    >>I would assume that it is relatively dry from >>water leakage of any type? Do they drill into the >>composite bed rail to secure the lid?

Yes, it has a double-rubber seal that runs completely around the top.

All the support is in the railing accept for one bolt on each plate where the locks slide into. (I haven't checked to see how far they went into the composite/bed but I assume it's all the way through.)

For all that were interested. I now have the pic of where I went through the firewall. Sorry it took so long. I will get it hosted up on my website this morning so that I can post it here.

I just purchased a 2005 Tacoma 4X4 two days ago. The day I purchased it the temperature was 70 degrees. I had test drove the Tacoma on two 70 degree days and I turned the heater on but didn't leave it on long enough to see if it was heating up. This morning I went to turn the heater on and it blows nothing but cold air after 30 minutes of operation. I went straight to dealer and dropped it off. They told me it must be a cable that came off the dial. I told them the 2005 Tacoma heater is all electronic and does not use cables off the dial assembly like previous models. They looked at me like I did not know what I was talking about. I just don't want them ripping my dash apart because nothing will ever be the same after that. My truck has been there 4 hours now and I have not heard back from them. I hope it is nothing serious. My only suggestion to people looking at this truck is to make sure EVERYTHING works before you drive it off the lot.

Got 4200 mi in 3 months on my TRD #2 Sport Dcab 4x4 6spd. Love it. Tried the auto too, works good. I like manuals personally. NO transmission problems or any problems for that matter. Handles great, not much difference between off road and sport ride. I agree hood scoop is silly, but want Ltd slip instead of locker in rear. love it

    Hi aa00

In Canada we have been getting the brushed 17" wheels on the TRD Double-Cabs, and like you, I'll never figure out why they would ship a TRD offroad trucks without All-Terrain tires? While all the x-tra cab TRD's seem to have them.

Mine came with black wall Bridgesone Dueller H/T . Which were no better than granpa's slippers this winter...

You can't beat {bling-bling} shiny rims. The set of 20" I have my eye on "look slicker than snot on a roosters lip"!

Wishing you all the very best with your new truck, you won't be disappointed.

Anyone here in the states get the brushed rims on the d/c offroad packs? I thought they all came with the shiny alloys with lettered tires? Thanks....
  • joni3joni3 Member Posts: 5
any news on the keyless entry??........ Mine doesn't beep either :(
  • mwm10mwm10 Member Posts: 8
I know this thread is long, but there are plenty (tundrasolutions...toyotanation...etc). Search for this (and anything else virtually) and you'll find it.

The manual has a misprint apparently, no beep expected, unless you paid for the extra security system. I think that's crap, but that's the story.

thanks for the info.......really didn't want to go back to dealer.

Like you the day I test drove and purchased truck didnt need heat on. 3 hours later it cooled down and when I turned the heat on it blew cold air. That was 12/10/04. Part just came in yesterday. Dealer is fixing it now. Had a rental since 1/20/05. I agree wiyh your suggestion to make sure everything works. I dont know how cold it gets where you live but it gets real cold here. Been below 0 cant run around with no heat.I wish you luck that it dont take as long to fix yours as it has to fix mine. Keep posting.

I bought a 05 access cab TRD Sport in november of 04. Does anyone hear a kind of a rattling noise in the exhaust when driving, it doesn't do it when idling. Just wondering if anyone else hearing the same thing?
  • rye7rye7 Member Posts: 1
Palomino, I'm in same boat. Live on East Coast and can't find a longbed prerunner with side curtain airbags anywhere. Mind sharing what dealership you used in northwest? Did you have it shipped or did you go and get it? Thx.
  • bbqbbq Member Posts: 2
    thanks for the reply.

what does a limited slip give you versus the locker. I thought the fact that a locker won't slip makes it a better choice?

any paint issues, heard a few issues on that too.

Like the Tacoma over Frontier, but Tacoma seems to have more issues on the net.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Here is where I went through the firewall. I have since cleaned it up some but this will at least let you know where to start. This is the passenger side, but I believe there is one on the driver's side too.

Just wondering if any body else was having any problems.
    1. Skid plate rubs the bumper at speeds over 75mph. I bent it down a bit. Fixed the problem except with a strong head wind
    2. drivers side leaf spring squeaks like crazy with less than 8,00 miles on it.
    3. Whats everyone opinion on using 10W30 instead of 5W30. the dealership put 10W30 in it. Everyone I've talked to says its fine but?
but other that this the truck is great!
P.S> where do you find where the truck was made at?
  • cabkingcabking Member Posts: 1
Purchased a Silver DC SR5 in February. Now have about 1,800 miles with no leaks, squeaks or paint issues. Assembled in Mexico 01/05 so maybe the new plant has solved some of the previous issues. The only after market "accessory" I have added is an emergency tool kit. Purchased a 101 piece Durabilt mechanic tool kit (@$20) at Target and the molded case fits perfectly behind the back seat on the passenger side next to the fixed tray.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Well, my dealership said the same thing about putting 10W30, but personally, the manual says 5W30. I think the place that made it knows better. I just found a Sam's Club that had cases of 5W30 Mobil 1, so I picked up 3 cases...

