btw, I still like the truck, but I'm really bummed out about this. I'm a picky owner, especially when the vehicle has less than 2000 miles, but the "Bad" stuff above really isn't major enough to fight with the dealer about (except for the missing hardware). I guess I should feel lucky that I haven't experienced something much worse like frame problems, electical problems or engine issues? :(

There are soooo many good things about this truck that I would buy it again over the competition. But my advice to anyone that is still looking is to wait until the TSBs come out and until the dealers can acknowledge the problem and inform you that action has been taken on their part so that you will not be purchasing a truck that maybe has a leak issue. Good luck.

larry10 - I am not sure. I haven't done the mod myself. The locks look stainless steele. I would bet that there are other locks you could use in that size. A trip to the hardware store may be in order so I can check it out. That will probably a "killing time in the summer" mod for me though! :-)

hammaa - Don't listen to Circuit City (I wouldn't let them touch my truck either IMO). Anyway, in the 05 Tacos the front doors are 6x9s for sure and the rears are 6 1/2s. I will be easiest to replace them with those factory sizes although some have bought the new $50 per pair + shipping adapters that are out now or made their own to install other sizes...no thanks. I'll shoot ya an email with a how-to I used and was very easy to do.

But I betcha if you try ordering from toyotaparts.com the product will be more and the shipping will be more as well !

I'm finding the $99 shipping and handling charge hard to believe. I was charged $304.75 for the steps and a freight charge of $45.71. I live in northern Arizona. I do note that you don't get a shipping and handling charge if you click on "Buy" at the www.trdparts4u.com site. In fact, there is not "Buy" button. You have to fill out a detailed order form, including part number, your name, address, and your truck's VIN and click on submit order. Then a page comes up with the freight info. I was reluctant to go through this process the first time I visited the site in order to learn the freight charges, but finally I completed the form and the above prices are what I got.

With all due respect to 12572, I fear he or she may be going to the wrong website.

Larry. Noticed you are using the bike rack attachment for the tie downs, or so it appears. I have two of these, but have yet to use them, (the season isn't here yet for me), but I was wondering, how are you securing the rear wheel, or rear part of the frame? Do you tie it down to the corner tie down in the back of the bed?

I also corresponded back and forth with a Barbara King that works there and she was giving me her cost on shipping which was a little bit cheaper

Sonicflux: You might also try spraying some detail spray and clay barring the windows...the clay bar should strip off the calcium from the water pretty easy. (I wouldn't put vinegar on car windows.)

    Good luck with the truck!

    Folks:

Love this forum and love my new Tacoma. Got it one week ago. It's a 7190, the DBL cab long bed without the off-road package. Had a hard time finding it, but I got it.

Only one question (so far): When I put it into drive and start forward for the first time after ignition, it lets out a pretty loud BOING! I'm guessing/hoping/praying it's the ABS kicking in.

Can anybody put my mind at ease?
  • hammaahammaa Member Posts: 79
volley - Thanks...that's what I thought...good to have confirmation from someone "in the know". I look forward to your "how to". Take care.

After the recent heavy rains in Florida, the driver side floor mat was soaked. Not just a little, but standing water. I had gone through car washes before and never noticed the problem. The difference was I was driving in heavy rain and puddles. I took it to the dealer and they had their "Leak expert" come in to fix it. After getting my truck back, I noticed there was a lump under the carpet like someone left wallet under there. I have an appointment to get that fixed next week as the manager agreed it wasn’t acceptable. Apparently the leak was at a seam in the floorboard area and only leaked when driving in water. BTW, my Taco is a 4D Prerunner TRD sport built 11/04. From what I’ve read the leaks have been fixed on trucks with a build date of 12/04 on.
Even with this leak issue, I wouldn’t trade it for any other truck on the market. 5000 miles and I’m averaging 21 MPG. I ordered a 3 inch lift and new wheels Friday… can’t wait to get them on.

i pulled the trigger on westin's platinum series chrome tube steps for a dc short bed. i bought them at truckstuffusa.com and paid about 395, including shipping and mounting kit. i thought this was very reasonable for chromed tube steps from a reputable manufacturer...maybe they have the dee zee tube steps that you are after? i did notice that prices for some other parts were higher than at other sites.

