I think what it comes down to is what you want the truck for. If you want to go off roading get the off road package and if you just drive the truck on the pavement the sport is fine. The color coding of the bumpers and mirrors are on the sport and so is a hood scoop. So whatever you think looks better is what it somes down to. I have a fully loaded Off- Road Double Cab because I live in Arizona and go off roading. Also I thought it looked better. I think the color coding of everything can be a little boring and I think the hood scoop is a little cheasy. The tires on the off-road are better but you can always change those. It all comes down to your needs and personal preference.

Does that Gibson stainless steel exhaust carry any kind of warranty like lifetime mufflers? What is the policy?

That makes sense for cold start but what sense does it make for the rest of the time?

I just got a new digital camera so when i get a chance i will post a pic, but when i installed the wire for the attenna i had to remove the top brake light, which broke the seal on it and feed it through the hole and under the headliner inside and ran it down to behind the rear seats. I had to use clear sealant to reseal the brake assembly to insure no leaks will accure, and so far no leaks, total install took about 1hour and fifteen minutes. hope this helps, it beats paying 50 bucks for an hour worth of work. I have had mine installed for about 3 months now and love it, went home for thanksgiving(800 miles round trip) and never missed a song, had music the whole way, it beats changing stations or cd when getting in a new area. :)

Thanks man, I was thinking that was how you ended up doing it. When I get the PIE box and switch in, I'll mess with pulling the 3rd light and re-running the wire the way you did it. Luckily there are plenty of places once inside the truck to tuck the wire.

I'd still like to see how you mounted your tuner etc.

Also, did you run dedicated power to the radio or does it use the accessory jack (the way mine is set up for now)?

After reading about this issue here I started paying attention to mine as I shift. It doesn't actually rev up as much as holds it's revs for a second after you depress the clutch. It seemed to quit after it had been drove a while. I'll have to pay attention again when I return home tonight.

To be honest, I will have to look and see what the warranty is. Since the system is stainless steel and I live in the south, corrosion should not be an issue.

I am looking to buy some JL XR 650 speakers to put in my 05 Tacoma DC. These component speakers cost $399 at Tweeter but $255 at an online store. How reliable are these internet based audio stores? Is there a warranty issue I need to be aware of?

I ran the power cord under the side of the carpet to the stereo because it plugged into the back of the unit, and i just sat the tuner box in the storage area behind pss rear seat, have plenty of power cord and attenna wire so if i need to move it i can easily do it, good luck on the install and get back to tell us if it worked out.

I read several posts here that mention disconecting the battery for a short period of time after installing various after-market accesories which alter engine performance,
to let the computer adjust to the new parameters imposed by that equipment.

I read one post that mentioned a full gas tank worth of computer time for it to adjust to an intake mod.
Does anyone know just what processes the computer evaluates and how long it's expected to take to readjust to various alterations?

Thanks again. I got the 3-way switch today, but still no PIE connector, so hopefully next week. :)

I originally posted on this problem a while back. It seemed as if the cab mount bolts fix was it as it went away for a while. It is back the same as before. Sounds like a hammer hitting a piece of wood every time I go over bumps. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger side front wheel. Does anyone know what the problem is or how it was fixed. I've been driving with it like this for a while as I haven't had time to take it in. Thanks

Hi Folks :) Just curious. I was thinking of installing a Pioneer AVIC D1 in my '05 Taco DC bec I was interested in the navigation system.I 'm not sure if it'll fit, but www.scosche.com is giving me hope.

    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_3151_218219118,00.html

Will replacing the stock stereo / cd player unit disable my keyless entry system & remote alarm? Honestly, I can't live w/ out keyless entry.

    Thanks!

So I'm driving down the freeway and hit the a/c button. I get a sound like a dog whining/crying for about 15 seconds, and then the a/c button light begins flashing.

I turn it off, wait a minute, then turn it back on. I get no sound the second time, but the light starts flashing again and I'm gettin' no cold air.

This is an '05 2.7. I don't see anything in the owners manual telling me what to do. Is it time for a service appointment?
  • buffalonickelbuffalonickel Member Posts: 113
Would appreciate you checking. The concern I have in Missouri is humidity and I thought that perhaps that may be a factor where you live. Was the Gibby as heavy as the monolitic toolbox sized OEM muffler the truck was endowed with at the factory?

I'm getting a 06 Tacoma and had a question about the hood scoop. I've seen many posts that state it is fake and non functional. From my understanding the purpose of a hood scoop is to allow more air flow to the engine cabin for easier intake. If my understanding is correct then you just have to unbolt the plastic blocker. If not correct, someone please explain, and what the function of a real hood scoop is.

  • cmytaco1cmytaco1 Member Posts: 2

    Toytruck,

I have to go to a dispostion hearing in Philadelphia in December. If you don't mind me asking, how much did they settle for??? and if you are not comfortable telling me, was the lemon law worth the hassle???

