I'll buy on the gear ratio- you happen to know what that is? Same on auto and Manual? If the 4L doesnt require 91 octane, why does every press release say that it does? Allthough this wouldnt be a first- LC100's want premium, while the same motor is happy in the tundra with regular. is this another bad EPA joke?
  • rorrrorr Member Posts: 3,630
I think that Toyota states that premium fuel is "recommended" for the 4L. This is easily confused in the press to mean "required". AFAIK, toycash is right; the 4L does not 'require' premium. The same motor runs perfectly happy with regular in the 4runner.

I asked the question because often manuals are rated significantly lower than automatics. Based upon the specs for the new Tacoma, I did not see any variation and I did not see auto being mandatory for the tow package. Just curious to see if anyone has heard or seen anything different.

Has anyone heard if the TRD Offroad package will be available on the 4X4 Double Cab Long Bed? Any new pricing info this model?

    Thanks
  • toycashtoycash Member Posts: 139
That's right, Toyota's wording is that premium is recommended for "improved vehicle performance".

Gear ratios are 3.727 for V6 PreRunner and 4x4s and 4.10 for 4-cyl.

Anyone seen a picture of the 05 regular cab yet?
  • i_luv_toyotai_luv_toyota Member Posts: 350
The new/recent pics of the Taco Double Cab and AccessCab reinforce my original opinions of this truck.

It looks great, especially in that sweet blue color!

I'm very impressed. Great job Toyota!

Does anyone know when this will be in the showrooms??

I recieved an email from a Toyota dealer stating this on price:

"We have a silver V6 pre-runner extended cab coming in. That truck has an MSRP of $23,951. The truck has the SR5 package # 3."

Wonder what else this has on it as its more than the first MSRP for the same truck I found on www.carsontoyota.com

The same dealer mentioned a similar Double cab with TRD-Off road model will probably come in around the 25-26,000 range but she had no official price.

Either that or these trucks are getting more expensive by the minute ;)

In any event, I've been told by more than a few dealers that they will be getting their "show/test drive" units the last week of September and first week of October. Then more units will start hitting lots mid-late October that will be readily available for sale.

Looks like I may be getting myself a Halloween present this year! ;)

ok- Premium fuel: so "reccomended for improved performance" reads 'passes emissions ok but advertised hp and tq figures are on premium fuel' right? Have to check w/ my friends down in Ann Arbor on that one.
Pricing- look over that pdf someone linked a bit ago- there are some odds and ends. and dont forget about delivery charges.
Manual trans towing... Toyota has traditionally NOT derated their gearboxes. possibly because they are actually engineered for their respective applications. Tough part is finding a manual truck- I had to settle for the auto on my Tundra, but I know the thing would pull FAR better with 3rd, 4th and 5th to choose instead of 2nd, D and OD

Thought I would jump into the fuel discussion with the following observation. Toyota posted specs for both the tacoma and the tundra at the North American pressroom.
    http://pressroom.toyota.com/photo_library/display.html?kw=Tacoma
    http://pressroom.toyota.com/photo_library/display.html?kw=MY05+Tu- ndra+specs
Both trucks with the 4.0L V6 have the same hp, torque, and compression ratio. Toyota recommends 87 octane for the tundra and 91 for the tacoma. The other difference is that the tundra is rated LEV for emissions and the tacoma is better with a LEVII rating. Both are 05.

    Clear as mud!

Bad news(?) for those of us who wanted regular cab. It seems that NUMMI will make the access cab, double cab, X-runner, but not the regular cab out of California. http://www.duluth.com/placed/index.php?sect_rank=4&story_id=1- - 82764
It seems that the regular cab on the 2005 won't be available till December? I couldn't wait any longer, so I took advantage of the $750 rebate on a 2004 tacoma- which covered the cost of its air-conditioning. Had to spend extra on a bed liner though.
  • playswithmudplayswithmud Member Posts: 36
OK, boys and girls (ARE there any girls here?)...
Since you threw the tundra in there and mention that they have different emission values.... also take a look at the fact that the manual trans tundra has a deeper 4.08(as on all 04s) gear, while the automatic gets a 3.77 (where do they come up with this stuff???). If you're familliar with the way the EPA measures both emission levels and Milage, this makes sense, but is rather longwinded (unlike my other posts) I think what it comes down to, Toyota knows that fullsize truck buyers will walk away if you write "premim fuel" on the sticker. I beleive that also makes the V6 tundra one of the only Toys not to make LEV2 (ULEV) for 05. so its mostly about emissions, but the Tundra does have lower gears(manual trans- emissions are much better with automatics) and smaller tires.

