That is strange. My CRD goes into 5th right at 56-57mph like most. One idea: some CRD's apparently have speedometers that quite far off. I wonder if you're only going 56mph when your speedometer is indicating 65mph. You could check this with a GPS or by using a stopwatch with highway mile markers at a steady speed (60mph is easiest since that should be 60 seconds).
After reading several posts about how dirty air filters were at fairly low mileage, I checked mine tonight, and found that there is an a/c refrigerant line above part of the filter box, kind of in the way. I was able to open the box enough to see the dirty side of the filter (which wasn't very dirty - not dusty here in Michigan I guess) but I'm wondering if I have to worry about damaging that a/c refrigerant line, or if it is even placed in that bad location on all CRDs.
I'm going to check the accuracy of my speedo as it appears my shift point is higher - I'll dig out my GPS and see what it reads. If I set my cruise to 100 kph (62.5 mph) more often than not it doesn't shift/ lock up (stays at 1900 rpm). Is the 200 rpm difference due to the tranny shifting into 5th or the convertor locking up?
I think is the way that you speed up if you go up to speed slow the shift will engaged soft and easy and 5th will go in at about 54 or so. but if you speed up fast it will shift at 65 or 67. try it the easy way and you'll see.
Thanks Caribou, I did a search of the codes on this site and the infamous EGR rose its ugly head.
Two questions: 1.) What would you use to "clean" the EGR? 2.) How would you clear out the error codes?
Since our EGR is, I believe, a little different this side of the pond, comments and experiences from other would be appreciated...especially if this is going to be a maintenance issue every +/- 20K miles.
Hi Boiler, 1-) I would use a petroleum distillate such as "White Spirit" paint thinner. Avoid using acetone, synthetic paint thinner or gasoline. I think it's best to immerge the metal part of the valve in the thinner and remove the contaminant when it's wet (soaked) using a 1/2" round paint brush. Never use the edge of a steel object to clean a valve or it's seat.
2-) I read that the ECU removes the error codes after 40 "non-occurences". This might take care of the OBD stuff.
Since I've not yet repared/cleaned mine, I don't know what the guiding part of the valve looks like. Could we propose to use a small stainless steel bellows to seal out the stem and bushing :confuse: The known alternative today is the rotary valve proposed by Siemens. It's just a bit more expensive... The wear (increase) of the gap between the stem and guide will allow future contamination to occur more rapidly. Perhaps a graphite bushing and titanium coating of the stem could be faster fix?
Once you have the valve in hand, don't forget to try it. You have to make shure it responds to a few volts. I think 5 VDC is sufficient to see it move. The manual calls for a 12 Volt check light...
On "this side of the pond" as you say, the second hand market of recent diesel vehicles is not doing well because of excessive cost for maintenance and obligation to have service done by costly "specialists". A few people are already saying we went too far with this type of engine and emissions controller.
Week 3 that's right....3 waiting on parts and the 1......that's right.....1 tech that can work on CRDs. Way to go Chrysler. Can't wait to try your next vehicle.....not
Well, I tried everything. Fast slow, door open, door closed, acc on, etc. Still. no go. Thanks for trying to help guys. Not having any issues, just curious as to if there had been any codes or not.
siberia: Thanks for the changing Dif, oil. Also my trans. will shift into 5th at 48 and into lock up at 53mph. However with my old PCM it was 62mph for 5th and 65 for lock up and then gingerly lowering speed with dec. on cruse. That seemed as if the trans was not made for this engine. Now the new PCM makes it run much smoother and even a bit more quiet. Best of all is increased MPG !!!!
crdblazr: This is exactly what my CRD did. The fuel mileage was always 22 mpg. After they changed my PCM everything, is better fuel mpg 24.5, and shifts at 48 into 5th and 53 in lockup. Which is so much different than before. Hope this helps.
nescosmo: I am not to sure that is the problem. After trying all I could and my mpg was still 22 mpg, shifting into 5th was as you say. After they changed my PCM that improved MPG to 24.5 and it shifts into 5th at 48 and lock up at 53. This PCM change out has been wonders for the CRD all the way around. You just might consider asking them to change your out.
