Yes all the 2005 kits should work on the 2006s, since they're the same trucks. I recommend getting the 63 or 77 series Airchargers, they're awesome, I guarantee you'll like what you hear.

I'm not sure if I am allowed to show URLs. If you simply enter "undercover tonneau" you will find that lots of people sell this. Versacover is the maker of this lid. The Web-sites have photos to include Tacomas with the lids installed!

I bought mine at fathers day and received a $50 discount -- I paid about $525 shipped to a business address -- free shipping. Shop around if you decide to buy one -- some sites offer free shipping while others do not.

*It attaches into the existing track system
*It took me about an hour to install -- measured locations for track slide-ins and then tightened them down. I did have to go back and make a couple of slight adjustments -- very easy to do.
*I did not have to remove anything except for the tie-down slide-ins
*It overlaps the truck rail lip -- no rubbing
    *It comes with two locks
*It goes on very easy and comes off easy
*It comes with hangers to hang it on the wall
*I've had mine now for several months -- the water proofing strip works pretty darn well (good luck finding something that is completely water tight)
*I had a fiberglass top with my old Chevy -- a real pain in the [non-permissible content removed] to remove and too easy to damage the edge
*This is ABS, and it is durable. I've just used Armoral type protectant on it and it seems to be holding up well (but I must admit -- two months is way too early to know for sure)
*I have a white truck with black trim -- the black cover looks great on the white truck with my black nerf bars
*I'm very pleased with this cover.

The stock tires on my 2005 DC 4x4 (no TRD) look to be very street/mileage oriented - I agree they would probably be pretty ill suited for snow, or even wet bud or the like....

Ok - a little update. I described one of the sounds above as "running water in the dash." Turns out it was engine coolant. I looked under the hood and noticed that pink engine coolant all over the front of the engine block. When I took it in, I found out the radiator had a small hole in it (from the factory) which caused the leaking coolant and, due to a loss of pressure, the sound in the dash. Anyway, problem solved now and all is well. The whistling outside my window ceased too.

My Short Shift kit has been installed...What a difference!! If you have the 6 speed...get this kit!! Nice short throw...no more grinding or missed shifts.I wimped out and had my mechanic do it...he's a buddie of mine...did it for a case of Beer!!
I pulled the console myself..he did the "dirty work" then I reinstalled console.
    ***Total time about 1 hr.
Takes a little getting used to...reverse is the toughest...but getting easier the more I drive.
Heading to the NASCAR race this weekend in VA....be puttin' on about 700 miles round trip... a good long test run w/ plenty of shifts.
I'll report in next week on how it performed.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma and my TEXT button for my CD player doesnt work, anyone have any problems or ideas what is wrong. Or should I take it to the dealer? Thanks anyhelp would be great.
    Thanks Lori

I was told that it doesn't work unless you have the upgraded (changer) system.

Doesn't make sense to me, but I've not had the time to pursue it.
I'm glad you asked, maybe someone else has the answer.

I have the 6 in dash CD changer if thats what you mean? hopefully we can get some help on this...lol :confuse:

You should really just go and test drive a couple.

I like the height of my prerunner (great in traffic as I can see over everything and if I get stuck in traffic I can drive over the median/curb. And tailgaters vanish from view.)

Since I dont offroad (unless a fireroad or two counts) I didn't need the extra cost/complication/more things to break, of a 4x4.

I do believe that the the TRD package has Bilstein (spelling) shocks, where my non-TRD Prerunner does not. Still the same height remember, but just different shocks. (The ride seems just a little bouncy sometimes, but still much much smoother than a lot of other trucks I've been in. And it handles very much like a car.)

But like I started off with...go try some out. That's what dealers are there for. =)

Do you know what that button is supposed to do?? I think it just displays CD text on "properly formatted" cd's. Mine worked in my truck on a burned cd I made. You have to choose "write text to CD" when burning. I have since put an aftermarket head unit in, so I can't go try it out again to tell you....
  • dreddie7dreddie7 Member Posts: 13
The TEXT button will only display track information (song title et al)
if the song file is formatted with that information.

The cd has to be burned with the information on it or the
TEXT button will do nothing at all.

This includes store bought cd's as well as cd's that you burn
    yourself.

Not all store bought cd's have the required info on it.

Personally, I plan on upgrading to a headunit that can play
mp3's stored on dvd's. I know that JVC makes them
but i haven't investigated it any further.

I checked my intake and found this other filter too. I tried to get it out but it seems to be a permanent setup. The K&N fits in O.K. with it in there. I am going to my speed shop sometime this week or early next week and will ask the experts. I'll get back to you then.
  • demoncleanerdemoncleaner Member Posts: 82
That 'secondary' filter on the engine is has been discussed on other forums. It is a filter with carbon sandwiched between. Keeps gases from being released, especially when shutting off truck. Helps make truck ULEV II emissions. Some have taken it off, I've left mine on as I'm in NY where they test emissions.
  • msibillemsibille Member Posts: 275
I have tried it on CDs that I've burned w/ title info and with off-the-shelf music CDs.
Neither gives any data when TEXT is pushed. Both CDs provided the text data when I played them in other (non-mobile) players.

    blutac,

Where in Canada do you live, and where did you purchase the K&N filter?
Is it readily available from local auto suppliers, or did you have to order it?

    len888,

If you don't mind, can you tell us where you purchased your fold-a-cover and what the price was (US dollars?).

