All the same, since this is a prices paid and buying experience forum, we'd like to hear what your cost was and the trim level, options, etc. It helps people know what kind of deals to expect, and in this case could help people determine where to go so as not to waste time.
"Thousands below MSRP" is not necessarily a good deal. MSRP is usually about 5-10% over dealer cost.
I'm glad you feel you got a great deal! That is the most important factor in this process. Even if a person overpays a little, if they are treated fairly and perceive they got a good deal, they will continue doing business with that dealer. Good luck with your new car!
Like I said buyers should do the research. I had an offer of 19,890 for the same RAV4 model BASIC 4X4 4cyl w/ 3rd row, but I smell something fishy so I did not bite into it. They wouldn't give me the vehicle inquiry report to check what I will be getting, just an email saying blah, blah accessories. Parkway Toyota gave me that which has also the VIN number of the vehicle so everything is transparent, and I know the vehicle really exists with the accessories I want.
I really hope you are joking! Why should a person pay more for the same thing just because he/she has more money? That does not make the vehicle worth any more. If you don't want to share how much you paid, I can respect that.
Why was 19,890 for a Rav4 4x4 with the 3rd row fishy to you? Did you see the vehicle?
Again, I'm happy you feel you got a good deal, but your review without price or trim level details is not enough to encourage me to visit that dealer, and I suspect the same is true for many on this forum.
Those of you not opting for the moonroof, please open the two rear passenger windows while driving at freeway speeds. You'll think twice about the moonroof option.
Five full tanks of gas (mpg). 22.5, 23.5, 22.0, 22.5 and 24.5. The last tank was done at highway speeds (a recent trip to Palm Springs at 2AM).
Had my credit union search inventories for this vehicle and either couldn't find one, or wasn't able to match my price point. Local dealer came through for me. Very good dealer experience

...Or just try it out and you will understand why I didn't bother meeting with other dealers.
Thanks for your help...

I'm the owner of the dealership that gave you that quote and we will not come down an extra penny!!
Just kidding......forget how much more or less they have to go.
What is the number that you would like to pay for this vehicle. If that is not reasonable look for another one that will fit your needs.
Have you test drive several SUVs?? or you are purchasing a RAV 4 just because it's a popular vehicle?
Make sure you like what you will drive (comfort, features, fun to drive, etc.
Good luck!
There seems to be a lot of posts asking if their price is a "good deal". If I had the time, I would research everyone's individual deal and let them know, because I like this kind of stuff. Since I don't have that time, I will reiterate how to get a good price here:
You would do well to offer them between a 3-5% profit over dealer COST. Real dealer COST is found when you subtract holdback and rebates from the invoice. To find out holdback, go to edmunds' section on tips and advice, choose 'buying' and scroll down to the article about 'holdback'. Or do an internet search on 'Dealer Holdback' and you'll find it.
Currently, here's what Edmunds says about Toyota holdback.
2% of the Base MSRP (Amount may differ in Southern U.S.)
So, the formula for dealer cost is Invoice-holdback-any incentives (rebates to dealer or customer). Take that number and multiply by 1.03 for 3% profit, 1.04 for 4% profit, etc. That should be your offer. It's fair to you and the dealer. Decide what you want to pay before negotiating and DO NOT BUDGE! If they won't sell it to you for your price, leave and go elsewhere. I don't care how new or 'popular' a car is, a good dealer wants your business and will work hard to get it. Add tax and reg fees AFTER your offer is agreed upon.
I hope my comments have been helpful. Good luck with your car purchases!
First-time poster who's buying his first car. I'm looking
@ Rav vs. CRV. I need some help throwing a reasonable offer to my Mass-based Toyota dealer for the 4WD Rav (no other accesories). I know how to calculate dealer cost and calculated the 2007 rav4 at $203387 (invoice) - holdback (2% of invoice) - incentives (none) = $19900 - assuming I offer a dealer profit on this of between 3-5%, is an offer of $20,500 reasonable? I don't want to lowball or be too high and b/c I haven't been through this before, I'm looking for some good advice. Thanks so much!
That is because I don't want to haggle with dealers and believe me if they can screw you they will do it. They sell hundreds of cars every month and they have met all kinds of people so trying to outwit them will not work. For them you are just another fish in the ocean.
So don't go to the dealership saying, "I will only pay this much because I know the cost". Try to negotiate and just remember that you don't need to buy right away and that you can LEAVE THE DEALERSHIP if you don't feel comfortable.
options for $22680 in NJ
Cargo cover: $140.00
Roof rack: $220.00
Daytime running lights: $40.00
Tow prep package: $160.00
Carpeted floor mats: $199.00
Destination: $645.00
The final cost out of door was $22680 + tax + doc fees etc. for even amount of $24000.
Did I win or loose?
Comments please. i haven't picked up vehicle yet or even signed contract but left small deposit until Monday
Thanks.

