Whenever you do any performance upgrades to the engine, like a different intake, be sure to disconnect the ground on your battery for about 10 minutes to let the computer reset. It will recalculate and work better with the new parts. :)

    Good Day,
Yesterday I tried to look for the msg with the mod (the one that you could energize the lights independently from the head lights)but I had to go. Today I ask for assistance, any feedback will be appreciate.

There shouldn't be any problem moving the sport wheel package to any other 4x4 model. The overall heights are the same. the sport package uses a larger diameter wheel 17" with a shorter tire vs. the 16" wheel and taller tire on the other 4x4 packages.

Does anyone else,s 2005 tacoma blow a puff of blue smoke when first started. Mine does sometimes, just every now and then. Has 7700 miles. The dealer says this is normal but I havent had any other new vehicles do this. Also some mornings if it is damp the brakes will squeal when backing out of driveway then it stops. They say this is caused by rust building up on rotors overnight.

I've got the Gibson Cat-Back single exhaust on my DC 4x4 Sport Automatic w/towing and it is not really that loud, just has a agressive growl tone, cost $525. CDN plus tax. I did not disconnect my battery after installation. I notice an improvement going from third gear to fourth, it shifts at full throttle at 145 KMPH. Before I put the exhaust on it kind of went flat about 135 or so and took some time to get to 145 before shifting, now it pulls strong right through third and hits fourth gear with authority. It fixed what was basically the only performance issue I had with the truck.

On another note I towed my 29 foot travel trailer (no slide out) which has a dry weight of 3600 pounds with no apparent problems.

I have a 05 with the V6 with about 5k miles. No blue smoke on startup. That does not sound normal to me ether. I might expect to see that at 100k. Maybe checking the compression would be worth doing.
  • westeemwesteem Member Posts: 49
What did you pay for your 63 series? Is the difference between the 63 and 77 series just the chrome?
  • az comaaz coma Member Posts: 19
Haven't seen any blue smoke out of my '05 DBL cab V6 4x4 w sport TRD package. I also have >7000 miles logged. You might want to check your oil level and see if it's decreasing. Not good to be burning oil at this stage :(
  • msibillemsibille Member Posts: 275
05 Taco DC w/ approx 5200 miles. Nope, and not on any other vehicle I've owned that didn't have near 100k miles or engine damage (84 Ford Range piece of junk being the latter exception).

Blue smoke only at startup is likely to be oil leaking down valve guides. Though it could be a head gasket issue, it's most likely from the head(s). (Blue is oil, white is water or coolant, black is rich mixture.) I agree - not normal and not good.

If it were at other times (for example, warmed up, on decceleration or heavy load) it might be rings or head gasket or valve guides. But if it's just at cold start, it sounds like oil has leaked down into one or more combustion chambers. (It won't leak uphill past the rings.)

i've done the mod different from most.... i bought a new fog light relay from napa, and modified the relay not my fusebox.... you can find posts about all fog light mods at ttora forum. within the mods posted are actual '05 electrical prints on a post from a user named gargoyle...... good luck and search....

I have 11000 miles now on my taco and no blue smoke for me either , me too have never had a new car do that, however it is normal for your brakes to squeal every now and then for reasons you said.

I paid $228 total from an ebay store for the 63 series. I couldn't find anyone selling the 77 series online for cheap, so I ended up with the 63, and I'm happy. It retails for around $399 on the K&N online store. Although I haven't seen the 77 firsthand, I've read the installation instructions on the K&N website, and it is almost identical to the 63s installation. So yes, they're basically the same, only the 77 is made from metal.
    Here's the part #s
    K&N 77 Series High-Flow Performance Kit Part # 77-9025KP
    K&N 63 Series Aircharger Part # 63-9025
BTW, you can get the 77 in chrome, or grey.

Adding to the comment, for some reason, the 63 series aircharger delivers a 10.31 hp @4978 rpm increase, and the 77 series slightly less at 10.17 hp @ 5174 rpm. Why? I don't know. I would have thought the more expensive one would have performed better. This is all off the K&N website.

For anyone considering using synthetic oils for your Tacoma there's some good info to consider here: http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

Along with my Tacoma, I've been using Mobil One synthetic oil in all of my vehicles with great results since it came out 30 years ago. I change the Mobil One every 8000 miles with a filter change at every 4000 miles (Mobil One filter).

