    It's me again.

I'd spend some time on two other threads, both in "Smart Shopper". The first is "Lease Questions - Ask Here", You can get all the numbers you need so that it isn't a mystery when you get to the dealership.

If you're looking used, try "Real World Trade in Values" Terry is the main expert over there. He owns 6 or 7 stores, and goes to several auctions a week from Florida to Detroit to Philly, and points in between. He can give you ideas on how models are holding their value, which colors are good & bad, and will even tell you what your Mitsu will be worth to a dealer on trade, or if you try to sell it yourself.

Spend some time over there, and you'll be well prepared to make the right deal for you, and you'll feel better about the deal when you do make it. Good Luck.

it's really sad...i have never put this much thought into buying a car before. my theory was "if i like and i can make the payment, i'm only gonna live once and i want a good ride while i'm here." i have agonized over this trade. and, i've never kept a car as long as my mitsu. it's not that i like it that well, i just can't get the guts to trade. also, i'm down to that dramatic drop in payoff every time i make a payment on my spyder and it's real tempting to go for actually having a title to my car. YUCK!! maybe i should go look at the used minivans...maybe a tan or baby blue!!! haha this has been a lot of fun and i'll give an update. tomorrow is the big day for me...my birthday and my car decision day. got a couple test drives set up.... i'm getting old....

Here in the Northeast region the 2004 RX-8 has $1500 customer cash + $2500 MAC cash if you finance with Mazda credit@ Standard rates. ($4000)

This is in addition to any discounts you haggle.

The local dealer here has a couple of leftover 04 yellows for sale. One is the manager's demo and is a GT with appearance, rotary, wing, tape player - MSRP is $33,204 and they are ASKING $26,204 for it. It is new (full warranty), but a demo with maybe 6k on the clock. The price assume you do MAC financing to get the rebates.

The have another yellow with touring and wing (I think) MSRP is around $30,400 and they are asking $25k or something for it.

Where are you located? I and send you the details.

The lease numbers on a leftover car may not be too good - since it is basically a used car. And you have to go with MAC to get the discount deals.

    Dennis...

got reprimanded for putting my e-mail address in the last post and it got pulled. please forgive my willingness to put out my own personal info here.

anyway, i am in WV and would like some more info on the yellow 8's in your area. Even if it seems like i'd have to be crazy to travel that far, i probably am.

the dealer in charleston, wv, still has about 12 to 14 04's left and made a good deal for me. I could have left with a loaded, red MSRP of $34,750 for only $26,000. I know they have several reds, one silver - maybe two, a nordic green, black, gray...anyone looking for one, post here and I'll pass on the dealer info. Most of them were MSRP of $27K and up. All 6 spds, no autos.

thanks for your help in my search.

To be fair - the request was made to not put your email address in the postings so that responses would be shared here where everyone can benefit instead of being hidden in email.

Also, for your own protection so that as our discussions are indexed by the search engines your email address is not picked up by spammers.

Thank you for your undestanding in this matter.

I did not see any lease deals on RX's yesterday in the newspaper. I will check when I go home just to make sure. I got mine last August. It was a 24 month lease with 2K down and I had a Mazda promotion that gave me back the down payment.
The car I leased had a sticker of $32 K and I am paying $329 a month. Residual is around 19.5K.

I went for the lease since I had purchased an RX8 and was paying $585 to own. I wanted to lower my payments.

Getting to your question. Don't know where you are located but in New England the RX8's are not moving off the lots too well with all this snow.
I would imagine you can make a pretty good deal right now. Maybe CarMan can help advise what the latest incentives are but 4K below invoice seems like the going rate. You should be able to get your lease payment well below $400 a month.

By the way if you are in a winter climate the car is good on snow providing you get 4 good snow tires.

Good luck car hunting. By the way if you are still in the market for that yellow RX8 I would try 128 mazda, last time I was there they still had two available.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
No special lease deals on RX-8s that I can find, but CarMan posted that there is a $2,000 dealer incentive for leases on 05 RX-8s. So the MF and residual may be high, but the $2k would help.

The left over 04 cars have $4,000 in rebates if financed via MAC, but probably have bad lease numbers (VS an 05) since the residual on the 04 will be $2k or more less.

i'm assuming you guys own 8's? how tall are you? my boyfriend, quite literally, did not fit in the one i drove on friday. He's 6'4" or 5" and cussed the entire test drive. he hated the car!!
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
You need the sports pack car (no moonroof) or a shorter boyfriend :-)

I am 5'8" and my hair just hits the headliner in a new 8 with the seat all the way down in a T or GT pack NEW car. When I test drove USED 8s with T or GT I had a bit more head room - I guess the seat cushion settles a bit with use.

