Good idea, 1morecanuck. I haven't bought a Tacoma yet, but when I do in the very near future, I intend to the following things:

    1. replace stock cd deck with one that can read mp3s
    2. add a tire-pressure monitoring system (the Tundra comes with one but not the Tacoma! go figure...), though I am still debating on this one because of cost trade-offs.
    3. maybe add oil pressure and voltage gauges--the former depends on whether it would void the warranty as there is already an oil pressure gauge of sorts (for the idiot light on the instrument panel).
    4. maybe replace latch on storage boxes in the bed with a lock and try waterproofing them
    5. if the composite bed turns out to be slippery when wet, maybe add a THIN coat of spray-on bed liner to the bed surface
    6. probably buy some of that Ozite stuff someone mentioned earlier (that was a really good idea!)

Gas attendants? Do you Canadians not know how to pump your own gas? :)

They fit very well, I'd say. Of course, you have some input into how tightly they fit, but I'm happy with them. Muddy feet on the dog and my spilled coffee will be much more tolerable with them!

I have a 05 Tacoma D-cab and I'm installing some additional switches to control extra lights I'm adding. Does anyone know if there are existing firewall grommets on the 05 that I can run wire thru? If not, where is the best location to drill a hole for a grommet? It seems really congested on the driver side with the master cylinder on the firewall. Been looking at this for a couple of days now and I am sorta stumped. Anyone out there have suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Banjoman

Toyota has issued a Tech Tip #2068 labeled 'Interior Cab Noise when Driving over Bump During Cold Weather'. I drove a PreRunner Sport 4x2 and heard this noise during warm weather as well. The tech bulletin involves having the dealer insert Teflon washers on the rear left side cab mount. Hopefully this should eliminate the noise. They are installing the washers and I will be checking to see if it solves the problem. I have a copy of the tech bulletin which I will scan and put up on this forum.

Just purchased a 2005 Tacoma PreRunner 4x2 and am having the dealer install the hitch. Seems the dealer only has a 4 pin wiring harness available. As I need a 7 wire system for my trailer which has a charging circuit and brakes, was wondering if anyone has wired in a brake controller and a charging circuit. kendj@shaw.ca

    Kendj:

If you don't mind, how much did they hit you up for the hitch and installation ???

    Thanks!

Like many others whose new Tacoma's make this annoying noise, I eagerly await your posting of Tech Tip #2068.

    Kendj,
How are you receiving Toyota tech tips? If their is a website or update list please post it on the site. I bet alot of us would find it useful.
  • kendjkendj Member Posts: 7
Hitch package is about $390 Canadian $'s installed. 4 wire trailer harness is about $100 installed.

I talked to the Toyota service rep where I have made a conditional offer to buy the 4x2 Prerunner Sport. The condition was they were to install the 'fix' on the rear cab bushing mounts and I will test drive it again prior to buying. How did I get a copy of the tech tip? Well I demanded the service rep to print me a copy as I wanted to be sure it really existed. I have a copy, it is authentic and will scan and post it here shortly. It's 3 pages with pictures of the mount shown.

    Anxiously awaiting the results...

Can't seem to be able to post any pictures or attachements on this website. Too bad. Send me a note and I will send the Toyota Tech Bulletin for fixing the popping/creaking noise.

banjoman - I used the one the passenger side. The hole actually has carpet behind it. I think there is one on the driver side too, but if you use that one make sure there are no wires behind the carpet that can be accidentally drilled.

Anyway, the holes are already in the firewall, just drill or punch (with a screwdriver) through the carpet. I can take a pic of it tomorrow if you need it.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
kendj - Thanks for posting the information. I too have the noise and would be very interested in the tech bulletin. Woud appreciate if you could email to tacomaoffroadgrl@msn.com

    Thanks!

Are they installing the Tacoma tow package or an aftermarket one?

The tow package that you can get with the Tacoma comes with a 7 pin harness. At least mine did, and all the ones I saw on the trucks coming off the transport truck yesterday did too.
  • kendjkendj Member Posts: 7
Yes, would like to see a pic of where you went thru the firewall. Will have to do that shortly.

