I have not been looking at this board for the past six months or so, so excuse me if I have missed something.

In any case, a while back I saw some speculation that the 4.7 V8 might be offered in the Tacoma after the new Tundra comes out, with the thought being the 4.7 in the Tacoma would be too much overlap / competition for the Tundra before it was upsized.

Has anyone heard any word about the possibility of a V8 Tacoma?
  • marcusxmarcusx Member Posts: 22
My friend inquired about it with his dealer but they said there was no word at all about a V8 Taco. I'm hoping they do release one though.

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma with 45,000 miles on it. It's a PreRunnner V6 w/ TRD off road, locking rear differential, and all that good stuff.(It's already paid off) I am trying to sell it to a friend for $18,000 off the bat. He says the truck should be about $16,000. It's too high. How much should a '05 Tacoma be worth?

Does anyone know if there are any HID conversion kits for a 2006 Tacoma or any replacement bulbs? My truck is not ready for pickup from the dealer until Wednesday, does anyone know what size the fog lamp and headlight bulbs are? Thank you for all of your help in advance. Aloha from Hawaii.

I've been looking at the 2nd Gen Tacoma(2005+) for 2 years now and am going to take that exciting step January 07. Now I am having a difficult time deciding between the Trd offroad Package, giving me a compass and temp gage, or just a sr5 package with the dealership adding an aftermarket sunroof. I would lose the temp gauge and compass if I want the sunroof. What do you guys think and is there another option im not aware of? Im looking at this being a truck I keep for many years and want it to be something I enjoy continually.

thx marcus for the info on the HID conversion. Has anyone done it yet? Any problems?
  • pekosrobpekosrob Member Posts: 25
Does anyone know how to change out the light bulbs? One of my parking lamp bulbs has already gone out, and I need to replace it, but I can't figure out how to get into the lamp to change out the bulb. Thanks.
  • pekosrobpekosrob Member Posts: 25
If you check out performanceproducts.com, there is a rear view mirror you can get that has a compass and temp gauge on it. This could be nice if you want a sunroof, but I think it's around $230 or something like that. Are you getting the sunroof installed aftermarket? I thought Tacomas never came with sunroofs since they're supposedly for rugged offroading and it's less safe to have a sunroof in case the truck flips (at least that's what I've heard).
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
The owner's manual contains instructions on how to do this.

Also, you did not specify WHICH lamp was burned out. Obviously, the instructions for getting to the bed lights will be different for getting to the marker lights next to the headlights...
  • pekosrobpekosrob Member Posts: 25
i'll check out the owner's manual. thanks. and i did specify which one was burned out, "One of my parking lamp bulbs has already gone out..." I wonder why Toyota made the signal lamps and parking lights different. Don't most cars use the same yellow lights for the front of the vehicle?

I read a great do-it-yourself article with plenty of step-by-step pictures for installing a Sirius system where the Taco radio fits. 50W Pioneer speakers retrofit existing ones as part of the upgrade. No drilling, no cutting. June 2006 issue of Sport Truck

Jared, I would go ahead and purchase the Trd package. IMO, the aftermarket sunroof could compromise the integrity of the truck. Aftermarket sunroofs are prone to leaks, wind noise, and also could possibly diminish your head room in the cab. I would steer clear. Also, I think the TRD package would pull back more money on the resale. I just purchased and '07 Trd 4dr crew cab. Good luck.

one of my brake lights burned out....dealer replaced it under the 3 year 36k mileage warranty. You might want to check on that
  • ustazzafustazzaf Member Posts: 311
The TRD offers alot more thsn just the compass and temp guage, although I use those too. When I got my truck, the tow package, 110 outlet in the bed, front tow hooks, stiffer suspension, graphics, additional air bags, driving lights, rear diff locker, and probably other things that slip my mind right now were also on the TRD but not the plain SR5. Of course different areas will have different packages. I got my truck in Tacoma (WA), but it came from a dealer 125 miles south in Portland. It had different stuff on it than the Tacoma area TRD did. The only option I have not needed/used is the airbags. If you will use the options on the TRD, get it. If not, the SR5 will suit you fine.