Just make sure his seat is all the way down and then just lean it back until he fits :-)

just wanted to post an update to the yellow 2004 i was shopping for. bought one in charleston, wv, at raines imports. car stickered for $30,300 and i financed $21,400 and some change with no money down (well, i did pay my taxes, license fees...) dealer came to 26,900 and then i got the 4000 in rebates. remainder was equity in my trade. this was a new, untitled car and I thought i could never afford to drive a new one off the lot. dwynne was a great in helping me locate the yellow ones. THANKS!! if others of you are shopping for an 04, this dealer is still well-stocked. they have several reds, at least 2 silvers, a gray, black, nordic green...- I don't remember a blue one and I got the last yellow. i am very pleased with the dealer and this forum. if i hadn't logged on and found out about the rebates, i would have still been shopping for a used one!!!

I have narrowed down my new car search to the RX-8 and a Mustang GT. I am leaning towards the 8 more ;-)

I am curious if anyone knows what incentives are being offered in the Philly area before I go and talk to the dealer. I am looking at the AT Shinka (the wife can't drive stick and will need to use the 8 occasionally). If I can't get a deal on/get a Shinka, I am willing to go with a Sport AT. Just want to know what to expect before I start negotiations. Thanks!
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
If you are paying cash or doing regular financing I would forget the Shinka and look for a new 04 left over. There is are $4,000 in rebates if you take the 04 (and finance at least $7k through MAC - there appears to be no eary payoff fee so you can refinance of pay it off in a few months) - plus the dealers are desperate to move the cars and some are giving an additional $1,000 off of invoice - so dealer cost - $5,000 is sure a sweet deal.

Use the car finder on the Mazda web page to find an 04 like you want - color, options, etc and then go make a deal. I that auto cars are even harder for the dealers to sell - which makes you getting a deal even easier. The Mazda web page says they are 6 04 automatics within 150 miles of Philly. Red, black, silver with various packages. Get at lease the sports pack - it the most goodies for the least money: low profile tires, sports suspension, larger brakes and LSD (all added on auto cars only), HID headlights, traction and stability control, fog lights.

The Shinka - don't care for the paint, in fact what is so "special" about it when they use it on a normal Miata? The interior is nicer, but you can add the black console trim to any 8 for a few hundred. The mysterious suspension improvements and the leather are not enough to justify the higher price - to me, anyway.

If you just have to have an 05, or are planning on leasing the car - you can go though www.carsdirect.com and get the price pre-negotiated for $100 over invoice. Keep in mind if you DO lease, there are $2,000 more in incentives available so make sure you get those too.

  • pumpkinfishpumpkinfish Member Posts: 61
Thanks for the quick response!!! I think tonight we will hit the lot of the closest dealer to see what he has. As for the Shinka, I have always been a sucker for "special" things, but in the end my head (and wallet) will set me straight! The color was quite striking in a photo on the internet and sparked my interest. I am more partial to red and silver cars anyway.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
the red on the 8 has a lot of (large) metal flake in it. They also use that on some other Mazdas. Looks good from a distance, up close it is up to you :-) The silver is nice, and there were more silver autos to choose from anyway (just one red).

Be sure with the auto to get the sports package (at least) since there are tons up upgrades in it. Heck, even the manual tranny cars need to have that as well.

If you could find a car with just the auto and sports pack, you would be looking at a deal cost of $25,500 or so and with the rebates a price of $21,500. Some dealers are doing $500-1,000 UNDER cost to get rid of these 04s so maybe $20,500 for a new RX-8 with auto and sports pack!

The ones that I saw in your area were more loaded than this. The left overs tend to be, it seems....

    Dennis,

Since you are more informed than me I have one more question. Are the dealers willing to work off of invoice with these rebates of $4k or MSRP only? What should my strategy be when I walk in to negotiate knowing that this much is out there?

I can foresee a scenario where the salesperson thinks that by offering $4k off the sticker, that would seal the deal for me to drive off that day in a RX-8. I need a day off from work to get to the one dealer, so I have time to develop a strategy. I have never negotiated for a left over before. It always seems to work that when I have to make a move, it is always ill-timed to take advantage of these type of situations. This time I have the luxury of waiting if need be :)
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
    My strategy would be:

    1) Don't have a trade-in, it makes the rest so much easier :-)

    2) Use the car locator on the Mazda web site to find 04 cars equipped like you want - colors, options, etc. You might have to expand your search to other nearby areas to get the right car or cars.

