Which Dallas/Ft.Worth dealership offers the most competitive pricing and service after the sale?
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141
majikuf....again, my experience was a long time ago. And, it was related to a motorcycle, not a car.

But, based on that experience (they did indeed tried to pull a "bait and switch" on me, agreeing to a price on one motorcycle, and doing paperwork on another, cheaper model), I didn't buy from them. Good thing I checked the paperwork closely, otherwise I may have made the deal and rode away. Although, in my case, the differences between the two motorcycles would have been pretty evident.

Still, even as I was going out their front door, they came out hounding me to come back in to make a deal (albeit at a price higher than we had agreed upon for a better motorcycle).

They were pretty sleazy. They may have changed over the years, though.

Yah, it seems like most of the people complaining about the dealership complain about them being car salesmen. For the most part, car salesmen are snakes and if you know this going in, it's usually not so bad.

I might talk to the internet manager and see what he has to say about the bad reports i've heard.

High dealer document/processing fees are pretty much the norm in Florida (and not just at Case dealerships..)

Plenty of examples of $499-$799 on these boards...

    Outrageous, huh?

kyfdx.....boy, you're so right. I just saw one over at the Inifiniti G forums. Guy/gal, got a good price on the car. Then, when you add in the "delivery fee" (that should be already part of the price of the car) and "doc fee"-$700, my jaw dropped. I think there was a ~$1,500 delta between what he/she "thought" they paid, and the extra $1,500 they actually paid when all was said and done.

I solve this problem by always telling the salesperson to give me their best price including all dealership required fees minus TTL. I've never had a problem with dealers trying to sneak in additional costs later.
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141
mikey...I'm with you. I make one offer, one total figure (although I do figure out my taxes and add in the state and local licensing costs into my offers, too). They either accept, or reject my offer.

Some dealers try to tell me that "you forgot this fee or that fee in your offer". I always tell them that my offer is firm. If they want to do business, it's up to them how they proportion my offer.

They normally ask me how I came up with my offer, to shoot holes in it. But, I always get back to the point of "if you accept it, I'll drive away in your car. If you reject it, we'll part as friends and I'll move on."

This was helping someone else buy a new car ('09 Honda CR-V), but we had come up with an offer, made it all inclusive. Dealer's sales manager gave me major pushback, but finally accepted our offer when we started to leave. Guess he didn't believe me when I said the offer was firm.

Anyway, we get to the F&I office and they try to add in a couple hundred dollar doc fee. The person I was helping was just about to give it up to them, when I said, "I guess you didn't get the message from the sales manager. Our offer was firm, included everthing." and I began to get up to walk out. They eventually did the deal. But, not after telling us the doc fee was required by law (nope....a doc fee isn't required by law).

I try to make my offer with as little wiggle room as possible. A one time offer, including eveything does that, just as it does with your offer.

Acura already gives you this for free-4yrs or 50K miles and most insurance companies offer this for free as well.

I was wondering what a good price is on a 8 year 80K or 10Yr 100K extended warranty might be. Would like to get it from the dealer when I get my TL SH-AWD with Tech, but have no idea what a decent or fair price might be hear in Southern California.
  • rlonn1rlonn1 Member Posts: 106
So are you saying that you still got the TL SH-AWD but with the tires that come stock? I think you said it was the HPT package that was a harsh ride.. Not sure if you abandoned the SH-AWD for a FWD TL only??? Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me.. Should be pulling the trigger on a purchase in the next 5 days.

Anyone have any idea what March incentives might be or what 2009 incentives were? All the dealers seem to be sitting on alot of TL's in PNW.
  • rlonn1rlonn1 Member Posts: 106
Honda America to Dealer $2000 ends March 1st. What will be after that I have no idea. it could be more of the same? I will tell you that 2 weeks ago, the $2000 ended march 31st. Last week it changed to March 1st. At some point manufacturing slow down will catch up with sales. Also, honda America may feel that recent recalls of Toyota and Lexus may increase showroom visits to Honda and Acura.. This is all speculation on my part, but with $2000 on the line, I will get my 10 SH-AWD this weekend and not gamble on March surprises..

Yeah, I also noticed that the price quoted on carsdirect went up by about $1,500 last week. I suspected that maybe Acura pulled the $2,000 dealer cash for TL Tech models. However, looking into Edmunds, it still shows that the promotion is available until March 31. So, I am confused now. :confuse:

EDIT: Just checked Edmunds again, and found that the program had been changed to expiring on March 1 indeed. Maybe March 31 was a typo in the first place as most manufacturers update their marketing program once a month. However, carsdirect prices are still $1,500 higher than last week.