If anything I think the sunroof would help the roof structure. There are only 3 cross braces in the whole roof of a double cab. The sunroof goes between them. Other than that it's just thin sheetmetal that doesn't offer much structural support. Having the dealership install a sunroof won't void any part of the warranty.
  • jaredmmc99jaredmmc99 Member Posts: 2
Thanks for all your advice. I know there are many other features with the TRD OffRoad package that I would enjoy. I also know that resale would be better with the TRD. I used to drive a Jeep Wrangler and loved the open feeling when the top was off, I was hoping to capture a small part of that feeling in the Tacoma by adding a sun Roof. The Dealership said they could add one for $1499.00, obviously aftermarket. I decided today that Toyota didn't make the sunroof an option for a reasson so the TRD Offroad would be my best bet. I would Go with the TRD sport but im not a huge fan of the Hood Scoop. I actually am In the Portland area as well. I've read about a new head unit for the stereo in the 07's but checked at a dealership and didn't notice a difference nor did any salesperson know of one. I was also thinking of getting a roll away cover for the bed so that i could cover up small loads or luggage on a camping trip(it rains a bunch in Oregon). Anyone have luck with a roll away cover?
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
True on that point, but I think the safety concern is that a rolling truck will have the glass broken out of a sunroof...but that's probably the least of your concerns while rolling! =)

Most likely, most of the glass in the truck will be breaking.

I probably would have opted for the sunroof, had Toyota offered one from the factory. :)

Check out the roll covers from Dave Tonneau's cover store: http://www.davestonneaucovers.com/truck_cover_usa.html

A lot of people seem to like them.

$1400?!?!?!? Holy crap! At least you get "free" shipping. :surprise:

People better like them for that price.

I really like my Lorado cover. Low profile, rolls up, fits tight and is water proof. Best of all it was only $320 w/ free shipping.

    Got mine from here: http://truckalterations.com/html/access.html

Take a look at the rigid 4 panel Fold-A-Cover for under $700. Weather tight. Solid construction. Versatile. and Locks. The manufacturer's web site is www.Fold-A-Cover.com which has great photos (panels in motion). A do-it-yourself project.

On Saturday November 4, 2006 it was goodbye to my 2005 Tacoma. I sold it to buy a Dodge Ram 1500 Night Runner. They gave me a pretty good price. The truck had over 50K miles on it and it was an '05 they priced for $14,900. I wanted it a little higher so they raised it to $16,900 which was pretty good. So I sold for the Dodge Ram. Today after coming home from work I missed mt Tacoma's rugged ride.I also missed the great gas mileage it use to give me. I needed a bigger truck because I just bought a new business, so I needed to haul more stuff. The Dodeg Ram is nice but it's not as sharp as a Tacoma.(to me)

I have a 2005 Tacoma Prerunner. V6 5 speed automatic transmission. My concern is that sometimes when I am braking when going down a hill the engine will rev very high when it automatically downshifts. Is this common on a Tacoma? Does it somehow assist you on the downhills? Any cause for concern? Thanks for your input.

Actually, the 4x2 5-speed 4-cylinder went from 20/27 to 23/28, and I am rather curious to know what changed to change the rating so much. Just the testing methodology, or an actual change in gearing or engine efficiency or something? Does anyone know?

Thing is, I am thinking 23/28 is pretty decent for a truck, but the dealers have really fab deals on leftover '06s right now, which have the lower rating. If it is just a change in testing methodology, and is the exact same powertrain underneath, I might look into getting a year-end deal on an '06 extended cab SR5. :-)

I don't know how they did it, but I have read that they changed the oil specification to a thinner grade (5W30 or so; not sure), and this gives them 1 more mpg.

I think the big reason to get the 07 is the redesigned seats. The "high-idle after a cold start" issue seems to be tamed somewhat as well. And finally, the 07 4-cyl Access Cab I drove seemed to have less wind noise.

    Good luck.

