I think what you're noticing with the automatic transmission is lock-up. The mechanic tried to explain it to me one day when we were on a test drive. He said that Toyota automatic transmissions go into lock-up on every gear, whereas other automakers only do it in the highest gear. Basically, I understood it to be something like an overdrive gear in every gear, so instead of shifting, say, directly from 2'nd to 3'rd, it shifts into 2'nd lock-up, then 3'rd. It's supposed to make for smoother shifting.

Both the 05 Tacoma and 05 Frontier have the drive-by-wire throttle system. I expressed my concern to the Frontier salesman about this drive-by-wire system being potentially dangerous in event of malfunction, and he said if it does have a malfunction, the engine will shut down. Great. I prefer the old-fashioned cable system going from the gas pedal to the throttle.

You and me both. But you stated the problem with the cable system: "old-fashioned." I suppose we old-fashioned drivers will just have to stick with old-fashioned automobiles. ;D

I picked up my Tacoma Double CabwSR5#8 about two weeks and 400 miles ago. I like everything about it especially the size. I traded from a Highlande so the Tacoma feels big to me. The Tundra is just a lot larger than I have any interest in. If the money is the same I would and did go for the Tacoma.
I wouldn't get the tundra unless I felt a real need for the V8,

You may have to wait a long time to hear the keyfob chirp. I spoke to Toyoya Customers Service Centr and was told that the Owner's Manual was mistaken. There is no Key fob Chiro in the design of the 05 Tacoma.

Yes...I've noticed my truck jumping forward on its own (with the brakes applied) on several ocassions.
Didn't think that much about it until now. Does anybody have any idea what would cause that ??
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
Thanks for that info. My dealer could not find the leak's source on my truck. According to this forum, the possible places are at the windshield cowl seam and now the welding seam by the floorboard. I wish the info could be a little more specific. They could not make it take on water by spraying it. So, it might be that welding seam.

has anyone else bought chrome tube steps for their taco? i'm getting the 4x4 dc sb and am not sure whether to go with dee-zee or westin...any thoughts? i believe they both go for about 400-425.

I'm happy to report that I've finally realized some mpg improvement. My 5th tank went down to 17.3 mpg (down from 17.5 mpg previously), but my 6th tank got me 19.2 mpg. It was, however, 100% freeway miles, but I was either in stop-n-go traffic, or flying at 80-85 mph, so I'm pretty stoked. I've got the DC LB TRD Sport PreRunner, and have been using 91-octane since my 3rd tank. Hopefully I'll get similiar mileage on my 7th tank now that I'm back to my typical driving routine (80/20 freeway/normal). I love my Tacoma!

I plan on preference ordering an 05 Tacoma Prerunner Access Cab 4cyl 5man 2wd base. Sorry-I don't want the chrome, convenience, etc.-just want a 5sp. man. pick up with good mpg, great payload and one I can beat up. I have no negotiating power now because of the supply/demand and pref. order-Anyone think the demand will drop anytime soon???

Anyone preferenced ordered? What can I expect?

BTW-been reading your issues and my San Diego dealer claims she has not heard of ANY problems, nor the jd powers csi rank.?

The Toyota web site I looked at said "regular fuel" FWIW my 5.3 V8 Yukon monstrosity get's 17mpg every tank in 50/50 mixed driving. Thats manually figured no computer. I would have hoped the Taco got closer or better than 20mpg.

I am sorry to hear so many of you are experiencing noise from the motor or where ever they seem to come from, i have no noise of clunks or any other unusaul sounds, might be that my subs vibrated them all into place, LOL i dont hear anything even with no musi just smooooth, i have just about 1000 miles, but we will see,

On another note i heard gas prices might jump up 24 cents a gal in the next 2-3 weeks, and close to $3/gal in the summer, why dont the oil companies stop ripping us off, they have made the trillions, just go away already, i am sure all of you will agree with me.

I just installed the DeeZee tube steps a couple of days ago. I also think they look great. Installation was a snap even for me, and I am about as mechanically challenged as you can get. [Of course, the cab may fly off the truck the next time I drive it.]

