminds me of my kids old Camry's. Very direct, likeable car.

I never heard of the Malibu Maxx until July 1. If it wasn't for J.D. Powers, I still wouldn't know of it. Even though I don't plan to look for a new vehicle for two years, I checked it out and took one for a test drive. I was impressed and concluded my next car will be a Malibu Maxx. However, I am not going to move my buying plans up. My old Taurus isn't close to dead yet, and Chevy sells the Maxx with touring tires. It doesn't make sense to me sell cars with touring tires in areas where winter is a serious season. Right away I'd have to fork out another $600 for a set of Nokians.

the Maxx comes with BS M&S tires....I dont think there is a manufacturer that produces a car that would come with OEM winter tires....unless Im mistaken...The Maxx has had a heavy marketing campaign for 18 months now..under Chevy's American Revolution banner..and releasing 10 new models for 04/05........I beleive the appeal of a hatchback. plus people fearful of the old GM have held back sales of the car to be honest....I do beleive there is a growing contingent of folks who like the car...and enjoy the ride and the variety the car brings.....had mine since mar 04....and love it..just rolled over 32k ...cheers!

somebody should be able to get a heck of deal on that car!

I think this is more directed to ehelper but anyone is welcome to help me out on this...

My maxx has 12500 miles on it and laready has one bad inner tie rod... I took it to my dealer and they said that it was "within GM specifications." I am not aware of any movement specification on tie rods, but I do know about ball joint movement specs... I was fine with that... not happy, but fine... then they tried to charge me $110 to not align my car. I am a auto technician who uses the same machine that the dealer uses to align cars. The mechanic never put a wrench on my car. Is it still normal for shops to charge $110 for nothing other than a courtesy carwash?

    Thanks for all your help,

I had business at the very fancy Ritz-Carlton in Pasadena, so pulled up to the all-valet parking in the Malibu Maxx. Talking with the valets when I picked it up to leave, they pointed out another car with rear seats which recline (and possibly also move back and forth) - the $400,000 Maybach.
  • beedublubeedublu Member Posts: 236
I like mine, too. I've had it since 8/04 and now have 12500 miles.

Regarding tires...don't underestimate the OEM tires on this car. They got me through a Western NY winter easily. Snow, ice, slush...no problem at all.

As for the so-called death of this car, how come I see so many of them lately if it isn't catching on? Just today, within a 2 mile stretch, three of them passed me in the opposite direction! I think the reports of its demise might be a little premature.
  • starpop1starpop1 Member Posts: 10
In truth, I never checked the tires to see if they had a M+S rating. I only looked at the tread and concluded the tread just wasn't aggresive enough to be effective here in NE Pennsylvania. There is no level ground and no straight roads. I'm in my early 60s, and I'm not nearly as good a driver as 30 years ago. I just wouldn't feel comfortable with the OEM tires. Still, there is so much about the Maxx that makes sense to me, and I will own one some day.
  • kurtamaxxguykurtamaxxguy Member Posts: 677
there will be enough sales to convince GM to continue the Maxx past 2007 ! After that is when the Malibu supposedly gets a major redesign and - rumors say - a much "sexier" sporting body.

Cars seem to be fantasy and reality. In general: The fantasy's an 800+ hp RWD endlessly drifting and flying 200+ mph along the Nurburging or Milford Proving Grounds tracks - the stuff of dreams for most automotive journalists. The reality is we gotta go to work, want to visit different places, buy stuff we have to haul somewhere, ferry people somewhere, all on overcrowded, badly maintained roads.

For the reality, the Maxx, though flawed, does a __very__ nice job.

Have I been living under a rock? I don't recall much/any talk about the 2006 Malibu Maxx SS on this forum. I just noticed a blurb about it in Motor Trend yesterday-- I think it was the July issue.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
Although there has been some negative comments on the tires, they're certainly far better than the oem Michelin Energies on my previous Elantra.
  • kurtamaxxguykurtamaxxguy Member Posts: 677
There have been Canadian articles about it, with the reviewers giving mostly yawns. Apparently one of the Edmunds editors saw it too, calling it unrefined.