For 2007 I am wondering if Toyota has gotten better about installing side airbags in the Tacoma? Anybody shopped areond and noticed? It seems like Toyota has been a little stingy with them, and I had hoped this (coming) year they would be near standard equipment.
  • nsxwesnsxwes Member Posts: 84
When I purchased my 2006 DC TRD 4X4 it was almost impossible to find the option available. Even at the very large Toyota dealerships none of them had the airbag option on the many Tacoma trucks on the lot. One dealer told me that they never ordered them because the Tacoma was already "very safe". Others said that Toyota didn't accept the order. Needless to say that was a ridiculous thing to say. I did find one and bought it. Side and curtain airbags are very, very important and should be standard. Making them very hard to find as an option is crazy. Toyota are you listening?
  • mrjjgittesmrjjgittes Member Posts: 156
That was my experience too. These trucks are not cheap. They should have side airbags. Even second and third tier asian manufacterers are putting them in their cars as a matter of course now.

I have the same issue. 2006 Double Cab PreRunner built in Fremont.

I don't get the clunk when traveling fast on the dirt roads, only when I'm going slower. It almost feels like the rack and pinion system is loose or vibrating.
  • azmike1azmike1 Member Posts: 2
    Christy,
What did you find out? I have the same issue with the steering clunk on rough roads.

  • rnkryanrnkryan Member Posts: 5
hey has anyone come up with a solution for the intermittent start problem in 05 tac.
  • jrhillsejrhillse Member Posts: 6
There is a TSB on this starting problem that came back in '05. Had the same problem and requested dealer to service for the No Start Condition TSB. It was rel;ated to the fuel pump and tank. Got a new tank/pump system installed under warranty.
  • jrhillsejrhillse Member Posts: 6
Used 4WD last night driving home from work and still had to look twice for the dark 4WD switch.

I have been working on a lighted switch mod but though about installing the 4Runner's or FJ's switch instead.

Do the 07's have a lit switch?
  • rnkryanrnkryan Member Posts: 5
thanks for the tip on the no start tsb im going to try that with my dealer and see where it goes.

I know its been 6 mos. since this was first posted, but i've got this same issue. Just bought my 06, prerunner, ac, trd sport last month and i've noticed that the left side of the truck, at the front, is about 1/4 " lower than the right.I've searched though the post looking for the outcome of your problem, but cant find a follow-up post. thanks bbarian333

A lot of Tacomas lean lower on the driver-side b/c this side holds a lot of heavier components...fuel tank, battery, etc. Some drivers fix this by using stiffer springs on the drivers side. Src: http://www.customtacos.com/tech/index.php?article=19

I have a stock 2005 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport 4wd. The factory tires are 265-65-17... I am wanting to put 265-70-17 BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA KO tires on and am wondering if the tires are going to be rubbing??? Has anyone done this? I have the 17" stock wheels and want to keep them. If necessary, I could add a lift kit (or 2" spacers) to the truck to accomodate the tires. THANKS in advance for your input! Matt
  • lexuslxlexuslx Member Posts: 18
Do any of you have a 2-3" lift on your 2005-07 Tacoma? I am considering one and was wondering what a good quality brand at a reasonable price would be... The only reason I am wanting a lift is so that I can accomodate the BFG All-Terrain TA KO's that are size 265-70-17...(see previous post).
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Every other Tacoma forum I've been to, has said that the 265/70R17 tires will work without rubbing, without a lift. This is actually considered a +1 sizing, and most tire web sites will show this size if you just put in your vehicle.

I'm planning on going with the Bridgestone Revo's AT's in that size, as they have gotten excellent reviews almost everywhere, even better than the BFG's.

I have a 2005 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport. I put the 17 inch Tires and wheels that came off of a 2007 FJ Cruiser on mine and going down steep hills and turning I get some rubbing.
  • yrffejyrffej Member Posts: 47
sounds like the backspacing is different than your stock 17's, making for a more narrow wheelbase. 265/70/17 is exactly same width as stock, only 1/2" more sidewall....
  • deadcivdeadciv Member Posts: 1
So did you end up finding them? If so, where? My local dealer (Boston) tells me that while Toyota offers the airbags, they refrain from installing them. Which, frankly seems ridiculous.