I have been lookign at 08 Tl with Nav but the pricing is not making any sense as they are genrally in $28-29K range. Whats is wrong with these dealers. They want to sel these cars for what they almost sold for in 08. Who wants to buy a used car for the price of a new one. Newones are a few thousand more and a certified vehicle with a 100K miles warranty is not the price of a new or any where close to it. A lot fo these acrs are sitting ond ealer lots for months and the salesman and their managers seems to think the 08 TL's are worth more than gold.

Has anyone traded in a 08 for a 09 or 10 TL. What kind of tarde in values are dealers offering. I would assume $18,000 - 20,000 would be the max a dealer would be offering for an 08 TL with low miles. Are they trying to artficially trying to keep the values higher by offering higher trade in values.

An 08 Tl with nav in 15,000 miles is not worth more than $20,000 to me and I don't think there anyone stupid to pay them $28,000 for these cars. Atleast I hope not.
  • gbosilgbosil Member Posts: 88
Well ... Acura is no Honda Accord. I currently own two Acuras a 2007 TLS and a 2010 TSX v6 w/Tech. They are worth every penny. No other car manufacturor can come close to reliability, resale, styling and value.. PERIOD! Just food for thought ..Retail for an 2008 TL w/Nav 15K mil is 33K per Kelly Blue Book. These cars hold their value. Trade in Excellent Cond is 27.3K.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
My daughter just sold(she got a company car so didn't need the Acura anymore) a 2007 TL with 47000 miles to an Acura dealer for 18500. And you know that when somebody just sells a car to a dealer and is not buying anything they are not going to get top dollar. In fact, Carmax was offering 17500. So I think you're statement that an 08 TL w/Nav w/15k miles is only worth 20k is pretty naive.

Plus, just because a dealer is asking $28000 it doesn't mean they won't take a lot less. It's called negotiation.

I had an acura dealer tell me yesterday that the price that I was quoted was "old pricing" and that the new pricing was $400 higher. (comparing prices from dealer to dealer) He then said he magically had one left on the lot with the older pricing. I guess it's standard car dealer bs, but it could be incentive related.

I think I will just drive my 2004 accord a little longer and skip the TL for now. :(

I have been reading these posts for the last several weeks and used it to narrow down my next car purchase. The cars I am also looking at include: Audi A4, Audi A5, Lexus HS, Lexus IS, Honda Accord, Infiniti G37, and VW CC. I have gone back and fourth with the local dealer here for a few weeks now. I am at the point where I really do feel like there is no more room for negotiating. The final deal includes is for $38,600 TOTAL (including tax, title, dmv, doc, processing, etc.) Am I getting a good deal for this car???***In response to the previous posting, the dealer gave me the same non-sense about the invoice price magically going up $400 dollars***. Once they brought this up, I made it known that I was ready to walk away from the deal and buy a Lexus instead. The only reasoning I can come up with is that the $2000 incentive was only for cars that were on their lot before January.
  • rlonn1rlonn1 Member Posts: 106
TRUE, the deals are for cars made in 2009, not 2010. Older stock, and I was told that on January 1st the price of the TL went UP about $450 so that fits... however they still have a lot of cars on the lot, the TL tech sell faster then the $5K more SH-AWD.. I honestly think that a lot will change in MARCH and it will probably favor the Dealer more then the buyer.. Don't get me wrong, deals are still to be had, but to get that sweet $5000 off the SH-AWD tech, you will probably need to act in the next 2 weeks.. Then it gets down to what color and Interior color you want... Good Luck.. :)

Since the sales tax rates and DMV fees vary in a wide range, to ask for opinion on price (or post price of actual deal for that matter), one should list price before TTL and show doc fee separately if it is significant (say, over 100 bucks). Here in CA, we have sales tax near 10% while some states have zero sales tax.

$2,000 dealer incentive can be applied (depending on if the dealership is willing) to all tech models....regardless of FWD or AWD versions.

Will that incentive be around next month? Who knows. But, at least in my area (SW OH), these cars are slow movers. Both Acura dealerships around me have loads of inventory. Using that as a very narrow observation, I'd say those incentives will continue in March. But, that's just a personal observation.

