My dealer (Bracebridge, Ont)has a tentative shipment date of March 20 for the new parts. They don't seem to take it too seriously, the service manager simply said he drives around in a car without airbags...no big deal.
Anybody in Ottawa (I split time between the two cities)know if dealers here have the part.
This seems to be a safety issue, I generally defend Mazda, but they should address this quickly. Shouldn't Mazda Canada at the very least get in touch with all of us. God forbid somebody have a fatal accident.
I really like this car, but @#$%%!!@#*, where's the customer service, not to mention corporate responsibility.

Well, back from the dealership. Told them about the stall situation and since I know about the other 'known' problems, I told them to check my brakes and thermostat etc. They came back to me, and apparently these are known problems but at present there is no solution. NO SOLUTION?? I took misterm's (above) advice but they would'nt replace the rotor or pads..I called Mazda Canada and got nowhere on all probs. It took them all day to find this out...and for the stalling part, they found nothing on the computer diagnosis and the computer in my car did not report a failure. SO?...it still stalled whilst driving!! Gave me the keys back and told me there was nothing they could do on all problems. Both the dealership and Mazda Canada told me this. Mazda Canada then advised that I go to another dealership for a second opinion. WHY? To miss another day of work. Now I don't know what to do...will the car stall again, will my brakes ruin my rotor, and will I be safe driving my car. I don't feel that I will be safe.

According to Mazda Canada (I contacted them concerning this issue) Your dealer should be offering a rental car if you do not feel comfortable driving the vehicle.

I suggest that you contact Mazda Canada since they are aware of the issue, (number is on the website) ask them nicely what the appropriate action your dealer should be taking.

Take the action you feel is appropriate after that.

    Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the rim information. I actually mistaked you for another Edmunds member when I asked about the rims. But it's good to know Bridgestone/Firestone do have rims that fit.

I'm sorry to hear you got the airbag light on too. The full story on this is when the first people got their airbag sensors replaced, the replacements were the same part # as the original (so a few people have had a second failure). Only since early February have dealers received the airbag sensor with the newer part number. This airbag problem is world-wide and Mazda simply doesn't have enough replacement parts to meet demand yet for both US & Canada.

As someone familiar with personal liability suits, it staggers me that Mazda Canada and some of their dealers are not more concerned about this. With all these posts, the information is in the public domain. If they allow you to drive a car with a known faulty air bag sensor without INSISTING on your signing a waiver of liablility, God help them if you are injured in an accident (assuming that God helps you to survive it!).

As to a shortage of parts, it may be a reason but it is not a legal excuse.
  • mazda6smazda6s Member Posts: 1,901
Maybe you just got some bad gas or something.
  • gandrigogandrigo Member Posts: 87
Thanks for the feedback. It's not so much that I don't understand the situation re the limited availability of parts, but more how disappointed I am in the response. Mazda should have notified all dealers and informed them of how to deal with the situation, including offering replacement transportation. The dealers should have notified all owners of affected cars to be aware of a possible crash sensor problem, and should it occur, to call the dealer or bring the car in. The date of arrival of replacement parts should be a certainty, not a guesstimate. In this age of same day shipping, that is not too great a demand. Sure it will cost them more, but that should not be the primary concern.
Personally, I don't really want a rental car, since I am a firm believer in the value of good snowtires (I have Blizzacs on my 3). Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly tickled pink about the thought of no airbags, but I prefer avoiding the accident to relying on crash protection.
I know I could call Mazda Canada, and they would no doubt press the issue with my dealer and arrange something, but should I have to?
Why do you need to fight for customer service after dropping a cheque for more than $25000?
This won't make me swear off Mazda, since I still love the cars, and I know similar complaints are levelled at all manufacturers, but it does take the sheen off the new car experience. sorry for the rant
  • mbennett674mbennett674 Member Posts: 66
Most of the rants seem to be coming from Canada - is this a regional thing? or are owners in the US experiencing all these probs too?
  • wongpreswongpres Member Posts: 422
The airbag issue affects all Mazda3's world-wide (well, except for the vehicles that have been factory equipped with the new sensor).

