    Hi Jackhammer,

Yes, I'd really appreciate seeing photos on the clamps!
I have a Leer 100XL on my '05 Silverado but the rails are much different on the Taco. Would be very interested in what you did with the tail gate. (The Silverado's tailgate is incredibly strong--and heavy.)

    Thanks,

    Woof

    hopefully this will work.
There should be 9 pics in the link below.

    http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/dreddie7/album?.dir=mail&.src=ph

a bunch of other info is below.

This is an A.R.E. 'MX' model truck cap.

The color of the truck/cap is 'indigo ink'.
It has a sliding front window, sliding side windows
(with screens), single 'T' handle and a small light (w on/off switch)
stuck to underside near the door. I can't remember which
of these are standard features and which are options.

The know the light is wired to the truck so that
if the key is out of the ignition the light doesn't work.

I paid roughly $1300 for it.
    I used a costco coupon for a 20% discount.

I ordered in on oct 3, and it was at the dealer on oct 14.
I had it put on Oct 20, 2005.
I called every 2 weeks (since may 2005) asking about the
    availablility of this cap.

With the tailgate down and the cap door up the clearance
    is roughly 38 inches.

    these were taken late evening.
there are a few pics that vaguely show how they attach
    the cap to the rails.
it looks like 4 bolts hold the cap to the side rails.

I'm not sure, but perhaps these truck cap mounting bolts
replaced the stock bolts.....only these were longer???
just a guess on my part.

There is a small leak around the front 2 corners of the cap
that lets in a little water where the cap meets the truck bed.
I lived with a similar leak in my old 91' toyota w/leer cap,
but i'll take this one back to the dealer to fix it in a week or so.
I remember someone else posting a message about an A.R.E. cap
    leak being fixed.

they threw in a small bottle of touch up paint with the cap.
they said it came from the same batch of paint used
    to paint the cap.

i have 4500 miles on my truck and i too have the same issue with clicking noise during acceleration. i took it to the dealer today and he says the usual - "it's normal and may disappear after adding more miles on it, etc, etc." sounds like a more widespread issue than i thought. what have others done to remedy the issue. it just sounds like an old pickup and i can't stand it!

I was the one who earlier in the week mentioned Nitrogen filled tires as the way of the future. Well low and behold I came across a link today that supports my earlier comments:
    http://www.n2revolution.com/vs.html

Who knows how much of a difference it will make but I think I'll try it especially in the upcoming winter months. Remember you heard it hear first ! lol

I put the K&N filter on yesterday and took it down the local muffler shop. I had them weld a Magnaflow 2 chamber muffler in without replacing any pipes, so it looks stock until I romp on it. It sounds so good! Filter= $47.00 Muffler (with labor)= $129.00 Satisfaction= Priceless

I checked at the local dealer today and found out there are 3 volumes to the total maual at $136 each...so I'm going to have to wait for Christmas to get all three unless anyone knows of how to get them cheaper...p.s. I can't believe how freaking loud it is with the exhaust now! I love it!

    Jackhammer,
Thanks once again for the helpful feedback. I'll get some running boards.

    Hi Channelcat
You'll find the running boards easy to install, about a half hour each side. The holes are all pre-drilled. Check at these sites for prices and maybe get your dealer to match

Thanks a lot for the information and pictures. I have an 05 DC, Long Bed 4x4 in the same color.

I have never had a cap for a truck, so I am somewhat more clueless than usual...

I've seen the whole set on Ebay for less...$200 or less I believe.
  • dreddie7dreddie7 Member Posts: 13
I've always had a truck cap since i bought my first
    truck (91 toyota).
For me. the main reason is for protected(ie from rain etc)
storage. now i don't have to keep everything like suitcases, packages
and whatnot in the back of the truck cab.

i've never really had the need to haul around really tall stuff.\
but that is something to consider.
  • dreddie7dreddie7 Member Posts: 13
i got the 3 volume set via ebay for $180.
i also managed to get a softcopy(pdf if i remember correctly)
of the electrical system wiring diagrams.
I don't beleive that those are part of the 3 manual set.
  • dreddie7dreddie7 Member Posts: 13
you could just duplicate the hardware on those sliding tie downs.

something that expands against the side of inside of the rail
as you turn a bolt or knob into it.
  • dockeendockeen Member Posts: 68
One reason I bought what I did was to have an "evacuation vehicle" - one that enabled us all, including the dog to go in one vehicle when getting away from a hurricane - so I am pretty sure I will get a cap for it.