If the dealer put 10W in mine, I'd have them replace it.

It might be okay, but something as minor as that, might not show up until 100K miles or more...
  • hudnall70hudnall70 Member Posts: 1
The 5W30 is a energy conserving oil and has a better splash factor than 10W30. Splash factor is supposed to provide better lubrication.
  • larry10larry10 Member Posts: 88
I had my oil changed today at dealer, they used 5W30. I took it in for that recall (parking brake), so i figured I'd get an oil change (3,200 miles)

I just saw this post. I have a DC LB PreRunner with the Side Curtains installed. I had to order it at the factory. It is being built in Fremont and I am supposed to take delivery on March 23. I live in Northern CA.

That's very interesting. I believe your the first person that's posted with a Mexican Taco. Would like to hear more from Mexican Taco owners. Good to hear it's trouble free....actually, I've got a freezer full of Mexican Tacos. No leaks or squeaks to report.

Just curious if this is Synthetic engine oil, that your using in your trucks?

If so, have you noticed any gains in MPG?
@{The reason I ask is that the gas prices in Eastern Canada is on the way up again. We are currently paying a little over $1.00 per liter for supreme, and they are talking about $1.10 by summer. Note your US gallon has about 3.785 liters i.e. we would be paying $3.78 canadian$ @ US gallon...

    [Mexican Taco]
Just to clarify, in case someone hasn't been following the discussion, he isn't talking about a Tacoma owned by a Mexican, but rather, a Tacoma that is made in the new Mexico Toyota plant.

    [Oil]
Yep, full synthetic. I haven't changed the oil in my truck yet, so I wouldn't know about MPG increases. My guess is that it probably wouldn't be noticeable though.

I used 10W30 Mobil 1 in my Honda Prelude since it had about 100K miles on it. When I traded it in on the new Tacoma, it had 195K miles on it (with the oil changed at every 5-6K miles). The engine still ran perfect, with no leaks at all. The only thing that I did notice, was that under heavy acceleration, it did burn a little oil, but not so much as to be a concern. I'm not sure an engine that old and with that many miles could be free from burning at least some oil. I've seen cars less than 3 years old pouring out smoke from the tail pipe though!

I plan on keeping with the 5K mile oil change plan with this truck (already started it with my wife's Acura TSX). Once I find a place that carries the PureOne oil filters, I plan on picking some of those up.

Well we've seen the limited slip vs Locker debate before, both have advantages and disadvantages. I personally wanted the ltd slip. Why? I drive in snowstorms alot as a snowboarder and snowmobiler. My road is a nice steep climb as is my driveway. I want 2 wheels spinning in back harnessing 245 hp when its needed For light/medium duty off roading the ltd slip is fine, and often dont even need 4wd.
Now with the locker you have an open diff (one wheel power) unitl you push the locker button, use, then you shut off. Per the manual, only use up to 5 mph. My buddy goes faster than that locked but its use is generally for serious off roading or want to bust up a road with 3 ft of snow. There is no question it will provide ultimate traction when used, but you have to choose when you want it locked.

Hope that helps, and heck you may not care about the rear axle in back if you dont really off road or live in deep snow country. Honestly both TRD Sport and Off road are great trucks at similar prices. good luck

Has anyone installed an K&N airfilter yet. If so any problems?
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
I'm sure it works fine. There isn't much to an air filter. Although, based on an article posted some 1000 posts back, the K&N doesn't provide as much protection from particles entering the engine as a standard air filter.

    http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Filters.html

You have to decide between performance or protection. Basically, you get a little more performance from the K&N because you aren't restricting airflow like the paper filter does, but you are also introducing more contaminants into your engine by using one.

You can search on K&N's web site. They don't list one for the 4 banger.

I have the same texture on the bottom of my doors. still wondering why its like that. It dosent seem to effect hte paint any. I currently have 8,000 miles on it with no paint flake or chips in this area. Let me know if you find why the paints like this. thanks

Read the manual that comes with your alarm system, it will tell you how to reprogram the audibles. I did the opposite. I got tired of hearing the stupid horn blare everytime I hit that remote button. Now she's quiet as a mouse!

    Volley,
I took a peek at the firewall in my taco and found the hole you show on your pic. I didn't realize that it was a grommet because it was solid with a pull thingy in the middle. Looked at the driver side and found the other one also but it is tough to access as it is behind the master cylinder assembly. One other question, how difficult was it for you to access the firewall hole on the passenger side from under the dash? Are the heater ducts in the way? I didn't look cuz I am lazy today.

BTW, nice set of wheels you have there and good start to your homepage too!

    Thanks,
    Banman (Banjoman)

Several posts ago, I pointed this out too. It was determined that this is a paint chip resistant paint, that helps prevent getting paint chips in that area. It's not new for the 2005, as it shows up on older Tacomas as well.