Because the sensor fails with dirt/salt/water getting into a cracked sensor, and the fact that it's currently winter, it's not a surprise that Canadian's are primarily reporting the failure. However, there have been reports from Canada, US, and Europe.
  • mistermmisterm Member Posts: 7
    zoomzoom,

If you are having so many problems you should check with your government to see if there is any type of legal protection.

I know nothing about how things work in Canada but here in California there is a very strict "Lemon Law". With all of the problems you have had coupled with your dealer's and Mazda's unwillingness/inability to solve the issues you would definately be able to return the car and get a full refund.

Maybe someone one here knows something about Canadian Consumer Protections Laws, if any?

hi i have had my car since dec 11 03. all i really want to know is when these problems started to kick in {miles} my breaks have dust i only have 600 miles on it. my air bag light is staying on longer. I have two children and do not want to drive them in this car if there is chance that the car is going to stall while driving. and by law when there are these many complaints isn't the manufacture suppose to do a reacll. Or do they need to wait for someone to get seriously hurt {the shut down while driving} before they do anything. Here in Pennsylvania same problem 3 times and you either get full refund or another new car. personally i would get a new car and stay away from ford and mazda.
  • jandd1jandd1 Member Posts: 35
I am up to about 1000 miles now and I have so far not had any problems. We picked up the car on February 3.

I too noticed the brake dust scoring but only for about the first week - it is normal now.

Weather could be a issue since there have been dramatic climate changes over the last 60 days from -21 (-5.8F)centigrade to +10 centigrade (50F). But more than temperature the climate change (from wet soppy humidity to dry to the point where everything you touch is static charged) is often tough on cars.

Obviously no excuse for a brand new car to shut down - but factors than more moderate climates.

Also have the cars started selling at different times? I know up here my hatch was available in mid - late January and I believe the Sedan was available in November.

My 2 cents - the only weird thing that I have experienced is a very loud sound that occured while I was in a parking lot moving very slowly.

It was the sound you hear when a stone hits your windshield at a high rate of speed. The sound came from the middle of the car. It forced me to go out and have a look because I thought something dropped out of the sky and hit the car.
I found nothing and nothing has happened since. Just really odd....who knows!

Picked it up 12/30/03; now have 4,000 miles. No problemos.

I originally posted #25 with rear brake rotor issues. On my back rotors I could see and feel noticeable grooves. I took it back to the dealership. They smoothed out the rear rotors and the brake pads and it seems to be better than before and much smoother. This was 3 weeks ago.
That being said the rear rotors are still wearing and showing in a completely different way than the front. Maybe the brake force distribution is off and they apply more to the rear than needed and it needs adjustment. Maybe they just have the wrong rotor on these cars for the rear? Why can't my front rotors be the same as the rear? I will be contacting Mazda and I am due for the 3000-mile oil change. I want some freakin info. No one seems to know what they’re talking about with this stuff.
  • roger341roger341 Member Posts: 59
I checked the rotors, no sign of any raised part # on any of them. My build date is Nov 03.

So at least in my case the brake dust problem in the rear rotors is due to some other cause.

Just returned from the first long (500 miles) trip, and my biggest complaint is the cramped lateral leg room. My right leg presses up against the molding strip around the audio system and I was glad to get home.

I thought the interior dimensions were a bit larger than the Protege, but the way the audio system juts out into the passenger area, it cancels out any extra room there might be.

One thing I have noticed is that the Mz3 won't let you top off the tank. Is this a deliberate design by Mazda? Doesn't take long at all for the fuel gauge to fall below the Full mark.
  • bodble2bodble2 Member Posts: 4,514
Someone posted on another site that the Protege5 was also having similar problems with excessive rear brake wear. The problem apparently was due to the calipers sticking. Supposedly the problem was alleviated by lubricating the pin along which the caliper slides.
  • roger341roger341 Member Posts: 59
I just got a phone call from RDA, a survey group hired by Mazda to ask questions about the Mazda 3.

Lots of questions about owner satisfaction.

I told her the biggest problem was with the brakes.

Anyway, at the end of the conversation she said I could call Mazda to discuss the brake problems. The # she gave was 1-800-222-5500. She said to reference the survey from RDA.

I haven't called yet so it might not result in anything.

Just thought I'd let you guys know.