I've been waiting for the new model to come out. I don't know alot about engines. However, I was disappointed that the double cab, 4x4, V6 engine recommends a fuel with 91 octane. I called a dealer and the sales guy told me you don't have to use 91 octan fuel. That you can use 83 or 87 octane (Or does he just want a sale..). I think this V6 engine has been refined to get the additional hp. What would happen, if anything if you use the regular unleaded fuelwith a 83 or 87 octane?
  • woodstockbrianwoodstockbrian Member Posts: 1
Octane is used in higher compression engines which produce more horsepower. Higher octane gas reduces "ping" or "knock". If you put low octane fuel in a high compression engine you will get "ping" and the engine could be damaged at the least the engine will retard spark and you will loose the horsepower you bought the v6 for in the first place. Play by the rules and just use the 91 and up!!

My dealer has one 05 Tacoma scheduled to arrive on Oct. 15. It is a silver extended cab Prerunner V6. They said more should arrive 2-3 weeks later, but they have no specific information. Hopefully I will be able to wait that long, as my car was just totaled and I need to get something else asap. Hate to settle for the 04, although there are some good deals to be had. I'm sure the first several 05s will command full MSRP. I am going to try to hold out for the 05.....

I wish you the best- I can understand not wanting the 2004, since that Tacoma's basic architecture, engines, etc date all the way back to the 1995 MY introduction of the model (we're talking back in the days when pick-ups werent even required to have passenger side airbags).

The 2005 is a GIGANTIC LEAP forward, and mighty handsome as well.

Finally - a truck that has great interior room, and great gas mileage to go with it! I know everyone wants the v6 or would want a v8 if they could get it. I just want something that will get me 25+mpg commuting to work, and a truck I can throw something in on the weekends. GMs Colorado/Canyon looked nice last year, but the gas mileage was horrible for a NEW small truck. Toyota did it right, getting 27 highway, with a bigger, more hp 4cyl than the previous generation!

My question is the one thing they blew was not offering the 4 cyl PreRunner w Automatic transmission. Anybody know if you can configure the 4x2 Access Cab with an option package to get it to "look like" the PreRunner or 4x4? Just want the bigger tires/ higher stance look. Anybody do this with the previous generation? I'd put an order in right now if they offered the Prerunner Access Cab in 4cyl w automatic. Bummer. Hopefully they offer a big tire/ suspension option for the 4x2.
  • callmedrfillcallmedrfill Member Posts: 729
You know it's almost sad. The Colorado/Canyon maybe the best small pick-up you can buy (for 2004), with larger, quieter interiors than their competition. Their even good-looking!

But with only 5-cylinders, sales are down about 15% for the year, and once the new Taco gets here, that fat lady will really start pressing new CD's!

The S-10 sold 73000 units to this point last year.

The Colorado is currently at only 50000 sold. So it's more like a 30% decline.

And the 275hp INLINE-6 DOESN'T FIT! And a new Taco, Dakota, and Frontier are here. Too bad. It's going to be long decade for GM in small trucks.

How much will a 05 Reg Cab with auto tranny list for (MSRP)?
  • 88toylc88toylc Member Posts: 53
Yesterday (Sunday) evening, during the Tampa Bay/Raiders game on ESPN, a Toyota advertisement ran in which a woman was on the beach complaining about all the attention her boyfriend paid to his truck. The truck is then pushed or driven off a nearby cliff -- which she cheers. It tumbles down the embankment but then rights itself and looks no worse for the experience. Pretty cool ad. My question is, was that a new Tacoma?
  • severesevere Member Posts: 10
I've seen that one a few times. To the best of my knowledge, that's for the 2004 Taco. There is another one where a monster truck hits one and flips.
  • opentacoopentaco Member Posts: 4
Nope. That's an older (albeit funny) commercial. My wife laughs at it, because she "feels her pain" re: the guy's obsession with his Taco. The Monster Truck one is also a riot. I like it when the guy gets out of his taco, confused, and then raises his arms up and gets applause.