Okay, I just spoke to my local Taco dealer and my Taco will be here later this month. This is what I have coming: Indigo Ink DC PreRunner LB with TRD Sport Package #4, Daytime Running Lights, Side Airbags/Curtains, Roof Rack, Floor Mats, VIP Alarm, Tube Steps and Deluxe Radio (Non-JBL)...all for $26,800.00 + fees.
  • hobohobo Member Posts: 27
I have a 05 DC 4x4 LB with 1200 miles on it (build date 01/05) and I think I finally heard what others are talking about regarding the "popcorn machine" sound. I heard it this morning and I was able to reproduce it. It was happening when I drove over puddles or strips of water on the side of the road. It came from the passenger side. My guess is that it's rain/sand that's being flung up from the road hitting some tinny part of the underbody, sounded like it was hitting a metal sheet. It was a bit annoying -- made the truck sound cheaply made.

Anyway, I also drove over several potholes around the same time and there was NO sound whatsoever from the suspension except what I expected.

Anyway, still love my Tacoma! From the previous post, it seems that water may be getting in from underneath, which is why most car washes won't show the issue? It's raining now (first time it's been outside) so I'll see when I get home.

I have ordered a Tacoma which will be made in Freemont, Ca on the 14th, Access Cab, 4x4 (auto), TRD#2, Silver. Since it is being made next week, can i assume that all the leaks and other issues should be fixed? I paid $26,460 before tax licence, and registration.

No need to secure rear wheel, it just sets in one of the groves in the bed the bike is secure! Very easy and fast to transport bike. Since they don't offer an attachment for the front wheel I purchased a wheel bag (about 12 dollars) ya just slide the wheel in , zip it up and throw it in your backseat, this way you don't have to worry about messing up your interior or the wheel! In a few minutes i am going to load up the bike as a matter of fact, when i do I will take and post some pictures showing my set up.

I was curious if the side curtain airbags were installed at the dealership or if your Tacoma was ordered with them.

Also, was the moonroof installed by a local vendor? Any pics?

    Thanks.

Great forum... I have been looking at the postings ever since I got my truck in late Jan and finally decided to sign up.

I wish we could buy our New Tacoma's as cheaply in Nova Scotia,or Canada... My 05 loaded 4 door TRD-SR5 4x4 Auto, listed for about $38K plus shipping, and theft incription, taxes, and hood deflector/window deflectors, Hitch & wiring, bed mat, extang platinum bedcover, extended warranty, then the 15% tax cleaned me out for about $48,000 of my canuk bucks. Of note the current exchange rate is about $1.23 canadain to buy a US$.

    You guys are lucky :-)

The only pet peeves noticed were the lack of illumination on the 4x4 knob for night time driving, the dimness of the overhead compass/temp guage, and a noticible smudge on the glove box cover, which I have seen on several other new tacoma's.

There isn't a day that I don't get positive comments on its looks and style and staring glances at streetlights.

Its a real head turner, I m sure you will enjoy yours too.

Well, I just printed out the page( I WAS on the right site) from there and stopped by my dealer's pars dept. They checked it online and offered to give it to me for 329$ - will be in tomorrow. I paid right there and will have it tomorrow. No shipping. Happy.
I also ordered the Acess roll on tonneau cover drom Real truck - they do have a 30$ off now and free shipping. Thanks to Tacomaoffroadgrl for that info.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Hey, thanks for the pictures. I noticed that the installation manual says that you need to secure the back of the bike somehow, that's the reason I asked. It would however, be pretty secure, as long as you got the front fork put on correctly.

However, in a sudden stop, I wonder if the rear of the bike could have the possibility to come up off the bed floor, and cause the rear to swing around in the bed?

I guess if you wanted to be on the safe side, you could always just put a bungie around the rear wheel and attach to the left or right tie-down near the rear corner of the bed...

Can't wait to get back to mountain biking...that first ride is going to hurt!

I got on the internet for preference ordering a tacoma. There is a dealer out of tempe arizona (phoenix), that told me go to edmunds or any site that does invoice, find out what invoice is and add $750.

Not sure how the state to state taxes work, but just thought I'd pass the info along. Not sure if I'm allowed to pass along the name of the salesman I talked to, but no matter what, I would recommend shopping on the internet. Especially if you have patience - and don't mind driving a few hundred miles to get a better deal.
  • megamolemegamole Member Posts: 22
Volley if you get any more info on the locks for the bed compartments please post them. I would love to be able to lock some tie down straps or other offroad things in the bed. Back seats can only hold so much.

