First of all, it would be a VERY expensive transformation... Especially if you are not a gearhead (I am an amatuer gearhead)... I have an old F-150 that I have semi-seriously thought about transforming, but again, this is one of my hobbies. Second, if you did this, you need to pay close attention to gear ratios, especially in the differentials. If the front ratio is different from the rear, then you have a problem! Third, it probably wouldn't work as well as a stock 4x4 system. Most of the new 4x4s have some kind of traction control or other electronic control. You might be able to get some aftermarket parts that can do similar to the stock parts, but I don't know anything about that.

As for whether you need 4 wheel drive or not, here are my two cents: I have had a RWD Chevy S-10 for many years now. I have taken it down rough roads, towed, and carried loads in the bed, and haven't truly needed 4 wheel drive. There were times when it would have been nice to have 4 wheel drive, but it was rarely truly necessary. For a light truck, sometimes 4 wheel drive would have been nice for towing (to get better traction since the S-10 ways so little--may not be as much of an issue with the heavier Tacoma).

I also lived in Michigan for many years and never needed 4 wheel drive in the winter. In my opinion, if roads are bad enough that you need 4 wheel drive to even get moving, then you have no business being out!

So, 4 wheel drive is something that is nice to have but rarely necessary unless you do some serious off roading. (I have friends who claim they can can get farther off road with a RWD truck than most people can with a 4x4...) If you can afford it, it is nice to have. Another option that is probably nearly as good as 4 wheel drive is getting a locking rear differential. I haven't looked at the options on the pre-runner, but I know the Nissan Frontier has a locking rear differential on their 4x2 model. Toyota may do something similar. Finally, if you can't afford a 4x4 right now, you might be able to easily trade up for a 4x4 in a few years (after you leave college and have money) if the pre-runner maintains its value.

This is probably more than you wanted to know, but it is my 2 cents.

I special ordered a Prerunner with VSC and a limited slip differential. This will help to prevent getting stuck in the snow, but it will not make it an orr road vehicle.

I have had simmilar experiences with my 2005 dc 4X4. At 80mph with the cruise on I slow down to about 73. then I'll reapply the cruise, Which the truck gets back up to 80mph with ease and at low rpm. But when the truck reaches 80mph, the truck has a mind of its own which it down shifts then about redlines the tac. Normaly it takes about 3500rpm to achieve 80,but then all hell breaks loose. anybody have a fix or why the truck does this?

a question for everyone with the curtain-side airbag option...which seat covers are you using, if any? the covers toyota offers conflict with the curtain-side airbags because they prevent proper deployment in an accident. I hope toyota plans to make a seat cover that does not conflict with this option....also, has anyone seen a cover for the rear bench seat of a double cab? if so, where did you see/buy it? thanks
  • maxvenummaxvenum Member Posts: 39
yep, it depends on weight and such. How heavy of a trailer is this travel trailer? Do you have the 4 cylinder or the V6? If you have the V6 and are only towing a couple thousand pounds, I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much since the V6 is rated up to 6500 lbs. If the trailer is heavier or if you want to feel safer, I am pretty sure they make aftermarket transmission coolers, though they may not have any out yet for the 2005 Tacoma. I have done some towing with my 97 Chevy S-10 (up to 3000 lbs or so) without any problems, though, I have a manual transmission; I haven't seen many vehicles with a transmission cooler on a manual transmission.

i saw on your link that you have an interface to link your ipod to your radio. is this the only way to sync the two together or is there another way. if so, how do i go about getting an interface for my ipod.

    this truck is sweet!

    I have anothr question.

I am getting the base model access cab. v6 4x4 at.

What shocks do they use on these?

Both the sport and trd packages offer bilstiens.

My question kinda ties in my tires question because i am wondering if 265-75-16's will fit if the truck sits a little lower.

