Sales team SUCKS BADLY!!!! So much so I drove to Frederick to get mine (and even they don't have the best sales). Service used to be good bad has been very disappointing for me lately. They just plain don't take enough time to properly diagnose problems even when I pointed them right to the problem (look for a quick answer) and have yet to actually fix any of the known problems on my truck such as the leaf rattle, bumper mount issue, even a rubbing passenger window which they say the window is properly aligned but the tint is making noise (huh! tint makes noise? :-). I took my truck in for like 8 problems (some minor) anad they were "done" in less than 30 minutes! So anyway they started out good but have really faltered lately. Unfurtunately they are the closest most convenient dealership as it is right down the street from me.

Exhaust is doing fine. Sound is not bad but I have never been a big fan of how a V6 sounds with a free-flow exhaust. You can hear the exhaust clearly while accelerating but at cruising speed it is fairly quiet. Sounds like a sporty/truck at least. Overall I am happy with the purchase. I do believe I picked up some performance but you have to stick your foot to the floor to notice the improvement. Don't expect any changes in performance for normal driving. I have not been able to check milage as yet but I will let everyone know when I do. As for the cost...I am glad I did not pay what a Borla or TRD system costs.

It's my understanding that the new Tacomas do not have this feature. Cutbacks I guess...

I would probably get a hold of the clamps used to mount caps to the Toyota bed rail system from the dealer or a good cap / camper top vendor. Next, I would have a local truck body fabricator attach the clamps to the Trac-Rac rail.

I WOULD NOT attach the overhead stanctions themselves to the bed sides. The Trac-Rac rails will spread some of the weight and stress along the length of the bed.

Without the clamps, I would probably have the same truck body guy use hollow wall fasteners to attach the tracks to the bed. Even though the stanctions won't slide, the rails will help stiffen everything up.

You're going to need a REAL truck body guy, not some moron who does nothing more than clamp caps on or sprays in bedliner coatings. Look for the folks who attach utility bodies, dump bodies, etc... to trucks. They're probably in the Yellow Pages or you can ask at the dealer. The truck body guys probably won't be on the web.

Has any one ever removed and reattached the bed rails?
(i'm talking about the metal track inside near the
top of the truck bed...where those sliding tie downs fit
    into).

    Is it easy to remove/reattach?

I am wondering exactly what is holding the screw in place?
is there some bolt that is 'welded' to the backside of
    the bed?
or if you remove the torx screws some lose bolt will fall off and you somehow have to reattach it to if you
put the torx scre back in?

    Hi Guys,
I just bought a 2006 Tacoma yesterday. I definitly need a shell and was wondering what to get? Snugtop, Leer? I need a shell that will be able to support a roof-rack for my kayaks.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    cheers

One of the options for the 2006 Tacoma Doublecab is side and side curtain airbags. My dealer is finding it very difficult to get an order in with this option. Has anyone else found this difficult? I personally can't imagine purchasing a brand new vehicle without side and side curtain airbags. Shame on Toyota for not making them standard. I would be very interested in hearing from Toyota why they are not only not standard, but apparently very difficult to get even if you want them.

Make sure when you get the cap installed
that you are guaranteed that no water will leak
into the truck bed (regardless if it is because
of a manufacturer defect in the truck cap or the install).

I do not know if this applys to tonneau covers etc.
I am not sure how they get installed.

The reason is this. The plastic truckbed "joins"
the outside metal. The place where the join is in
the front of the of the truck bed (near the cap)
underneath the plastic side rail cap. There is
a crack where these the plastic and metal 'join'.

most cap installers just lay down foam tape to seal
the truck cap to the truck bed.
this tape will lay down on top of that crack.

with the cap installed, water will go through this
crack, trickle into the truck bed. it looks like
the truck cap seal is leaking. but water is coming
    through this crack.

what needs to be done is for the crack to be sealed before
the cap is installed. This probably means
removing the plastic side rail cap or at least prying
    it up a little bit.

I have been told to use silicone to seal this crack.
thay might do it. but i'm no expert here.