Anyway - both commercials star the 2004 model (pre-2005).

When will it be in the showrooms in the NY metro area???
  • cav3cav3 Member Posts: 14
Hey Woodstock! I went to a different dealer here in Atl,GA. He said not to worry about the 91 octane. 87 octane will be fine. He says every toyota on their lot has 87 octane all the way up to the Land Cruiser. Question? The salesman told me Toyota (Dealer) can attach something to the engine that will give it an additional 2-3 miles per gallon. Do you know what he is talking about? Pros & Cons. Asked when 05 Taco would be available and he said Oct. Still no prices. Has anyone heard about pricing. Heads up! Atl,GA paper has 04 Taco's & Tundra's with 0% financing. Didn't offer that 3 weeks ago.
  • hkingshkings Member Posts: 74
Nothing major, but they moved the little blurb and a couple new pictures to their future vehicles section. Even posted a link on the main homepage. Can we expect official pricing soon?

I thought both the xrunner and taco have the same engine specs but according to toyota website, the xrunner has only 240 hp/ 275 lb-ft (http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/future/xrunner/index.html) and taco has 245 hp/282 lb-ft (http://www.toyota.com/vehicles/future/tacoma.html)

I have heard that the new ’05 Tacoma Double Cab actually sits lower to the ground than '04 models. Can anyone verify this? I would prefer a truck that sits higher off the ground.
  • stormriderstormrider Member Posts: 2
The X-Runner info has been there for a while. I'm guessing the 240/275 numbers were preliminary and 245 hp/282 lb-ft are final figures.
  • playswithmudplayswithmud Member Posts: 36
OK- first, stop asking the salesguy questions. The second he tells you something different than what the literature sais, walk away. As for "an extra 2-3mpg" that's simply not possible. Here's why: All manufacturers invest ALOT of money to meet CAFE requirements. If they could simply use some magical device that would save them 10% fuel economy, they could save millions on each vehicle in development costs. If they could, they would. Exception (and that proves the rule) 8600# and over GVW trucks can benefit sometimes, since they are not EPA rated for fuel economy. Now, what IS possible, is to drive in a manner as to get better milage than is indicated as an EPA estimate. I do it all the time- and not slowly

Lower to the ground? well, that depends on your definition. is there less "ground clearance"- yes, because some chassis components are beefier and require more room. is it "lower"- nope quite a bit taller actually. How does the seat height compare? cant tell you that at this point, but I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Get this. I called my dealers about 2 weeks ago asking about the 05 Tacoma. The majority said that they had some coming but they were spoken for. They did say that I could order one with an arrival time of 4-6 weeks. Either way, today I asked again about estimated arrival dates and they are telling me something is up and they don't expect any to hit the floors until end of December or early January.
  • teamgekkoteamgekko Member Posts: 13
That's whats being said in Arkansas.
  • hkingshkings Member Posts: 74
    Interesting report.

However the dealer report in California is MUCH different. I'm in touch with several dealers out here and most have said they will be getting 05's within the next 1-2 weeks.

In fact, in the best estimate I got was from a dealer that said he had the exact 05 Tacoma I was looking for expected to arrive by next Tuesday on 10/4!

At this point only time will tell. I just want to know the prices already! :)
  • greeneggsnhamgreeneggsnham Member Posts: 9
I've talked to several dealers in Louisiana and they have given me the same line. "We don't have any now but expect to see them in 2 weeks - but they will be spoken for." Meaning that they will get 2 or 3 trucks early and they will probably go to some district sales rep or some other manager so they can drive them around for six months.

Sorry if I sound disgusted, but I've had two dealers say that they would take a deposit to hold me a truck, but they wouldn't give a price of the truck or what would be on the truck as far as options. As for price, one dealer said the double cab (4x2) would run around $27-28k.

I guess I expected more info (since the expected release date was Sept.) and less in the way of cost (it is still considered a midsize truck).
  • solaryellowsolaryellow Member Posts: 10
The expected release date of the 2005 Tacoma was never September. Toyota has planned to make the first shipments to dealers on October 18 for many months. You can expect a press release including prices this week (probably tomorrow). Toyota held off publishing the prices until the national dealer meeting in Las Vegas this week. Even the dealers don't know the price until the same day the public will.
  • cav3cav3 Member Posts: 14
Can you recomend a website that would most likely have the prices published?
  • greeneggsnhamgreeneggsnham Member Posts: 9
That was my bad on the release date. I must have misread a previous post - or just thought that most new vehicles were released in Sept. As for the price given to me by the dealership, hopefully toyota will not price the doublecab 4x2 as high as the salesguy said. A price of 28k, plus little additional charges (those $#&*@# dealers), plus T,T &L, I would still have to finance 30k even with something down.