I've had my strato blue Mazda3 since Jan. 10. After 700 miles, the fuel pump went out, and I was without the car for three weeks. The dealership gave me a loaner and was very nice. Except for the fact that the car had just been washed and had a half tank of gas when I took it in. When I picked it up, the car was very dirty, and the fuel light was on. Today (2000 miles) I noticed that there are dozens small chips in the hood of my car. The dealer told me that they were normal and caused by rocks or salted roads! My old car was six years old and had fewer chips than my brand new car! I was told that this is not covered by warranty, and can't be fixed except to have someone airbrush the chips which the dealership said probably wouldn't look very good!!! Has anyone else had this problem?
  • mbennett674mbennett674 Member Posts: 66
Both of my cars (Celica and Civic) have 100s of chips in the front. There is no way to stop rocks, road salt, etc from hitting the front of your car at 70 mph. If you don't like the chips- get a bra.

I realize that everyone on this board spends a lot of money on their cars, and some of these issues are very frustrating, but I can't help but feel that there is a lot of nitpicking going on. Brake dust happens! Is there any performance degredation? probably not. Document the problem, log a complaint, and forget about it. If your rotors need replacement after 10K miles, then you have a course of action.

My 94 civic had a defective clutch. My 2000 Celica had a broken weather seal, CEL issues and Alignment issues. Hang tight, Mazda will do right by you.

    Hi folks,
I bought my mazda3 in dec and had an air bag indicator problem within a month, i took to te service guy and he ordered a part and replaced it,
now, after some time its the same problem again, I am taking to the service guy. I was just wondering if this problem is with any of u guys before...
  • gandrigogandrigo Member Posts: 87
They probably replaced the sensor with another defective one on the first attempt. I don't think they had the redesigned part till late January. hopefully the part they install this time should be the revised one.

I picked up my new Black Mazda 3 Sport GT on Feb 12th....I love it
This past weekend, I was lovingly handwashing and drying my baby...and I notice some serious paint defects on the hood. I am working with my dealer to find out what this is and getting it fixed ... anyone else notice this? and do you know what it is
  • taylor3taylor3 Member Posts: 16
    Hi,
I am having the same issue with my 3hatch as a couple of others on here #82 and one other. I took out all the cargo trays, checked seat belts, spare tire, headliner... everything, even the tire jack in the left side wall.

After all this and a couple of trips to the dealer where they checked my rear suspension and also greased up the hatch lock and striker (which did quiet down a little), I have come to the conclusion that since it only happens when it is cold outside (or so it seems), that it is the gas charged hatch supports that hold it open. When you have it open, wiggle them a little and that noise may sound familiar to you, just like the popping, rattling noise you experience while going down the road with it closed of course. I have not gone back to the dealer because it is warm here now and they are quiet. At least that is what I am thinking now, because I have practically torn the rear of this car apart looking for it and that is where it seems to be...I have even tightened up the license plate holder by putting a big rubber wedge between it and the hard styrofoam part of the bumper...Anyone else on here have any ideas????? Please help

About the chips on my hood - I actually took my car into two paint/body shop places to find out if I'm overreacting about the paint problems. They told me that it is definitely a problem when there are around 50 chips that go through the clearcoat, the paint, and the extra glaze that I paid for. I have been driving this car for three weeks. I get that rocks will hit my car and that eventually there will be chips, but this is ridiculous. The hood looks worse than the six year old Sunfire that I traded in. And the dealer says it's normal and there's nothing they can do!
  • bodble2bodble2 Member Posts: 4,514
That many chips in that short of time is NOT normal. I never get more than a couple of minor chips over the life of any car that I've owned. Mind you, I make it a point not to drive behind big trucks and I don't go bombing down gravel roads, but still.....

For those who are wondering if they made a good choice with buying a Mazda 3, here is some news that may ease you doubts.

HONDA has announced it is RECALLING 440,000 CIVICS (2001-2002) & INSIGHTS (2000-2002) because the low-beam headlights just fail without warning.

I don't have the total count of recalls on those Civics, but I think it is high (considering it's a Honda).

I will post this in the regular/original Mazda 3 forum and the Mazda 3 Hatchback forum.
  • mistermmisterm Member Posts: 7
Every car manufacturer has recalls. Nothing in life is perfect.