Now the installer might say "its not my fault they designed the truck bed that way. the leak is not in
the truck cap....so they will probably charge you to
resolve this issue(whether they should or not
    is a whole nuther issue).

Had a road trip this last weekend, and got a bad case of the "whistling" noise. My wife and I seemed to come to the same conclusion, that it was coming from the front center of the truck, seems like maybe it's wind vibrating one of the pieces of the hood scoop.

It's hard to tell, but around 80MPH, with wind gusting against the direction of travel, we would hear that noise frequently. I plan on checking out the scoop later this weekend, and see if something is loose.

Anyone else have an issue like this?

I took them off to install an access tonnau cover. The nuts will not fall off but when you reattach them you may need to apply pressure to the top of the side bed caps to align the bolts through the holes. I am not sure what the nuts are attached to but they are metal and not the cheap plastic ones that attach the cover on the tailgate

in socal i have ordered a truck w/side air bags. It does not seem to be a problem. i have found many on lots with them.
  • eaglegeagleg Member Posts: 87
    It's the mirrors.
  • nsxwesnsxwes Member Posts: 84
Thanks for the information. It is much different up here in Northern California. I have no explanation for it. One large dealer has over 70 Tacomas on the lot. Many of them doublecabs. None of them have the airbag option. The same is true for every other dealer within 100 miles of the Sacramento area.
  • gandalf1gandalf1 Member Posts: 62
Airbags standard? Not from perhaps the only company that still puts drum brakes on the rear to save a couple of bucks.

But I feel your pain. I am having a similar problem just getting a Indigo Ink DC 4x4. I initially wanted the traction control/downhill assist option and was told they don't send any equipped with that option to SoCal. I was told that a special order requesting that option would take 3 months - IF Toyota would even make it in their two plants that make Tacoma's for this area. Fact or fiction?

Ok, so I drop the special order idea and it's still been a month without them being able to get the Indigo Ink DC 4x4. No wonder most Tacoma's you see are white or silver since that's about all they want to make.

But to be fair, Toyota does make a very nice brochure with all these great colors and options, even if they don't care make them - without the hassle of a special order anyway.
  • nsxwesnsxwes Member Posts: 84
The way that Toyota handles the options and option packages makes very little sense to me. And...you're right, they have a very nice brochure. Someone within the upper management structure needs to take a birds eye view of how they market and sell the Tacoma so it isn't so frustrating to buy what they "offer". If could be that they have so many customers that they can just ignore people like me, but as serious customer, this is poor marketing and poor customer service. It is also frustrating for the dealers as well.

As a long time Toyota fan and the owner of a recently purchased Highlander Hybrid (which is fantastic), I will wait around and do what it takes to get what I want, but it is frustrating never-the-less.

BTW, I have never even seen an Indigo Ink DC on any of the Toyota lots. I did drive a Black Sand Pearl DC 4X4 the other day at my local dealer. It had the upgraded sound system but not the airbags. Nice truck. Oh yeah, I am just trying to get a white one :-)
  • gandalf1gandalf1 Member Posts: 62
Yeah, it comes off as arrogance the way Toyota handles their package options. It's like they're saying, "here it is, take it or leave it..". Of course, since you want white, you're halfway home! ;)

Like you, I'm also a Toyota fan as I've owned several over the years but this stuff sure rings of 'big company aloofness'!

On the bright side, if I ever get the color I want, it will be kind of unique :)
  • nsxwesnsxwes Member Posts: 84
Good luck with the Indigo Ink Pearl DC 4X4. My daughter has a VW Jetta that is a very similar color. In the sun it is beautiful. That color on the Tacoma it will be spectacular.
  • ronk44ronk44 Member Posts: 35
I've seen many colors here in Southern California, but that could be because the Tacomas are assembled just south of the border here -- at least mine was. I must admit, I've seen more white and silver than any other color here also.

I also saw a transport truck last week full of Tacomas and Tundras -- a few blue Tacomas but all of the Tundras were white.