Is there any way to see a picture of your truck with the Westin tube steps and how far do they stick out if a person didn't want to use them other than looks and ding protection?
  • ecotrklvrecotrklvr Member Posts: 519
No need for CLR to clear the hard water stains. We've got that here in Southern California as well. Get a quart of warm, sudsy water, with a quarter-cup of baking soda dissolved in it. Use a soft cloth or sponge and it'll come right off. It's the alkalinity that does it, not the powder, so make sure it's dissolved.

This works on the painted surfaces as well. I always follow this up with a good rinsing and coat of wax.

    Cheers.

For those of you concerned with fuel economy of your new Tacoma, there was a very interesting piece on NBC Nightly News this evening. It addresses the inconsistencies between the EPA sticker estimates and real world numbers. It also said legislation may be changing to address the issue. FYI

Here is the story online http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7128017
  • utvnututvnut Member Posts: 13
What city are you located?!? How did you get all of that for that price? Oops, you said pre-runner, how much less than 4X4?
Also, did you consider resale value for the pre-runner vs. 4X4?
    What is the MSRP?
Sorry about all the questions, I've been looking in northern Virginia and checking out the Ridgeline too. I think I want the Indigo blue, DC 4X4 LB Sport, but Pkg 8, keep getting 28 to 29 quotes, that's why I havent ruled out the Honda, close prices.

In the past I wondered how fast I could shift my 6 speed PreRunner TACO(considering the low 1st gear and long throws). I found out having to merge from 0 mph into some high speed traffic.

I revved it up and dropped the clutch losing traction at both rear tires(265/16), but they hooked up fast(limited slip). Wound out 1st gear and powershifted into 2nd spinning both the tires a 2nd time. I quickly reached 50-55 mph and went into 3rd spinning the tires again. I was impressed with the speed and the shifts were as fast as any manual I've driven. The Tacoma 4.0L is light and is a sleeper. The 6 speed enables the driver to sqeeze every bit of horsepower and torque from it.

Needless to say, it was a lot of fun. Don't powershift unless you have to, it makes a big scene! A great combination of pickup truck/sports car speed.

Hi, I'm thinking of the DC 4X4 LB also, any problems turning, parking in shopping centers etc. with the extra length?

I can't decide if the LB is worth it or just get the regular bed and maybe an extender.
What do you think now, driving, parking looks and all on long vs. short?

So far the MPG in my last tank this weekend back from Louisiana came to 307 miles on 14.1 gallons. Not too bad, with some in town.

The tires (Dunlop AT20s), were trashed (Discount Tire gave me $180 for them) at 845 miles for Michelins LTX M/S SL 265/70/16,...much better. But it seems to pull to the right a little and I just had it aligned at the dealer yesterday and they said all was ok, but still pulls. Before the Michelins it was straight but shaky Dunlop AT20 tires were making me pull my hair out. I may give them a rotate and see what happens.

I too, hear a small tick out of the drive's side exhaust,...probably just all of the exhaust valves expressing there opinion. When I floor it I cannot here it over all the horses screaming.

The truck runs better on 89 octane or better. I have been putting in 5 gallons of premium and the rest 87 octane. It runs great and for only $1.00 more for a tank then pure 87....try it!!

There is a suspension clunk in the back passenger side,..I suspect it was the leaf spring and the dealer tightened it, but it remains slighty.

I love the truck, but the T100 with the 3.4 from Japan was the perfect truck and overall better than the Taco.

I have owned a '92 Toyota pickup (perfect again), a Sequoia, two Camry's, the T100 and now the '05...I love Toyotas.

"utvnut": I've got the DC LB, and unless you either absolutely need the 6' bed or can't stand the look of the 5' bed, I'd recommend going with the shorter bed. I went with the longer bed for cosmetic reasons (I think it looks more balanced and less "sawed off"), but I gotta tell ya that I question that decision every time I'm in a parking lot or am backing up somewhere. This thing has a wider turning radius than my buddy's full-size GMC Yukon, and so is kind of a monster to move around in tight spaces...

I absolutely love my truck, but I definately have to be much more aware in tight spaces than I ever was before with my old Pre-Runner. Good Luck.
  • hammaahammaa Member Posts: 79
OOPS...If you're taking notes, when I said "Pre-Runner" above, I meant "4-Runner". I've had a '97 4-runner for the past 6-years, and I can't believe how much smoother my truck rides and more powerful the engine is!

I know I will be the one who has to live with my truck, but just curious.

I'm in the process of purchasing a 2005 Toy Tacoma DC 4DR V6 Auto Short Bed

I have two choices, Indigo Ink or Silver.