I have no reason to believe the truck will sit lower, but its a question nonetheless. thanks

I have the same thing (same truck model). With everything off, open the driverside door, put it on neutral and rock the shift from side to side. You will clearly hear that same noise.
  • gr8blue1gr8blue1 Member Posts: 33
Cruise control on most vehicles isn't recommended when driving steep uphill climbs. This new V6 is a lot more powerful though so it all depends on load, ascent grade, etc. I normally switch it off when going uphill but if I don't it slides a mile or two slower but have not noticed any strange downshifting while zooming up the mountains in MD going thru western PA.

I just returned from an extended road trip and 3000 more miles since my last post. My highway MPG has improved to at least 17 on high speed driving (75-85mph). I was only getting about 14MPG prior to hitting this point (over 7K miles now).

The difference was probably a forced oil change I did (put synthetic 5W-30) when I unexpectedly got the MAINT REQD warning when I hit the 5000 mile mark. If this is programmed at every 5k, then it won't matter if an oil change was recently done which i did at 2200 miles (after break-in)and not quite 3 months earlier. I disabled the warning light myself as it didn't automatically go off after the required maintenance (oil change) was done.

I will post pictures later and show you folks how the DZ tube steps worked vs road salt and ice.

    I LOVE THIS TRUCK!

    [iPod interface]

I would have to say that I wouldn't recommend the iPod interface used in the pictures. I have that interface, and while it works okay, it could be better. More than half the time, it won't start playing by itself, which means you have to switch between FM and DISC a couple of times to get it going. It is also at a different volume that the radio (it's slightly quieter), which means the radio blasts when you switch to it without turning the volume down.

I e-mailed them over 3 weeks ago about these issues, and have yet to get a response from them. Therefore, I can't justify someone else spending $200 on the product, if they aren't going to support it.

There are others out there, and some just coming out, from what I hear, and these are much better, giving you text information on the radio itself.

    [cruise control]

Well, the rolling plains of Oklahoma are no "mountains," that's for sure. I'd consider most of the hills between Texas and Oklahoma (except the pass over the Arbuckle Mountains), very minor. Every other car I've had, has had no problem navigating these hills, especially without dropping two gears.

okay I've decided I really want the 2005 tacoma access cab 4x4 rather than the prerunner. I have about $3000 or so to put down. Can somebody give me an idea of how much yall are paying a month including insurance and all? I realize that everybody's insuranec and all is different I'm just hoping to get some ideas I haven't been able to get to the dealership yet because I no longer have a car.lol I'm just desperate.lol Thanks alot.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
I have a double cab 4x4 TRD Sport, so I can't really compare monthy payments, plus, I put more down than $3k.

I just thought I'd give some advice, since you're asking about monthly payments. Don't let the dealership talk to you in terms of monthly payments. BYO calculator, and talk to them in terms of the final price of the truck. You can then calculate your own monthly payments (check out some web sites on how to calculate monthly's when you know final price, down payment, and interest rates (don't forget sales tax)). Dealers will ALWAYS try and rip you off, if they know you are willing to deal based on the monthly payment.

Lastly, if they won't deal with you, get up and leave. It's hard to do when you really want the truck, but it shows that you are not going to get taken, and if they really want your business (and they do, better sell a car with some profit, than not sell one at all), they will either call you the day after, or hurry after you to have you come back. These trucks are not that hot anymore, now that they have more in stock. Don't let them sell that trick on you either.

Anyway, my insurance is around $600 (I think) every 6 months, and I'm 29, and have a decent driving record (no wrecks in the last 3 years).
  • disturbed1disturbed1 Member Posts: 3
Thanks for the advice it was really helpful. I'm 25 years old and just recently got in a wreck(skid off the road right onto a telephone pole) but the car I was in was in my Dad's name I don't know if that makes a difference. But anyway I may sound like a kid saying that he is going with me to the dealership but my dad has been around and even used to sell used cars years ago so he knows every trick. I'm getting my pops to go with me I'm sure he'll be very helpful.lol Heck he raised his voice to one salesman when they were buying a new Honda accord and he ended up saving tons from the sticker price. If the 2005's are too much I may look at a 2004 or something to save a little more because my mind is stuck on the 4x4 so we'll see what happens.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
I'm sorry, I don't know what shocks the 4x4 uses, someone who has one would know. I do think the base sits at the same height, but don't quote me.