The deal includes: Price of car @ for $35,000. PLUS tax @ 8% and other fees. For a total of: $38,600. The dealer will also have to do a dealer trade for this car with a nearby dealer (cost of getting car is included in final price). Should I jump on this deal?
  • jtlajtla Member Posts: 388
    edited February 2010
The car has a MSRP of $40,645 and invoice of $37,821, so the $35,000 price quote represent $5,645 off sticker and $821 under invoice before dealer cash. The OTD price $38,600 - selling price $35,000 - sales tax $2,800 = $800 to cover DMV registration and other fees sounds reasonable, too. So, IMO any further negotiation or shopping around may yield little to zero additional saving. The only wild card is whether Acura will sweeten the deal in March -- or take away the $2,000 dealer cash for Tech models.
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141
rozario...I'm of the same belief as jtla on this. Depending on how far the dealer swap is for your car (doesn't your dealer have much stock? Is it a weird color combo?), I'm not so certain any charge for that is legit. Dealer keeping a part of the Acura marketing money doesn't surprise me. And, I think it's expected that they do.

It's up to you if you want to see if Acura sweetens the manufacturer to dealer cash back. Just based on what they did last year, they may add another $500 making a total of $2,500 incentive. Or, they may remove part, or all of the incentive.

We really won't know until March hits.

For all the stock the dealers have around me, none of them have my preferred combo...either crystal black pearl with umber interior, or red basque pearl with taupe interior. Most of the cars around me are either black, silver, white with black interior. Just a personal choice, but I find those combos boring.

So a dealer just told me that he can't get me the price I want partially because he doesn't have the car on the lot and it would cost too much to get the car on the lot.

I guess maybe I've been going about this wrong. I need to find a dealer with the car on the lot and then maybe they will be more able to deal. (not to mention none of these guys are waving the dealer fee)
  • majikufmajikuf Member Posts: 13
So I just got a dealer to offer me $40,500 OTD plus my tag for the subject car. (I'd be transferring a tag, so I wouldn't expect it to be ridiculous) In florida, tax is 6% so I figure it's about $38,200 after the dealer fee and everything.

What does everyone think of this deal? I'm thinking this might be about the best I could hope for at the moment.
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141

$38,200 is a really good price. Glad you jumped on it. What color were you looking for?

You may be right. The easier it is to make a deal on a car they already have on the lot, the easier they may be to deal with. That said, every dealer I've talked to seems to be more than willing to get any color combo I want from another dealer. As a matter of fact, they're the ones who suggested I let them do it (after we come to a price agreement).

Personally, if you're not willing to do a dealer swap, don't make the offer. It shouldn't make any difference to them on their inventory status since they're swapping one of the dealer's cars for another dealer's car. Assuming the other dealer is within driving distance, what are they out? $50 in gas and 3-4 hours of a lot boy's time? How hard can that be?

I haven't jumped on it yet, but I will go check it out tomorrow. I am going to drive the AWD and then the non AWD version of the car to make sure that's the one I want. I figure if I don't really see much of a difference, I will take the non awd version so I can get just a tiny bit better gas mileage and save myself at least $3k. I figure with my trade in, it will get the car under $30k.

This is from a dealer that I hadn't talked to until I saw on the internet that they had the inventory and I sent them an e-mail saying "what do you think about this price?" The only issue that I have is that he came up with the $40.5k pretty fast, since he did, I'm thinking that he can probably drop it to $40k or lower.

Once I get in there and threaten the old walk out trick, I might gain the upperhand, but we'll see.

Any more replies are still solicited for this deal!
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141
majikuf....make certain that you drive the FWD version with the upgrade wheels and tires. It makes a good difference in the way it handles. But, IMHO the AWD and the FWD TLs are kind of two different animals. The FWD TL is a nice and sporty luxury cruiser. The AWD version is a real sports car with some lux thrown in.

I'd like to hear your views after you drive both, too.

just bought my 2nd TL 2010 FWD Tech package. Northern NJ 33.8 k price. Traded in my 04. Same sales person as dealt with in the past. Much improved automobile. Ride much improved. Added mud flaps and wheel package. Asked Sales person about awd, xtra cost was unnecessary. Always drove a fwd car. Very capable in the snow here in NJ. Forum offer many views. Very helpful with my car research. Thank you.

  • rozario_2010rozario_2010 Member Posts: 4
Well, since your interest rate is higher than ours (8%), the dealer most likely has to lower the price of the car a little bit more in order to keep this car nationally competitive. That is all I can figure. I still hope I am getting a pretty good deal with the $38,600 OTD for all. Any word on the March 2010 deals/incentives?
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
In most states if you buy a car outside of the state you live in you still will pay the sales tax applicable to where you actually live, usually at the time you register for title. So there is no correlation between higher taxes and lower prices. In Illinois, Cook County sales tax is currently 10%(highest in nation) and surrounding collar counties range from 6-8%. Car prices are no cheaper in Cook County because even if someone from Cook County buys a car from a surbaban dealer where the tax rate is lower, they are charged the sales tax based on their home address. Prices are based on competition, not sales taxes.
  • missjillmissjill Member Posts: 8
How much can you get off the price of the TL with a cash sale? 5% state sales tax I am planning on test driving this weekend and I hate to go to a dealership without knowledge. Also, what are the average fees added on? I don't want to look like fresh meat to the hungry pack of wolves :) Thanks in advance for any info.

