Just curious if they tacked freight and Registration Program onto that price? after knocking off the $1704? (Also in Ontario) What colour did you get and was it in stock?

I would look into mpg. A customer of mine has a 4WD Access Cab w/ Auto pulling your numbers and tows about 400lbs. of stuff in the bed. He guesses mpg around 16-17mpg. Judging by all the posts, I would check your baby out.

I have a 05 tacoma d-cab 4x2 sr5 and I have used regular and premium. All I am getting is 15 mpg on both kinds of gas, but it has been all city driving. Have only 600 miles on it. Is some thing wrong or is that about right?

How do you like the Indigo Blue? I have been thinking of ordering one in that color, but can't decide. It has been raining here and if the sky isn't dark, then the vehicles are splattered with dirt from the rain. It is a bad time to study colors.

That white skidplate is raising some ire. There are others who don't like it because it looks "unfinished."

yeah, that tacked on freight/ac tax/doc fee on top of that. i forget the final cost, but with taxes it was over $40k. not a great deal, but hey...i was just excited to get into a tacoma and out of my '93 pathfinder. i got the indigo ink and it was not in stock. they don't ever keep toyota trucks in stock here in windsor cuz no one around here drives imports. i had to go to the detroit dealership to test drive one.

My dealer did agree to order a new glovebox cover for my new Tacoma to replace one with the discoloration problem so many of you have had. I just got a call from the customer service rep saying that there were no glovebox covers available -- they are on back order. I was given no date for the availability of a new cover.

My guess is that they are on backorder simply because people are indeed complaining and they are getting a lot of demand for them. Thus all the available stock is gone and they are on back order status.

I don't care if it takes them a while to get them, but I am going to go in and ask them to replace mine when the can get one.

Actually, that's a pretty interesting question. I'm no mechanic/tire shop guy, but from a physics standpoint, the lug nuts are pretty close to the center of the tire and since the angular momentum is increased by the square of the distance from the center, the centrifugal force in the direction of the heavier nut would probably be minimal, and wouldn't seem to me to be a big issue. But as you know, even a trickle of water over time will eventually create a groove in a rock. Putting the tire on a wheel balancer would answer the question definitively I'm guessing. But I can't remember now if they put the actual lug nuts on while they balance the tire...

I ordered my Tacoma DC over one month ago, and the dealer I'm going through has been very difficult in getting me a date when it will be in. I call, and they refuse to call me back, or are unable to tell me a date.

Should I be concerned after a month of waiting? I'm considering going to another dealer, as I can get the same deal elsewhere. Anyone else had a similar experience, or should I be shopping somewhere else?

    Suggest you e-mail toyotacares.com

They seem to at least be responsive by e-mail.

Power and torque are great. I live in Colorado with hills and mountains and my Taco has never bogged down, even in 6th gear. I definately believe that it is worth 1-2 mpg to get the V6.

Has anyone seen or heard of ladderracks for the new tacomas thankyou for any info
  • vmimanvmiman Member Posts: 80
My first choice was white, but I haven't seen a white one yet!!! The indigo blue is very nice, especially with the upgraded alloy wheels (same ones as on the 4-runner). It has a metallic sheen in the sun and really looks good. I especially like it matched with the charcoal upgraded SR5 interior. The indigo blue cleans up nicely and doesn't show the dirt to badly. As I said yesterday, I took the skidplate off and the truck looks a whole lot better.

    Hi all

I am about to place an order on a Taco 05 Prerunner so that I can get it just the way I like. However, I wanted to confirm that there are two ways that a custom order can be built.

I have heard of preferencing where an already built vehicle is customized to meet my needs.

I have also heard of customizing a vehicle that has been allocated to a dealer before it is actually built. From a quality perspective, I would much prefer this vehicle.

Can anyone confirm that both or either is the way things actually get done?

    Thanks

I really need a truck asap but wanted a Honda thus I waited impatiently for the Ridegeline. Now that it's out it seem to be a watered down version of the concept model.Has anyone here been to the Detroit car show?It seems so dull and bland, even ugly in the pictures that I've seen. The Tacoma didn't impress me in the pictures but it sure was good looking in real life. Can anyone say the same thing for the Ridgeline?