A while back on here, in December I believe, I posted about how cheap the tailgates are on these trucks. I bent mine from having my snowmobile in the back, something that wasn't a problem with old faithful (95 T-100). Last night I took the tailgate apart, removed the composite and bent the tailgate back in place. I then installed a 3/4" thick piece of plywood 12" x 52" to the tailgate permanently. I added thick rubber matting to the piece of plywood so the plywood would last longer from the carbides on my sled crossing it. I am spray painting the plywood black so it will hardly be noticable. Not the greatest fix but something that had to be done to these brutally cheap tailgates.

hello, i put down $1000 with $2000 equity in my trade in with a total down of $3000 and i got a dc prerunner v6 payment is $465 but my credit is crappy so i got 9.8 apr, and ythe insurance varies from place to place, me with clean driving record paying$960 for 6 months, i live in vegas so i pay high insurance rahter than somebody that lives a a rural area.

well good luck on finding the truck you want, i have been hearing that the 05 tacos are hard to find right now.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
Sounds like your snowmobile is a super tight fit back there; good thing the TACO bed is longer than some others. I do wonder if that bed extender would really be useful afterall.

I have a 2005 Tacoma TRD,4 ltr V6, VIN #5TEUU42N45Z00352. The mileage sucks,(supposed to be 19 mpg city, 26 mpg hgwy) I am getting between 14 and 16 average, even on Toyota's annilizer,we have been working with the mpg since Dec, (Belleville Toyota says they are waiting for info from TOYOTA CANADA), I am not sure anymore. The truck has an adapter for trailer brake controller, and a plug for them on the left side of the steering wheel, but for some reason it cannot be connected to the rear, ($590.00 trailer hitch that you can't use).
Now I have a bad vibration at 120 kms/hr, and they checked and found it NOT to be the tires, so they balanced them anyway, now I have a shimmy in the front.
I feel the public has the rite to no, I have more concerns regarding Money lost during a deal from a lease from a 2004 Tundra to this Tacoma, that I have purchased.
If my probs are corrected, I will delete this message, or update it. If anyone wants the full story on my cash loss, or the deal, or this 2005 Tacoma, Please contact me at

It really would depend on many things, but I agree deal in terms of final amount not in terms of payment. You would be surprised how the dealer will take you for a ride but still get you in your desired payment range.

If price is an issue, I would look for a left over 04. That's exactly what I would do if I were in your shoes. You can get a hell of a deal on one right now (could most likely get a double cab for the price of an 05 access cab). Dealers are really trying to get rid of their 04s and are practically giving them away. Not to mention the 04s are great looking trucks!

Anyway, as for insurance I am 31 and live in MD and pay $350 every 6 months. But I also have things like homeowners and accident free discounts.

The drain plug I believe is 14mm and is just in front of the transmission. If you need a pic let me know and I can go out and snap one real quick and email it to you.

The filter just twists off, but if this is your first change then it is probably on pretty tight. I had to use the ole punch threw with a screwdriver method to get it off.

Bed extender would not have mattered, the sled goes past the gate when it is down about 10". When the sled is in the back I have to put a block of wood under it to spread the weight out. You are right though, at least the bed is 6', I don't believe any of the competitions models are 6' and if they are then the box isn't as wide.