    Dealers prefer finance, here's why:
    - they can sell you warranty easier (more $)
    - they can bump your rate .25-1%; for a couple hundred more bucks
    - the bank pays dealer $100-250 just to write the contract

    why cash doesn't matter:
    - the dealer gets the money either way.
    - you write a check for $35k
    or
    - bank wires them $35k

Always finance, and say "I know you'll make $200 just for writing the contract, so I'll finance if you take another $100 off"
    - 1 condition, you have to keep loan 32 days (1month + day)
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141
jill, Acura has some special lease rates that don't require dealer participation (dealer gives part of their margin dollars to buy down the lease rate). Acura hasn't stated that "dealer participation" is required as it looks like it's done strictly through American Honda Finance.

So, you're a purchase customer, so none of this pertains to you. Acura state that your dealer "may" have special finance rates (that may require dealer participation). But, nothing in my region that's published.

So, what we know....Acura has $2,000 in factory to dealer cash, good to at least Feb 28. That's on the table. But, it's only for models that have the "tech" package.

I don't know which model you're looking at. TL base? TL base with tech package? TL base with tech package and 19" wheels and tires? SH AWD? SH AWD with Tech? HPT wheels and tire package?

If you're going to pay cash(write a check) it may make the deal a little easier cause they don't have to spend a lot of time with to get financing or even have the deal fall throug because of financing problems. I think if you ask most dealers it's a wash. Pros and cons to both from their viewpoint.

But, Jill, if you do plan to finance your vehicle purchase, Acura currently offers 1.9% up to 60 months. No bank can beat that. This special rate can be combined with the $2,000 dealer cash for Tech models. :)

We will be paying with a check. I would like to test drive the Tech pkg AWD or FWD... for sure the Tech pkg. Trying to decide if I want to purchase a car or suv. This car has made the cut in the options it offers. I think the remote start option is way too much, when many GM cars have the remote start included. It may all boil down to who takes what I offer. I can easily walk away because I don't ever get my heart set on anything. Now my husband is another story :) , but this will be mine to drive. Any help on a great price for one of these babies will help. Thanks for all the replies.

jill....you've got the right frame of mind. So, let's look at where you're at.....

TL base with tech invoice= $36,095 including dest. Take the $2K off for the dealer incentive, you're at $34,904. Something between $35,500 and $36,000 should get that deal done. You can do the grind routine and try to go under $35,500 and roll the dice. But, I'm all for a good, quick, and easy deal. Make the $35,500 offer and tell them it's a "yea" or "nay" offer. If none of the dealerships accept it, bump it up a $100 or $200 and see if they bite.

On the TL SH AWD, it shakes out to be an invoice of $40,159....less the $2K, and you're at $38,159. Same deal as above. I'd probably go in with a $38,500 take it or leave it offer and see if they bite. But, $39K would still be a good deal.

    Jill,
I am in market for the AWD w/tech and I got an offer few days ago from a dealer in Fairfax VA. 2010 TL AWD with TECH package for only $37,495. I did not even talk to the guy to lower it more. $38.5 K is high to me.
Has anyone out there closed the deal with lower than 37.5k? This is before TTL. but included dest. I ve seen few 09 models with this configuration & very low miles 5k only for around 32k to 33k.
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,141
tudiu....was there a trade involved in your deal? Were there any other "fees" involved (doc fees, for example)? If so, what were they?

Which dealer gave you that quote?

Around SW OH, $38.5 is about the best I've been able to do on a TL SH AWD tech, straight cash deal, no trade. That includes the doc fee. Tax and title needs to be added, though.

One of the dealers I have been talked to e-mailed this to me this morning:

    JUST ANNOUNCED! Acura Financial Services
    TL Spring Opportunity Program
    $1,500.00 DISCOUNT
Towards the lease or purchase of a new 2010 Acura
Eligible clients with lease maturity dates 2/23-6/1/2010. See dealer for complete details

It doesn't do anything for me, however, because I don't have a lease ending before 1 June, but if you do.... Here's an extra bit of cash for you.
