I'd spend some time on two other threads, both in "Smart Shopper". The first is "Lease Questions - Ask Here", You can get all the numbers you need so that it isn't a mystery when you get to the dealership.
If you're looking used, try "Real World Trade in Values" Terry is the main expert over there. He owns 6 or 7 stores, and goes to several auctions a week from Florida to Detroit to Philly, and points in between. He can give you ideas on how models are holding their value, which colors are good & bad, and will even tell you what your Mitsu will be worth to a dealer on trade, or if you try to sell it yourself.
Spend some time over there, and you'll be well prepared to make the right deal for you, and you'll feel better about the deal when you do make it. Good Luck.
This is in addition to any discounts you haggle.
i traded in my 99 accord auto which i had about 10k in mods and 89k miles..whith a busted trans
they gave me $6300 trade in value for it.
overall..good deal?..just curiouse because the damn manager from the dealer secretly added $300 to my final cash price when i was signing..i origiannly agreed to $28,480 for the 8
oh...and 5.8% apr for 60 month sounds right to you all??
The have another yellow with touring and wing (I think) MSRP is around $30,400 and they are asking $25k or something for it.
Where are you located? I and send you the details.
The lease numbers on a leftover car may not be too good - since it is basically a used car. And you have to go with MAC to get the discount deals.

got reprimanded for putting my e-mail address in the last post and it got pulled. please forgive my willingness to put out my own personal info here.
anyway, i am in WV and would like some more info on the yellow 8's in your area. Even if it seems like i'd have to be crazy to travel that far, i probably am.
the dealer in charleston, wv, still has about 12 to 14 04's left and made a good deal for me. I could have left with a loaded, red MSRP of $34,750 for only $26,000. I know they have several reds, one silver - maybe two, a nordic green, black, gray...anyone looking for one, post here and I'll pass on the dealer info. Most of them were MSRP of $27K and up. All 6 spds, no autos.
thanks for your help in my search.

Also, for your own protection so that as our discussions are indexed by the search engines your email address is not picked up by spammers.
Thank you for your undestanding in this matter.
The car I leased had a sticker of $32 K and I am paying $329 a month. Residual is around 19.5K.
I went for the lease since I had purchased an RX8 and was paying $585 to own. I wanted to lower my payments.
Getting to your question. Don't know where you are located but in New England the RX8's are not moving off the lots too well with all this snow.
I would imagine you can make a pretty good deal right now. Maybe CarMan can help advise what the latest incentives are but 4K below invoice seems like the going rate. You should be able to get your lease payment well below $400 a month.
By the way if you are in a winter climate the car is good on snow providing you get 4 good snow tires.
Good luck car hunting. By the way if you are still in the market for that yellow RX8 I would try 128 mazda, last time I was there they still had two available.
The left over 04 cars have $4,000 in rebates if financed via MAC, but probably have bad lease numbers (VS an 05) since the residual on the 04 will be $2k or more less.

I am 5'8" and my hair just hits the headliner in a new 8 with the seat all the way down in a T or GT pack NEW car. When I test drove USED 8s with T or GT I had a bit more head room - I guess the seat cushion settles a bit with use.
Just make sure his seat is all the way down and then just lean it back until he fits :-)

Hope it's everything you are wishing for. Enjoy!
I am curious if anyone knows what incentives are being offered in the Philly area before I go and talk to the dealer. I am looking at the AT Shinka (the wife can't drive stick and will need to use the 8 occasionally). If I can't get a deal on/get a Shinka, I am willing to go with a Sport AT. Just want to know what to expect before I start negotiations. Thanks!
Use the car finder on the Mazda web page to find an 04 like you want - color, options, etc and then go make a deal. I that auto cars are even harder for the dealers to sell - which makes you getting a deal even easier. The Mazda web page says they are 6 04 automatics within 150 miles of Philly. Red, black, silver with various packages. Get at lease the sports pack - it the most goodies for the least money: low profile tires, sports suspension, larger brakes and LSD (all added on auto cars only), HID headlights, traction and stability control, fog lights.
The Shinka - don't care for the paint, in fact what is so "special" about it when they use it on a normal Miata? The interior is nicer, but you can add the black console trim to any 8 for a few hundred. The mysterious suspension improvements and the leather are not enough to justify the higher price - to me, anyway.
If you just have to have an 05, or are planning on leasing the car - you can go though www.carsdirect.com and get the price pre-negotiated for $100 over invoice. Keep in mind if you DO lease, there are $2,000 more in incentives available so make sure you get those too.
Dennis
Be sure with the auto to get the sports package (at least) since there are tons up upgrades in it. Heck, even the manual tranny cars need to have that as well.
If you could find a car with just the auto and sports pack, you would be looking at a deal cost of $25,500 or so and with the rebates a price of $21,500. Some dealers are doing $500-1,000 UNDER cost to get rid of these 04s so maybe $20,500 for a new RX-8 with auto and sports pack!
The ones that I saw in your area were more loaded than this. The left overs tend to be, it seems....
Dennis
Since you are more informed than me I have one more question. Are the dealers willing to work off of invoice with these rebates of $4k or MSRP only? What should my strategy be when I walk in to negotiate knowing that this much is out there?
I can foresee a scenario where the salesperson thinks that by offering $4k off the sticker, that would seal the deal for me to drive off that day in a RX-8. I need a day off from work to get to the one dealer, so I have time to develop a strategy. I have never negotiated for a left over before. It always seems to work that when I have to make a move, it is always ill-timed to take advantage of these type of situations. This time I have the luxury of waiting if need be
1) Don't have a trade-in, it makes the rest so much easier :-)
2) Use the car locator on the Mazda web site to find 04 cars equipped like you want - colors, options, etc. You might have to expand your search to other nearby areas to get the right car or cars.
3) See if the dealers have their own websites - you may have to Google them up. If so, see if they show these 04 s as specials on their sites. They may already be advertising them below cost - the rebates. If nothing else, get the name of the Internet sales manager and/or the new car sale manager from the web page. Note how many 8s they have, both 04 and 05 models. The more they have, the more willing they will be do get rid of one of them cheap.
4) If the dealer is pretty close, just stop in and ask for the right person - otherwise call them. You want to talk to either the person in charge or the person who is used to dealing with low-ball Internet customers. Tell them you may be interested in the left over 04 you saw on their web page and you are sure they want and need to move it out. Tell them you know about the $4,000 in rebates ($2,500 of this requires you finance through MAC) but you need a bottom line price. Tell them you have seen other dealers discount the cars to as much as $1,000 UNDER invoice and take off the $4,000 in rebates.
See what they say.
Dennis
Which options were on your new RX-8 and what color is it?
Thanks!
tsl
Find out the new car sales manager's names at all of the dealers and fax them a request for a quote. Tell them what you want and you see from the Mazda inventory that they have it. Tell them you have seen this at other dealers as well and you want to know their bottom line price and ask them to call or fax you back with that best deal. Have them include any fees (doc fee, etc).
Then take the lowest one, if it is low enough or send that offer to the other dealers who reply and see if they will go lower.
Dennis
One thing they both have in common will be the thrist for gas. The rotary is not an economic motor to operate, despite its small size. The 8 will likely be cheaper to insure as well. The 8 will be a lot easier for folks in the back seat to get in and out off. I big v-8 means you don't have to pay attention to your driving - with gobs of torque you can avoid shifting just mash and go. With the 8 you will have to be paying attention - get caught in the wrong gear and you will be slower than a Geo :-)
I is nice to have the big v-8 power. I used to have a 2000 'vett convertible. I sold it and got a Honda S2000. Like the 8 a total package - light, handling, and accelleration (if you pay attention). It is SO MUCH MORE FUN TO DRIVE than the 'vette - even though it is not as "impressive" to others - a well balanced, light, tossable car with a slick tranny.
Lots of folks test drive the 8 (and the S2000) and just don't get it. No torque, etc, etc. Others (the select few?) get it :-)