Based on looks alone, is it comparable to the Taco? Please don't lecture me on the long history of the Taco thus it's more reliable, coz I have an 03 first time Honda Pilot SUV and it sure hasn't given me a single headache.I'm gonna pick one of them 80% based on the looks alone, Honda with a slight edge by virtue of standard safety features.

I'm not sure what name they gave my process, but the "allocation" was just as good as picking and choosing what I specifically wanted on the vehicle. I even saw the computer order. The sales manager placed an order for three other vehicles with mine. The other three appeared to be "Spec" vehicles. Mine had my name attached to it with "Priority 1" on it designating it to have priority over the other three.

They were able to tell me when it was scheduled to be assembled. When that date came, the next day I received an email telling me it was built as scheduled. I received an email today telling me it was "on the ground" and delivery could happen any day now. That meant it was in Portland, Oregon, and will be trucked to the dealership after the post production options are installed.

It pays to use a small town dealership, with an off-duty policeman as your salesman.

    88toylc,

How many miles do you have on your truck? I just took a 400 mile trip and got just over 18mpg. That was with the wind and cruise set at 2000rpm! I hope it improves. I have about 1200 miles on my DC SB SR5 4X4.

don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I have been waiting for eight weeks now for my 4X4 double cab. The word I have been getting is that California limits the amount of Tacomas manufactured due to paint emissions. I live in California, so this does not surprise me with the crazy [non-permissible content removed] Democrats running the state into the ground.

Sounds like you're getting your information from some pea-brained neofascist "get the government off my back" yahoo from some other western backwater. California is a little quirky at times, but not just plain idiotic as you imply.

These trucks are made at a plant in nearby Fremont that cost many hundreds of millions of dollars to build and and further tens of millions to modify for the new models. There's no way Toyota would put up with throttling back production to spare the air. Nor would they plan the 2005 production schedule this way.

Car dealers on the other hand are entirely capable of being deceitful scum bags (not that they all are, geogecko!) I'd go talk to another dealer. A little competition can clear some minds at times like this.
  • jdvailcojdvailco Member Posts: 26
Thanks for the info! I assume that you were limited to picking available options and option combinations. While I would love to order the sport package wheel set for my SR5 prerunner version, I am guessing this is against the rules.

    abvelv,

I believe I have the same truck you do (automatic transmission, right?) and I have about the same number of miles on mine -- about 1,100. I've been tracking mpg for every tank of gas. I should mention that I have been using premium and my car was in 2 wheel drive throughout the 200 mile trip on which I got over 20 mpg. I also should mention that I used the 4-wheel drive a fair amount during my current tank of gas due to heavy snow locally and it appears my mpgs aren't going to look good when I fill up today or tomorrow.
  • ecotrklvrecotrklvr Member Posts: 519
Not to worry - See, I worried about this as well. Then I bought a set, and put them on my Honda CR-V. No change in balance. And the 'V has only 15" wheels, so whatever tiny effect is larger than a vehicle with 16's.

You could spend a lot of time thinking and calculating, but sometimes just trying something is the way to go - when it's something like this with not much downside potential.

Depends on how much you strayed from the typical

factory specs. I have had a dbl cab short bed on order now for 2 months for one customer with package #8 and have recieved no word form Toyota as to when and if they will build it. A dealer does not tell Toyota what to build , we just ask and then hope it gets done. If it was not scheduled for production that way for that quarter it will not get built until the next quarter gets planned out.

shouldn't that be all one word? dealerrunaround? i know your frustration. spent a saturday ordering my truck. called for updates and was told that 'order was in'. one month later i stop by the dealer to get real information. and they tell me that 'order was not accepted'. and these guys don't even bother to call! so i'm now dealing with every dealer i can talk to.

yes. dealerrunaround. never trust just one. play them as they play you. they are not your friends. it's all business...some promote a healthy customer relationship...most don't. it's your money. and they want it. all of them do. make them work for it.

    CAPITALISM!

i'm now searching the country for what i want. i can travel anywhere. no one will work as hard for you as yourself. start shopping. you have the choice as the consumer.

and i truly hope you find the truck you want at a fair price. i'm sure you'll love it. i've been waiting over a year for my opportunity to get into a new truck. Toyota is the way to go for me.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Wow. Thanks for all the replies. You know, if the salesperson would just tell me, "I know you want to know when they plan on having your truck ready, but in past experience, it normally takes XXX long before we know anything," or "Other people that have ordered a similar truck, have waited XXX amount of time before getting their truck."