I was in the local dealer yesterday just to look at the 2006 models -- my salesman was there and he commented that every Tacoma he gets on the lot sells within 48 hours. He had 1 2005 and 3 2006 models sitting there and he told me that two people were inside making deals. Two were white, one was silver and the other was tan/gold.

I bought mine in June and they had to roll it back to remove all of the plastic prep covering before I could even test drive it. Yes -- I bought a white one. But I usually always pick white.

It's amazing how many Tacomas I see on the road around here.
  • nsxwesnsxwes Member Posts: 84
Just for the record, here is what I am trying to purchase: 2006 Tacoma Doublecab 4X4, V6, short bed, white with TRD Package, JBL 6-disc changer with steering wheel audio controls, side seat and curtain airbags, towing package, DRLs and carpet floor mats. I am hopeful that my dealer will be able to get one on the way to me within a few weeks, but they are finding it very difficult here in Northern California. I will know more next week. Wish me luck :)
  • ronk44ronk44 Member Posts: 35
Out of the four on the lot I saw, only one was a double-cab 4x4 -- I think it was the 2005 model. One of the 2006 models was a 4-door, the others were extended cabs. I must admit, most of the trucks I see down here in Southern California are 2x4 models -- this is what I bought -- a TRD off-road package. I love it! I could not tell any difference between the 2005 and the 2006 when looking at the outside or when glancing through the window inside.

It's too bad dealers are not able to trade around as much as most would for trucks -- the demand is just too high. They don't want to let them go when they can sell them so quickly.

Good luck -- you will eventually find one, especially white. You might consider going down to Sacramento to look.

I am also looking to get these seat covers for my trd sport tacoma. What seat type did you choose? I think they are type R but am not 100% sure. If you could help me in anyway at all, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am about to purchase a 2006 Toyota Tacoma and just wonder should I get the extended warranty at the dealer or purchase the extended warranty from the Toyota company. Does anyone know if Toyota company offer such warranty?? I know Honda company does and it is a little bit cheaper from the dealer. I appreciated if anyone of you can give me some advice. By the way, I am getting a Tacoma Access 4x2 with SR2 package at $18,200. Is this too much?? This is my business truck.

    Thanks,

I got my DC Prerunner TRD #2 loaded. Airbags were important to me as I have 2 small kids. I live just North of L.A. and the dealer simply did a search. They found one near San Diego and had it driven up. When it arrived, it had even more stuff such as upgraded stereo (JBL), bed divider, bed extender, spare tire lock, and roof racks. Fortunately, my experience was very easy. The only sacrifice to get the truck I wanted was the mileage put on driving it up from San Diego to Los Angeles.

A lot of the people dog on Toyota for having the "set in stone" packages (I was one of them). It may seem like a "if you don't like it, go somewhere else" attitude, but it works well for them (ask the guy that had to wait for them to unwrap one so he could test drive it because they sell faster then they get delivered). Toyota has spent a lot of time and money figuring out what the majority of people want in a package in each geographical area of the country, and that is what they offer in that area. The 4X4 I want in northern Michigan may sit on a lot in Florida for months. That does the company no good. It worked well for my dad when I was younger and he was looking for a Ford. He was patient, and could stand to wait several months until the dealer dropped the prices on trucks that would not sell. I guarantee you, if you want a certain truck that is not native to your area, and you are willing to travel to get it, you will be able to drive it home within a week. A black 4 door 4x4 may not be available in So Cal, but mine was the 3rd one off the truck the day I went looking in Wa (and all 3 sold that day).

I removed mine to install an Access cover also. Just remove the torx screws. Simple and takes 5 minutes.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Do a search on here. I can't remember the name of the dealer but they have the extended warranty for about $800. You can get them from any dealer and you can get it at any point up to the 3yr/36,000 factory warranty expires. Unless your dealer is willing to match that price don't buy it from them.

