You only need about 1 1/2" to level the truck if you do nothing to the rear. The Daystar is 2.5" which will have your front end sitting about an inch higher than the rear. The coilovers are wayyyyyyy more than you want to just level the truck out (1 1/2" of lift).

As for your warranty. The dealer can't just say "oh you have a lift that voids your warranty" and neither can Toyota. They have the burden of proving that whatever problem you are having (IF you have one) is specifically caused my the aftermarket product on the truck.

I have an '05 Tacoma TRD Sport with 6-speed MT. At completely random times, the transmission "pops" out of gear and back into neutral while driving. There appears to be no pattern to when it happens. The engine could be cold or hot, towing or not, under accleration or cruising. Of course the dealer could not replicate the problem when I brought it in for service and so the problem persists. Is anyone else experiencing this problem. The cure is simply a matter of engaging clutch and placing it back in gear - but this should not be happening. Any ideas/suggestions ?
    Thanks.

Has anyone changed out their fog lights from white to amber? Is it as simple as changing the bulb? I have amber on my car and it really cuts through fog much better than white.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Yes, all you have to do is replace the bulb. Personally, I use PIAA bulbs. They last a long time and have nice color. For an amber color choose their Plasma Ion. For the fog light bulb size you need a 9005/9006 HB.

I got mine on Ebay. They are still kind of expensive, but they are the best bulbs out there. I got Super Plasma for a white/purple color

Here's a set of PIAA HB Plasma Ion on Ebay right now.

double-check your owners manual. because the foglight bulbs should be h10 type, or 9145. also in the 55w range.... you can install anything that fits but ...... i'm using nokya hyper yellow #nok7626

I had a 97 tacoma that did the same thing. Never would happen when the dealer had it of course. They checked it over and couldn't see anything to cause this strange occurance. I sold the truck last year with 140,000 miles on it; it really was not a problem.

I've heard from several people that if you want to get some instant traction in sand/dirt, deflate your tries. The TRD off road package BFGoodrich tires say 29psi for front, and 32psi for rear, what do ya'll recommend I deflate my psi to? Thanks.
  • bro45usbro45us Member Posts: 36
I used to go 4 wheeling alot in the sand and we would deflate the tires down to about 12 to 15 psi and it made a HUGE difference in the traction on sand. However we always carried a tank of compressed air to reinflate the tires before getting back on the hard surface to drive home, else you'd ruin your nice new tires. You could even use one of those plug in the cigerette lighter hole mini compressors or if you have the TRD SPORT like me you could even strap in a small 110v compressor and use the 110 outlet in the box and inflate all your buddies tires also in no time flat...no pun intended hahaha

Looking into adding a Sub and an Amp to my existing Tacoma system. Anybody familiar to the matching of watts between the sub and amp. I am seeing the peak power #'s and continuous power #'s on both and am unsure of the proper way to match them up. Any help would be appreciated..Thanks

    Hi,
I just purchased my new Tacoma and can't stand the stereo system, but don't want to give up the steering wheel controls. Does anyone know of a way that I can install a new stereo yet have the steering wheel controls still be functional? I looked at crutchfield.com to see their steering wheel controls adaptor, but haven't heard from any Tacoma users about it. Thanks in advance for the help!

I just recently purchased a 2005 Tacoma with the cargo divider as an accessory. I'm unsure how to move it along the rail bed properly. There are two knobs on each side (one which goes in the bed rail and one on top of the divider) of divider which I adjusted but was unable to move the divider along smoothly.

Anyone experiencing similar problems or any is there anyone who knows the specific function of each of the turning knobs.

    Thanks

The vast majority of claims paid out by Royal & SunAlliance (Final Coat is the administer) are for manufacturer's defects.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Sounds like you have it fitting in there too tight. Loosen up the knobs on top to let the brackets slide in a little, then tighten them back down. Then just loosen the lower knobs and it should slide. Sometimes the nuts that tighten against the knob, inside the rail "hang up" on notches in the rail. Feel under there and straighten them up.

I am still having an occasional hard start problem in mt TRD Sport 4X4. Dealer has been unable to replicate due to the randomness of it. Anyone else have this problem?

My stock 265/65R17's are about done at 15,000 miles. I am in the market for a good tire with excellent all weather traction and a long treadlife. Any suggestions based on experience?

Went to replace my air filter today. Toyota wants $21 for this. Going to shop at the local auto parts shop for a better price on one. Any recommendations on quality filter for $10-$15?

    THANKS.