I'm about to buy a DC TRD Sport #2. I was wondering if anybody has a fairly new Taco, and if Toyota has fixed most of the problems by now? (leaking window, cold weather bed noise, etc). If I buy one now, I would guess that it will have been manufactured in late Feb. or early March.
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
hi there, i just bought mine in feb have 1550 miles and no problems leaks, noises, just lovin the truck, was built in 01/05 in fremohnt ca, hope you don't have to wait long for your truck, you will probably love yours too.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Sounds like you would be better suited with a trailer. your snowmobile SOUNDS too big for the truck based on your description.
  • streaksstreaks Member Posts: 64
Traded in the '04(9500 mi.) for the 2005..both trucks the same pkg.(TRD off-road Acc V-6 manual) got the OG # 2 on the '05(price diff about $4500 more) Dealer paid my truck off(some would not)Got about $1800 off the sticker($27,893)With trade..etc.financed ($28,374)inc. all taxes.4.76% w/ nothing down, my payment is $521 per month. Maybe not the best deal out there but not the worst. Ordered in Dec..picked up Feb. 2. have only seen 1 '05 in my area(Cent. Pa.)Deals will get better when some rebates/ incentives kick in & more become available. Hold your ground. Don't be afraid to walk away!!
  • streaksstreaks Member Posts: 64
Same here...1500 miles..Love it!! Slight engine tick.(read on here that isn't a concern??) Wish bedliner wasn't so slick, but that could be handled (bed mat or maybe brush on Rhino-like for the floor)
Engine is great..broke 'er in good.Interior changes light yrs. above the '04.No leaks..Don't really notice any rattles either..Hey, It's a truck anyway!
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
I did purchase a trailer that I share with my father but on occasion I have had to put the sled in the back of the truck. I was told by Toyota that the tailgate would only support a weight of 200pds. Thats why I am warning everyone on how cheap these tailgates are.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
    That's good to hear. Thanks!
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
hey there, well on my truck I get on the tailgate when i am loading something or need to get up there to wash off the roof, and i am 225lbs but i hhave had no problems with the tailgate, i wounder if it matters where it was made because that does not sound right, why would one truck tailgate hold more than 200lbs and the other would not, anyway hope your truck is not that bad.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
200lbs is ridiculous! Come on Yota. Most people weight more than that! :)

Does anyone have any pics of the LB Taco with the factory lid installed on it? Im havent seen one yet and im debating on whether i should go with an aftermarket brand.

I'm about to buy an Access Cab V6 with TRD#2 and Tow package. I saw an earlier post about one person not having any problems with tie down hooks, and then another person implying that a motorcycle had flown out of the back of their truck.
I have asked dealers and have not received a satisfactory answer as to the strength of the composite bed floor and tie downs. I am looking to load my motorcycle in the bed and want to make sure I have a place to connect the ratchet straps, and that I can compress the front fork without ripping up the tie down hooks. Also are there aftermarket tie down hooks for this purpose.

    Please advise,

    Justin

I would bet that all tailgates are made cheaply like mine, what you have to do is and you will laugh when I say this but stand smack in the middle of the tailgate and hold that position for awhile (strike a pose), even jump up and down if you dare and watch what happens. Driving around with a sled in the back of the truck bouncing up and down on our great roads here in Canada with the weight of the sled on the middle of the tailgate will bend it in no time.

I have had my white 05 Tacoma DC 4x4 auto TRD for a week now and have a few observations. Mine is a Mexico Toy with a 2/05 production date. I am happy with the overall package but have a few picks. It does has the engine tick that others have discussed. I will have the dealer check at the first service but it sounds like a loose valve especially since it tends to go away after the engine gets fully warm. More engine noise in the cab than would have expected in a new Toyota. Lot of wind noise at freeway speeds, more than my 04 had which is a disappointment. Lot of fan noise out of the ventilation system in general...may be an issue of the duct work design. Mine has the marking on the glove box as well, not a concern though because you have to look hard to see it. Noticed the exhaust crossover hangs down lower than the tranny crossmember which makes no sense at all. On the good side I love the power, room and style. No rattles, squeaks, leaks noticed. Miss the lock/unlock audible from the remote that my 04 had. First mileage check I got 18 mpg pulling a small trailer with a sportbike, maybe 700 lbs total. Trip was maybe 70/30 hwy/city so mileage looks promising. Power was great. Almost never dropped out of 5th to maintain speed. Would still prefer 4.10 final drive ratio to the 3.73 that comes std because I believe it would make a better match to the 5sp auto o/d and would be better for towing.

