I've test driven a few Doublecabs without the JBL stereo, but am wondering..what size is the sub, and where in the cab is it?

Glad you're enjoying your Taco, adventurer1, but one thing...it's really, really, REALLY not a good idea to run in 4wd on dry pavement...

Part-time 4wd systems require front to rear axle slippage to prevent transfer case bind. There is no differential in the transfer case to relieve the pressure. If you run 4wd on dry pavement, there is no slippage due to the high traction, and so your transfer case is under HUGE amounts of stress and binding. A part-time 4wd system should only be put in 4wd in extreme low-traction situations, such as ice/snow, sand, mud, etc. I've known guys who run 4wd on wet paved roads, and even that isn't a good idea. When they turn corners, you can feel the vehicle binding up...

Keep it in 2wd on pavement...Use 4wd for off-road or emergency situations only, and save a trip to the stealership. They don't give transfer cases away...or driveshafts/u-joints/axles, etc.

I used to agree that driving on pavement in 4 wheel drive was bad until I bought my Tundra. I could shift in and out on pavement at up to 45 MPH (the book even said I could) without any kind of noise, jerking, vibration or any other problem at all. Of course that was in a straight line or very minor curves. In fact, I have reaqd that it is advisable to drive locked in if you think there might be ice patches. With that said, putting the vehicle under high stress and speed on the race track in 4X4 is a total different story. Even a couple trips down the strip should not be enough to need a trip to the "Stealership" though. Just don't reccommend it often. Also, don't reccommend taking sharp corners locked in.

With my previous Mazda B3000 4x4, I would engage 4 wheel drive on occasion of wet pavement - it never seemed to have any detrimental effect.

My Tacoma seems much smoother in that mode.

Agreed, for example, driving in lake effect snow bands, one minute whiteout, next minute sunny, then back in the thick again, in matter of few miles. I'll just leave it in 4 hi. Think it would be worse to constantly shift in and out. My Tacoma isnt exactly 'buttery' when shifting on the fly, much like my old Ranger. If on highway, I'll slow to 40 or so. Going in straght line wont kill it, use common sense if turning on dry...

I agree that running 4wd on pavement can be an issue with stress on the system if there is a difference between the front and rear wheel speeds, such as turning sharply in 4wd, on asphalt. However, driving in a straight line should not be an issue. Front and rear wheel speed will be the same. When I made a pass down the 1/4 mi, I switched to 4wd while in the staging lane, made the pass and then switched out of 4wd before I turned off the track. In other words I was going in a straight line the whole way. The truck drove normally while making the pass. Anyway I just wanted to see what it would do and don't plan on making this a regular event.

Still squeak free! the rod end from master cylinder should be snug up against the clutch lever. Mine was a little loose and between snugging that up and applying grease to the contact point between the rod and clutch lever seems to have resolved my issue. Hope this helps!

I think it is like a custom sized 7", or it might be an 8". The enclosure houses the built-in amp and it takes up that whole storage area behind the fold forward seatback on the rear passenger side.

So, if you have the JL sub you only have storage on the drivers side.

I paid $230 for the 2WSS-AS brand new on Ebay, and then the install was about $250. The transponder to fool the "Engine Immobilizer" was another $40.

Seems funny that the install costs more than the actual unit, but it is a lot of work to properly install an alarm and remote starter on newer vehicles. Lots of safety and security stuff to get around.

Does anyone have a cold air intake? what kind is it? because i was thinking about buying one but dont know kind i should get :confuse:
  • bowen1bowen1 Member Posts: 12
k&n filter charger kit seems to be the most popular.
  • blutacblutac Member Posts: 27
The way the intake is manufacturedit is already a type of cold air intake. All I did was put a K&N drop in filter. My speed shop said that a complete system would look nice but was it worth the $400.00+ for asthetics.

They come with 265/65 R17 tires which means they are 265mm, or 10.4 inches wide and 30.6 tall.
  • tnt67tnt67 Member Posts: 30
The Wheels are 7 1/2" wide. Last post was the tire size.

Volant just came out with a sweet intake for the 4.0 liter Taco. I'm not sure if their website is updated to show it, but it is certainly out now.