Although the engine is nicer (245 HP or so, variable valve timing but still the iron block), the trans is only 4 speed (no manual available). The wheels are huge 18" with lo-prof tires, and the ride is supposedly much firmer. Black interior, blackout trim enhancements, hard racing seats with bolsters, dual pipes, chrome trim = a lot of showy stuff.

It would be great to see that engine and less restrictive exhaust system in a __regular__ Maxx.

for me, it is simply the wrong time for such a venture when gasoline is $2.45 a gallon
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
I noticed some reviews stating that the Maxx is smooth, but rough over joints in concrete roads. Others have rated is smooth in general. Ours seems rougher than it should be over bumps, and of course on the concrete roads, and rougher than on the test drive, where I hit bumps, but on asphalt roads. I will check the rear shocks, as one could be bad. What does everyone here think? It is one week old and has 750 miles on it now.
  • juswheelsjuswheels Member Posts: 42
Mine now has 2,500 miles on it - No problems at all and we have taken it through the mountains in Vermont. All 2 lane road with varied surfaces. The ride was very secure, controlled and comfortable. Much less "road noise" than my previous Taurus. I'm not sure what you mean by "rough" but I like a car with slightly stiff suspension and I don't enjoy driving my "sofa" down the road. That's what I look for in a car but, that's just me.
You may be looking for something entirely different. I think it's because we all like a slightly different ride, that I don't pay much attention to reviews. They are written by people, just like us and they all have a different taste in ride comfort & expectation. It's hard to believe they can't help bring their own preference into it. I do pay attention to the reliability aspect of reviews but not much else. Good luck with your Maxx, so far. mine has been outstanding.

Fsmcsi, My '04 LT has just over 11,500 miles on it and it is still one of the most satisifying cars I have ever had. I agree the perception of "rough" ride is in the eye of the driver in general. I also know that tires that are inflated on the high side of the recommended air pressure will contribute to the sensation of a "rough" ride. Do you know if your tire pressure is pretty close to the recommended level? Another question: Was your previous vehicle a larger vehicle, perhaps with a "softer suspension"?
  • skyhawkskyhawk Member Posts: 126
I have 18k on an 04 LT. I like a firm ride, and I have no problem other than the many poor quality roads in New England. I keep my tires at 32psi and I have not noticed any change in the ride / handling from when it was new.
  • kurtamaxxguykurtamaxxguy Member Posts: 677
tends to be a little rubbery - there is some resonance in the rear suspension bushings which can cause a "jiggle" when the rear tires go over sharp bumps. CU described ride over sharp bumps as "muted kicks".
Still, I've yet to see this car bottom out on the bad potholes (including many on freeways) we have around here. By comparison, the Saturn ION and Prism I used to drive crashed their suspensions into their stops over any major bump.
If you want a stiffer ride, go for the SS version, with its lower ride heigth, heavier wheels and firmer suspension. You can have its interior in any color so long as it's black.

The car that my 04 Maxx replaced was a 95 Thunderbird. I had replaced the horrendous Firestone FR480 OEM tires with Goodyear Aquatred 3s, which I thought would improve the T-Bird's unbelievably scary behavior on wet roads. (Wrong)! What was worse about the Aquatreds was the jarring ride -- even on good roads. The Maxx with its standard Bridgestones is SO much more comfortable to ride in. So as others here have said, it's all in what you're comparing it to.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
Funny that the OEM Bridgestones look so bad on paper and yet deliver. As I've said before, far better than the Michelin Energies on my Elantra (pure, overpriced crap).
  • kurtamaxxguykurtamaxxguy Member Posts: 677
One car mag mentioned the stock tires were designed for a smooth ride, and in that respect they seem to work very well. The Maxx is the first car I've owned that handles bad potholes reasonably well.

Interesting about the Energies - some car mags didn't like them either (didn't handle well enough and had harsh ride).

Chevrolet dealerships in the area this past Sunday. I've never seen the new car inventory so low. My original plan was to find a left over 2004 and try to work a good deal for my Camary. But the dealers only had 3 Maxx's between them. And they were all 2005s. I may wait 6-8 weeks and see what I can do then.
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
I wasn't that impressed by the latest promotion. I got $6K off the base LS in February. It seems that most of the buyers lately haven't done as well. Chevy has a good web site with inventories showing actual Moroney stickers. You can always cast your net a little wider although I doubt if there's many 2004's left.