I installed the shifter on thursday and what a difference it makes. One down side for me is that much more force is needed to engage reverse than was required before. Has any one experienced this same issue?
Though installation is not difficult the 15 minute time indicated is a bit short. Installation requires the removal of the cup holder, storage box console and forward portion of the console just to get to the shifter. Once the shifter assembly is knocked out and the plastic bushing is uncorked then assembly can begin. Clam shell spacers are installed along with a new ball tip that is slid over the old one. Two small grub screws hold the new ball tip from falling out. For me the biggest pain was staking the grub screws. I hope they don't fall out in my life time. The old plastic bushing is recorked and a spacer plate is installed in between the shifter assembly and the transmission that raises the finished shifter about a half inch higher. Over all the time I needed from gathering the tools the rtv silicone and the red locktite for the grub screws and putting everything away took me about 2 hours. 1-6 shifting is greatly improved and is a must if you have ever touched teeth when shifting. I only wish there was an easy way the shorten the clutch pedal stroke.(hinting to URD) the existing travel is a bit much. I know its a truck ;)

Will I be able to use my factory wheels with the coil spacers. And does anybody know of anybody in the Worcester Ma area that would put them in.
  • medium_almedium_al Member Posts: 4
    Hi Totoyoma,
I just installed mine couple of days ago, same comments regarding istallation time and staking of the set screws. Reverse is a little harder to engage but the overall feel 1-6 is so much better. 5-6 shift was always dicey before, had to really pay attention or I'd grab 4th. That is gone now. Very nice kit, good instructions, and high-quality feel after installation.

Related issue: I frequently get the impression starting from a dead stop esp. when cold that the clutch is either slipping a little or not engaging properly. I don't get this feeling in higher gears. Anyone else have this problem? This is unrelated to the short shift kit.

Can someone tell me if the V6 TRD cat back exhaust is a 1-piece unit or several pieces you have to clamp together? Has anyone got dyno numbers/charts on any kind of exhaust or exhaust-header combo?

    Thanks.

Does the TRD cat back exhaust come straight out of the back? Or out the side as it does stock?

I purchased a 2005 Tacoma 4X2 in July. I work with a Scout Troop and had a hitch installed by a local garage so that I can tow a small trailer we use to transport gear on camping trips. My Tacoma Owner's Manual, page 295, indicates that my vehicle is "equipped with a wire harness stored in the rear end under body". I have been under the truck a few times now and I am convinced my vehicle has no harness installed. Anyone have experience with this?

unfortuneately the 63 series is not street legal in california...it was the first to the market because they bypassed having it legalized...if it's not legal in california for smog and such (when the chp gives you a fix it ticket to remove it) then I don't see how it could be legal in to many other states either...this is from k&n website-"Street Legal in Most States (not street legal in CA) and 63 Series Intake Kits are not legal for street use in some U.S. states." So the difference between the two is more than what they are made of (metal and plastic)

I doubt the CHP is going to be snooping under my hood. Have you had a CHP officer ever tell you to pop the hood? I love California, I hate its liberal legislators. Heck, the natural fires out here put out more pollution than all the vehicles driving around here. They should make a law making natural fires illegal for smog purposes, and write mother nature a ticket (trying to cite god would be politically incorrect).

A buddy of mine on cardomain.com has the trd exhaust, And about the KN air kit for the tacoma. Dudes not smog legal we dont have to smog our trucks for a long time by that time theyll be legal. And plus how many shops care? LOL im getting the 77 series soon. For a good price check them out here http://www.hopupracing.com/enpe70.html. and for my budys page check here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/845097/2 just scrool down. The trd exhaust is shipped one piece no welding. I have a magna flow exhuast on mine way cheaper and i feel more punch : ).
  • lonwlonw Member Posts: 29
In California, on a new vehicle, after a few years you'll have to pop your hood for a smog inspection. I think it's either 5 or 7 years after it's a new vehicle that the smog inspections start to occur every 2 years thereafter. That's when discovery of your installed K&N equipment will occur and if it's not certified street legal, could become a problem for you, unless you swap back to the original equipment before each inspection.

The converter/trailer harness is an option. (Obviously there is a wiring harness that is part of the rear underbody, but the trailer connector is part of the option.)

I don't have the manual here with me, so I can't look of the page you reference, but are you sure it doesn't say something at the beginning of that section or page like "if so equipped"?
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Yes you can use the factory wheels. Just take the coilovers off yourself then take them to a local tire or strut shop to have them compress the coil and put the spacer in. Take them home and put them back on yourself. You'll save a lot of $$$ that way...

How was the installation process? Is it easily self-installed or did you take it to a garage/dealer?
I have a mechanic friend who installed the cold air kit on a 1997 Gm full size and it took him two hours, he is happy with the performance boost be he also finds it very loud at full throttle, also could it suck in water or snow in off road use?

    Thanks

What kind of impact if any should one expect in ride quality. My truck is three months old and it appears to have "sagged' in the front. I parked nose to nose with another DC 4x4 LB at my dealers lot yesterday and my bumper was about an inch lower than the new truck ( both are 2005's). Has anyone else experianced this?

I have the "Remote Keyless Entry Upgrade Security System" on my 2005 Double Cab Off Road. It was shown on my window sticker as (SE) Distributor Installed Option QS1 Tacoma Remote Security System $329.