I did my own intake mod. Cost me about $5.

"With my previous Mazda B3000 4x4, I would engage 4 wheel drive on occasion of wet pavement - it never seemed to have any detrimental effect."

I do this with my 4x4's that don't go offroad. I was always told by trustworthy mechanics that running the 4WD occasionally on wet pavement was good, as it spun non-moving parts and spread lubes around. The offroaders use 4WD frequently enough that no exercise is necessary.

This is the same thinking that had many folks using a/c for a few minutes in the winter. Nowadays, most a/c systems kick in automatically in defrost mode, so no regular use is necessary out of the a/c season.

2005 Tacoma with 5200 miles, CHECK ENGINE light (not the MAINT REQUIRED light) came on and Speedometer and all three odometers not working. Truck runs fine, shifts fine, everything else works fine (except I did notice my clock was showing the wrong time). Any ideas what might be causing this? I was planning a trip this Sunday, and dealer said they wouldn't be able to get to it before then, so I am thinking of going anyway and just not having a speedo. Any help is greatly appreciated!
  • boone88rrboone88rr Member Posts: 194
Gas gauge and tach still work? Sounds like you may have lost your speedometer sensor. Either the sensor itself is completely shot or you may have a short and it just shut off and the check engine light came on to prevent any further damage (like a fire or ruining the components around it). I don't think it's anything too serious, these trucks are pretty intelligent in protecting themselves. Obviously it will be covered under your warranty. I'd get it checked out ASAP but I don't think your doing any harm by driving until it can be fixed. Best of luck.
  • wundrinwundrin Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the support. Yep, gas gauge and tach still work. I slid under and checked all of the connectors going into and around the tranny, but not sure which is actually the speed sensor. They all looked good from visual standpoint. And since it hasn't thrown the tranny into "limp mode" I don't think I'll do it any harm either. I do wonder though, if the brain is keeping track of the miles traveled and will update the odometer once it is repaired???

After browsing some websites of dealerships in and around Charlotte, NC, I've found that some 2006 Tacomas come equipped with an optional "Interior Light Package". It is listed with a code of "IL10". This is not an option for the Tacoma as listed on Toyotas main website. I emailed one of the dealers and the reply I got was:

"The Interior Light Package is an option installed at port, not a factory option."

Installed at port? I thought Tacomas were built in the US.

Is this a regional option that may not be available in other areas of the country?

Can anyone shed more light (all pun intended) on this option?

Thanks in advance for all your help!!
  • loopheadloophead Member Posts: 2
All Toyota sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina & South Carolina are distributed by Southeast Toyota Distributors (SET). The options you find in these states may very well be differnt than the rest of the country. SET is the largest privately held Toyota distributor in the world. It was started by Jim Moran in October 1968, roughly 1 out of every 5 Toyota sold in the US are sold by SET. The really great thing for consumers is that we can see the enitire inventory for SET live. Simple go to buyatoyota dot com and build the truck you want and you can search the inventory of available trucks for all South East Toyota dealers. When I was searching for my truck I found it first here copied down all the exact information before contacting the dealers for quotes.

The dash kit is 50 bucks and comes will everything including the wiring harness to connect toyota to aftermarket. I have a double din model with a JVC dvd Player and a 7" Clarion LCD screen in my 2006 4x4 double cab. Easy to install. would recomend
  • dockeendockeen Member Posts: 68
I had something similar happen on my Mazda shortly before I sold it (had about 117,000 miles on it). It was in fact a sensor.

My odometer was mechanical, but I would assume even for a non-mechanical version that the miles you put on will be "off the books" in some sense.

Got a rear leaf spring tick? Bring it in!

Yesterday, my dealer installed replacement rear leaf springs on my '05 TRD Access Cab (about 5k miles & 9-10 months old). I don't know if 2WD or non-TRD 4WD vehicles use the same rear spring

Details on the new springs: They DON'T click and they DON'T have rubber pads. The bottom leaf has been reshaped to avoid slapping the leaf above. The leaves themselves look thicker than the originals. These appear to be version 3 of the spring. Version 1 clicked, 2 had rubber pads, etc...