I was looking at the fold-a-cover a local dealer today and I'm quite impressed. I haven't made a final decision yet, but I'm leaning towards getting one of these.

    Thanks.

Here's a question for other people who have bed covers and who also want to carry long cargo above the bed. In my case, the long cargo is a windsurfer, which is about 9 feet long maximum.

I may end up having to go with a roof rack on top of the cab, but I am trying to envision some sort of carrying rack that sits above the bed, and which still allows a bed cover such as a fold-a-cover to be installed and operated while the rack is in place. Ideally the rack would be easy to install and remove. Anyone know of anything like this, or do I have to invent my own?

I realize that one option would be to go with a fibreglass bed cover that I could mount a rack system on top of that. I haven't decided if I like that option.

I'm curious to hear what others have done, or any thoughts about this.

Has anyone tried the bed bolts from bedbolts.net as front tie down points? These seem to be better than the factory D rings that can be added, but I'm curious how these would be with the composite bed.

    Thanks.
  • bro45usbro45us Member Posts: 36
The bed bolts of the variety is negligable compared to the overall effect and cause due to the stresses involved. More importantly is the load dispersion carried throughout and the way it is handled both internally and externally by all aspects of the design and function.
  • ronk44ronk44 Member Posts: 35
Thanks for the information -- this makes sense. I actually searched around the forum a bit and could not find any other discussion on this. I removed the factory filter and replaced it with the much thinner K&N -- I would expect to see a gain in mileage at the next fill-up. I can't say that I've noticed any increase in power yet, but it's only been in a few days.

    Much appreciated.

I have an '05 Double Cab with the 5 speed automatic. Sometimes while stopped, I feel the transmission, noticeably shift. Anyone else notice something similar? I've been trying to pay attention to see if it is consistent doesn't seem to be so?

Also, I bought the extended warranty, platinum from Troy at Toyota of Greenfield. For $875 for our 03 4Runner, when the Taco gets closer to using up the factory warranty, I will buy it from him. He quoted me $800 for the '05 Taco DC PreRunner 4x2. Easy guy to work with.

I finally had time to take my 05 prerunner to the dealership to get the windshield noise taken care of. I had them contact Maroone Toyota to find out how to fix the high pitched buzzing sound coming from the front of my windshield. They resealed the entire windshield, but the noise did not go away when they test drove it. The noise was coming from underneith the dash board where it meets the windshield. The solution was a installing a noise kit under the dash. This kept anything from vibrating and so far I have not heard the noise. I have driven my truck up to 95mph in high wind and have not been able to duplicate the noise. It might actually be fixed. Total price for seals and noise kit was $334, but with warranty, $0.00. If anyone else is still having this problem, talk to your dealership about installing a noise kit.
  • ianoiano Member Posts: 2
I felt that yesterday at a stop light. I don't do much city driving and haven't noticed it before but I assume it was the transmission shifting into neutral to save gas.

It's a total guess but I have had the truck down shift automatically on some hills as I was breaking so I think there's a certain amount of intelligence built into it's shifting decisions.

I'm from the Ottawa, Ontario region. I got this through Canadian Tire but if you go on their DRIVER FX website you might be able to save about @20.00. I am going to the speed shop after work today so will have an answer to your question by Monday.
  • gonesurfinggonesurfing Member Posts: 5
I've had a noise that occurrs under neutral throttle or deceleration at highway speeds since I purchased my '05 regular cab, 4x4, 4cyl manual new in June. The noise sounds like a bad bearing, that will "lash" when the driveline is under negative load and seems to come from transmission area. The noise also seemed to dissapear when the bed has a load of 500lbs or so as if driveshaft angle had something to do with it. That being said, this is a pickup and I don't expect it to be as quiet as a cadillac (or Lexus). However the tech at the local dealership acutally agreed that it was not a typical driveline noise and replaced the transmission. I just got a call back today that the truck had a new tranny, but the noise was still present. A call to the tech assistance line suggested to change out the rear differential next.

I'll post the conclusion of this noise fiasco (if there is one), but was wondering if anyone else had noticed a similar noise. I am wondering if it is related to the clatter noise coming from the clutch throw-out bearing which is one of those "normal" noises that every truck seems to have.
  • gonesurfinggonesurfing Member Posts: 5
Just a note if this helps anyone,

My new '05 4cy had a grinding noise that would occur 1-2 seconds after the engine turned over. It would only occurr after the vehicle sat for a day or so.