    3) See if the dealers have their own websites - you may have to Google them up. If so, see if they show these 04 s as specials on their sites. They may already be advertising them below cost - the rebates. If nothing else, get the name of the Internet sales manager and/or the new car sale manager from the web page. Note how many 8s they have, both 04 and 05 models. The more they have, the more willing they will be do get rid of one of them cheap.

    4) If the dealer is pretty close, just stop in and ask for the right person - otherwise call them. You want to talk to either the person in charge or the person who is used to dealing with low-ball Internet customers. Tell them you may be interested in the left over 04 you saw on their web page and you are sure they want and need to move it out. Tell them you know about the $4,000 in rebates ($2,500 of this requires you finance through MAC) but you need a bottom line price. Tell them you have seen other dealers discount the cars to as much as $1,000 UNDER invoice and take off the $4,000 in rebates.

    See what they say.

just bought an 04 rx8 with the much appreciated help of dwynne and other forum members...my car stickered for 30,300 (remember, this is a leftover 2004). before we even talked about rebates the dealer came to $27,900 for the car. with $4000 in rebates, i was at $23900 plus about $1500 in trade equity. I held out for another $1000 off and got it because they liked my trade (low, low miles and well-loved) and decided they could sell it themselves. bottom line is i financed $21,430-something and the only money i put down was my taxes, license (about $800). my dealer had a crapload of 04's to move and this was definitely in my favor. listen to dwynne and look for one of those dealers with a bunch to move. my dealer is in charleston, west virginia, but they have NO autos. teach the missus to drive a 6 spd - they are too fun!! i have never liked any of the auto trannies that I have ever owned. thanks dad for KNOWING that everyone (even his little girl) should know how to drive a stick!! good luck and let us know if you buy!!

Which options were on your new RX-8 and what color is it?

One more thing. If you find a lot of cars equipped like you want (say you decide on an 05) at different dealers.

Find out the new car sales manager's names at all of the dealers and fax them a request for a quote. Tell them what you want and you see from the Mazda inventory that they have it. Tell them you have seen this at other dealers as well and you want to know their bottom line price and ask them to call or fax you back with that best deal. Have them include any fees (doc fee, etc).

Then take the lowest one, if it is low enough or send that offer to the other dealers who reply and see if they will go lower.

I'm browsing leftover 04s now, so your recent posts have been great advice Dwynne. We'll see what kind of deal I can cut, I think I'm going to leave my existing paid-off car out of it, I can get a better deal without a trade involved and can sell it for more to a private party later anyway.
  • lhesslhess Member Posts: 379
got a yellow one, 6 spd, sports package which gets you the 18" wheels, xenon headlights, stability control... it does have the navigation that added $2,000 to the car (I could have lived without it, but it's fun). I opted for no sunroof because of the too-tall boyfriend not fitting in it with the sunroof (takes away a good 2 or 3 inches in headroom). I also drove one with leather and without and liked the feel of the cloth (leather is too stiff and slidey). my car has cloth. dealer ordered me a spoiler when i did the deal. And that reminds me, if you find a car you like but want some more stuff on it, lots of things can be added by the dealer. If I read all my literature correctly, if you get those options ordered at signing (you may want to specifically add them to your contract), they will be included in your original warranty on the car. If you get enough extra goodies on order they may give you a deal on those as well (more work for the service dept). they knocked about a 100 bucks off my spoiler for me. my bottom line on options was: i want the car because it runs like crazy and the gadgets were gravy for me. DO GET THE SPORTS PACKAGE FOR THE LOOKS, BETTER HANDLING, AND BETTER BRAKES!! Good Luck!!
  • lhesslhess Member Posts: 379
saw a few posts back that you are considering the mustang gt as well. I wanted a good look at the convertible mustang before I bought the 8 and got that chance last week. I HATED IT!! the interior was atrocious!! have you really given it a good look or just like the exterior? the exterior is GREAT!! the 8 and the stang are 2 different worlds when you open the door!!
  • pumpkinfishpumpkinfish Member Posts: 61
Ihess, the funny thing is I like the RX-8 and she likes the Stang GT. She is pushing hard for the Stang but I have made great progress using the savings argument for an '04 leftover. I know she likes the bigger size of the Stang and thinks I would be happier with the higher h.p.'s. It is hard to tell a girl whose father loves American cars and imprinted that into her from birth that the 8 may not have the h.p.'s, but a total package that includes handling, power and engineering.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
The new Mustang is pretty nice, but it is a completely different car than the RX-8 - and you are right about the total package.

