Mikes... same with me. No problems, not taking back. May I ask what kind of mileage you are getting? I have gotten a very impressive 22mpg for city driving. Thought that was great!!
    Thanks, RONN

Bushka.... I am 46 years young, and the Avalon appealed to me just fine. If you look throughout this Forum, you will find a wide range of ages. Alot of folks in their 20's are buying this car. The Avalon use to be more geared towards the older age, as it was alot less sporty in design. It is always however had an excellent reputation for its luxury and space. With it's new design, I think it will appeal to many young people as well as older.

    Hi:
The rear seats are genuinely three-across, so two adults and one child are unlikely to outgrow the avalon, even if you have a second child. My wife and I just had our second child last week and that is precisely why we're looking at the avalon. Like you, I've read all 150+ pages here and am greatly surprised and amused that there are so many willing to pay one, two and three thousand dollars more than if they would just wait a few months. Remember, money doesn't grow on trees, and it is far easier to spend than to earn.

Furthermore, if you can wait till the fall, perhaps the 06 models will be out, exorcised of what bugs (admittedly few) the 05 models have. Let the overzealous and irrational buyers fill dealers' pockets so that the more prudent among us can pry the avalon from dealers later at near-invoice prices.

If you literally need another car now, then by all means buy the avalon - few cars, if any match it anywhere near the price. But, bear in mind the money that can be saved by being a little patient. Regards,
    Deanie

dduzan....welcome to this Forum. I think you will find enough room for you and your family. While I'm single, the Avalon has lots of space inside. I am 6' 2, and there is plenty of room with my long legs, for presons to sit in the back. The trunk is a little small in my opinion, but as I shopped around, there are very few autos that have the space inside with more trunk space.
I have not had any problems with the Limited, and it is a great car to drive.
    Best of luck,
    RONN

Can you give more information about Sirius?
  • gschultz3gschultz3 Member Posts: 134
Thanks for the info. 20" rims, fiberglass body? Am I on a Corvette forum? You don't really have 20" rims (wheels) on the Avalon already? What part of the body is fiberglass/plastic? I've got a 350Z with 19" wheels. What are rims? Maybe you just stayed up too late?
  • gschultz3gschultz3 Member Posts: 134
Also you can use any DVD player even a X box or PS 2.

Thanks again. This will help me decide what to do. I had a Volvo V70T5 with a Kenwood .... DVD, Nav, TV, Sirius, CD .... and I miss it. It would be great if I could convert the Avalon LCD.

My wife would never let me play Halo 2 in the car!

I'd guess Toyota felt that VSC would take away some of the sporty handling characteristics of the Touring model. On the other hand it's hard to not spin the tires during a rapid acceleration with FWD, 280 HP, 3600 pounds, without TC?
  • gschultz3gschultz3 Member Posts: 134
I am 64 but "young" cars appeal to me. I have a 350Z and the Avalon replaced an FX45. I also had a G35. All of the above have simular acceleration but the Avalon is more comfortable. The Z is more fun to drive!

    Hi'
I just signed a buyers order on an XLS and would not have done so if it was at MSRP I was able to get 3000 off MSRP (2300 if you deduct the Toyoguard plus I said I wont pay for that is on all southeast cars) and the only option is VSC and Mats
I guarantee that it is not at invoice and they are still making tons onthe car but it seemed fair to me
So.........I actually found this dealer thru reading the forum I am waiting to get the car and would not have bought the car without this forum's help! But price did matter to me
Hopefully, it is not too big a mistake buying now vs in the fall This will be the most I have ever spent on a car .
I ordered car in Titanium with Graphite interior and hope that color combo will look great It was between that interior vs light gray
I am excited about the car but I welcome reading the negative as well as the positive It helps to be educated Thanks

Good info for rear parking sensor installation.

Do you know of any good systems/installer on the West Coast? Price?

It appears that option (Toyota) is available in some regions, but not out West.

If there are any 2005 Avalon owners who have the rear sensors, any comments?

