I WOULD NOT attach the overhead stanctions themselves to the bed sides. The Trac-Rac rails will spread some of the weight and stress along the length of the bed.
Without the clamps, I would probably have the same truck body guy use hollow wall fasteners to attach the tracks to the bed. Even though the stanctions won't slide, the rails will help stiffen everything up.
You're going to need a REAL truck body guy, not some moron who does nothing more than clamp caps on or sprays in bedliner coatings. Look for the folks who attach utility bodies, dump bodies, etc... to trucks. They're probably in the Yellow Pages or you can ask at the dealer. The truck body guys probably won't be on the web.
(i'm talking about the metal track inside near the
top of the truck bed...where those sliding tie downs fit
into).
Is it easy to remove/reattach?
I am wondering exactly what is holding the screw in place?
is there some bolt that is 'welded' to the backside of
the bed?
or if you remove the torx screws some lose bolt will fall off and you somehow have to reattach it to if you
put the torx scre back in?
I just bought a 2006 Tacoma yesterday. I definitly need a shell and was wondering what to get? Snugtop, Leer? I need a shell that will be able to support a roof-rack for my kayaks.
Any help greatly appreciated.
cheers

that you are guaranteed that no water will leak
into the truck bed (regardless if it is because
of a manufacturer defect in the truck cap or the install).
I do not know if this applys to tonneau covers etc.
I am not sure how they get installed.
The reason is this. The plastic truckbed "joins"
the outside metal. The place where the join is in
the front of the of the truck bed (near the cap)
underneath the plastic side rail cap. There is
a crack where these the plastic and metal 'join'.
most cap installers just lay down foam tape to seal
the truck cap to the truck bed.
this tape will lay down on top of that crack.
with the cap installed, water will go through this
crack, trickle into the truck bed. it looks like
the truck cap seal is leaking. but water is coming
through this crack.
what needs to be done is for the crack to be sealed before
the cap is installed. This probably means
removing the plastic side rail cap or at least prying
it up a little bit.
I have been told to use silicone to seal this crack.
thay might do it. but i'm no expert here.
Now the installer might say "its not my fault they designed the truck bed that way. the leak is not in
the truck cap....so they will probably charge you to
resolve this issue(whether they should or not
is a whole nuther issue).
It's hard to tell, but around 80MPH, with wind gusting against the direction of travel, we would hear that noise frequently. I plan on checking out the scoop later this weekend, and see if something is loose.
Anyone else have an issue like this?
But I feel your pain. I am having a similar problem just getting a Indigo Ink DC 4x4. I initially wanted the traction control/downhill assist option and was told they don't send any equipped with that option to SoCal. I was told that a special order requesting that option would take 3 months - IF Toyota would even make it in their two plants that make Tacoma's for this area. Fact or fiction?
Ok, so I drop the special order idea and it's still been a month without them being able to get the Indigo Ink DC 4x4. No wonder most Tacoma's you see are white or silver since that's about all they want to make.
But to be fair, Toyota does make a very nice brochure with all these great colors and options, even if they don't care make them - without the hassle of a special order anyway.
As a long time Toyota fan and the owner of a recently purchased Highlander Hybrid (which is fantastic), I will wait around and do what it takes to get what I want, but it is frustrating never-the-less.
BTW, I have never even seen an Indigo Ink DC on any of the Toyota lots. I did drive a Black Sand Pearl DC 4X4 the other day at my local dealer. It had the upgraded sound system but not the airbags. Nice truck. Oh yeah, I am just trying to get a white one :-)
Like you, I'm also a Toyota fan as I've owned several over the years but this stuff sure rings of 'big company aloofness'!
On the bright side, if I ever get the color I want, it will be kind of unique
I also saw a transport truck last week full of Tacomas and Tundras -- a few blue Tacomas but all of the Tundras were white.
I was in the local dealer yesterday just to look at the 2006 models -- my salesman was there and he commented that every Tacoma he gets on the lot sells within 48 hours. He had 1 2005 and 3 2006 models sitting there and he told me that two people were inside making deals. Two were white, one was silver and the other was tan/gold.
I bought mine in June and they had to roll it back to remove all of the plastic prep covering before I could even test drive it. Yes -- I bought a white one. But I usually always pick white.
It's amazing how many Tacomas I see on the road around here.
It's too bad dealers are not able to trade around as much as most would for trucks -- the demand is just too high. They don't want to let them go when they can sell them so quickly.
Good luck -- you will eventually find one, especially white. You might consider going down to Sacramento to look.

In other words, I don't think Toyota figures an Indigo Ink truck would sit unsold for months on a dealer's lot in SoCal. It probably comes down to them being able to sell every Tacoma anyway, so why hassle changing the paint in their spray guns any more often than necessary? I mean, they DO make some trucks the color I want, just not enough. One salesman guessed Indigo Ink trucks were not more than 2% of their production.
If anyone knows of a truck like I want anywhere in CA, please let me know!
Thanks for anyones help
Guess there's no fix to that, huh? Did they change the mirror design for 2006 to combat the problem?

I needed to tow a trailer, so I went ahead and bought one or the square ones. My neighbor and I put it on with his air impact wrench. It took as a while to get the bolts all lined up and then it was 'fun' realigning the back bumper. But it works really well.
Good luck.