One thing they both have in common will be the thrist for gas. The rotary is not an economic motor to operate, despite its small size. The 8 will likely be cheaper to insure as well. The 8 will be a lot easier for folks in the back seat to get in and out off. I big v-8 means you don't have to pay attention to your driving - with gobs of torque you can avoid shifting just mash and go. With the 8 you will have to be paying attention - get caught in the wrong gear and you will be slower than a Geo :-)

I is nice to have the big v-8 power. I used to have a 2000 'vett convertible. I sold it and got a Honda S2000. Like the 8 a total package - light, handling, and accelleration (if you pay attention). It is SO MUCH MORE FUN TO DRIVE than the 'vette - even though it is not as "impressive" to others - a well balanced, light, tossable car with a slick tranny.

Lots of folks test drive the 8 (and the S2000) and just don't get it. No torque, etc, etc. Others (the select few?) get it :-)

sorry to sidetrack our conversation with the stang comment, but i do think the posts relate to buying experience because we're talking about car for money here!! pumpkinfish...hold fast to the rx8 plan. someone that can't even drive a manual cannot be allowed to sway you in the final moments!! (that was a huge joke, don't send her after me!!). I too come from a die-hard buy American family and get strange looks at the dinner table occassionally!! But the jokes on them 'cause I have soooooooooooooo much fun when I'm driving!!!!!!!!!

did i mention the $4000 in rebates on the 04 rx8? (that's to keep me legal!!)

Does anyone know where I can find out more info on the $2000 back for leasing an 05? The dealer told me there is no such offer.

over at smart shopper there is a discussion on rebates and such. you might try a post there - got me a really quick question just the other day. it seems i've heard something about that, but...
  • buffalo66buffalo66 Member Posts: 6
I am leaning towards buying from a private party a titanium grey 2004 RX8 manual Grand Touring with all the packages, cd changer, leather, and basically everything except the navigation system and dvd player. It also has $1700 Motegi wheels purchased from Mazda which look great to me, and a 10 year 100k mile warranty purchased from Mazda at time of sale (the seller says it is fully transferable). The total MSRP with the wheels and warranty was $38,400. It's in perfect condition. I offered $23,000 and he is thinking about it.

The seller (a physician here) bought it last summer and is selling it with ONLY 1900 miles on it because he says he moved right after he bought it and it doesnt work for him anymore. He certainly seems reputable and the vehicle history report checks out, though I'm not sure whether the report would show any warranty work that was done.

My question is: is this still a great great deal with all the recent markdowns on 2004s at dealer lots? Is there anything I need to worry about in terms of maybe he got a bad one which was one of the first ones made, or one which tends to flood alot? Is the warranty really worth that much, he says they tacked on $2000 for it, and does anyone know if it would really be fully transferable? Thanks
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,140
All good questions. It should be fairly easy to find out what service work was done by a dealer. The RX8 is linked, via vin #, to a national service database. Any Mazda dealer can tell you the warranty service done in short order, if the service was done by any Mazda dealer. I'll assume this is the case since it's still under warranty.

Miles are super low. The seller has had it less than a year?

Another data point.....my RX8 was totalled a couple of months ago. I got some money for pain, etc. But, they also gave me $23K for my 1.5 year old RX8 (no special wheels, but did have the NAV) for my GT with 20K miles.

If you can buy the one you're looking at for $23K, it sounds like a good deal.

Best thing to do is to go over to the Real World Trade IN Value thread and post the details of the car and its location to "rroyce" (Terry). He'll be able to tell you what the car should be bought for.

Sometimes aftermarket wheels detract from a car's worth.....not add to it. Don't know what the extended warranty is worth, though.

On the other hand, from what I can tell with all the rebates on the brnad new '04 leftovers, they look like screaming bargains right now.

  • lhesslhess Member Posts: 379
from just buying a new 04, your deal sounds really good if he takes the 23K. my car msrp'ed for 30,300 (sports pack only and nav) and my deal was 22,900 before my trade equity. they priced me a car comparable to the one your looking at (gt, nav, all the bells & whistles $34750) and came down to about $31000 minus the $4000 rebate for about $27,100. I could have probably gotten them down another $1000 or 1500 but wasn't interested because of the color. i agree that sometimes the non-factory wheels are not a good thing. doES he still have the originals? it might be worth trying to get them in the deal in case it was ever in your favor to swap them out. if i were in your shoes, liked the car (color, options...) i'd go for it - that does seem like a killer of a deal. get a number or website relating to the warranty so you can talk to someone firsthand - something in writing would really be good. good luck!