Is that too much to ask? If they would just give me all the information they had, and tell me what their experiences are, then I'd be a little more comfortable just waiting.

I was telling myself that if I hadn't heard back from them by tomorrow, I was going to call my bank, and put a stop payment on the deposit check that I had left with them. Then go to the other dealer that I had talked to before. I'm not sure that is the way to go. I mean, as long as I don't tell the current dealer that I've done this, I can still go with them, if they end up getting the truck (because they usually just give you the deposit check back when you sign). However, if I have this other dealership go ahead and order it for me, and I end up going with the current dealer, I'll have to come up with something there. I have an excuse for the current dealership, since they have neglected to contact me...but I couldn't say the same about the other one.

Not sure what to do. I guess I could contact the other dealership, and fax them a copy of the invoice of the truck I want, and see what kind of deal they can make me. If it's better, I may just go with them anyway, since it doesn't look like they've even started on the current dealer's truck.

As far as ordering a truck that is oddly strange or something, I don't think that's the case. Besides port options, I'm just getting a Black 4x4 DC TRD Sport with Automatic.

Has anyone bought the roof rack this from the Toyota Dealer and installed it themselves? I was curious on how it attaches and is there drilling involved? Any insight on this is appreciated thanks in advance!
  • abvelvabvelv Member Posts: 9
    88toylc,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I do have an automatic. I've been using premium and haven't used 4-wheel drive for more than about 10 miles. So far it's been 15 city and 18 hi-way. If it doesn't improve by the time I get 2000 miles, it's going to the shop.
  • drbill1drbill1 Member Posts: 8
They are available, and they don't look bad if you like side moldings. The only Toyota dealer in Reno, NV. puts them on every truck as their excuse for a $2,000 dealer markup. You may want to contact them and ask them what they use.
  • brandogbrandog Member Posts: 7
I installed the toyota roof rack.No drilling is involved. There are threaded holes already in roof under the black weatherstripping.I posted a msg about a month ago regarding install,if I can figure out how to post pictures Ill post them

i currently have the d-cab,trd sport, prerunner, and have noticed my first porblem. it has been raining hard here in L.A. for the past couple of days. and when the rain stopped i noticed all my carpet was soaked, especially the driver and behind driver.all my windows have been rolled up, i was the only one in my truck the past week.plus i have carpet mats, dealer plastic cover mats, and i had a towel during the rain so i know for a fact that there is a leak somewhere. i took it to the dealer today (1/14/05) and had them check it out. so far they have no clue and i'll have to take it back monday. luckily its covered under warranty and they're willing to remove all the carpet and replace it brand new. but until then my brand new Tacoma smells like a gym locker room and sour cream n onion must on four wheels. if anyone has had the same problem please post any solutions. thanks for your time fellow edmunders.
  • westeemwesteem Member Posts: 49
I have the access cab and windshield was leaking. Toyota fixed it by resealing the front windshield. They did not change the carpets, just took it out and dried it. My problem was on the driver side only. Tundra solutions site has several Tacomas with the same windshield problem.

Thanks for the info brandog! Do you end up cutting sections out of the rubber Seals, to accomodate the bolt on feet of the rack? that would be great if you could post Pics....Thanks again! I ordered the rack...I am sure the instructions are pretty clear.

Yeah, I have had my new Tacoma for five days and love it. The glovebox thing looks more like a defect in the form that they use to put the grain in the surface. Doesn't bother me. Anybody heard on when Warn plans to sell a Transformer Winch Mount kit, or when more rack accessories will be available?

I had the same good luck using the "Auto-Finder" service that my very large credit union provides. They use an Atlanta dealership. They saw the model I wanted (6sp manual, TRD OffRoad, Speedway Blue) They added a couple of options that I wanted (Homelink mirror and Bed Extender) to the factory order, so those options were added at manufacture. All the little bed rail goodies and mats and such, I ordered from an online Toyota dealer. All parts are authentic Toyota, with factory stickers attached. I could have ordered the extender and mirror as well, but I wanted them to come through a dealer, since there are drilling and electrical connections involved. I used to install accessories at a dealer, so I could have handled it, but wanted it right from the factory.