Can't say but if you look up the base MSRP on a double cab 4x4 and divide by 2 you will be very close. That includes attorney fees.

the primary function of the scoop would be for cold air induction, for the carb/throttle body. i suppose it may allow air into the engine compartment if it was vented that way....
  • dieselfreakdieselfreak Member Posts: 3
So I have had a my bran new 2006 4x4 double cab for 8 days and went out last night with some friends to a local bar at which there were hundreds of people. While I was in the bar somebody decided to do the unthinkable thing of kicking the rear panel of my truck right behind the rear wheel and right above the trd offroad sticker  . At the time I had no idea what to do and I quickly reached up between the bed and the panel and knocked the dent out, the only problem is that now the metal is dimpled and the paint cracked. If anyone has any advice on what to do I would greatly appreciate it.
  • ujbrakrujbrakr Member Posts: 10
Does that mean the air on a functioning hood scoop is taken directly to the intake instead of the whole engine compartment? Would that even make a difference? Why is the Tacoma scoop concidered fake?
  • cudzee1cudzee1 Member Posts: 1
I am getting close, got it bad! Has anyone found the ride between the trucks are a lot different. I have read that the TRD rides stiff. I will test drive both but I was just wondering.
  • vincewood30vincewood30 Member Posts: 48
It sounds to me like you'll have to take it the body shop now that the paint is cracked. They'll have to most likely sand it down and do a blend on it. They'll be able to take care of the dimples also. They're is a special way of getting dents out without cracking the paint. I am owner of So Cal Dent Doctor. Depending where you live though it can be a bit expensive depending on the size of the dent. I get anywhere from $65 to $300 for 1 dent depending on size. But I also do alot more like windshield repair, scratch/scuff repair, detailing, headlight restoration, interior repair and I'm completely mobile.

    Good Day,
Is not that the scoop is fake well it is there! but, the scoop do not allow air to enter the engine compartment. there are four screws in the inside that i think you could remove it and remove the plastic. well I think that they means that the air flows into the engine bay when it is functional, but I would not advice re directing the air straight into the eng. at least in a raining day that angle and the size of it it would inject too much H2O.

    fig.
  • yrffejyrffej Member Posts: 47
on our trucks, the air wouldn't go directly to the intake... actually our air intake, is in the pass fenderwell away from the engine heat. theres multiple influences happening with airflow arround a vehicle. although colder air to the intake is almost always better. a true ram air affect doesn't happen without a blower. (your intake sucks more than you can force air down it at speed with just a scoop...) also, if you open a scoop to the engine compartment the low air pressure under the vehicle responsible for pulling air through the radiator and over the engine may be compromised. the scoop air may bypass the radiator, heating more rather than cooling. (but you'd probally need a wind tunnel and a load of temp probes to test and adjust.)
but some have done it... you could turn a garden hose on the engine, and short of directly filling the intake we'd be ok....

The TRD Offroad has BOTH an e-locker and LSD.

The biggie for me was tires. I air down the tires in some of the places I head off the road. The OR package has a taller sidewalled tire on a smaller rim that is better when aired down. Lower profile tires tend to lose beads when run at low pressures. However, lower profiled tires usually handle better on dry pavement, 'cause they lean less in corners.

The Sport has a fake hood scoop, OR has a flat hood.

toyota.com and the brochure handed out by dealers has a nice feature comparision chart.

just a thanks for all the great running board - nerf bar replys. i found it very helpful.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
The TRD Offroad does not have both a locker and LSD. I think you meant to say that the TRD has both depending on which you choose.

    TRD Offroad= e-locker
    TRD Sport= Limited Slip

By the way if there is anyone on the east coast that would like to trade their silver sport hood for a silver non-sport hood please let me know!

"The TRD Offroad does not have both a locker and LSD. I think you meant to say that the TRD has both depending on which you choose."

I know what I meant to say, and I swear my '05 Access Cab (OG package) has both. I'll pull out my window sticker when I get home.

Here's a similar package (without towing) for this year:

    "OC Off-Road Package #1
Includes power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, black power mirrors, cruise control, sliding rear window with privacy glass, chrome grille surround and rear bumper, color-keyed front bumper and overfenders, metallic tone I/P, upgrade fabric, leather wheel and shifter, sunvisors with mirrors and extensions, SR5 badging, driver's seat lumbar support, off-road suspension, Bilstein shocks, 16" x 7" alloy wheels, P265/70R16 tires, locking rear differential, limited slip differential, fog lamps, skid plate (engine/transfer case), 115V/400W deck power point, sport seats and TRD Off-Road graphics."