I have amp and sub in my taco, the way i did it is i have 500 continous watts sub and 300 continous amp, had a 500 continous but sonmething happend to it does work right, just make sure you match the rms rattings or you will blow your sub, the amp will acutally put out a little more that advertised, if you look at the spec sheet inside the box, right now I am running a rockford fosgate sub and amp, and sound great, has a nice thump to it without being overwelming, the peak wattage of the sub is 1000 watts and 900 for the amp, hope this helps and wish you get a nice sound to your taco. :shades:

I was going to get goodyear fortaras, they have a life of 60000 miles and have silent armour technology, but the dam tire store sold them to another customer before my appointment so i got pirelli scorpions, but still alot better then the crappy dunlops. About the air filters you can check autozone, checker or your local auto store and they should have a decent air filter cheaper than the dealer.

I would reccommend the Bridgestone Dueller AT. Had them on my Tundra and was very impressed with the wear and traction. Also smooth riding and quiet. Have also had great luck with BF Goodrich ATs, but have not had them on a Toyota. My experience with the stock BFG Long Trail TAs would turn me away from BFG if I did not know better. Traction in the sand is poor with them. I think it is the tread, not the Toyota or BFGs in general. Do not get the Bridgestone Dueller APT from Sears. They are a special stamp just for Sears and they ride horrible. Suposed to be the same as the AT, but they lack quality. I had them on my 95 Tacoma and 02 Tundra. Tok both back and got the ATs.

Thanks for the info..That helps alot. I have owned Fosgate before and was looking at their amps and subs. Are you using the factory Cd player? I was wanting to power the sub with the amp alone, and leave the factory speakers running from the CD player.Sounds like you have a pretty good setup. Thanks Again!

I always just buy good quality subwoofers like JL Audio or Kicker Solo that can handle lots of power, but I never worry about over-powering them. The more power the better. In my Saleen Mustang I had 1400 watt RMS going to a JL Audio 18W6 that was rated for 800 watts, I think. That sub ate up all the power I could send to it. Still bumpin' after 5 years.

I've built plenty of systems with this method and have never blown a sub. The more power you have the better controll you have over the sub. Distortion is actually more damaging than over-powering.

The system I'm puting in my 05 Tacoma is two Kicker S8L7 (8") (1000 watts peak) wired into 1 ohm and powered by a Kicker SX1250.1 which puts out 1400 watts RMS.

I want to be able to charge my cell phone when my tacoma is not running. I want to modify either the 12 volt aux power outlet or the cigarette lighter to stay on even when the engine is off and the key is out. I would rather not have to pull apart the center console to get at the back of these two outlets. Is there a way to modify them from the fuse area under the dash or under the hood?

    thanx,

    missazx,
I am have not been able to find any radio that utilizes the controls. I do have a question for you though. Do you have the upgraded stereo 6disk changer? If so would you be willing to sell it if you have it replaced?

I am looking to install the factory 6 disk radio if I can get one.

    Thanks

I will soon be wiring my tacoma for trailer lights and I need to know what the tacoma's wire color is for the running lights (brown on trailer wiring) and the tacoma's brake light wire color . I will be using a generic converter for the turn signals. Does anyone have experience as to where a good place to tap into the trucks wire harness is?
    thanx

Both TRD packages come with Bilstein shocks, one "sport tuned", the other "off road tuned". What is the difference between the two? Specifically for on road driving. Thanks!

Tires- "about done at 15,000 miles" ? I think that I'd find out what's causing the tire wear before I bought my new "good" tires. Even the worst tires installed by OEM should give you far better than 15k, unless there's an alignment problem, inflation problem, brake problem, differential problem, or serious abuse. Getting a "60k tire" won't get you anywhere near 60k if the problem(s) isn't fixed. Is there uneven wear, if so, that will give you hints w/ regard to alignment or inflation errors.

Air filter- as noted, pick a reputable mfr of aftermarket filters from any of the aftermarket parts stores. I happen to be a fan of Purolator, but there are plenty of good filters out there with avid fans.

Click on my name and send me an e-mail. I have a link to a site with info on making the power outlets ON all the time. The moderators won't let me post it here, since it involves another forum website. Whatever.

Fujitsu is the company that makes the radios for Toyota, and Fujitsu also makes aftermarket Eclipse radios. Many Eclipse radios will plug right into the stock Toyota wiring, including the steering wheel controls.

If you don't want an Eclipse head unit you will need the PAC SWI-X which will make any headunit work with the steering wheel controls. You can Google it online, or ask for it at a car stereo shop.

A good place to get to the wires is under the door sill of the drivers side. Just pull the plastic piece up, and pop it off. There are 2 bundles of wires. The wires with all of the trucks lighting is the bundle that turns and goes under the drivers seat and out of the cab through a grommet that you can reach under the carpet and feel.