There can't be much of a markup on the cover and if you can buy it locally with the opportunity to inspect before installation, go that way.

Follow the assembly instructions EXACTLY and you will get a weather tight tonno. It comes with 4 packets of 3M hardener which is a binder for the peel strip side rails. With the 6'1" long bed, I could have used an extra packet. Your screwed if the dealer installs it without the binder or runs out. Get some blue painters tape to mark the location of the cover when you go thru the dummy setup phase.

As an engineer, I'm impressed with Fit, Function, Quality, and with a minor work-around was able to keep my cargo divider (toyota accessory) for groceries which my wife places in plastic milk cases behind the cab. The Toyata accessory rubber mat is great too. My guess is that the tonno adds 90lb, the cargo divider 30lb and the rubber mat 35lb to tare and detracts from optimum mileage. Now get 26mpg overall and the 5-speed auto V-6 is solid. I'm at the 5,500 mile mark.
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
Here are some pics that I took this afternoon of my cap both inside and out. I have the Tacoma rubber mat for the back as well but it was out at the time as someone borrowed my truck last night to move a Moose. You can see in the one pic where I added a 3 M strip just under the lip of the tailgate so that the Cap doesn't rub on the gate when closed. In 2 of the pics you can see where I added a 3/4" thick piece of plywood to the tailgate and covered it in rubber matting as a re-enforcement to the tailgate bending on me in the past. You don't even know the wood is there except from the side view. I just love the cap, totally water proof too.

    Hi JackHammer,

Nice cap, who was supplier and at what cost? I'm in Bathurst, N.B.
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
    Hi 054x4dc
The closest LEER dealer for me was in Sudbury, Ontario, about 1.25 hours west of me. I travelled through Bathurst with it at the beginning of August, too bad I didn't know you then ! I paid $2000CDN total for it. That includes carpeted roof, all clamps, installation, front sliding window that is removable, light at the back and taxes etc. Check out this site to help find the nearest one to you:

Anyone know or heard about a way to either remove or up the limiter. At the present time mine cuts out at 180K (125MPH) and I know there is more pedal left. :confuse:

Today I brought my TRD Access Cab back for my only real warranty issue so far, a rattling door latch. Very minor, but annoying. The dealership fixed the latch in about 10 minutes, even though the dealership was flat out busy.

While I was there, I mentioned the rear spring "click". I don't think it's a big deal, but while I'm here, I'll mention it... :D

I pointed out that the 2006 TRD trucks have a rubber pad where the spring ends touch to the service manager. He goes back inside, checks for add-on pads, none are available, no TSBs, either... What does he do? He orders new springs, which should arrive with the pads installed!

No ifs, ands, or buts, just a genuine attempt to make my truck absolutely perfect. :shades:

130 amp alternator comes with the towing package. The TRD package is basically suspension, interior, 110ac bed outlet, and cosmetics.
  • msibillemsibille Member Posts: 275
    You're kidding, right?

OK, just for academic purposes, generally this is part of the firmware of the ECM.
You would have to replace it.
  • msibillemsibille Member Posts: 275
Good luck with that. It's not especially expensive, and it can't hurt, so what the heck.

Of course, you know that you are now obligated to write a formal report to the rest of us on the results... :D:D

180 KPH is approximately 110MPH, but nonetheless they do have a computer controlled shut off at 180/110, I have seen a speed limiter override device available up to 2004 Tacos, so it's a matter of time before there is one available for the 2005's. The computer controller speed shut off is a safety device based upon the maximum sustained speeds that the original tires were rated for, so to exceed that speed, one should upgrade on the factory tires. I have seen posted here that another device is available from a U.S. company that will re-program the computer for more horsepower (probably hurt fuel economy) and also override the speed limiter, it's about $1,000. US.