One of the main reasons I started going this route was that I grew tired of fighting with the local dealers about how inconvenienced they were because I wasn't buying something they already had on the lot. I had a dealer in Huntsville, Al. offer to custom order anything I wanted, as well. I guess it all boils down to whether a dealership wants to be helpful, or not.

At the beginning of the "shopping around" process, I was frustrated by the "packages", but eventually narrowed it down to be able to get what I wanted without having to take what I didn't want.

You remove the entire roof ditch molding The roof rack has new roof ditch molding attached to it on the front and rear of the rack once you remove the roof ditch molding the holes for the bolts are under a tape like material thats the same color as the body.Instructions are pretty easy to understand.Make sure you remove the locktite from the bolts that go into the bracket supplied with the rack or you will have a hard time gettng them in.You need a good quality T25 Torx driver.Anyone know how to post pictures?

I have hundreds of paint chips in my black sand pearl Tacoma. Only five weeks old, only 1700 miles, and it needs to be repainted already. The chips are all along the lower part of the rocker panels, from about the midway point of the front door all the way to the rear fender. It's the worst at the lower edge of the rear fender, where the fender flares out. I would expect a few chips by now from rocks and debris being thrown up by the front tires, but this is excessive. It's way beyond the point of touch-up paint repairs. Some of the chips are down to the metal and some are only in the clear coat, but if it continues like this, I won't have any paint left on the fenders by the end of winter. There has to be something wrong with this paint. If you have a new Taco, check it now for paint damage.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 4 banger 5spd access cab "UH" package with alloys and matts.......I love the truck but need the gas mileage of the 4 ....any one have this combo and care to coment....good or bad?....Thanks

sckow - I am shopping Tacos as well. You're looking at the same idea as mine - Access Cab, same engine and trans., but the 2WD version for me here in So Cal. I love this combo - plenty of torque, fun to shift and to drive - and the mileage is good as well. I haven't bought one yet, but leaving the local Toyota dealer the other day, I met a guy who did. He had the 4X4, exact same as what you're asking about. He loves his - even took me for a ride around the parking lot. Looks nice, too - he has the silver. Good luck with whatever you pick. I'd cross shop the Nissan Frontier, but their rear seats in the King Cab are really useless for humans of any size. The Taco could really handle four people - heck, I crawled back there during the test ride, and I could deal with it, and I'm 6'4" and 250lbs!
  • fsmmcsifsmmcsi Member Posts: 792
We spent the day at the LA Auto Show and the Tacoma is nicer than the Ridgeline. The Ridgeline seat does not go back far enough, and its steering wheel does not telescope. The Tacoma interior and seats are much nicer.

I have never owned a pickup, but I don't like any of the sedans with big enough trunks for my equipment, and think that a pickup would be better than another SUV.

I never plan to go off road, except for a gravel driveway every year or two, but am thinking that the off-road package may ride better than the sport package. What do those who already have a Tacoma think?

I am in the market of purchasing a Tacoma within the next few months, hopefully by early to mid spring. From the posts here, it seems as if there are few quality issues with the new Tacoma. What I am trying to find out is, do these problems seem to be on most new Tacoma's sold at this time? Does anyone own a '05 Tacoma without any quality problems at all whether it be the leaky passenger side carpet, front noise suspension, heater noise, "pop-corn" effect or 4WD engage/disengage problems. If these problems are being noticed by consumers, does this mean that the new models being shipped out from the factory will have these issues corrected? I used to own a 2002 4Runner Limited. When I bought the vehicle brand new, I knew the design had been around for some time and that most defects were fixed. Being that it was the last year of that generation 4Runner, I pretty much had confidence that it would have a quality build with little to no defects. It turned out to be exactly the case. The truck was sound, not a single problem to point out. However, with the all new Tacoma, I'm guessing it will take at least a few years to get everything right, would anyone agree? I would like a new truck now, not 3 or 4 years from now, so I guess whatever happens, happens as far as initial quality with the new models. Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

hey thanks for the advice westeem, i'll ask the dealer to give it a shot. hey has anyone added running boards, bed extenders, or a bed cover to their tacoma if so can anyone beat the seemingly overpriced dealers. thanks again fellow edmunders.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I have the bed extender and skid plate. Mine were included in the price of my truck, but I have seen them both on Ebay for cheaper than what dealers are asking. Just do an Ebay search. They also have other accessories including billet grille, roof rack, and nerf bars that are cheaper than the dealers but still not cheap enough IMO. Once more companies start making accessories, they will come down in price. As far as covers, the only good one (hard top) that I've seen available for our trucks in Undercover. I'm waiting for A.R.E. or Leer to come out with something....