I feel your frustration! At least your fleet salesman told you those options weren't available and that the "build your own" option on toyota.com was a joke BEFORE you bought the car. Imagine getting the call that your "supposedly ordered" new car is in and realizing it is wrong. Then you are made promises that they can switch everything out for you and it turns out, they can't. Bunch of jerks- I've already called corporate and told them how misleading their website and unknowledgable the sales people at the dealers are. What is funny is I couldn't get a sunroof as an option on my model (V6 base, 4x4) in NY City, but it is an option in NEBRASKA?! Go figure.
Good Luck!
With those options (cargo, rack, wheels, lights, prep, mats, destination) the invoice price is $23,633. So figure you add the wheel locks and remote starter and you are still getting the car at invoice. A good price for what you are getting. You'll love the car. Go for it :-)
Features I want are
Moonroof, tow prep, drl.
This option I'm still debating Leather with heated seats or cloth. Also is the JBL radio that much of an upgrade over the standard 6 disc? I also see it comes with aux input jack that i can hook my xm myfi to or is that incorrect?
So what do you think I should pay for non leather and leather? BTW I am not going to pay $199.99 for floormats

If we're thinking of the same thing, those are fog lights. Fog lights are very useful when driving at night and in, you guessed it, fog. They illuminate more of the surface area closer to your car, which really enhances your feel of the road. Plus, they make the car look cool. :shades:
Without actually looking it up, I'd take an educated guess as to why they're on some RAV's and not others. The RAV's without fog lights are the base model, and with would be the sport and limited models. Thus price is affected by the trim level you desire. You'd have to see what else comes with the increase in price and decide if those options are worth it to you. If you only drive during the day, fog lights really aren't worth any extra money to you, but if you do a considerable amount of night driving you will enjoy the extra light.
I need some help with pricing (located in MA), I am thinking of buying a Base AWD V6 Rav4 with the following options:
DRL
Roof rack
Tow prep package
I was quoted a price of $23 633.00 (before TTL fees) from an internet division of a dealership in MA. Is this a good deal? Thanks in advance for your input!!
Daytime running lights
50-state emissions
Roof rails
Tonneau cover
Carpeted mats
17-inch steel wheels
MSRP = $23,714. Paid $21,650 + TTL.
This forum was pretty helpful. Top 3 things I learned:
1) Make sure you know the difference between dealer invoice and dealer cost.
2) To settle on a price work your way up from dealer cost, not down from MSRP.
3) Decide on a price you will be comfortable paying and stick to your guns.
They will give you a million and one reasons why they can’t get to your target and they are all baloney. We went $50 over our goal price basically because we just got tired of going back and forth between dealers, but we’re still satisfied with the final number. We left about 3.5% of dealer cost for the dealer as profit. They made their money and we got what we feel is a fair price.
Thanks to all the helpful contributors.
I got an offer from a dealer around Houston area which is the lowest one that I've ever had. Here's detail :
07 RAV4 Base 2WD V6
Tonneau cover 140
Roof rack 220
Daytime running lights 40
Tow prep package 160
---------------------------
Subtotal 580
2WD V6 Base 22,785+TTL
---------------------------
My price 23,375+TTL
Do you guys think this is a great deal? I think the V6 base price should be around 22,200, but the dealer argues that price is impossible because of holdback, advertising fee, finance fee, processing fee, and TMF fee (what the hell is TMF fee?). I need you help!!!
Just so everyone knows, holdback is what dealers receive from the factory when they sell a car. It is usually a percentage of invoice or MSRP.
If a dealer is trying to charge you for holdback, they are attempting to double dip. Also, ad fees are completely negotiable, finance fee can be avoided by financing elsewhere (i.e., your bank or credit union, most likely at a lower rate). You can also negotiate processing fees (usually referred to as "doc" fees) by having the dealer write in a credit for the same amount as the fee on the next line. Most dealers do charge some sort of doc fees, and even though it is extra profit, many dealers are unwilling to part with it. I have no idea what "TMF" fee is, but I would definitely suggest you go to a different dealer.