Thanks for the tip! I noticed this noise a couple of times after my wife left the car.
  • tkaztkaz Member Posts: 69
Took a Limited out for a test drive. Quite impressed. A couple of questions please:
Any issues with using 87 octane gas?

Any word on Toyota color integrating the XM antenna? Present antenna doesn't fit in with the quality of the rest of the car.

Does the Avalon use ceramic brake pads that help minimize brake dust
    ?
What's the impression of the "Dynamic Laser Cruise Control" over the standard cruise control?

Going to take over two sets of golf clubs to the dealer to make sure they fit okay in the trunk.
Thanks for any feedback. First time looking at Toyota.

Just a note to all those that think it financially wise to wait before buying this car. It is true, you may be able to get a little more off the MSRP in a few months. The problem is that interest rates are on the rise and will continue. Unless you're paying cash for the car, you won't be saving any money.

    Analyticangel;
    What dealership??
  • grozagroza Member Posts: 89
Dduzan - One reason the trunk is smaller than other sedans is the fact it has a full-size spare tire. If the full-size spare accounts for an extra 2" in depth, overall trunk space is reduced by 1.5 to 2.0 cubic feet. Add 2 cubic feet to the 14.4 cf on the car, and the Avalon is at the top of the list for trunk space.

What other sedans have you found that have a full-size spare with alloy rim? This is a desirable feature for safety, cost and convenience. It may also contribute several hundred $'s to the cost of building the car.

lamike, I went ahead and bought the headrest DVD system. Everything is containd in the headrest unit, the driver's side unit has the DVD and the passenger side is a slave or can input from an x-box type game. Nothing in the trunk or under the seats.

Ronn, I'm getting 29.5 avaerage on 98% hilly highway driving which I've done a lot of the last 2 weeks. This at sustained speed of 75mph. Daily driving which is about 60% highway I'm getting about 25.2 mpg.

I rather resent the last half of your paragraph. I'm neither overzealous or irrational. I made a well thought out decision based upon needs, size and reliability. I did many hours of research starting about 9 months ago. Thats when I found out that the all new 05 was coming. At that time several places talked about this being an 06 model, including Edmunds.co

I bought on 02/10/05 and was able to get 500 off of sticker on my LTD when most dealers in the greater DC area are still insisting on MSRP. I realized that my trade-in, an 03 Sienna LE was losing value every day.

Please don't think that those of us willing to pay at or near MSRP are either overzealous or irrational. We know a great car when we buy it.

Good mornin gschultz3....I use to love the Z. Never had one, but loved the look. When I posted about the age thing, I didn't mean that the Avalon was just for older people with the old model. I was trying to say that I feel it will hit the younger generation more with it's new sporty look. Enjoy all of your cars..hey I think when I'm 80, I will have the most sporty car ever!! Have a great day.

Great milage MIKES. I will be going to Nashville this summer and can't wait to see what milage I will get on the open road for seven hours.
It's hard to believe that this new machine is getting such great gas with 280horses!!!!
  • ronnronn Member Posts: 398
Dynamic Laser Cruise Control works well. I find it takes awhile to get use to. I tried it recently, as a car came in front of me, it slowed as it should. When the car in front moved to another lane, the Avalon really took off to get back to the 65 mph that I had set. I would think this will be harder on trips to maintain good gas mileage, if used alot? Would others like to respond???
  • ronnronn Member Posts: 398
Good morning out there...How many have tried the new Laser Cruise Control, and what do you think of it? I have mixed thoughts..I have used it once. It really does take off to get back to the speed you have it set for. I'm wondering what the gas mileage will be on long trips, using this feature? Would you respond. I'm interested in how many have used theirs and like it, and if you checked the mileage??