    FYI...

Mazda has removed the 2004 RX-8's from the mazdausa website locater. They have also been removed from the mazda dealers locaters.
  • lhesslhess Member Posts: 379
does that sound like a smart thing to do?
  • kestrel02kestrel02 Member Posts: 26
When I was buying my RX-8 today, the dealer told me that the $4000 rebate has now been pulled by Mazda, even though their website and even some dealer information said it was good till the 31st. They had to backdate my sale to get me the rebate.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
I just checked, and it still shows $3,250 in cash for the left over 04s (but folks are getting $4,000).

As was mentioned, the 04s are now missing from the inventory search.

I can't see how they are going to sell them if they don't have a deep discount AND you can't find them.....

    Dennis
  • lhesslhess Member Posts: 379
all the above sounds rather strange doesn't it? my mazda dealer still had a crapload of 04's to move - i'm sure they're not liking mazda taking the search away and pulling the rebates. maybe the rebates boosted sales enough to give them a false sense of a spring sales boom or something?? I wouldn't have bought mine without the 4000 rebate and a good deal from the dealer, but i wouldn't have bought an 05 either - i would have shopped for a slightly used 04 at a good price!!
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
Call your sales rep and see what he/she says about it. Someone posted on the 8 forum that they were told the rebates were pulled, but there was dealer money or something on the car to take its place. I would be nice if the money was NOT tied to MAC financing this time around - so folks could get their own financing if it proved cheaper than MAC.

Of course, to a lot of banks trying to buy and 04 in March or April of 05 means you would get a USED car rate - which may not be better than a MAC rate.

    Dennis
  • slvr8slvr8 Member Posts: 1
The rebates were pulled but the dealer does get cash money from Mazda. The good thing is that the dealer can still forward the savings on to the customer and the customer can use any financing they choose. I just bought my 04 today
and did not finance through MAC. I ended up purchasing a Silver 04 that stickered for around $37,000 and bought at $26,400 and with my $3500 equity final difference was $22,900. I was pleased with the deal and I want to thank this forum for some great information.
  • pumpkinfishpumpkinfish Member Posts: 61
I went to the local dealer and had no luck. I thought being close to the end of the month I would find an eager salesperson. I felt they were trying to play games to maximize the profits and I was even told you can't believe the prices on the internet!!!

We decided to go over to the Ford lot and talk to the guy about a Mustang. Needless to say, an 05 satin silver GT is in our driveway. The salesman was such a pleasure. I think he was the best I ever had. He played no games, showed us his price, didn't charge over MSRP and worked hard to get any and all discounts and didn't even try to push their financing when it came to that part. We sat there stunned at how fast and hassle free it was! Total time for complete sale was about 1.5 hours! Part of me will miss the sexy lines of the 8, but the visceral side loves the Stang!!!

Thanks for all you help guys/girls, maybe next car things will work out. I did learn some strategies that helped with the Stang and will be sure to pass them on to family members.
  • graphicguygraphicguy Member Posts: 14,140
    Congrts on that 'Stang.

While the RX8 is a hell of a car, you aren't going to be disappointed with the Mustang.

Funny though....the Mazda dealer wasn't willing to deal. If you could have found an '04 RX8 leftover, you should have been able to take adavantage of the healthy rebates Mazda is offering.

Best I can tell, '05s should be going for a decent discount, too.

MSRP on a Mustang GT is about the best you could have hoped for without a Ford discount plan PIN#, though. I'm amazed you even found one in dealer's stock.....

Nothing unusual here....Once Mazda does what is called a "final pay" on a left over product line, thats it. The dealer is paid the final rebate and as far as mazda is concerned they have moved on to the next model year. it's up to the dealers to market any remaining vehicles.

just got the spoiler put on the 8 yesterday. it looks great. my dealer is selling me any and all accessories that i want for the 8 for cost plus 10% for the first 30 days i have it. also, these are covered under mazda warranty - i just need to keep my receipt. doing the rotary accents next and possibly a cd changer.

lhess....I like those rotary accents. I also like the side strakes. Ask your dealer to show you a car with those on the sides, too and see what you think.

    Sweet!

Did you ask your dealer about the rebates / buy down?

As was posted here (and elsewhere) Mazda seems to have paid the dealers the $4,000 and washed their hands of the 04s. Yet I see folks posting that they "got the rebate" and "signed the rebate forms". I guess it could be a ruse on the part of those dealers - make them sign the forms and make them take MAC financing, then toss the forms in the trash (since Mazda will no longer honor them). They can make the same deal since Mazda already gave them back the $4k.