I have seen several different descriptions of the limited slip. Is the limited slip on the '05 truly a mechanical implementation or is it achieved solely by pulsing the brakes?
  • aa00aa00 Member Posts: 30
Anyone with the D/C offroad #2 package please let me know if you have the shiny alloy rims that are found on the sport tacomas as well? The dealer is now telling me that some have the brushed alloys instead? The brushed alloys that I saw on a truck at the dealer looked cheap!! Did not think this was the case. Thought they were to have the shiny alloys with lettered tires. Please advise.........Thanks..

So.. I keep my trucks for a long time. My '86 toyota is still going strong. I use synthetics throughout and I want to do the same for my new 4x4 sport double cab with the 6 speed. Does anyone know the capacities and gear weight recommendations of the tranny/transfer case and the differentials? thx in advance!
  • tacomadavetacomadave Member Posts: 24
The manufacture only recommends 5w-30 because of the increased mpg and faster warm up.

    Mechanical

I hope that you're right!! The reason that I ask is because Motor Trend's "Truck Trend" March/April issue (page 40) states that ".... those without the offroad package offer a system that uses the ABS to simulate a limited-slip differential..."

does anyone have a sound system installed in the new Tacoma yet? Im trying to get ideas on where to mount some 12s.
  • bigandybigandy Member Posts: 70
This paint is specifically meant to resist chipping from rock and gravel thrown up by the tires. Look at a 10 or 15 year old Toyota and you'll see the same thing. My guess is it thicker and somewhat flexible, resulting in the textured surface. It is not a flaw, but a positive approach to a real problem.
  • ironmoironmo Member Posts: 7
Hey, has anyone got any credible information on what is/are the best motor oil brands to use at 5w-30 weight? I don't want a brand that causes sludge.

Are FRAM oil filters pretty good?

I thought about using that Lucas oil stabilizer in my 05 TACO as well, but have never tried it.

    BANJOMAN-

Yes I forgot to mention that it is covered by like a little rubber plug. I took my drill and drilled through after taking the plug off. Took all of 2 seconds, in fact you could probably just puncture through with a screwdriver. The one on the driver's side is a little hard to get to as you mentioned, that's why I used the passenger one. It is very easy to access the wire once you feed it through. No need to remove anything and nothing in the way, just feed it through a ways and then you will be able to see it hanging from the inside (underneath the glove box area). Just keep feeding until you can see it, grad it and pull, simple as that.

    Good luck!
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I have an article aved somewhere with very good info on oils. It's late and I'm tired so I'll look for it later.

I hear FRAM filters suck, but yet I also know people who have used them for years...
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Read the article in post #2378. (Motorcycleinfo).

There is somewhere on that site that talks about different oil filters, and from what I remember, the Fram's aren't very good.

I just picked up 3 PureONE filters for my Taco, and 2 for the wife's TSX at Pepboys tonight. They were only $5.99, cheaper than some of the other brands out there... The Mobil 1 filters were around $12, and are also supposed to be a good filter, but have less surface area of the filter element than the PureONE's.

Use synthetic oil if you don't want sludge. If you go with a 5000 mile service interval, instead of the ridiculous 3000 mile interval, you will be paying just about the same amount of money, only getting synthetic, and helping the environment at the same time.
  • sbsyncrosbsyncro Member Posts: 66
My general feeling is that Fram filters suck. I buy OEM filters only.

For more info that you would probably ever want about oil filters check out

Does anyone know if the 2005 Taco V6 has a belt or a Chain...getting different answers and the manual says nothing about T-belt change interval.
  • johndeerejoejohndeerejoe Member Posts: 19
I've been told by my dealer that if I use an oil filter other than toyota, it will void my warranty. However I'm not certain if this is true. also don.t use wix filters, they really suck

Volley-I'm also interested in your how to's. Now that I had the leak problem fixed, I'm ready to put a decent sounding system in. Any advise where/how to install a couple of 12" woofers?
I have a DC Prerunner. Thanks for your input.

I got a list of the "how to's". Thanks a lot, they were a big help! I installed a pair of 6x9's boston acoustic speakers in the front and a pair of boston acoustic 6 1/2 in the rear. Using the stock amp it sounded like crap. The stock speakers, crapy as they were, were matched with the stock amp for optimum sound. Any aftermarket speakers will require an aftermarket amp. The speakers took me about an hour to do both front and back. I took the truck to Audio Express to install an Alping 450 5-channel amp. The amp fits behind one of the back seats. Behind the other is a Rockford Fosgate 8" phase 2 sub-woofer. The sub is inclosed in a custom box. It sounds amazingly great! Anything larger will not fit because of the depth of the woffer. The only way to put something bigger is to cut into the plastic behind the seat. Good luck!

I purchased a K&N filter off of ebay for $34.00 and it installed without a problem. It is hard to say if it increased performance since my truck is still in the break in period and I am not hard on it. I have been a believer of K&N for a long time and considering the thickness of the stock filter I expect to see some small improvements in mpg and hp. I currently see 20.5 mpg on my 2005 taco dc v6 auto.