    Hi all,

I normally keep a camper shell on my truck, as I did with my 1999 ExtraCab 4x4, as it allows me to securely leave tools, materials, camping gear, etc. in the back. I bought a white Tacoma 4x4 AccessCab in December and I've begun looking at shells for it.

I had a Leer 100XL on my previous truck and was largely happy with it. They've made some improvements and it looks better yet. Among other things, there is a keyless entry option now that seems attractive. Problem with the 100XL is that the 2005 Tacoma version doesn't yet exist. May be a month or two before it's released. Why in the world it is taking Leer so long to get this one out into production for such a popular truck is beyond me, but the bottom line is I'll have to wait if I want one of these.

Today I checked out the Snugtop Super Sport and it seems like a good shell too. One thing I didn't like was how low the shell itself comes at the back door. The top edge of the door extends up beyond the lower edge of the opening by 5" or 6" and making for a much smaller opening that I would like to see.

The good news is that nice factory installed racks are options on both shells, as is a fold down front window, allowing you to clean both windows without pulling the whole shell off.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone else who has information or opinions to share.

Volley - a pic would be good, I can't quite see where there are knockout holes in the firewall so that would be helpful. I know there are grommeted holes in the floor cuz I pulled my cb antenna cable thru the passenger side but these holes are not close to the dash at all.

    Thanks,
    Banjoman

    Hey,

I really want to know...did your 6 speed also "grind" while at low rpms and stop at higher rpms? I have not heard a grinding at idle on mine and it has shifted quite well. I only hear a grinding noise when at low rpms, like when it's time to downshift or depress the clutch. As far as I know, no grinding noise should be heard at low rpms at all, right? I think I'll go test drive another 6 speed for comparisons sake. It's good to know that Toyota is replacing any and hopefully all of those transmissions with new ones from Japan.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
So the 4.0L gets around 21.5 in mostly hwy driving.

Anybody with an I4 in your 05 TACO know what your mpg is?
  • stevepodstevepod Member Posts: 5
It took me 16 days. They had to critical order it from Japan. Check with your lemon laws in your state. In NY it it 30 days. You should be driving a new vehicle. In your Toyota paperwork there is a warranty book. Look up your state. i would be demanding a new truck.

A portion of the exhaust system on the 2005 Tacoma TRD with automatic transmission is mounted below a nearby frame crossmember--not good for off-road. I wonder if it's located above the frame in TRDs with 6 speed transmission. Can someone take a look and let me know? I have been unable to see or drive a 6 speed in the Chicago region. Everything I've seen so far is automatic.
    Thanks.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
I just slid underneath my 4.0L PreRunner on a creeper and checked the exhaust. The exhaust does not drop below the crossmembers at any point.

I owned a 99 Taco. I bought it from the dealer with flowmaster exhaust and nerf bars. I installed a supercharger and the FIPK from K&N. I also put new sneakers on it. It was my baby. One Sunday drive in a muddy field, I rolled it. Not to happy about that. I got out, and about 3 minutes later, it caught fire under the drivers side dash. Not sure why. I turned the vehicle off. Does anyone have info on Tacoma rollovers and possible fires. Looks like it came from the fuse box

My last post wasn't meant for this thread. Sorry guys/gals. But I now have a chance to purchase a new 2005!

I have a 2005 doublecab 4wd TRD with a six speed. Yes, the exhaust crossover pipe hangs down lower than the transfer case cross menber. This is unsafe and should be recalled.

Yeah it grinded in low rpm's rather than high. Usually in second gear most of the time and while i downshifted. Its going on 6 days with this damn corolla rental. Ill have to look up AZ lemon laws.

bb, hard to believe but my friend did that same thing to his 98 or 99 Tacoma. It was in a muddy field one Saturday or Sunday about 3 years ago. I was in the truck! The truck sat on it's roof for about 15-30 minutes before we could get a skidloader to flip it back over. And it drove fine. He still owns it. It's one of the things that have convinced me of Toyota's quality. He just beat the fenders back out, had the windshield replaced and that was it. Of course he was pretty unhappy about his good looking truck becoming a beater in the course of one afternoon, but worse things have happened.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
On the 4x4's does it look like they had no choice to route that exhaust under the crossmembers? Maybe someone could actually post a photo of that.