Just purchased that combo a few days ago, so keep in mind that these comments may change after more experience.

The power is fine on the 4 cyl. Keep in mind this engine is lots bigger than the "average" 4 cyl.! (Heck, it's bigger than the average SIX cyl. of a few years ago!) I am used to the Nissan Maxima's 6 cylinder VQ engine, so I have a good reference for power. I think if you were towing something on a regular basis, the 4 cyl. could be a problem, but as a daily driver it has more than enough zip. Can't comment on the fuel economy (yet). The engine seems a little harsh to me, and it vibrates a bit at idle, but then again, I'm coming from a Maxima which is very quiet and smooth. Perhaps the rough idle will smooth out after it's broken in. Can anyone else comment?

I like the 5 speed better than the 6 speed. Too much shifting for me on the 6 speed, for no good reason other than to be "cool." Fifth gear is a good "overdrive" and is just fine for cruising at 65-70 mph. There seems to be something strange when shifting from 4th to 5th though. See comments in another post on down about that.
  • chileheadchilehead Member Posts: 41
We drove our Tacoma home from the dealer in a driving rain storm. I checked all carpets, and no problems for us. (Whew!)

The noise from the top vents when using only the heater (floor) setting is explained in an air flow diagram in the owner's manual. It shows (using arrows) air flow through the top vents as well as the floor. The arrows at the top are smaller, indicating a somewhat restricted air flow, hence the noise. I guess Toyota thinks Tacoma owners are too stupid to switch to defrost if the front window fogs up.

No 4x4 disengagement problems so far.

Suspension noise: I have noticed a knocking noise at times. For all I know, it could be something in one of the storage compartments--still need to check that out further.

Glove box: I can see the "defect" folks are referring to. I would not have noticed it if I was not looking for it. It does not bother me either, and I'm usually pretty picky about these kinds of things.

There is something strange happening when shifting from 4th to 5th (5 speed, manual) though. In all the other gears, when engaging the clutch, the RPMs drop down immediately as you would expect. When engaging in 4th though, the RPMs don't drop right away--the engine speed hangs for a few seconds.

This has happened in some other models/brands of cars I've driven, but only in ALL of the gears. (This helps make shifts more smooth.) It's weird to see it happen in only one gear.

Chilehead...Thanks for the reply....I owned a 1986 TACO 4X4 5M 2.4L carburated model that I just sold with about 200K miles...it was a bit of a dog but it never failed me; "great truck".....I'm trading in a 2003 Honda Element 20K miles for the 05 TACO..( unfortunately the Honda is a great car too)....best I could do was 15K$ for the trade and 23150 for a Silver 4x4 "UH" 2.7L 5M access...I drove a TRD v6 5A access with my two kids in the back and they loved it,...as well as I did. I have to wait a couple of weeks for it to come in....it seems to be a hard to find package in the north east.

I have read about grinding and gear noise shifting problems in this forum. I have the V6 manual tranny and for me it is very smooth. I have found though that the engine does rev and you have to wait momentarily for the rpms to come down before letting out the clutch in the next higher gear. If you don't "drive it like you stole it" to borrow a motorcycle cliche, it should be a very nice and smooth transmission. You do however have to conscientiously move the shifter to the right to get 5th and 6th gears correctly. When I first got the truck, I kept going from 5th to 4th instead of 6th. If you want to shift down from 5th or 6th to 4th, just let the shift stick find itself when you come out of the higher gears, then bring it straight down into 4th. Manhandling the shift stick or trying to force the tranny into different gears will eliminate the smoothness most of us are looking for.
  • ecotrklvrecotrklvr Member Posts: 519
The new 4-cyl is a great engine, IMHO. I had a 96 Maxima, and they are quick and smooth. The 2.7L has as much torque as the 3.0L Maxima did back then-183 lb-ft! And at only 3800rpm.

BTW, the noise from the heater blower is still a mystery to me - less flow from the defroster vents equates to MORE noise? How come this isn't true of the floor vents when the dial is set to, say, the dash vents? It seems weird that the noisiest the entire system gets is in the Floor mode - in all of the other 30+ cars I've ever owned, this is the quietest mode.