In Upstate NY, I got my TRD Sport 4x4 w/ everything I wanted, I was going to get side bags. They couldn't. Even a year later trying to build one in my zip code, all models, NO side bags available... VSC as well, not that I would want it.
  • covingtoncovington Member Posts: 8
I just recently went through this issue. Toyota just like other manufactures builds certain trucks for certain regions. This is outlined on Toyota. COM. To prove this you can type different zip codes from California to New York and you will see that as you move across the country different things are offered. If you really want an option you have two choices. You can either work with your dealership to transport the truck you want from another region or you can try to special order. I special ordered and it took about 4 months to get my truck. However I am happy and it is the only one of its type currently in the United States.

Anybody know where the best place to get the TRD off-road wheels, besides e-bay? Thanks.
  • paratrooper82paratrooper82 Member Posts: 41
    Its called Claritin.
  • gandalf1gandalf1 Member Posts: 62
Yes, I understand your point. However, that really isn't the situation now that I've dropped the desire to have the stability control/downhill assist package. Now, it's just the matter of wanting a blue (Indigo Ink) truck, and Toyota determining that we buyers only get (mainly) white or silver ones. I could have had a white DC 4x4 the first day.

In other words, I don't think Toyota figures an Indigo Ink truck would sit unsold for months on a dealer's lot in SoCal. It probably comes down to them being able to sell every Tacoma anyway, so why hassle changing the paint in their spray guns any more often than necessary? I mean, they DO make some trucks the color I want, just not enough. One salesman guessed Indigo Ink trucks were not more than 2% of their production.

If anyone knows of a truck like I want anywhere in CA, please let me know!

Check some of the forums. Lots of guys/gals sell them after they upgrade.

I picked up front seat covers at WalMart. Good fit, good quality. The grey pattern is almost identical to the front seat fabric. They come 2 in a package.

Has anyone had a problem with the finish on the truck chipping easily, love the truck but my mirror case paint is chipping and below one of the doors and a crack in the paint along side for no reason did I get the lemon or what.
    Thanks for anyones help

You're kidding? All that talk about wind noise from the mirrors? I wonder why I just noticed it after 9 months of driving...

Guess there's no fix to that, huh? Did they change the mirror design for 2006 to combat the problem?
  • tacotechtacotech Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the reply volley, I'm sorry that I didn't clarify myself at first. I was actually talking about the Ivan Stewart TRD wheels. Thanks again.

Ah gotcha! Good luck! Let us know if you find some. I hear the Ivans are hard to come by these days. Ebay or maybe TRDparts4U might have some...

I heard the wind noise for the 2nd time in 9 months today.80 mph into a 50 mph wind.Maybe it is the hood scoop, sounded like the middle of the truck.Let me know if you figure it out.

I'm looking for a round tube class III hitch. has anyone found one for 2005 double cab tacoma? I like the round tube hitch because it gives the truck a sporty look but all the manufactures have just told me only the square hidden hitch is available... does anyone have a match from another vehicle that is compatible with my tacoma. thanks...

Exactly how do you get the ditch molding off? Type of tools required and how does the new molding attach? Is it like double stick tape or what? Thanks.
  • bowen1bowen1 Member Posts: 12
see what u-haul has to offer. they have hitches also.
  • ronk44ronk44 Member Posts: 35
I really wanted one of the round tube class 3 hitches also, but I gave up looking a few months ago. I talked to a dealer back in Ohio who searched for a couple of days. All he could find was the Hidden-Hitch type square ones. There are some manufactures that make custom hitches -- not sure how much weight you are planning to tow -- this might be an option for light loads.

I needed to tow a trailer, so I went ahead and bought one or the square ones. My neighbor and I put it on with his air impact wrench. It took as a while to get the bolts all lined up and then it was 'fun' realigning the back bumper. But it works really well.

    Good luck.
  • ustazzafustazzaf Member Posts: 311
I don't think it is the not wanting to change colors. Silver and white are colors that do not attract heat as much, so that is what they send to Southern Cali. Up here in Washington, silver is outstocked by red and black. White is almost impossible to find. Not much demand, so they don't send them. As for Indigo ink, I don't think I have ever seen one. Guess they went East. I checked the inventory in Panama City, Fl. They have 5 Indigo, 3 silver and 3 black in stock. No white or red. Crazy...