just got a K&n air filter, woundering any of you that have it experience any improved mpg or performance?
  • yrffejyrffej Member Posts: 47
every once in a while, i respond to one of these k&n posts..... you may feel a little improvement in hp (maby 1 -3 hp), you may experience better throttle responce, and it may sound better at wot. what you have is more air, with less filtration than stock. k&n is good on the track but not for everyday, especially not on dusty roads..... it's your motor, feel free to rebuild it any time.
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
I got a friend to check for me today with Costco and they told her that it would be no charge to fill my tires with Nitrogen. So I'll give it a whirl next week and file my report when I have some findings
  • autobahntacoautobahntaco Member Posts: 9
The easiest way is to simply unplug the drivetrain speed sensor, but then your speedo is inop and you have to use gps to determine your speed wich works better for me because it records max speed. There are also 4 wheel speed sensors, but those are for the VSC (wich still works with the drivetrain sensor unplugged). Be careful dude, above 200kph steering responsiveness is a little sluggish. Also the mileage drops to about 14mpg (american) when driving over 200kph.
  • blutacblutac Member Posts: 27
Thanks all for the replies. I don't know where I got 125MPH for 180 K's. I'll wait to see if Hypertech comes out with something. I have ordered better tires which I will be installing next week. I noticed at 180K that the steering was a bit slow but I equated that to the 4X4. Thanks again for the info...

My 1992 Toyota Pickup has had a K&N filter for at least the last 150,000 of its 202,000 miles. When do you think it is going to need that rebuild?

electrical wiring diagrams - 2005 tacoma

I have a series of PDF files describing the electrical system
    for 2005 tacoma. maybe 50 files...over 300 pages total.
a lot of them are in color. They are linked via adobe acrobat interface.

I obtained it for the stereo wiring.
I haven't read all of the files, but i've seen relay locations,
engine compartment wiring, body wiring, fuses etc.

Damn Jeffry, lay off the Haterade. My '93 BMW 325is had 190,000 miles on it with a K&N and my dad who had it for 5 years before I did, didn't even know what it was, let alone how to care for it. I wonder if the guy I sold it to 6 months ago needed to rebuild the engine yet? I'm guessing no, I loved that car but I love my Taco even more.

The horror stories you hear are from the same people that can't remember to change their oil. Stay away from a reusable air filter if you can't remember where you left your keys on a regular basis.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Hi all, just thought I would report that I have had the metalic popping noise in the left front end pretty much from the beginning(Jan. 05)This forum put me on the right track with the info on the cab mount tsb.I was reluctant to have it done,it seemed like a big job to me.I finally made appointment for mechanic to ride with me,he could hear noise once I pointed it out to him.I still wasn't sure it was the cab mounts, but that is what they had to do first.I just got it back a couple of hours ago,and I'm pretty sure its fixed.I'm kind of excited and liking my taco again! Thanks to all who post, the info you provide really does help people.

Original owner of '83 Toyota pickup reg cab w the 7' bed. Am in the market for replacing this and discovered Toyota no longer makes 7' beds for their reg cab Tacomas. Anyone know when they stopped doing this? Was it with the 2005 redesign, or earlier? Although I love Toyota's reliability will probably go with a Ranger as they're the only compact pickups that come with the 7' bed these days nearest I can tell.

Hey guys does anyone know if the taillights on the 4runners fit the Tacomas? the reason i'm asking is that i was on lunch from work and i saw a 4runner with LED taillights and they looked really really nice... they were just like stock but with LED's and he didn't have just like a LED bulb... i thought it was a FX series from infiniti from far... anyways does anybody know where to get these? and if they're the same as the 4runner? :confuse:

the only hatred going on here is you'all not liking what i've posted. gee, when i bought my tacoma last year, i sold my cutlass and gave away my 1980 dodge van to a friend. the tacoma serves the purpose of both.
you've both posted such compelling arguments about your great k&n"s... NOT!
actually.... my old slant six dodge van had well over 250,000mi, and was never touched by k&n. it did have three transmissions, a few alternators, at least two power steering pumps and other stuff i just can't remember right now..... but the orig engine just takes a likin' and keeps on tickin'..... one man's experiences may not sway an opinion yea, or nay. hell i was the orig onwer of that van and it may be older than you both. this also means nothing......
my opinion come from posts on other forums, where some have taken the time to cut them open, test against other brands with vacume machines and compare results... actually i believe the only one posting better hp is k&n themselves.
use what you want, it's yours...............................

I accede. The local Yota mechanic also cautioned against it because of the oxygen sensor. He said for some of the K and N change overs it has affected it and ultimately affected the performance. I can't say one way or the other. I leave mine alone and get 24 mpg at 70-75 mph. I just drove from St. Louis to Indianapolis and did quite well in mileage.

I took order in March 05.

    Good luck with your changes!