I just ordered a Limited in South Florida with Nav, VSC, and laser cruise in Blizzard White. I paid almost $2,000 below MSRP with no dealer fees. I contacted about 10 dealerships around the state before deciding this was a very good deal, and it's a little more than an hour from my house. Some dealers are charging as much as $800 in dealers fees - that's insane! Broaden your geography and you'll find a deal below MSRP. Heck, for 2 grand it's worth taking a bit of a trip, don't you think?
  • grozagroza Member Posts: 89
What dealer in South FL is offering $2,000 off MSRP? Earl Stewart Toyota in Lake Park has zero dealer fees, but no one I talked to is coming off MSRP yet. We bought an XLS at Stewart.
  • bushkabushka Member Posts: 19
You ARE a grampa! Just kidding. But "sporty"? I don't think so. I'd categorize it as a "near luxury family sedan". The more I think of all that silver plastic on the dash, it's looking less and less like a luxury car. Have you sat in a Lexus lately? Even the ES330 is hands down more elegant, with far less of a plastic feel. But the Avalon appears to be quicker, and hopefully just as reliable and trouble free. This is a much more American car, in every possible way, compared to the Lexus. Regards - Bushka

I have read several publications that said the opposite to what you have read, so I put the question to Toyota in an email. The essential part of their response has been copy/pasted below.

    Response (Anissa) 03/16/2005 04:44 PM
Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.,Inc.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiry.

The 2005 Avalon engine is manufactured in Japan.
Also, Toyota does not have any announced plans to
manufacture the Avalon engine in Kentucky.

Mikes I'm glad you responded that way. I placed a 500 dollar deposit on my XLS on 2/1 and got roughly $2,800 plus off the MSRP, only because I've been doing business there for years and the Sales manager wanted me back since I left them when buying my 04 since they didn't give me the same deal another dealer did. The sales manager who went to Lexus came back and wanted me back as a customer, so whatever Deanie said although I respect that, she is wrong the way she chose her words. Besides as I said earlier each week passes and your trade in is worth less. If you have no trade in and you don't need the car than you can wait hoping to get a better deal, but whats the point of denying yourself something that you wish to have. It's not rocket science, and I learned a long time ago to let things go and not always try to think you got the best deal. Inner peace is more important and the Devil cuts your pockets out so never knowing when we leave this planet for greener pastures or fire and brimstone, enjoy every day you can and treat yourself. Ronn, I get around 23.5 in City driving on my XLS, I think that is awesome as you say a 280 HP engine.
  • just__mejust__me Member Posts: 508
I forgot to add that I do believe Deanie meant well, but certainly we are all big people and I'm sure everyone of us is aware if we wait maybe we can save some money in the future. Anyway Deanie, I wish you the best, and it's okay to speak your mind and share your thoughts.

The statement about having a full size spare makes no sense since in any car I have owned with a space saver spare, the spare tire well is large enough to carry a full size tire.

Toyota just missed the boat on the trunk space specs for this vehicle, in my opinion. At 14.4 cubic feet, the Avalon is going to have limited appeal for families with a couple of kids who want to take a road trip vacation. That trunk space is significantly smaller than a lot of cars that are smaller and less expensive.

I call the trunk space the one major shortcoming in what is probably in all other respects a winner.

Thanks everyone for what I have learned on this forum. Three weeks ago I brought my print out from the Toyota website with the exact car I wanted to buy from this dealership in a town that I do a lot of business in with my company. I thought it would be the right thing to do since I believe in the philosophy that you work with those who work with you. After 4 visits to the dealership and three calls I have still been unable to extract a sales price from the salesman. I have given up on the salesman and will be talking with the sales manager who I know somewhat. I have 2 good prices from other dealers in communites within 100 miles and will
present an offer about a $1000 less than my best other prices. I will submit this to the sales manager only. What a run around. One excuse after another. My wife said it is incompetence and I say it is a sales gimmick. What are your thoughts?

what are people reaction to indigo blue pearl? Does it have any purple cast to it? I hate that. Do you think the car looks great in that color? I am so incredibly indecisive...they all look great.
  • tajahtajah Member Posts: 10
I saw an Indigo Blue yesterday. It didn't hint of Purple. It was a pearlized Royal Blue. I'd call it Motorola Blue. I am purchasing the Cassis Pearl & It is FINE! I really liked the Black & the Champagne color as well.
  • tajahtajah Member Posts: 10
Can anyone tell me what they're paying in the Southeast for the Touring edition? I'm waiting the arrival of my Avalon & have placed a deposit. I'll be purchasing at the end of the month upon arrival. Just curious where to start. I've already been told that some dealers are trading the cars over invoice & selling over MSRP. So I know it's going to be a hard battle to get them down around invoice.