did i mention the $4000 in rebates on the 04 rx8? (that's to keep me legal!!)
The seller (a physician here) bought it last summer and is selling it with ONLY 1900 miles on it because he says he moved right after he bought it and it doesnt work for him anymore. He certainly seems reputable and the vehicle history report checks out, though I'm not sure whether the report would show any warranty work that was done.
My question is: is this still a great great deal with all the recent markdowns on 2004s at dealer lots? Is there anything I need to worry about in terms of maybe he got a bad one which was one of the first ones made, or one which tends to flood alot? Is the warranty really worth that much, he says they tacked on $2000 for it, and does anyone know if it would really be fully transferable? Thanks
Miles are super low. The seller has had it less than a year?
Another data point.....my RX8 was totalled a couple of months ago. I got some money for pain, etc. But, they also gave me $23K for my 1.5 year old RX8 (no special wheels, but did have the NAV) for my GT with 20K miles.
If you can buy the one you're looking at for $23K, it sounds like a good deal.
Best thing to do is to go over to the Real World Trade IN Value thread and post the details of the car and its location to "rroyce" (Terry). He'll be able to tell you what the car should be bought for.
Sometimes aftermarket wheels detract from a car's worth.....not add to it. Don't know what the extended warranty is worth, though.
On the other hand, from what I can tell with all the rebates on the brnad new '04 leftovers, they look like screaming bargains right now.
Mazda has removed the 2004 RX-8's from the mazdausa website locater. They have also been removed from the mazda dealers locaters.
As was mentioned, the 04s are now missing from the inventory search.
I can't see how they are going to sell them if they don't have a deep discount AND you can't find them.....
Dennis
Of course, to a lot of banks trying to buy and 04 in March or April of 05 means you would get a USED car rate - which may not be better than a MAC rate.
Dennis
and did not finance through MAC. I ended up purchasing a Silver 04 that stickered for around $37,000 and bought at $26,400 and with my $3500 equity final difference was $22,900. I was pleased with the deal and I want to thank this forum for some great information.
We decided to go over to the Ford lot and talk to the guy about a Mustang. Needless to say, an 05 satin silver GT is in our driveway. The salesman was such a pleasure. I think he was the best I ever had. He played no games, showed us his price, didn't charge over MSRP and worked hard to get any and all discounts and didn't even try to push their financing when it came to that part. We sat there stunned at how fast and hassle free it was! Total time for complete sale was about 1.5 hours! Part of me will miss the sexy lines of the 8, but the visceral side loves the Stang!!!
Thanks for all you help guys/girls, maybe next car things will work out. I did learn some strategies that helped with the Stang and will be sure to pass them on to family members.
While the RX8 is a hell of a car, you aren't going to be disappointed with the Mustang.
Funny though....the Mazda dealer wasn't willing to deal. If you could have found an '04 RX8 leftover, you should have been able to take adavantage of the healthy rebates Mazda is offering.
Best I can tell, '05s should be going for a decent discount, too.
MSRP on a Mustang GT is about the best you could have hoped for without a Ford discount plan PIN#, though. I'm amazed you even found one in dealer's stock.....
Did you ask your dealer about the rebates / buy down?
As was posted here (and elsewhere) Mazda seems to have paid the dealers the $4,000 and washed their hands of the 04s. Yet I see folks posting that they "got the rebate" and "signed the rebate forms". I guess it could be a ruse on the part of those dealers - make them sign the forms and make them take MAC financing, then toss the forms in the trash (since Mazda will no longer honor them). They can make the same deal since Mazda already gave them back the $4k.