I just placed an order for a 2006 Tacoma Doublecab 4X4 with the TRD Package, side and side curtain airbags and the upgraded sound system. I was amazed (at least in Northern California) that none of the Tacomas on the dealer lots had the airbag option. While I think it is crazy that this is not standard equipment, it seems like a small price to pay for one of the most critical safety features on automobiles today. For those who own a 2006 Tacoma Doublecab, does anyone have excessive wind noise? I drove two of them before I placed the order and one seemed to have a lot more wind noise than the other.
  • sparky13sparky13 Member Posts: 2
I had the same problem on my 05 trd dbl cab w/the clicking in the rear springs, also experienced what some others have during hardbraking the truck feels like someone runs into the back of you when you start to take off again. The fix that I did on it was to jack up the back of the truck to take the weight of the springs. I then took a 26" thorn resistant bicycle innertube cut it into lengths to fit the top of the bottom leaf spring (8-10" pieces). Split the tube pieces in half and with a little bit of superglue to hold them in place made my own rubber pads. Lowered the vehicle back down which compresses the rubber so it conforms to the spring nice and flat. This took care of the clicking sound. (I cut the tube pieces about an 1/8th of an inch longer than the end of the spring). I can now go over speed bumps, driveway, or off road without the annoying clicking sound. The added feature was that I have not noticed the lurching feeling after braking hard anymore. (Almost seems like the short bottom leaf spring is a little too short, when the axle wrap under hard braking occurs it seemed like it would bind against the spring above it) Seems to work fine now, I have tested it several times since and it is very smooth now when you let off the brake and start accelerating. Hope this helps.

Look on e-bay...just saw one there tonight for bidding. With a little luck, I think you'll get all three manuals for less than the $136.

2006 springs have these pads installed at the factory. I walked the lot with the service manager and compared trucks.

The only problem is that the 2005 and 2006 spring are the same part number. The service manager at the dealer (Middletown Toyota/Scion) ordered springs with the plan that we wouldn't install them unless they had the pads. He's already replaced two sets, but the replacements didn't have the pads.

After spending a few minutes with me and listening to my description of the noise, we realized that rust and paint provide cushioning and prevent the noise. My truck, which sits for days without being driven, dosen't click on the first few bumps, and the springs he replaced were fine for a while, He now realizes that the others may come back.

FWIW, this click is so minor, I was almost embarassed to mention it. The large hitch ball wrench I keep under the rear seat makes more noise. The best comparision to the noise is the "jingle" that older Toyota trucks made when they used a chain to suspend the spare tire. I had actually accepted it as one of those minor "truck character noises" that every truck or van I've ever owned has had.

Toyota dosen't offer a retrofit kit, but the service manager planned on passing a contact up the line to suggest one. I'd rather have some pads glued in than have the springs replaced, if possible. We both agree that all parties involved would probably be happier not replacing entire spring assemblies.

I've had other vehicles, a Subaru (clutch), several Jeeps (rear brake fluid leaks), and Nissan (you name it), with MAJOR warranty beefs where I was blown off over and over. "They all do it", "Can't duplicate the issue", etc... The Subaru clutch issue was even documented in several car columns and on the "Click and Clack" radio show.

The oustanding treatment I am receiving from this dealership is refreshing. The purchase was a similar experience in that there were no games, no BS, no "undercoating" hard sells.

Your noise sounds more like the cab mount noise than the rear leaf noise. I'm fortunate enough to have both! Yippee. The rear leaf is very distinct metal against metal rattle. The cab mount is a much more subtle "tink" when going over speed bumps and such or with cab flex. Might be worth at least having them check it out.
  • adventurer1adventurer1 Member Posts: 13
My 05 made the infamous "ticking" noise for the first 3500 miles then gradually got quieter until I no longer noticed it. Gas quality made no difference in the sound and the oil and filter have been changed at the dealer as well. I will try some Mobile 1 after I use all my free oil changes. I currently have 9500 miles with no other complaints. I have a new Gibson ss exhaust waiting for me to install this evening which should be interesting.
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
"Might be worth at least having them check it out."

They already did. It's the springs.

    Again, it's sooooooo minor...

I've had my 2005 Taco for about 9 months now, and I noticed something strange on the way to work this morning. This has never happened, until this point. While driving, into the wind (it seemed), I kept hearing this beeping noise, which I thought was the stereo. I turned off the stereo to find that it was not the stereo, but, a slight beeping noise, whenever the wind gusted. I was doing about 70-75MPH while this was happening. I don't have the front skid plate. The A/C was set to fresh air, and on low. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I was going to switch to recycled air to see if it fixed the problem, but noticed that it had already stopped.