According to the VERY brief manual provided, one of it's features is:

"Automatic Ignition Controlled Lock & Unlock

    1. All vehicles doors will automatically lock 3 seconds after the ignition key is switched to the on position, providing that all doors are closed when the key is turned on. If the key is turned on while a door is open, the doors will not automatically lock.

NOTE: In some models, the doors may not automatically lock until the gear shift selector has been moved to drive, and the vehicle begins to roll.

    2. The doors will unlock automatically when the ignition key is turned to the off position."

My doors don't lock under either circumstances. So I'm assuming that this feature has not been turned on. Trouble is, the VERY brief manual ONLY describes how system is supposed to work but not how to make any program changes.

My 1996 4 runner is equipped with the RS3000 Security System and it's manual clearly describes how to enable/disable the same feature:

    1) Sit in the driver's seat with the driver's door open.

    2) Insert the key into the ignition switch, and turn it to "ON" 5 times within a 10 second period.

Anyone know how to enable this feature on my 2005 Tacoma?? I'm tempted to try the same procedure that my 4 runner uses, but am afraid that I might make matters worse if it's not correct.

Are both trucks TRD? Also check the tires to see if both trucks have the same tire size.

Anyway, as for the ride you can expect it to stiffen. I don't have the Daystar but I do have a spacer lift w/ Add-A-Leaf in the rear and the ride is stiffer but there seems to be less body roll.
  • 054x4dc054x4dc Member Posts: 14
My truck, the lower one is a TRD Sport, the lot one is an SR5, 17 inch wheels on mine, 16 inch wheels on the SR5 with P245 75 R 16 tires. I believe the height on both wheel/tire sizes to be equal. I did not measure front/rear height when I bought the truck, but it looked level, now the front is an inch and a half lower than the rear.
On a side note, I bought 4 16 extra 16 inch steel rims with winter tires P245 75 R 16 for the Winter, saving my 17 inch aluminums from the road salt and harsh Maritime climate. I had to buy Tundra wheels. Apparently the standard Tacoma steel wheels will not fit the TRD due to larger calipers. The dealer test installed them first because they weren't sure if they would fit.

Doesn't everything have to go back a certain way. And will it need to be aligned? I am not mechanically inclined.
  • paratrooper82paratrooper82 Member Posts: 41
Installation was fairly easy, and I really don't know much about engines. The K&N directions are very easy to follow. I doubt anything will get into the filter with the way its closed off from everything else with the heat shield. So long as you don't submerge your truck up to the intake, I doubt you'll have problems. I think dust would create the biggest problem if offroading on sand or dusty areas.

And the K&N tech support guy I spoke with said that it should be tested and "legalized" some time next year.

http://www.trdparts4u.com/ .......My dealer matched their price and installed for $65.00! No shipping!!

Tail pipe comes out the side....sounds great!!! Seems to have a little more "[non-permissible content removed]" too..Maybe like 10 to 15 HP?? Someone find some stats please!!
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Raswank - Yes everything goes back the same way you take it out. Instructions are included with the lift (by the way I would suggest Toytec over the Daystar personally). The Toytec gives you the front spacer, add a leaf to lift the rear, and differential drop for about $220 total. Good price and good customer service! Anyway, the instructions that came with mine are very clear and I had never done it before. Also, yes you will need an alignment afterward.

054x4dc - That's wierd. Although the trucks do come stock with a tail high stance (rear end is taller). Maybe you just didn't notice it before... Would be strange though if it in fact has sagged!

Can cruise control be installed on the base 2005 Tacoma? I heard conflicting stories. One garage says yes, another says it won't work. My local Toyota dealer says no. Any information or suggestions?

Just got stuck for the first time today! My prerunner got overwhelmed by soft dirt, had to dig her out, put planks of wood under the tires and she finally dug her way out, LOL :P . Shoulda spent the extra couple of grand and got a 4x4. Locking rear differential didn't seem to help much. I'm sticking to well trodden dirt paths from now on!
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
The stock tires suck. You probably wouldn't have gotten stuck with Bridgestone Revo's.
  • tacoma4marktacoma4mark Member Posts: 4
hey. the stock exhaust is a one piece unit. its really not that hard to uninstall. my buddy and i replaced it with a Gibson exhaust i found on autoanything.com. I dont know the dyno for it. but ive had it for about 2 weeks now an really like it. its not very load, but it does give a nice little rumble. I also feel the difference when i step on the gas. i also ordered the AFE air intake system also found on that website whcih i should get any day now. Good luck. ohh and they have headers on that site too.

I went to ebay.com and did a search on Tacoma K&N air filter and popped up a lot of other sites to go to. Is there another way to find your vendor?
  • lonwlonw Member Posts: 29
Does anyone know how I can contact the Toyota regional representative for California?

It's not regarding a dealer related issue but a concern I have with their web based Technical Information System and their inability to respond and deliver some online tech info that I've already paid for.