My engine and tranny are running better than ever. I credit the replacement transmission parts for that. The car has a lot more zoom than ever. Perhaps it is that adaptable system e2helper was talking about. I have been flooring it a lot since the tranny overhaul ;) I still do have a minor howl, but it is dramatically less than before the surgury.
I was able to silence my sunroof squeek by puting velcro on either side of the front hinge. That stopped the bar from rattling against the closed glass.
I do have a regular squeek which I believe is coming from my replacement steering column. It is quite regular now, and should not pose a problem for those hearing impaired service technicians at the dealer :confuse:
My OEM tires are squeeling a lot more as I make my usual tight turns. I don't think they'll make it much past winter if I allow them to stay on that long. I'm looking forward to a new pair of H rated Daytonas.
My "I can't believe he is doing that" moment with the Maxx came as I tried to bring home some drywall for my bathroom project. I cut the board in half, but did not realize until I got out to my Maxx that neither a 4 x 8 nor two 4 x 4 sheets would fit in the hatch opening. Using my college education, I stuck the sheets in the 5 inches it would go, and had the remainder resting on my bike rack hitch. I flex coorded the hatch down as far as it would go, and wrapped a second flex coord from the hatch to the bottom of the hitch. I shook it a few times to ensure it would not become flying drywall  and enjoyed the looks from the passing police cruisers on Route 1 as I made my way home. :shades: Now there's a commercial that all other prospective Maxx owners would like to see GM!! :P
  • paopao Member Posts: 1,867
maxx4me...wow..I have doubled your mileage already.....32.5K on it and climbing now....still very happy with mine as well....still have that squeek coming from the domelight.....and one from the sunroof shade when I slide it forward (usually when parked during the day in the sun)..but usually have it slid back open when driving...

Im still not experiencing the "howl" in the transmission....that or Im use to the sound now!..havent noticed anything different in the engine performance..most of my increased mileage has been hwy anyway......no problems at all with the steering column either.....still a solid car...

I changed out tires and rims at 18K....went to the 17 inch and wider profile tire....have loved the ride and handling...a bit firmer with the lower and wider profile tire and definite improvement in handling...Im debating putting the OEMs back on for winter....as not to harm the custom rims...but will see....

Havent had the experience of the homeowner you are with the wall board....so...cant comment there.....have had it full of boxes..seats down and luggage headed to the cottage at Ocean City for the 4th of July.....so very impressed with the haul capacity......

now waiting for my Pontiac Solstice roadster to come in!!!!...that is the second car for me and my hottie.....actually its her car..trading in a 96 Eddie Bauer Edition Ford Bronco....(hey anybody want to make me an offer on it!!!!)....so another first year GM model to deal with.....but I think will be as solid or more so than the Maxx.......cheers...and happy Maxxing all!!!

I've been looking at MAXX. My wife and I went to a dealer yesterday. We looked at an LS and my wife didn't like it. A couple of reasons:

    1. the seat cloth looks cheap; what's it made of? It doesn't touch as comfortable as that on Cavilier, Taurus, and Camry;

    2. the rear opening and the luggage area is small and won't have much practical use. Does anybody know the dimension of it? Can I put a 45"X45"X45" box into it?

    3. it doesn't look as "cute" as a Cobalt or Malibu LS.

    1.. the seat cloth looks cheap; what's it made of? It doesn't touch as comfortable as that on Cavilier, Taurus, and Camry;

I wouldnt rate a seat by touch but rather how it feels when I sit in it and how it adjusts for long driving

    2. the rear opening and the luggage area is small and won't have much practical use. Does anybody know the dimension of it? Can I put a 45"X45"X45" box into it?

here is the luggage Cu ft for the Maxx off the checy website.....I would have to measure to see if you could get that size box in it or not.......22.8 or 41.0 with rear seat folded down...the sedan is rated at 15.1 cu ft for the luggage area..remember the rear seats do fold down and the rear deck comes out of the Maxx! I have fit three large rolling suit cases, two small duffels, a computer case. three beach chairs and a large 48 qt ice chest in my Maxx with the seats down!