bvcrd: Ya can't give up so soon! call the dealer tec and ask him (or her if it's a equal employment shop). Must be fair about this after all we are now in the 21st century. and ask how to do this, I have faith in ya and you can do it! You go man, or in the case of an equal employment, girl. You may need to know this as there may be less and less CRD certified tec's, as time goes by. Eventually this crd amy be a real special highly wanted Jeep, like the 4 door Wrangler, Dakar from 1997. DCX did not sell many of those either.
stb: I am not to sure that a lot of these problems are not stemming from a bad PCM. Mine was replaced about three weeks ago, and after trying so many things STAR gave up and asked the tec what he thought, and he suggested changing the PCM. It did the trick! Think about all the PCM does and how many things intermix with it. Lots, so I was told. Maybe it just might be worth a try.
bvcrd: Hey, after reading your note I saw something, I have never had my door open when I do this. Also I only get to do this once, and then have to run the engine for 2 min, before I can try again. Maybe this might help. Hope so for your sake.
I'll give it one more try. I was reading where GCs only do the cycle twice with it ending up on the 3rd on. I tried that too, but no go. I read an article where they push in on the odo reset, then just turn it on once but no go there either.
Thanks Farout. Silly me, I thought mass-produced vehicles were all made the same way. Wonder if CRD problems are related to different CRDs being put together in different ways?!?!
Why of course. We have all heard of the rigs built late on a Friday. Wouldn't want one of them. Then there are the ones built early on Monday while the hangover is still going strong. Not one of them either.
Farout.... I'll love to have my PCM replaced but my CRD is working ok for now; What kind of an excuse could I give them for the replacement of the PCM.
bvcrd.. On my if you push the reset and turn it once the dashboard will test it self. All the light come on the tach, the speed gage will go up and down, well all the light and bells will sound as a test. Maybe you have a different type of PCM on your CRD maybe is one of a kind, you know all are different ---in a sense---.
A lot of these posts (logically and fairly enough) are about problems people are having with their CRDs. I read along just to be aware of what's out there and have found this place to be the best forum for the CRD.
But I thought I'd post my experience with my '05 built in March 2005. Although I got an EGR and reflash at 6,000 miles (light came on and the dealer didn't quibble one bit), I now have 19,700 miles and haven't had any problems. No shudders, no brake problems, no nuttin'. It's so boring.
Mileage has been a reliable 21.5-22.0 city and on a 3,450 mile road trip from MN to SC through the Appalachians and Piedmonts we averaged 29.6 for the entire jouney.
Went 790 miles round trip last weekend and averaged 30.4.
Went from Minneapolis to Pierre, SD and back again yesterday and averaged 30.2
I don't baby it. I don't beat on it either. I think it's an amazing little machine!
I am with you on this one. I have 26500 on my CRD and love it! Averaged 28.5 on 3450 miles from WI to AZ - did lots of "gold mine exploring" in AZ so was happy with the overall mileage. I pull a small 5X8 covered trailer and it is barely noticable when going down the road loaded. The transmission is one of the smoothest shifting I have ever owned - and seems to be hitting the gears at all of the proper RPM ranges. I am also vey happy with the torque this little engine puts out. I would not trade for anything else on the market right now.
I'm with you guys. My '06 is good to go. I only know of 2 or 3 guys on this and my other forum that really bash the CRDs. That is pretty good odds. Maybe better than any othe make. It sure isn't bad by no means. Sure there are issues on some, but isn't there always? I mean, we don't live in shang-ra-la.
Nice to see some posts from happy owners - we have a Jeep Liberty: Problems & Solutions discussion. Maybe we should start one for CRD Problems/Solutions too?
nescosmo: I tried this and it works just as you said, that's nice to know. Do you know if there any other tests we can do? I appreciate you sharing this test with us.
bvcrd: What about the vehicles made on Sat. & Sundays? I think Wed. would be the ideal to get a Vehicle made. I can say that after my PCM was changed out this CRD runs fine, and should I get 28mpg on a trip I would shout for joy. Time will tell.
This guy is from my home county (Indiana). I am curious how the FEDERAL permits that are REQUIRED to do this are going for people you think that they can build a STILL in their backyard without ALOT of oversight and government paperwork. Any takers?
Remember the premise of Dukes of Hazard? Anyone remember the song Copperhead Road? For the old timers, how about the classic song Rocky Top? This is serious business with serious consequences that is being taken a little too lightly.