Because installation is so easy, I would recommend checking out the online suppliers. I got my tube steps from www.trdparts4u.com but also checked out www.toyotapart.com. Both of these are Toyota dealers. Be sure to add shipping when comparing prices. My total cost was about $350.

No I have the air control knob turned to the far left, hands and feet. But it sends in some air no matter where I have the knob, but the small amount of air goes to where the knob is at, so maybe it's normal. (I tested it.)
  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
    MrVair:

I asked the same question about my 05 Tacmoa when I frist got it (The lurching I felt when I was waiting at a stop sign or light.)

Everyone said it's normal with Toyotas...remember you have 245 horsies in there!

Just keep a firm hold on the brake pedal....you'll not even notice it after a while.

I haven't had this noise in the front door. However, one thing I did notice when I took the door panels off to install new speakers, I notice that the small trim pieces are help on with little plastics clips. These clips fell off very easily. They fell off down into the door. So as you can imagine plastic and metal was not a good mix. There were a couple of them I was going to just leave but after putting the door panels back on they rattled so I ended up having to take the panels back off and fish them all out. Just a long shot but maybe you have some clips down in there...

Both trucks are good choices. It really is a matter of which one fit your needs. If you need the bigger size then go for the Tundra. I too considered one before I bought my Taco, but I really had no need for the V8 and the gas mileage was a real turn off for me considering this is my daily driver. Can't go wrong with the Tundra or Taco. Test drive both and go with which ever you like best and for which one fits your needs best.

Be thankfull you have heat. My 05 Tacoma has had no heat since 12/10/04. THis was the day I purchased it. THe piece that opens the door and lets heat inside cab broke 3 hours after I purchased it. First Toyota said there was no part # for it. They have sent wrong parts twice. The dealership took a photo of part and faxed it in. They now say the part may be shipped on 3/09 or 3/14. They have my cab gutted. Entire dash, gauges, and center console is out. They have had truck since 1/20/05 and have had me in a rental. Ive been in touch with Toyota on numerous occasions about this to no avail. They even mentioned arbitration. I told them to go for it. Now they want me to take another truck but they want 6.5K difference. I told them no way.

If anyone still having problems with the water leak take the vehicle to the dealer and in order to fix it the dealer most put your truck in the body shop. This is what need to be done to repair it, the body shop must removed the dashboard and all the insulation, once the dashboard is removed there is a seam area by the windshield and the fire wall that apparently was not sealed. The body shop will seal the area, also make sure that the hose behind the windshield is replaced. it took my dealer 5 days to find the problem and to fix it. if the dealer said that they don't know about the problem have theme contact my dealer PRECISION TOYOTA IN TAMPA they found my leak.

I would test drive them and I think I would be leaning toward the Tundra. These trucks will see their last year in service in '06 the way it stands now. But note that the '05 Tacoma and the Tundra are, for all practical purposes, the same size. Tundra has the modified Lexus V-8 and it has been a proven workhorse for years.

I just took delivery on an '05 Tacoma, so I can say they are much different than the old Tacomas.
Perhaps some of the other folks in this thread can give you a comparison?

Has anyone in this discussion thread gone from a Tundra to an '05 Tacoma?

I had an '03 Tacoma with a very saturated floor mat. While the deluge was raining cats and dogs, I strung up a paper towel tent underneath the dashboard in hopes that that might identify whether or not water was entering the driver's side cab from atop. It was dry. I think my leak was the windshield because I noticed it the morning after the rain and the truck was sitting all night. And I think the "water-line" followed the weld around to the floor. So the weld and the windshield may be suspect.

There is an awful lot of stuff put together in the cab and it doesn't take much for water to find its way in.

I ordered in December and took delivery in March. As to negotiations: dealers want to sell these rigs and their greatest fear is that the competition will take away their sales. Simply put: start dealing.