3.. it doesn't look as "cute" as a Cobalt or Malibu LS.

...depends on whose car it will be hers or yours...GRIN.....I certainly would compare the Cobalt to the Maxx in functionality.....the sedan and maxx are the same car....from the rear pillar forward.....so I guess she doesnt like the hatch back design and rear tail lights on the Maxx...as compared to the sedan uh???

I just measured the back of the maxx with the rear seats tilted back the furthest they will go. the space is approx 38" wide, 28" deep, 20" tall...that is considering the height of the rear deck in place...this height will increase as you take the deck out but you have to be aware of the glass so as it not impact anything...hope these measurements help....again..this is with the seats NOT FOLDED Down...you can add about 4-6" in depth if you fold the rear seats foward...but not folding them flat...so as to allow passengers in the rear seats.

    Hi Pao,

Thank you very much for your responses and the measurement!

I've been reading messages you and other Maxx owners posted for quite a few months now. Learnt a lot from your experiences with this car. I'll keep reading.

    Thanks again for your help!

I do know that I fit a 27 inch flat screen TV in the box in the back of my Maxx with the seats folded down and there was still room. We moved our daughter to College last year and fit an incredible amount of her stuff in the car. I also fit a battery powered ride on Hummer with room for groceries. Hope this info helps

does not seem to howl in mine, and have noted the adaptive feature seems to have helped with shifting on hills.
As long as I'm not driving the car hard, the shifts going up hill are quite smooth and the torque converter occasionally unlocks itself to allow for some better engine-trans match without requiring a hard shift. It's Definitely one of the better 4-speed trannys I've owned.
  • paopao Member Posts: 1,867
have missed the discussion on the 'adaptive feature'...what are we referring too here?
  • If you have a squeaking/creaking sound coming from the sliding sunroof shade, I fixed this on my 04 Maxx LS. You can hear the noise when with shade closed if you push up and down gently on the shade near the vent holes.

The creaking sound is coming from the plastic trim piece that makes up the vent holes. That trim piece snaps into the shade and is removable. To remove it, tilt the window up, but don't open it. Slide the shade about half way back. From outside the car you can see the 12-16 plastic tabs that hold the trim piece in place. From inside the car, reach up with one hand and gently bend each tabs inward (towards vent hole) just enough to allow the trim piece to be pulled down a little bit away from the shade to the inside of the car. Once all the tabs are released, continue wiggling the trim piece down and out of the opening. At the center vent hole, you have to pull the back edge of the trim piece down first before the front edge will release. Do not bend the tabs back too far or they will break off.

Once trim piece is out, I smeared a little of the clear dialectic silicone grease (the stuff you use on the door gaskets) on the outside of each of the tabs where it contacts the shade opening. I then reinstalled the trim piece. Start at the center of the front edge and work towards the ends. Push the trim piece up a little bit at a time until all the tabs click into place. It's been about 3 wks now and the noise is still gone.

If anyone tries this fix, please do so at your own risk.

Yes, this information helps me. thank you!

I'll check it out...it comes with it closed and open..i thought is was coming from the dome light..but will look into the vent issue as well in the slider...thanks!

I found the front clip and the seat material to be two of the weakest links in the 'Bu. I don't mind chrome, but extending the chrome under the lights is a bit ungainly-- the 06 clip is apparently cleaned up on all models. I've read that seat materials would be different in all models. Although I found the seat surfaces uglier than my old Elantra, I've got to say that the seats themselves are some of the best I've ever experienced in a GM product. The Elantra took a while to grow on my as well and is about the most comfortable compact. I'd probably miss the extra stretch out room in the 'Bu if I went back though.

As to the Cobalt and 'Bu sedan. I've only sat in a Cobalt but it seemed much less roomy than my Elantra, probably near the bottom of the compact range as far as useful room. Haven't checked Edmunds, this is purely a subjective read on a quick climb in the car.

I personally find the flexibility of the Maxx one of its stengths. I also like the looks of it better than the sedan, even though it's been compared to a Chevette (by me) and Citation in styling clues. The d-pillar is a bit thick but no one's rammed me yet--cross fingers.