Maybe the 05's are different, but the 06 has either the locker or limited slip. Not both.
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
I was quoting the '06 TRD Offroad (OC) package from Edmunds.com. :) Do you own an '06 Offroad?
  • ujbrakrujbrakr Member Posts: 10
I have the TRD performance exhaust and I want to get a nice intake system as well. Do you think the low pressure area you described would be disrupted with one of those? I hope Toyota isn't stupid enough to include a scoop that would compromise good air supply to your radiator. Do you know of any formal info from Toyota I can get on this subject?
  • toytrucktoytruck Member Posts: 67
Here it is from the Toyota site--
"TRD Off-Road Package (OC) -- SR5 Package #2 plus off-road tuned suspension with Bilstein® shocks, 16-in. alloy wheels with P265/70R16 BFGoodrich® Rugged Trail T/A tires, locking rear differential, engine skidplate and fuel tank protector, front tow hook, 115V/400-watt deck mounted power outlet, multi-function overhead console with compass and temperature gauge, sport seats with sport fabric and driver's lumbar support and sport fabric, and TRD Off-Road graphics (V6 models)"
  • yrffejyrffej Member Posts: 47
the scoop as many have mentioned is for looks, non functional. a performance exhaust or an under hood intake shouldn't change any air flow. some have opened the scoop to allow air to enter the engine compartment. there's a guy on another forum who posted pictures of his intake and after the scoop was unpluged. he has a blue xrunner, search you'll find it....

Just a follow-up to inform what it was:
Dealer replaced the Combination Meter Assembly (the entire speedo/gauge unit in the dash), which is one of the possible failed items pointed to by the P0500 code that it was giving. total part and labor was $335.31 all covered under waranty (plus free rental car)
By the way, the miles I logged on my trip were free also, as without that circuit working there is no other way for it to record miles traveled - the odometer just continued from where it had stopped working once it was repaired.

The Tacoma X Runner at SEMA had a supercharger that used the hood scoop. Maybe Toyota has it there for a future TRD supercharger addon.

When the locker is "unlocked" it is a limited slip diff.
  • phippiniphippini Member Posts: 9
Has anyone put one of these in the new Tacoma? I was told by the sales person that Toyota does not recommend a block heater. (Why wouldn't you want to have heated anti-freeze enabling quicker cab heat-up.)
Any opinion on specific brand that works well with the Toyota would be appreciated.

    Thanks
  • gandalf1gandalf1 Member Posts: 62
I see that somebody else already responded but to answer your question, no, I don't own an 06 w/TRD Off Road. However, I do have one on order - the Indigo Ink Pearl color that I whined about previously.. ;) and have a ton of printed material that indicates the you either have the LSD or E-Locker depending on the Sport or Off Road package.

That said, it almost seems like I read someplace early on that you could have both! If so, it was probably a missprint.

But I've been wondering if it's even mechanically possible to have both in the same unit.
  • boone88rrboone88rr Member Posts: 194
That would be one large rear differential. Somewhere in the neighborhood of twice the size of the current one. You wouldn't even need a rear axle!

I've found that the Edmunds site isn't the most accurate for information and specs. Might want to at least 2nd source your info before quoting something that is obviously an erroneous description.
  • ustazzafustazzaf Member Posts: 311
Not only does Toyota reccommend the block heater, it is an available factory option in some cold areas. It is the oil and engine block that you want warmed up so it is thinner for easier start and better lubrication. It is just an added benefit (and needed to heat the oil) to have the coolant warmed up.

i just bought a I-4 taco 05 access. i noticed that it was quite lower and had no fender flares compared to the V6's. also the wheels are smaller. i wanted the bolder look with an I-4 cause i commute a lot and only the 4x2prerunner offered that higher stance with an I-4 but it was manual. so now im trying to convert the small taco into looking like the V6 model. any suggestions? what is the main difference in configuration? what lift kit/tires are the best?
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
"That would be one large rear differential. "

    Umm.. Why? :D

    http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm
    http://www.4x4wire.com/reviews/no-slip/

The two devices aren't mutually exclusive.
  • boone88rrboone88rr Member Posts: 194
"The two devices aren't mutually exclusive."

In the Tacoma they are. :D

The type of locker Toyota uses will not accomodate a clutch type LSD setup. Too small. That's why you don't have both. Go right ahead and put in an aftermarket combo. If anything you have the VSC package that has an electronically "simulated" LSD and the computer applies braking to the wheel of least resistance so that power is transferred to the opposite wheel. Those are available in addition to the TRD OR package.

I have the same rig. It is a little wimpy looking, to be honest. I drive a lot of miles, and do not want to change the vehicle dynamics unless it translates to equal gas mileage and a ride equal to or better than (smoother) stock. I get 25-28 on the freeway, and it rides just fine. You can go all day.
I was thinking early on (I bought in July, already have 16,000 miles) Fender Flares and the plain old 16" Styled Steel Wheels along with a front end alignment would do the trick. From a dealer it would be pricey as H E double-toothpicks, IMO. Could be wrong. Good luck with whatever you decide!