When I recently took my Honda in for service the dealer automatically replaced a few parts that had been recalled for one reason or another.

As a general rule it isn't a great idea to buy a car in the first two years the model is made. Much like a computer program, it takes time to get all the "bugs" out. It is somewhat understandable that many of us are having a few minor problems.

I decided to purchase the Mazda 3 not only because I really liked it but also because it has the same 4 cylinder engine as the 6 and much of the rest of the car comes from other Ford owned companies like Volvo. Besically, the important parts aren't really new.

I have a minor problem with the brakes and it will be fixed soon. So far I haven't read about any truly serious problems with this car.

It isn't your wheel lock key sitting in your lug wrench, is it? Just a thought.
  • audia8qaudia8q Member Posts: 3,138
Your paint problem may have a simple fix, if it's not acid rain stains....we had some very early MZ3 show up with what appreared to be stains in the paint..slight discoleration that did not wash or wax away and it looked like a birthmark.

We had 4 or 5 with this issue...We have a tech who previously work with a highline German brand and he had seen this before. He took a heat gun and essentially heated up the surface and it vanished and never returned. Most consumer hair dryers don't get hot enough to work.

with all the problems you guys are bringing up, is this car worth it?
  • lavaorange3lavaorange3 Member Posts: 128
Yes. There have been thousands of 'em sold so far, and certainly not every one has sustained every problem listed here. In fact, it's the minority. All cars have problems. What I find amusing is how some of these guys don't even own the car and they grouse about this or that: the center stack is too wide - or - they don't like the grill. Fine. As someone who's driven more than 4,000 miles in eight weeks, I can tell ya it's a great car to drive, I've had no problems. You want to live a life with no risk at all, then buy a Camry. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.
  • oldmonkoldmonk Member Posts: 38
The CEL on my lavaorange hatchback came on all of a sudden today morning (car has 3530 miles). This seems to a known issue with Mazda3. I am taking it to the dealer today. I shall post what happens.
  • nne3jxcnne3jxc Member Posts: 134
Also remember that people who are pleased/happy with/satisfied are not likely to be as vocal about it as those people who have had problems.

I've had the CEL and Airbag issues with my 3, but I am happy with the car overall.

I think this year was an unusualy cold weather. We had more salt used on highways than the last 6 years. Maybe your other car never had it that bad for its first Year.

"with all the problems you guys are bringing up, is this car worth it?"

No. You should buy a Honda.

Oh wait, maybe you should read this first:
    http://www.indystar.com/articles/1/125912-9621-031.html

There's nothing quite as exciting as having your headlights totally go out without warning. ;)

I have now reached 5000kms (GT 5 speed sedan)without experiencing any of the problems that have been reported on this site. I notice the rear rotors have some grooves but I only look at them because everybody is talking about it! The car has amazing stopping power. Currently there is absolutely no reason to take it to the dealer. Trust it will continue to be so.
  • volcomknurdvolcomknurd Member Posts: 13
i am thinking about trading in for an M3. i have a 2002 Ranger Edge. Is it worth the trade and hassle you guys are experiencing, or do i just go with the M3 and save a boatload in gas Money? if you guys didnt know, gas is now up to $2.33 for Regular Unleaded here in SoCal, and it isnt about ready to stop going up.
  • gandrigogandrigo Member Posts: 87
Don't know about trading in to get better mileage, My 3GT is less than stellar in that area. otherwise it is a great car. the airbag issue has a fix, just a lack of parts. there is also a fix for the CEL issue. as for the rear brakes, that still seems to be a work in progress. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this car again. We canadians pay closer to $3.00 for a Gallon, and my car is returning about 22MPG in mixed driving, so I sympathise with your fuel econmomy concerns.
  • chacobleuchacobleu Member Posts: 228
Yesterday it was Honda and today it’s Nissan. Nissan is recalling their 2004 QUEST minivan because the FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AIR BAG deploys with a 6 year old type test dummy in the seat.

I am of the school of thought that EVERY vehicle has, at worst, the potential of being a LEMON. The only question remains is what are the chances of buying/driving one? For those having problems with their Mazda (regardless of which one), I'm sure Mazda will do right by you (can't say the same for the individual dealers, though they stand to make a bundle off of mfg's blunders).