I personally find the c-pillar and rear end of the 'Bu sedan a bit clumsy. They tried a bit hard to hold on to the previous models look. Someone had a photochopped new Sonata wagon posted--gorgeous, much nicer than the sedan-- I wish such things existed in all mid-sized car lines. As it stands now there's only the Mazda 6 and the Maxx in that size range. Too bad. Ten or twelve years ago, both Camry and Accord had nice wagons.

Given the fact that the sedan greatly outsells the Maxx, I'm ready to believe that more people side with your wife than with me. On the otherhand, Chevy has done absolutely nothing since its introduction to market the car. Sort of like the slow selling Ford Freestar in that regard.
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
Well, the technician who cleaned the Maxx and so forth added 5 pounds too much air - he had the tires at 35, when 30 is on the label. Lowering the tire pressure did substantailly improve the ride, so it appears that the car is very sensitive to tire pressure. Still, I think that better dampers (shock absorbers), would make it even better. Has anyone changed them to something else, or to ones from a different version of the (Saab, Opel, Pontiac) same platform?.

I was afraid of this when I found out that the 'bu and maxx antenna's were screw-ons, but my antenna was stolen. So now there is a little threaded stub on my gate. So from here, I got a couple questions: 1) anyone else had this happen? 2) are replacements cheap? 3) if it happens again, any ideas on how to prevent it from being removed? And just fyi, the radio still gets the strong stations just fine, but the weak ones have no chance. and even the strong ones fade behind/under tall buildings.
  • nortsr1nortsr1 Member Posts: 1,060
inndiswe: Try radio Shack, AutoZone or PepBoys. The antennas come with adapters to fit almost all of the threaded stubs. Not expensive and easily obtainable.
  • indisweindiswe Member Posts: 10
thanks for the idea. beats going to the chevy dealer (which isn't too close for me).
  • csandstecsandste Member Posts: 1,866
I keep my tires at 36 and find that it adds to mpg and (probably) to treadware. Liked the ride better too. Too each his own.
  • jerrywimerjerrywimer Member Posts: 588
It has a screw-on antenna? Our sedan only has the little nub XM antenna externally. I think the FM antenna is embedded in the rear glass along with the defroster grid.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Maxx has a traditional screw-on mast antenna for AM/FM. It is located off the liftgate. As you know your sedan uses a hidden rear backglass AM/FM antenna

I have been getting a -CD ERROR- message in last week. It happens after starting the car, and all operations of the changer do not work. I have tried turning it off, ejecting cds (which it won't do) etc. The next time I use the car, the problem has gone away and the changer works great. This has happened twice now. Has anyone had a similar problem or know what is the problem? '04 LT with 18800 and still loving it.
  • kurtamaxxguykurtamaxxguy Member Posts: 677
e2helper can probably describe this better, but my understanding is the auto trans "adapts" to your driving style by modifying shift points and torque converter lock-up points.

I drive over a particular mountain pass every night. When new, the trans shifted rather abruptly and had trouble picking the right gear range for the hill. As the car aged, the trans smoothed out and responds much better to throttle changes while on the hill.

By comparison, the Saturn ION trans, supposedly adaptive, never did smooth out on that hill.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Take it to the dealer - they will likely replace radio with a new part which has updates.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Actually some of the other users here posted on this topic. When I checked with someone more knowledgable about this type of stuff he led me to believe that there really isn't that type of adpation going on - so I can't explain why it improved for you but I am glad that it did. :)

I had this same problem with my 04 Maxx the dealer replaced the stereo 4 times then in April replaced with an 05 stereo and took care of the problem for good. The 04 stereo has a software problem.
  • tallmugtallmug Member Posts: 10
Thanks for all the help. Even though our maxx only has 18000 miles on it, it is no longer covered under warranty. We bought it with a salvage title (not wrecked, stolen, and returned) and I assume the warranty is nullified with this sort of title. We got an excellent deal, though. I may just deal with the problem. I checked, and saw other post who mentioned shutting off the cd player before exiting the car may prevent the problem. I will give that a shot. If it continues, I may look around for a used stereo.