And I am with you on all the frills. I traded in a TRD and didn't want all that stuff on the new truck. Instead I had them install side-curtain airbags (gonna be haulin' grandkids one day), an after market sunroof (man is that thing cool or what--w/2preset positions and if it rains it closes automatically), a Platinum Warranty for $895(a "no-loop hole warranty that includes everything), and an extender bed.

And like you fph, I use the machine.

Do those deezee pipes run the full length of both doors on that long bed?

I got the same number as the 1st tank: 16.5 MPG. The truck is 2 weeks old, almost 600 miles on it. My driving is all subburban, 30 MPH residential, some freeway. I just don't see how this is going to improve to 20 MPG like some people have reported.

My method is note the total miles travel, set the trip computer to 0 when refill. Don't top off, just let the pump stop. See how many gallons it takes, then divide it by the miles travelled. So far it's consistent at 16.5 on regular unleaded. This new tank is premium. I notice the improve in power. We'll see how the MPG does next week.

Thanks for the info. I sent a copy of it to my dealer and hopefully something will get done. I cannot believe all the trouble they will have to go through to fix it. It has to be more than a windshield leak, because the dealer hosed it down at least two times pretty good and nothing happened.

Hey, does anyone know why Toyota claims it's access cab holds 5 people (last time I looked)? There are two plastic pieces in the center of those jumper seats that are placed right where a 3 person could sit(what are they for?). I cannot understand why they did that, because it holds 4 instead of 5 people with them.

I'll be revealing my age but, I have driven the great 300+ horsepower cars of the 1960's and there was never a problem with any of them lurching when at a stop. More than 300 horsies!
  • aa00aa00 Member Posts: 30
Hey will11- what kind of tacoma did you get from precision? When did you purchase? I had one on order since dec.
  • walterswalters Member Posts: 22
I checked my mileage today and got over 21 MPG for the second tank in row on my Access Cab Prerunner V6 automatic. I don't drive hard (well, maybe once in a while I do), but this is a mix of city / hiway probably about 50/50. I also went through the carwash and haven't noticed any wetness. So, I was happy as a clam about those items. Decent mileage and what I would call a FAST vehicle -- love the way that engine snarls when you tromp on it!

But, I did find my first problem today. I looked under the truck and found a leak at the AC line where it's connected to the condenser on the lower right front of vehicle (can see it easily just by looking under the front of car). Some oil had seeped from the connection and there was yellow dye in it, which makes me wonder if they already had discovered the problem before delivery or if the cars come with dye in the AC system. The AC is working great (we need it in Seattle these days -- one weird "winter"), but this definitely is a problem. I'm guessing the O-ring is damaged from a sloppy installation, so it shouldn't be a major fix but still annoying.

On this lurch several mentioned. I haven't noticed it on my Taco, but some cars lurch when the AC compressor cycles on because the engine control unit increases the idle to compensate for the load. This would happen even in winter if you are using the defroster. I would think it was normal unless it's truly a problem for the driver.

The water leak -- on tundrasolutions one guy who was a Toyota tech mentioned removing the front fender to seal a 'cowl seam', so I'm wondering if this removal of the dash is necessary.

Anway, I find my new Tacoma awesome. I got back in my old car today -- 84 Nissan King Cab pickup -- talk about two different worlds!

Has anyone heard a loud high pitch squeak coming from there rear end when hitting a bump?
  • litlejoe58litlejoe58 Member Posts: 4
I have brought my 05 tacoma in 4 times for them to fix the loud squeak in the rear which I know in the passenger shock. It was finally changed after the arguing with the service manager because they told me that is were it is coming from but didn't want to replace because toyota said there is nothing wrong with the shock. Well I am here to tell you there is something wrong with the shock. I was finallly told by the dealership that well these are new shocks that toyota came out with on this new truck and that they just make that noise. I would love to know if someone else is having the same problem. Thanks for any kind of help.

I just installed new speakers with them connected to amp so it sounds really nice but I was woundering if any body can tell me where to find dash mount kits for the 05 taco, the audio store i went to didnt have them yet so i couldnt buy the aftermaket stereo deck yet, but if someone can tell i would appreciate it, thanks. I now have near 1000 watts between the speakers and subs, i have my truck pretty much decked out, just need the extra kick you would get from the new radio.