For those that think this is new, big government issue...open your history books. What's one of the first police actions George Washington took out on his own people? You guessed it, a group of farmers who would not pay taxes on their whiskey, AKA the Whiskey Rebellion Whiskey Rebellion
If you think that the government is going to differentiate your still from Seagrams or from Jessie Dukes, you may be in for a rude awakening.
...that doesn't mean that it isn't fun scheming about fightin' the man!
Love Mine, At 18,000 miles had re flash and EGR valve. I talked them into replacing inter cooler hoses and pitted rear rotors all at no charge. Milage at 20,000 miles has never been better over 30 highway and 25-26 around town. 36 psi in tires (original)and synthetic oil in diffs
my crd is a march build 2005 egr at 16000 miles no other problems love it milage not as good a some about eighteen to twenty around town but my 2002 v-6 got about fifteen miles per gallon i love my crd
Just turned 2200 miles and had 1st oil change at dealer: $84. He pulled the VIN and said "No recalls for this vehicle." What I don't know is what the original dealer did to it before I bought it. It was on his lot for about 8 months before I bought it. Does anyone know how I can find my "upgrade" history? Also - aired the tires up to 37 and am leaving in the morning for WV (from Flint) pulling about 2000# trailer/ gear. Will report back on mileage next tuesday. Still no owners manual from dealer in Southfield. Bummer.
A colleague of mine had to replace his Bosch common rail fuel pump and one injector after 100,000 miles. The cost was over 3000 Euros (+/- 3500 USD). The discussion about using biodiesel rapidly aborted !
I was really happy to see that there are others like me that think the CRD is a great vehicle. I do have an update on my little Liberty - since I posted yesterday a small Wisconsin deer decided that he wanted to commit suicide by running out of a ditch and right into the driver's side of my CRD! Doesn't look like much damage - but after visiting the local bodyshop I find that over $2000.00 damage has been done. I now will have a CRD with a new front fender and driver's door! Nothing like getting some new parts put on at 26500 miles! Insurance company promised me all original Jeep parts - so other than the poor deer ending his life - things aren't so bad! Are deer in other states as dumb as the ones from Wisconsin???
They are in Kansas. I was driving along one night and a mess of them crossed the road in front of me. I slowed down almost to a stop and WHAM!!!! Something ran into the drivers door, and I looked over and there was this deer face pressing into the glass. FREAKED me out!!!
>Are deer in other states as dumb as the ones from Wisconsin???
No. The dumbest deer in the world reside in Wisconsin.
I've never in my life driven through a place where, when they hear you coming (and they do when you have a CRD) they run TOWARD YOU instead of away. It's like a Saturday night live skit.
Another CRD that's almost in my backyard in Highland !
I have a June 2005 Black CRD Limited that I bought in Southfield. 27,000 miles and lovin it. Been to Chicago, the Upper Peninsula, Mackinaw and Myrtle Beach. Getting 23 to 28 MPG. Still need to install Mopar skids this summer. Using Walmart Rotella 5W40 and PS only in the winter. My Wranglers are still in great shape and performing well even when I swerved to miss a deer on I-69.
No need for the dealer until now. Got a P0410 according to my dash and P0401 according to the mechanic. EGR time for me! Waiting a week for parts to arrive. Still driving it but acceleration is poor now. Not happy with dealer: one rookie and one "pro" in the diesel dept. No updates from service unless I call. Considering looking for another dealer.
You cannot put a remote starter on the CRD because of the glow plugs being part of the starting circuit. If you read the owners manual, I believe it states that remote starters are a no-no.
I am interested in purchasing a CRD, however I am apprehensive because of the new diesel emission rules that are going to kick in soon. I am concerned about the CRD not being able to pass state emissions tests once they are phased in. Has anyone researched this? I would be interested in knowing others thoughts.
ecrd: You do not say what state you live in. These CRD's meet the emission standards set for 2006. This was the last year the Kiberty will have a CRD for a while because of the emission laws. The 2007 emission standard was not worth the price for the Jeep Liberty, at least for 2007.
Comments
That's similar to what I'm experiencing, I'm going to check my speedo to see if it is accurate - is your Liberty a 2005 or 2006.
I did a search of the codes on this site and the infamous EGR rose its ugly head.

1.) What would you use to "clean" the EGR?
2.) How would you clear out the error codes?

The same company offers biodiesel processing kits.