I had Sirius radio in a previous vehicle and just loved it. Their programming is similar to that of XM, but as with all products, there are subtle differences. Sirius offers all NFL games and major college games and I'm a big football fan. XM will be offering MLB. I enjoyed Sirius' stations featuring music of the '60s and '70s. Most importantly, and this applies to both services, the absence of commercials is wonderful.

As far a quality of service comparisons, I don't have experience with XM, so I can't say. I had no problems with Sirius reception other than the expected drop-offs in tunnels, underground parking structures and other very obstructed locations. Sound quality was excellent.

IMHO a decision as to which provider to select should be based upon finding the service who has the programming which best suits your desires. Sirius offers more of what I was looking for.

This question has been handled adequately here. I'll just add to it: I am a grandpa, though only 66, and can't wait to show off my new Avalon to the grandchildren. I find this chat group has become a necessity for me--I check it several times per day--as I wait the weeks and weeks for my new Limited. As a qualified grandpa, I can say that Avalon has proven to be a perfect fit--it is very comfortable and even long trips don't tire me the way they did in my Camrys of the past.

But I also love to crank up the volume, put on my shades, and show off the power as I use the throttle to be the first from a light, and to slide ahead in traffic when a lesser car could not accelerate well enough. And that's with an '02...so performance matters even for those who are more mature, so to speak.

BTW, I have been watching to find what caused the wheel noise when leaving the curb. In the old days a rock in the hub cap would create the exact symptom you describe, but kids are now denied that kind of fun.

Wow. Wow. I had to say this twice. I thought I was the king of negativity, but I guess not. Although, my experience with both Honda and now Toyota is similar to yours, it is only based on two cars, one a very nice 90 Honda Civic EX and now the 02 Avalon. Both brands have been very very reliable. The Honda car's fit and finish in comparison to the Avalon I bought, was superior as was the handling. They are both easy to maintain. I did have a negative experience with the dealership as well as corporate HQ where both bounced me back to each other and wasted their time and mine.

Does the new one has overly expensive tires I do not know about??? Please elaborate. There are 16/17" wheels now, so replacement tires are going to be expensive. Usually Toyota places good, not great tires on the vehicle. Much of the technology is useless to me, especially for the price, but some really enjoy it....until the new technology comes along or until it breaks. But. the silver lining is that power windows, power steering, etc etc. would not have come along unless some of the manufacturers stepped out and tried it, so it has got to come out. Not all of us have to buy it though.

I did like the fact that with Honda, that more of the options and accessories where dealership installed and not packaged, so you could get more a la carte, unlike Toyota. That is the reason I passed up the XLS, with no regrets in 2002.

I'm 29 & have ordered a Touring ed. 05 Avalon. The Black leather & polished chrome look inside suit me perfectly. The luxury options (reclining back seats, the 280 hp, power-everything) are great.

The only thing "older" I would say is the color scheme of the XLS/Limited with the Silver, Light colored seats & the light wood accents, it did strike me as looking like "grandma" style. This is one reason I went with the Touring with all the upgrades available.
  • abfischabfisch Member Posts: 591
Please can you give us an idea of how the Laser cruise differs from the regular cruise control, and its advantages and disadvantages. Since I believe it is in a package, it is difficult to put a price on that difference.

It is better for instance in freeway driving when it is crowded or someone cuts into your lane too fast??? That would be a good thing if it reacted slowly to this.

Your post about the smaller trunk is my feeling exactly. We have no travelling children but still enjoy the generous trunk size on the '03 XL. It appears Toyota has reduced the trunk size and the towing capacity of the 2005 Avalon as a trade off for gains in other areas. Exactly what gains, I am not sure. To Toyota, the target market for the car can live with the lesser capacities and will still buy. While I feel somewhat left out here, if you follow this forum, the overall car is an obvious winner.

