Am I missing something? Based on the lease vs. purchase numbers, it doesn't seem to make financial sense to lease an Altima given the ultra-low financing rate of 0% for 60 months combined with current Truecar discounts.

Keep in mind a 36 month 12 or 15k lease will likely require cash-out for tires and brakes towards the end of the lease, or for the "next owner". Those costs should be amortized into the monthly lease payment which could be another $30-$40 per month. If I buy the car I get the benefit of the new tires and brakes, plus keep borrowing at 0% interest.

Worse, if one goes over the mileage it's a $0.15 per mile charge. The balance owed with minimum down on a loan after 3 years is lower than the residual which means one has the option to keep the car or sell it. Just throwing this out there. Based on 15k but overage to 18k (who knows what happens) the difference between leasing and buying is about $500 over 3 years by my calculations. About the same for Honda Accord. Neither car seems to make sense to lease unless your budget is hinged on $50 per month savings taking into account tires and brakes and some excess mileage, or you know for sure your mileage will be under the maximum..

You are assuming a lot of negatives to skew the numbers towards purchasing. (you'll need tires and brakes, you'll drive 18K/yr on a 15K/yr lease, etc). Those aren't givens. If you are making financial comparisons, you have to make them with known numbers.

If you sell your purchased vehicle after 36 months, I'll bet on leasing being cheaper for those 36 months. After all, the finance charges on the Altima lease are nearly ZERO, as well. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for more than 36 months, you probably shouldn't be leasing, anyway.

Leasing isn't for everyone. If you can't complete the lease contract, according to the terms, then leasing can be surprisingly expensive. For those whose needs are met by the lease, you can sometimes save a lot of money.

Extra miles are deducted from the calculated residual on a per mile basis - not sure of the exact rate for Nissan, but figure .15-.25 per mile.