The dealer (who I don't deal with anymore) finally replaced the starter with a reman unit on the third trip to the dealer. Noise has not returned.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
This has been discussed on other forums. It's normal. Mine used to do but several thousand miles ago it either went away or I got so used to it I stopped noticing.

As for the warranty...that's a good price.
  • borkedborked Member Posts: 23
I have the same issue, I guess I should go to the dealership. I thought it might be the a/c cause I thought it would only happen when I started with the A/C turned on, after its been sitting. horrible grinding noise tho, sounds almost like I tried to turn it over when its already started.

Anyone have any experience or opinions about the Kcovers folding tonneau cover?
    See www . kcovers . com .

It appears that they make a model for the 2005 Tacoma, long and short beds.
Anyone have one of these or seen it in action? Comparison to Fold-A-Cover?
The price seems good, but I don't know what the typical cost of a Fold-A-Cover model is for comparison.

Click on my name and send me an e-mail. I have info on how to disable the door chime, along with some other cool mods.

It is linked to another sites' forums so I can't display the info here.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Mine seems to only do it when I have the AC or defrost on. I think it's normal, but it's still annoying.
  • gonesurfinggonesurfing Member Posts: 5
    If it helps,

The dealer kept playing the "unable to reproduce" card. I finally had to leave it at the dealer and take the key with me so that it would sit undriven for 24 hours. I then had to drive back to the dealer and start it in front of the service manager and technician so they they would admit to hearing the noise.
  • yrffejyrffej Member Posts: 47
our problem with the composite bed is not what you use, but how it mounts to the bed. those bed bolts appear to be much stronger than the d-rings. the best place to mount anything foward in the bed is the existing bolts holding the bed to the frame. the d-rings fit those bolts. with some washers and a sleeve they swivel as the rear factory ones do.... to mount the bed bolts they'd have to be metric threads.

I have an 05 silver 4x4 access cab and have been looking at truck caps. I have looked at the Leer,Century and Unicover caps. Would appreciate any feedback and/or pics of your Taco with a bedcap. I am leaning towards a fiberglass unit but would consider an aluminum cap if it looked good on my truck. The aluminum caps are about half the price of the fiberglass. I definitely want a roof rack for carrying my canoe and kayak. Thanks in advance for any info. Really would love to see your pictures.

I have a Leer 100XL Cap that I purchased in July for Double Cab. I just love it. We drove to Newfoundland in August and slept in the back 4 out of the 16 nights. It looks really sharp and the colour matching to the truck is perfect. No complaints at all. Drop me a line at jessupr at yahoo.com and I can send you a pic.

I saw a silver access cab the other day with an ARE top on it. It looked VERY nice.

I was told I can't lift my 05 Five lug reg cab base model tacoma, more than 1.5 inches without changing springs/arms and all that. Is this true?

I have the Leer that angles up behind the cab to give another 5 or 6 inches high inside. I will send you picks if you e-mail me TRD4D at Yahoo.

Have 05 prerunner, had the same high pitch whistling which I throught was coming from the dash. When really putting my head up there noticed it was actually coming from the top by the mirror. I beleive it is due to the rubber material used, maybe not compatable with the seal.

I have been watching this forum for about a year and waiting for the 06s to come out. I made a deal on an 06 4X4 DC longbed yesterday. It was in transit to another dealer so my dealer traded for it before it arrived. I should get it in a week or so.

One of the things that worrries me is the tailgate on the Taco. I've read a couple of posts here about guys who have bent their tailgate loading a 4 wheeler or motorcycle. I drove up behind a new 05 Taco one night on the interstate that had a motorcycle in the back and his tailgate was bent down in the middle a couple of inches. It wasn't that big of a motorcycle either. One post here said Toyota said the capacity of the tailgate was 200 pounds . . . really? I guess I can't even sit on it if that's the case.

Has anyone else bent their tailgate in normal use?

Is there anything else I should watch out for on my new truck?

    Thanks!

Have you tried filling up with premium?
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
    Hi Channelcat
I was one of people who wrote in earlier about bending my tailgate. I did this back in Dec. with my snowmobile. Toyota will not fix it for you either. I also know of someone who bent theirs from a 4 wheeler, it is so frustraiting. I got a automotive shop to bend it back for me and I screwed a 3/4" thick piece of plywood to it then covered that with rubber matting so you don't know the wood is there. I have a cap now so the sled doesn't go in the back. I added the wood just in case. If you take the tailgate apart you'll see how cheaply they are made with no support in them at all.
  • dockeendockeen Member Posts: 68
Of course, my wife likes the tailgate because it is lighter. ;)

It certainly is lighter and less strong feeling than my B3000 gate was...

  • channelcatchannelcat Member Posts: 13
Thanks for the reply jackhammer. I really hate to hear that the tailgates are that weak. I guess they are built for hauling the trash. Unless I'm mistaken, that is quite a departure from the Tacomas of years gone by. The ones I have known of in the past were tough as nails. I guess I'll have to be extra careful with it.