I got a great deal at Maroone in Davie. Earl Stewart was towards the bottom of my list on pricing even though they don't have any dealer fees. When I mentioned that I had at least a half dozen quotes better than theirs they wished me luck and hung up. It seems many of these dealerships are in it for the one-shot deal. Others treat you like a life-time customer.
  • teereevesteereeves Member Posts: 69
I noticed a lot of you are purchasing Limiteds with Dynamic Laser Cruise Control. Since the Dynamic Laser housing is black and throws the symmetry off the fog lamp section, Toyota should have placed a dummy DL on the other side to keep the symmetry. I'm thinking, if I get a Limited it would probably be better to get a Black one, for those of you who have DLC and your exterior color is Black or not Black, please give me your thoughts. Thanks.

The first car I test drove when looking to replace my E320 Mercedes was the Lexus ES330. The LS 430 is way too expensive to use as a business car. The ES330 is a beautiful car in terms of its finish and interior. But I was disappointed when I drove it. The ride wasn't as smooth, there was a lot more road noise, and the ambient noise was much more than I am used to. Having rented Camrys, the only difference is the dressed up interior, slightly quieter, and a Lexus nameplate. The next day I drove the Avalon. It is, in my opinion, a far better value. First, the ride quality and quiet are far superior to the ES 330. The Avalon is also a larger car, more on a par with the LS 430 Lexus. The Avalon has more power and it's very noticeable. I must admit that I do not like the silver plastic doors all over the console and dash. But ride is what is important to me. I ordered the Limited and it has all the toys you get on the Big Lexus. I've traded the status nameplate for a better value. I'll let you know if it lives up to my expectations when I take delivery around mid-April.

"I'd guess Toyota felt that VSC would take away some of the sporty handling characteristics of the Touring model."

Nope, that's not it. Plenty of cars far sportier than any Avalon have VSC. It generally comes with a defeat switch so you can still spin your tires on takeoff if you're so inclined.

Not making VSC an option on XL and Touring was strictly a marketing price/feature mix decision, probably intended to help steer early buyers to the highest profit models. And regardless of what any CSR is telling people right now, I bet they will change this way before they redesign the car.

    Wes:

I have an XM Delphi unit with a VSM (Vehicle Specific Mount) for the Avalon 02. The unit can be takin out of my Avalon, hooked up to my home stereo, and also a portable Boombox. No reason why two VSM could not be hooked up by a competent automotive electrician for you to enjoy SAT radio.

    good luck.

I agree VSC will make an appearance on the XL & Touring sooner rather than later. Toyota has recieved flak about this safety feature and are re-thinking the matter. But so long as the XLS & Limited continue to be the prevalent sellers it might not be that soon.

I have been negotiating with a dealer in Georgia. They have agreed to sell the Avalon XLS for $1500 over invoice. I had originally wanted white, but now am thinking about possibly black or blue. It will be over a week before the white one that I want is available so I've got time to decide.

I went to another Toyota dealer and tried another Limited. It is now apparent to me that for my 6'7" body it is not as comfortable as my 2001 XLS. Also the headroom is considerably reduced due to the sunroof. This I could get around by lowering the seat to the floor. But all in all it seemed like compromising.

I went over to Nissan, sat in a Maxima XL, and believe I have 2" more legroom. Also could purchase without the sunroof so headroom is better. Although this is not the "sporty" model, it is a much more sporty feel than my XLS. Lots of power, some of the dash materials seem just a little too much plastic like. But the "burl" "plood"(plastic representation of wood") is actually quite nice. I got the car for $500 over invoice and $1000 Nissan rebate on top of that.

I hope when it is time to trade in my 2001 Toyota that they start to realize that the population actually continues to get taller not shorter. Also that if they extended the front seat rails another inch, they could accomodate the DRIVER and the rear seat passenger. As it is right now I can sit behind the driver seat set in my driving position and fit comfortably. I do not know why the front seat could not be more accomodating. I am disappointed about the Avalon. However, I am very happy with the Maxima. I think the new Avalon is great, and wish you all a lot of enjoyment with your new cars.