  • gazelle2gazelle2 Member Posts: 38
I noted in the mazda 3 conference that, after finally getting my Titanium hatch clean and shiny, I noticed these odd discolorations on the hood, on the left side. Random brownish marks that I first thought were stains of some sort, until I realized they were under the clearcoat. What will the dealer do--repaint the hood or replace the hood? I find the color so striking that's it's hard not to want to get it fixed, even though it's not really that evident to the casual eye.
  • audia8qaudia8q Member Posts: 3,138
go back a few posts and read my reply to mz3mamma...There is no re-painting required and the fix is rather simple.
  • zoomzoomzoomzoom Member Posts: 3
I bought the Mazda 3 cus it got great write ups and won some awards. (propaganda) I was hoping that when I bought this car it would last for 10 years. I have most of the problems that everyone is posting here and I'm glad I'm not alone (not glad about the problems though).

I think this car was built very cheaply. Noway will this car last 10 years. My paint chips very easily, I have that knocking noise in the rear, I've got the high humming noise from the audio area, I've got the brakes issue, thermostat issue, air bag issue...and the beat goes on. For a brand new car, it sucks!! So there are other makes and models who also have their downfalls...it still doesn't make it right that I have these problems with my car. Mazda has NOT done right for me. Basically, this is the car they built. Lemon or not, this is it.
  • roger341roger341 Member Posts: 59
My Protege ES 01 was such a great car that I assumed the new Mz3 could only be better.

So far, after 1000 miles, I'm not so sure about that. The Pro had zero problems and, unlike the Mz3, had a less cramped cabin layout.

Granted, the Mz3 is much peppier and sportier looking.

All in all, however, I wish I had my Pro back. I think my wife does too.

The lesson here is, #1, remember that in lots of cases beauty really is only skin deep. #2, don't buy a new model car of any make until the bugs are identified and ironed out.
  • briggscreekbriggscreek Member Posts: 3
This was my first new car too. I also bought it because of all the great reviews, and because it's really fun to drive. When I bought the car, I realized that there may be some first year issues that would have to be worked out. When the fuel pump went out, I didn't freak out. But this paint thing, and the way the dealership is treating me is not cool at all. I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone about the paint chipping. Please, anyone else with this issue, please speak up! There are things that I absolutely love about this car, but all in all, I wish I had my old car back.
  • gandrigogandrigo Member Posts: 87
I've mentioned it before, as have others, but I believe a great deal of the frustration on this site is due to inadequate after sales service. no question there are some issues with this car, but they could and should have been adressed in a more timely manner than this. I for one would be much more foregiving if my dealership had simply been better informed and more upfront about the issues. there are fixes available for some of the problems and i'm sure others are in the works. All i can say, and this applies to me as well, is try not to let this ruin the pleasure you get from driving these great little cars. Pop open the sunroof, turn up the tunes, and find yourself a nice winding road. the defects will be addressed, it might take several more months, but it will happen.
  • bodble2bodble2 Member Posts: 4,514
"There's nothing quite as exciting as having your headlights totally go out without warning. ;)"

Well, let me think about this. Which would be more "exciting"? Having my low beam go out, which would be kinda exciting if I was driving at night. Or having the engine cut out, which could happen at night, during the day, in an intersection, going down a mountain road, while driving thru Harlum.....hmm...interesting choice.
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
I got a package from Mazda today - big round box - it was a bottle of touch-up paint. So far my paint is fine - but if I do get a few chips I will be ready!

I have had the Mazda3 for about 1 1/2 months (1,500 miles) and with the exception of a little brake dust on the rear wheels during the first 1,000 miles I have had no problems.
  • cdnp5cdnp5 Member Posts: 163
This is where the problem is. I've changed dealers because of this and now take my car 50kms further to get good support/customer service. I find more people are worried about saving 100 bucks and never look into how good the dealer is with service issues. My time is money and if I can't get my car fixed when it should be fixed, I will no longer deal with that dealer. This isn't just a Mazda problem, its a global problem. I'm sure everyone here can name at least one bad dealer in their town. Service issues should be standard across the board but it doesn't work that way in the real world. Its too bad it has to be like that.