Following up on the tranny issues...I test drove a new 6 speed for comparison and listened for similar noises. The difference was very slight. Maybe after some miles accumulate the noise grows louder?

A friend of mine has a complete set of 6 bolt GM AEW BOSS 301 Chrome Rims mounted on 285-50-20 Forterra's which I'm looking to buy, but I'm not sure if the offset is correct for my new Tacoma? And what harm could be done if its not right?

Then the AEW website mentions a BSM# which I don't know what that is either and if not the right # what harm could be done?

    The offset of these rims is either 14mm or 20mm and the BSM is either 6.225 or 5.238 yet to be determined. {but once he finds the invoice and part# we will establish what he has}

Placing one along side my OEM 265-65-17 they are almost exactly the same height but one is under the load of the truck. The Boss were just a tad {less than 1/2"} higher and under load perhaps they will be even closer.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a million :-)

I too have been checking out toppers (for a Frontier). I've narrowed the choices to Leer, A.R.E., and Snugtop, though I'm still interested in looking at any others that might be recommended.

Snugtop, like other topper makers, does offer other models with higher roofs or taller doors (or both). Trouble is, all the sales reps (all brands) have told me the first models to be issued will be the cab-high models--probably because they cost the least and therefore will appeal to the most people. That means you'll have to wait even longer to get one of the other topper models.

To make things worse, there are several new trucks out this year, so the topper makers are scrambling to make their molds. Also, at least 2 reps told me there is about a 6-month lag time between when the trucks first appear in the region where the toppers are manufactured and when the toppers are available. So some parts of the country will get the toppers sooner than others, depending on which trucks are available there first.

I guess we'll all just have to wait.

I just had a SnugTop Lid installed last week. I was originally told it took 3 weeks to get it in but mine took 5 so I guess they are pretty busy.

It looks pretty good...clickie here to see some photos:

I just got the recall notice in the mail today, I called the Dealer and was told to bring it in tomorrow morning to be fixed, they said I could wait around for an hour or so until it is ready.
I guess as far as recalls go, at least this one seems to be easily and quickly fixed! Anyone else have it done yet?

    Boo,

What do you have to do to remove that spiffy top if you wanted to haul your mother-in-law's stuff out of the county? Is is a hassle or just a snap?

    Boo:
I have the same color but a lb sport. Am also interested to install one. How much does it cost.

By the way your truck looks great with the lid!!!

  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
A snap but takes 2 people because of the size of it. You just remove the 2 o-pins releasing the gas struts, then remove the two pins in the front, release the lid from the bed.

Total price was $750 which included painting, installation, carpeting inside, and a lifetime warranty.
  • buffalonickelbuffalonickel Member Posts: 113
I would assume that it is relatively dry from water leakage of any type? Do they drill into the composite bed rail to secure the lid?

What exactly is the standard wheel on the trd offroad package for the double cab? Aren't they all supposed to have the shiny alloy wheel? I saw a red double cab trd offroad tonight with just the brushed wheels on it? It looked like some type of standard rim on maybe the regular tacoma? Also, the tires were not lettered as I thought they were on the offroad pack. Unless he switched them around already. Just curious as I have a D/C shortbed with offroad pack #2 due in next week....Thanks for any info....

    looking at prerunner V6.

I want a manual tranny. Haven't heard the greatest about tacmoma 6 speed though. Any comments from owners w/ 6 speed or folks that driven both?

TRD #1 - like the locking diff, sport seats, 115v power, not sure on suspension as I primary am on pavement. Any thoughts, will the ride be that much rougher than a regular SR5?

sport - don't like fake hood scoop, no chrome surround.

have been too busy lately to read new posts so i dont know if anyone has already discovered this but there are some 05 parts on ebay now.

also i was just looking around at some of the tacos on there and came across one that has had some serious mods done to it, but at looking closer at it i found it looks like the front drive shaft is missing. just wondering if its just me. the item # is:4534953727
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
The Toyota 6 speed has longer throws between gears. It feels more 'truck like.'

The Frontier's 6 speed felt stiffer, but has slightly shorter throws. Feels more car like.

I think my TRD rides great. I like the extra stiffness especially for the corners.