The part number is the same, as in there is ONE part number for the correct '05 & '06 leaf spring for my truck. The new design should automatically be used to fill the dealer's order. The parts guys were not able to order a new or old version.

Some 2006 trucks have rubber pads attached to the leaves, this appears to have been an iterim fix.

The tick was so minor in my truck, I actually had to point it out to my wife, and she missed it a few times. :D I mentioned it in passing at my dealership's service manager (Middletown Toyota), and they totally broke their [non-permissible content removed] to make it right.

The truck is totally, absolutely freakin' PERFECT now.

I love this truck, Toyota's support, and the dealership.

I have a Jeep that had identical problems to the Jeep I owned _10_ years before it. Toyota appears to work extremely hard to correct problems on an ongoing basis. What a concept! :shades:

I put blue LEDS in the corner markers and LED windshield washers on. I electrically attached the washers to the corner markers so they compliment each other. Looks good at night. Also, we in Canada have daytime running lights and I put high intensity bulbs in them. Almost don't need headlights at night. Also, did you think of rewiring the driving lights so they come on WHEN you want them to and not just on low beam headlights?

It seems to be a little 'chilly' in Paid and Buying forum, I turn here.

Don't know anyone(or friends) here bought a Toyota truck recently. What is the interest rate for a loan approximately in the current market? My credit score is in good range, the dealer threw me 9.5% and I was shock.

    Any info will be appreciated.

I purchased my Taco on 11/8/05. Dealer offered me 5.9% for 60 months or 6.25% for 72 months. My hubby's credit union was fortunately able to get us in at 4.25% for 60 or 72 months.
Not much left in the way of zero%.... :(

I did mine for 9 to 10 minutes with no problems. Then once it's out of the oven use a small screw driver to pop loose some of the little tabs, then start pulling/prying on a corner. Once it starts coming apart just keep pulling.
Make sure you aren't leaving the oven On. Once it gets up to temp turn it Off and then slide the light in there and let it sit.Just be sure to set the light on a piece of cardboard.

For those of you doing this mod to the headlights, you don't have to take off the rubber weather stripping that seals up against the hood. The heat doesn't hurt it.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Yeah, there is an old post about doing the driving light mod. It's easy. You can also search for the fog light mod.

The main one is message #3532

Has anybody installed the Daystar 2 ½" suspension leveling kit on their tacoma? How does it look, ride, etc...? Is it easy to install yourself? I have the 2005 tacoma Dbl. cab 2 wheel drive. Thanks.
  • 054x4dc054x4dc Member Posts: 14
I just (yesterday) had the Daystar 1.25" Lift/Leveling kit installed on my 05 DC Sport 4x4, and it leveled the truck almost exactly. My guess is that the 2.5" lift will make your truck considerably higher in the front than the back. Shop installation was about 2 hours and you will need a wheel alignment afterwards. I really like the way the truck sits now. I haven't noticed any handling or ride difference, I bought the upper lift kit, supposedly the lower one will stiffen the ride/suspension. It's basically just a 1.25" nylon spacer that mounts on top of the shock tower with longer bolts than original. I posted here earlier how I disliked the lower front, so I hope this is my solution. My last truck was a 2002 GMC Ext Cab 4WD, and I had the Daystar 2" Leveling kit installed on it. To me it improved the handling of the truck considerably and definitely improved the looks. When braking, I found the front nose dived, and leaned in corners. The kit eliminated all of this, made it a much better truck and gained a little ground clearance. If I encounter any probs with my Taco, I'll post here. I also just ordered the A.R.E. cap, expecting Dec 1 delivery (my dog will be happy), I'll post here my thoughts on it.

I am getting the same same mileage. Is your truck a v4 or v6?? I have a new 2005 v4 tacoma expecting to get close to 27 mpg on the freeway and going 60 mile/hr with the tailgate down have been only able to get 23/mpg. Does this seem reasonable??
  • steveh427steveh427 Member Posts: 25
It is a myth that you get better gas mileage with your tailgate down. Keep the tailgate up for better mileage.