Hello, just signed up so this is my first message. I have a 2005 Tacoma Double Cab short bed, 4x4 v-6 with the TRD # 2 package in Silver. Purchased on 12/09/04. It's replacing a 2002 Toyota quad cab with 30,000 miles on it. I love both of these trucks. I have not experienced any problems as listed in the forums. I have 2,800 miles on the truck now and love it, except! If you look under the truck and view the left hand side catyltic converter, the exhaust cross over pipe running back to the muffler extends below the transfer case and is approx 1 1/2" lower than the cross member. What this all means is that the crossover exhaust pipe is the lowest unprotected item under neath the chassis. I have had 4 wheel drives for almost 35 years, and the one thing I know is that if you cross over a rock or hit a dog or cat on the open road, that exhaust pipe is the one thing that is going to take a critical hit.
Any body else noticed this? Is it only on the Quad Door Short Bed? I've seen Borla advertising a cat back system for the 2005, have they re-routed this pipe, or is it the same OEM routing? Anyway, was really surprised when I crawled under my truck and saw how vulnerable that cross over pipe is. Stupid engeering to say the least.
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
The published MPG for the double cab ranges from 16/20 to 18/22, depending on transmission. I don't know where 19/26 comes from.

How is money lost on a lease a problem for everyone else? It sounds more like uninformed shopping and poor negotiating. You found Edmunds, which is chock full of information to help you with the financials, yet signed the deal anyway?
  • maxvenummaxvenum Member Posts: 39
Well, though I don't want to spread gossip, this is what I have heard/read/seen:

If you look on the cleats in the track system near the top of the bed, they say 200 lbs, though I also heard that each track can only accomodate a max of 300 lbs, no matter how many cleats you have in the track (this was from a document from the Nissan dealership comparing the Tacoma and Frontier, so take it as you will...) The D-rings on the bed floor are 400 lbs (can't remember if I read this, was told this, or what).
  • jaytacojaytaco Member Posts: 2
Technically, I think the dog or cat take the critical hit.
  • johndeerejoejohndeerejoe Member Posts: 19
I was wondering how many miles everyone has racked up so far. I've got 8300 so far since October. No real problems.
  • singlehuntersinglehunter Member Posts: 3
Well, you know your right. Although if the exhaust pipe wasn't sticking down so far they might have a better chance.
Point is for a 4x4, and lets choose a rock or stump this time, there is no skid plate, and it curves just below the cross memeber brace, so be carrying a hacksaw so you can cut it out and make it to the muffler shop. Thanks for the reply.
  • gearhead1gearhead1 Member Posts: 408
That's something to keep in mind with these short beds as many times the gate will be down with weight on it. One reason I chose Ridgeline (gate weight rating = 300lbs)

"Technically, I think the dog or cat take the critical hit." OK, that was funny.
  • johndeerejoejohndeerejoe Member Posts: 19
Congratulations on your van purchase. The 2005 tacoma is awesome. Does your Ridgeline have 4WD low?

I just returned from a 350 mile trip from Colorado Springs to Monarch Ski Area CO and back. Kept it under 65 mpg. Got 22.3 mpg -- not bad. I have the V6 with manual tranny with 6500 miles on the truck. You should have seen all the front wheel drive vehicles having problems in the ice and snow. The Taco with the LSD did wonderfully.

Was 22.3mpg with a 4WD or 2WD truck. If it was a 4WD, did you have it engaged. I am aslo from Colorado Springs and am looking very hard at the Tacoma. Thanks, Bill

Sorry about the typo, they are 75 series. One issue I am having with these tires is on the Southern California freeways which have the grooves probably like many other states. The tread actually tries to follow the grooves which makes for interesting control issues with steering. Also in rain the other day driving below speed limit, they hydroplaned slightly which caught me off guard since I was going pretty slow because of the weather. Maybe I got a bad set, but I do plan on replacing them when I can afford to do so. Besides the tires, this truck is awesome and I have had no problems at all. I had a 2001 PreRunner before this one, and this blows the 2001 away in all areas.