  • engineerbooengineerboo Member Posts: 45
Chiefman1: No, my truck doesn't really take off when I put it in gear but I have noticed I can't push too hard on the accelerator when starting off or the rear wheels will spin, especially if on gravel or sand. Oh, remember I'm at 7,000 feet here so I've lost a lot of horsepower just in that fact plus I put 85 octane so would probably get that same "kick" you feel at lower altitude and higher octane.

I have an automatic transmission...have you noticed that, when driving down hills, the truck will down-shift if you hit the brakes to slow down? I really like this feature and never had a vehicle that did this. (Which does help save on brake pad wear.)

Don't worry about your brakes...better to wear down the pads than to be downshifting into low gear (3rd) to slow down. (Costs a LOT less than tranny repairs!)

look on the internet you can find them for cheaper than that. plus free shipping and no tax
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
ush00z - You are still very much in the break in period of your truck. Be patient the mileage will get better. Also make sure you are using quality gas even if you don't use premium use good gas. Also depending on where you are, winter gas has a different mix and will effect your mileage too (usually cold climates)
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
bjw1 - The dash kit is still in the works. There is more information on it over at tundra solutions. Some are saying May or June...

These seemed like a good idea, but I'm wondering if anyone has found a good use for them. They don't lock, and are not waterproof. The metal latches on mine are already starting to rust, and the truck is not even two months old!

I wonder if a locking mechanism from the marine industry could be found (like on a storage compartment for a boat) that one could use to replace the lock assy on the box doors? These would not rust and would at least make the boxes more secure.
  • walterswalters Member Posts: 22
Yes, I thought it was kind of odd that these boxes don't lock. The 5 pickup review even mentioned that they *do* lock, but they certainly don't on my truck. I keep rope in mine for tieing down stuff in the bed. Cheap rope:-)
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
thank you I kind of figure it would be a few more months before they came out with the dash kits, thats the only down side of getting a totally redesigned truck but i quess i can wait a few more months.
  • chiefman1chiefman1 Member Posts: 22
engineerboo-Thanks for the input on this issue with the high idle speed and the brakes. I too am at altitude, live at 7900' in Colorado, so do alot of hill driving. Still seems to me that this V6 should not cause the truck to move until the accelerator is touched. These brakes won't last 10k miles at this rate.
Will ask the dealer when I take it in. By the way, the dealership gave me a written note to have the oil changed at 1000 miles on this V6 as part of break in.
  • chiefman1chiefman1 Member Posts: 22
leob1-one question I have about this major leak issue is that I have not kept track of all the posts on this site, but is the leak occuring on all models--access cab, double cab, and standard cab or is just one model? what do you have?
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
I never really paid attention to what particular models it happened on. I have an access cab TRD from California.

Today I am going to the carwash to further investigate this matter myself.
  • aa00aa00 Member Posts: 30
What packages are on it? I'm having a hard time getting a offroad on the double cab from them.
  • leob1leob1 Member Posts: 153
I went to the carwash, popped the hood and carefully sprayed all parts of the firewall, cowl, windshield seams and door cracks/crevices on the driver's side expecting to soak my carpet. So far there is NO water noticable on the drivers floorboard like in the past. I think if it trully was a leak, that something would have leaked inside the cab from the carwash! How could rain or driving in the rain do what a carwash high pressure hose couldn't?

I hate to say it, but I may have been crying wolf when there appeared to be evidence of one, but really wasn't. I will keep you guys informed though if something comes up again. I have to say though, that before the wet carpet I was using a heavy vinyl floormat that doesn't breath. Maybe that contributed to the problem.
  • hammaahammaa Member Posts: 79
"bjw1": Congrats on the new sound. Can you please advise on what size speakers you went with, brands, cost, etc? I'm planning on doing the same very soon. Regarding the deck kit, I've been told there isn't an after-market kit available yet, so some guys/gals have had them custom-made, which typically runs approx +/- $200.00. Thx.