I love both colors, especially the Indigo, problem is that with Indigo, it will show the dirt and dings more then the Silver. In addition, I think SIlver is a more nuetral color so if I was to sell down the road, it might be easier to sell.

That being said, the price differnce is only 100.00 (Indigo is more), thoug it has an Auto Dimming Mirror and Exhaust by Valor. Both are TRD #2 Packages.

I guess what I would like to get from this Message is other people's opinion of the Indigo Ink color. Thanks!

Traded in my '03 Honda Pilot for an '05 D/C TRD #2,4WD. What a good decision I made! Absolutely zero problems after ten days, and what a delightful buying experience. Dealt with Tim's Toyota in Prescott, AZ (talk to "RAZ") $200 over dealer COST, and no BS. I've bought over 100 cars in my life and this was far and away the best buying experience ever! Also, do check out the trdparts4u.com website as you will not beat there prices and service. The ugly TRD rear flank stickers removed easily with my wifes hairdryer as did the script on the tailgate.

imin2mx:This leak thing has got me worried. My build date was 11/04.Just curious does your truck have the toyo guard package(which I believe includes some undercoating).
  • utvnututvnut Member Posts: 13
Indigo Ink is my first choice. The silver looks nice and does not show dirt as much but it is boring. The darker colors are a little harder to keep clean but look better when clean as well.

My choices are the Indigo Ink, Black, then Impulse Red.

I live in Maryland (3 miles north of DC) and picked up my '05 Double Cab Sport V6M SB about 2 weeks ago. I did the Internet pricing and found $500 to $700 over invoice.
I ordered it in December using a buying service that, at the time, the contract price was invoice. It turns out another dealer, not the one associated with the buying service, got the truck I wanted. I took the purchase order with $0 over invoice pricing and they honored it. The dealer still made the holdback, the $99 processing fee and got credit for moving inventory.

When I was researching my purchase, the N. VA. dealers wanted $299 processing fee(additional profit).

Remember, you can buy it anywhere. A local Toyota dealer will be glad to do any warranty service. It also makes it easier to turn down service contracts when you aren't going to go back.

Mine is Speedway Blue - I'm still impressed at the whole package every time I get in.
  • hammaahammaa Member Posts: 79
go with silver...I want to keep my indigo ink color more unique.

My build date is about the same as yours, perhaps the same day! I have no leak. Built in Fremont,CA. Go look under your truck and see if you have the putty/caulk like i do , see second album at link below. If you do you probably are in good shape if not...errrr...GL

No, it doesn't have toyo guard.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
manaraki - I have the exact truck and mine is silver. My first silver vehicle actually. I can't say enough how much I love it. My last truck was black and although it looked great clean, keeping it that way was a lot of maintenance. I went over 2 weeks without washing my truck (a long time for me) and it still looked as good as the day I washed it. Both colors will resale well IMO. I would go with silver obviously but I would get the dealer to through the dimming mirror and the exhaust tip on the silver one for the same $100 more (the mirror alone is over $200 if you try to buy it later on...)
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
utvnut - I am in Maryland also (western MD tho). I would look into MD and PA dealers over VA ones. VA dealers do seem to have higher "processing fees". Also, contact a bunch of dealers internet sales departments online and let them all compete for your business. Get quotes and once you get one that you like either buy from them or take it to a closer dealer and have them match/beat the price. I also find that I get better deals dealing with the Fleet Salesperson also. Another option is to go on Edmunds or some other internet pricing site and get the invoice price of the truck you want and see what others are paying and just tell the dealer you are willing to pay X amount of dollars, that's it. They will typically accept because they want your business no matter how many times they tell you they have to "talk to my manager" or "this is a brand new model it's hot right now" Don't buy it, tell them the Frontier is hot too! Haha

BTW - The pre-runner is a commodity in the Tacoma world IMO, I don't think there would be a problem with resale.

For the truck you are looking at, 28K isn't an absolutely terrible price.

As for the Ridgeline, looked at one in person the other day. If you are going to use your truck as a TRUCK, the Ridgeline will dissappoint you. That's my 2/100 of a dollars worth! :)

I am interested in the "how to's" you mentioned in your message. I am looking to replace both front door and rear door speakers. I was wondering if a 6 1/2" speaker will fit on the lower front door area. Dod you have a problem with speaker depth? I was told that the door panels were shallow and some speakers would not fit. Any thoughts? my email is jlbrowniii@aol.com Thanks for the "how to's"

Just as long as it isn't Speedway Blue :)