If you want to know which color of wire does what, just take off the tail lights and look at the wiring going to the bulbs. There are two 10mm bolts in the tailgate jamb that hold the light on, then you just pull out kind of diagonally and it should pop out.

I've driven on sand with as low as 9 psi. Firmer stuff is usually in the high teens.

With low pressures, GO SLOW, otherwise you'll damage a bead or wheel.

I am thinking about adding just a sub woofer and amp and leaving the stock speakers and stock c d player ( I do not have the JBL) .
I can't spare any room because my kids sit in the back. Are there any sub woofers that come in really small and or flat cabnets that could fit under a front seat or behind a back seat?
By the way, where is the factory sub in the JBL system? ( maybe I could replicate the jbl factory cabnet ?) Thanks
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
You can easily fit an 8" sub enclosure behind the back seat of a double cab. I wouldn't try to fit anything under the front seat. There is some wiring, brackets, slider lever, and heat vent under the seat.

Check Ebay or TacoTunes.com for a prefabed enclosure that will fit behind the seat of a double cab.

The stock JBL sub enclosure fits behind the passenger side rear seat. It takes up the whole side. I wouldn't recommend it. It's not that great.

I think there are several people on TS that experience not necessarily a hard start just a longer start than they are used too. Toyota says it is normal though.

As for tires. I have Nitto Grappler ATs and love them. They wear evenly and have been great in wet weather. 4 days straight of rain has given me a chance to test them! Haven't had a chance to see how they perform in snow yet, but they have gotten good reviews on snow traction.

As for the air filter, I was in Auto Zone yesterday and noticed that they finally have one listed in the catalog. STP makes one and I think it was $14. I'm sure Puralator, Fram and others will follow soon with one as well.

Wondering which Dash Kit to buy, Scosche or Best, and why?
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
The Scosche is color matched and built better. The trim around the radio is nicer. I think there is some more info in the 05 Tacoma Stereo upgrade forum.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Also note that if you can't find an air filter for an 05 Tacoma, the 2003-04 4-Runner 4.0 liter uses the same air filter as the 05 Tacoma V6.

You are asking for trouble splicing into the wiring of the truck. There is a connector up under the back that comes apart. Just get the t-connector from most auto parts stores with the factory connections already attached. A few more bucks now will save a lot more down the road.

Finally located a distributor for the east cost, BSA of OHIO. No sellers close to where I live. Under these conditions, BSA arranged to drop ship direct from factory. Notge there are 2 sizes for the '05 Tacoma. Mine is the longer one, 6'1" to fit the Access Cab model. One potential problem going into this is having to work around the tightening knobs above athe cargo divider located behind the cab. The cover arrives this week UPS.

Does any one know where I can find these parts on line? I am looking at purchasing a stock 6 disk changer and the steering wheel controls for my 06.

I have had the 06 tacoma for a week and I love it! Double Cab Sport 4x4

Fold-A-Cover is the better choice of any other tonno out there for 2 big reasons: First, it's rigiid design is load rated, and, second, it has front and back access at the same time. I am expecting mine this week. LIke any of the tonos, I will have to figure out a work around to clear the upper tightening knobs on the cargo divider(Tacoma Accessory). The factory specialists were just great getting me in touch with nearest distributor. The cover for the -05 comes in 2 sizes, short and long. Mine is the 6'1" longer unit to sync fit the Access Cab model. Good hunting.

i've gone out on the beach in NC (outer banks) and didn't deflate b/c there was no place to put the air back in nearby, although it did fine, i'll definately try letting air out next time. There are some interesting links off off the one below...

"There is a connector up under the back that comes apart. Just get the t-connector from most auto parts stores with the factory connections already attached. A few more bucks now will save a lot more down the road."

Many hitch providers, such as eTrailer, will GIVE you the connector if you buy a kit with a drawbar, pin, ball, etc... Using the bumper? The "wye" is probably under $10US, retail, at any local parts place that sells hitch accessories, although they may need a couple of days to get it.

Splicing is just plain the wrong way to do this. Do it right, do it once.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I'm not sure what the technical answer to your question is, but the off road suspension is stiffer than the sport so I would think the difference is in the shocks. Don't know what the difference really is other than one is stiffer. For on road driving the sport should be the better ride (although I have the off road...)

I have a 2000 F-150 Supercab and will be upgrading soon. I really like the Tacoma DC and the idea of having a manual transmission again. One of my concerns however, is the size of the truck. I wonder if having had a full size truck for 5 years and then moving to a mid/compact will leave me feeling cramped. Has anyone made this type of switch? What are your impressions? Thank you for your input.