Will that be a nationwide rollout to dealers in Oct. or can we expect to see them trickle down to dealers over the next couple of months?

The original release date for the 05 Tacoma was mid to late September. When Toyota unvieled the X-runner at the Chicago Auto Show back in Feburary Don Esmond a VP at Toyota said they planned to release the X-Runners in late August and the 05 Tacoma in September. I was at the auto show and heard him say this while he was on stage answering questions about the X-runner. I don't know what happened to push the date back but I called Toyota corporate office and asked them. They told me that when you see the vechile posted on Toyota.com it is usually about 2-4 weeks away from the release date. They posted a little bit of information on the website 2 days ago so they should hit dealers by the end of October.

Also, a good place to get the lastest information is:

    pressroom.toyota.com

That site is better than toyota.com/about/news

You can't always believe what comes out of those guys mouths. They are not in the know when it comes down to the nitty gritty. I remember two years ago at Cash Blast, the president of our region told us there was an SR5 Corolla 2 door coming out, maybe he meant an XRS but I'm still waiting for the old SR5 Corolla coupe to get here.

One of my favorite descriptions of an economist sure seems to apply to lots of folks on this message board -- "Often wrong, but never in doubt." Everybody seems to have the inside scoop on what will be released and when as well as when the new Tacomas will be in dealer showrooms, but I am finally realizing nothing can be relied upon until the fat ladies at Toyota sing.
  • tacofan4lifetacofan4life Member Posts: 33
Don Esmond is the Toyota North American Sales Division senior vice president and general manager. He is a little higher up than a regional manager. I think he knows what he is talking about when he goes to a unveiling to answer questions. This happened back in the begining of Feburary and they already had the truck built. A lot of things can happen between Feburary and September when they start testing a newly designed truck. I'm sure they found problems that delayed the release. Even Toyota isn't perfect!
  • tacofan4lifetacofan4life Member Posts: 33
Im just going by information I received by a Toyota VP and what I was told when I called Toyota Corporate Office. They told me that once a vehicle appears on http://www.toyota.com it is usually 2-4 weeks before they start showing up in the show rooms. If this is true they will be out by the end of October. If you would like to call and see what they tell you, the number for corporate is 1-800-GO-TOYOTA...If any of you do call please let us know what they say. I am interested to see if they give everybody the same story.
  • playswithmudplayswithmud Member Posts: 36
They dont pay me enough for self doubt. However vagueness is strongly encouraged. You'll almost never hear a true economist using unqualified numbers in a forecast. That said.....

2 questions: does anyone know more about the "...ingenious deck rail system."? and is there a way to get a D.C. w/o the hideous silver accents on the center stack? of all the things Toyota normally does just a little better than nissan, this is one are a where Nissan chose a little more wisely- by leaving me the option to swap in a single din radio and and a 2way radio or my own nav screen....- I suppose the nasty silver could be painted over though. Or replaced with a coplete custom panel....I love my brown&black dash in my Tundra- very calm- nothing too exciting.
  • 88toylc88toylc Member Posts: 53
Your "They don't pay me enough for self doubt" line is about the best comeback to the "often wrong but never in doubt" observation I have ever heard. And I didn't want to discourage folks from passing along what they hear about release dates -- it's just a bit frustrating when it does seem clear Toyota could be forthcoming with the facts at this point in time.
  • tacofan4lifetacofan4life Member Posts: 33
I would agree with that 100%. Why is Toyota playing games with all us loyal Tacoma fans. I just saw an ad tonight on TV for Toyota's new "Moving Forward" ad campain that they have on the home page of www.toyota.com and they showed a quick shot of the new Tacoma but they still won't let us know when it is coming out or give us pricing! I guess I am getting impatient. They have already let the media drive test drive them. Lets get these things to the dealer. Keep passing the info along. It is all helpful in our quest to find out when we will actually get to see these at the dealers!
