I have the SR5 package also. I went with the leather upgrade and the seats feel great. I wish they would have added the lumbar support for the passenger side seat also. My wife would have really appreciated it on long drives.

i agree that the silver tube steps would not look good on many other colors...but the chrome tube steps go well with the chromed rear bumber (then you can get a chrome exhaust for under $50 and you'll really be matching!)

I have also heard the noise you are speaking of. It is at start up when it is cold.

Chilehead - Neat idea with the Ozite. Just curious, what type of material is it?

I have hauled a dog crate in my doublecab with the seats down and the back of those seats scratch pretty easily IMO (it was a plastic dog crate at that). I have been looking to get some type of material to put down as I will have lots of stuff back there in the summer. This might be a good solution.

Thanks for the post and pic!

IMO, The seats are almost worth the TRD package. I had a regular double cab for 3 weeks while waiting for my TRD Off Road and I disliked the regular seats.

How's the ride? That's my main hesitation with the off-road package. I do very little off-road, but enough that a limited slip or locker is a must-have. It has a chrome rear bumper & grill surround, doesn't it?

Has anyone noticed the pain texture chance on the bottom of the doors. I have a quadcab and there is a clear transition about 6 inches from the bottom where the paint looks scaly or warped? Anyone else notice this? Should I take it to the dealer for an opinion?
    thanks

The ride on the TRD Off Road truck that I have is actally better than the loaner DC Long Bed.
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
I like the ride of the TRD package (I have the sport). It's not too bouncy like a truck, but stiff enough that you don't feel like you are about to roll in a quick turn. It feels just right to me, and that comes from someone going from a Honda Prelude to this truck!
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,743
That is normal, blackmamba. It protects the body from the additional wear and tear to which that area of the truck can be subjected. It is quite common on many (most?) vehicles. It is on my '96 Subaru Outback and, if I may say, has held up quite admirably to the miriad tests it is subjected (there's not quite as much ground clearance on an OB as a Tacoma!).

Call it an extra plastic coating to protect the paint from stone chipping. But I know what you mean as it makes the paint underneath look funny and scaly doesn't it.

I have a basement double garage and was thinking of trying to straiten the tailpipe so that when you start it up, the fumes would blow out the door rather than inside the garage.

I realize that its heavy stainless pipe and {new} but has anyone tried or had it done and did it work sucessfully?

Last resort would be to cut it and weld on another straight piece as it would probably let go or rot out at the weld in a few years?
  • chileheadchilehead Member Posts: 41
It's similar to the material used in the trunks of cars, only not as dense. This is OK, because I can roll it up and store it in the under-seat boxes when I want to fold the seats up. Ozite is often used to enclose speaker boxes. The web site has info on other uses for the product:
    http://www.ozite.com (Go figure.)

Perhaps it would be a better long term solution to install a vent and exhaust fan in your garage, wired to the garage door opener to perform a couple air exchanges each time you come home and/or leave.

Maybe a better idea would be to drive off right after you start the truck. It doesn't accumulate that much if you drive off within 10 seconds or so. The manual states that to warm up the engine, it's better to drive it than let it idle.

On a second note, you could consider getting Flowmasters or something to replace the current exhaust.

I have the indigo blue TRD sport package #2 with the hood scoop. No glare on the blue. Not too hard to keep clean, but I wash mine once a week.

pegleri- In answer to your questions regarding the VSC on my truck, it was ordered direct from the factory, the truck had 4 miles on it the day I picked it up. We live in Colorado. I am personal friends with the dealer so he was able to modify an inventory order that was already submitted to get what I wanted on the truck. We love the 2005 Tacoma so far.
  • cmitchellcmitchell Member Posts: 18
The MSRP on my o5 Tacoma was $24,270.00 It is an automatic V6 PreRunner with FE, OC-the off-road package #1, and DK. I paid $22,465.00 which is $200 over invoice. TDA $372, Holdback $399, whsl. FR $199. Sorry for the mistake. The other numbers are for same truck but with the SN/C4/FE. Edmunds invoice doesn't include all the other fees like holdback, TDA, etc. but it is pretty close.

The bug guard seen on my truck (http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/801767)

is actually NOT the Toyota brand. I didn't like how those stuck up so much. The one on the truck is called"Focus Auto Design" and they have a website:

    http://www.ppsonline.net/hoodprot.htm

We don't have many bugs here in Colorado so haven't noticed how effective they are...the main reason I got them is to keep chips from the end of the hood from rocks off vehicles in front of me driving. (My wife's van had many chips right in that area.)

I'm getting a SnugLid cap tomorrow!!!

Question: How do I post a photo in the Forums?
Answer: You may post a link to a photo or insert the photo using the standard html tag for an image: (IMG SRC="http://url-location/photo.jpg")

Replace the above () with <>.

You have to store the photo somewhere, as in, your own web site, or one of the many photo storing places.

Usually, the free photo storing places limit the amount of data that can be downloaded (i.e., the amount of times your picture can be loaded), so you might want to consider the size of the picture.

Is it just me, or are the Tacoma's seat belt pre-tensioners really sensitive. It's starting to get on my nerves, as it seems like nearly every time I turn or go over some bumps, the thing locks the shoulder strap, and I have to use my hand to loosen the belt to keep it from tightening up on me.
  • mrvairmrvair Member Posts: 7
    geogecko,

Sounds like your tensioner is a little too sensitive. I haven't had any problem with mine. I don't know if it would help but try adjusting the height setting just above your left shoulder. If that doesn't help I would take it to your dealer.

    mfullen:

No pics yet. But I will shortly.
The side curtain airbags were installed on the assembly line. The dealer called me as the truck was assembled and asked if I was interested. So I took him up on it. It ran an extra $650, but what the heck. If it ever deploys, it will pay for itself when I unbuckle the belt and walk away.

    As to the sunroof:
    http://www.classicsofttrim.com/

This is the second sunroof I had installed by these guys. I had one put in my '03 Tacoma. But this one is a premium sunroof that has two presets, automatically closes when I shut down the truck and walk away, and will close automatically when it senses rain. The manufacturer is in Holland. The roof cost 1G.

This company has installers all over the USA. They can also convert an interior to all leather seats! A guy at our local Toyota dealer had his '96 converted and it really feels and looks nice.

    That is a cool idea!
You can trash it with fishing gear or a wet dog and pitch it when you are finished. This has some very good applications.

Recieved my DC Indigo 4x4 TRD 6spd Taco Feb. 28, at 1100 miles i took it in for grinding at idle and while driving in 2nd gear. Just got a call from the dealership, they have to replace my Tranny it was defective. Anyone else having problems with the manual's?
  • az comaaz coma Member Posts: 19
this is normal. My white double cab has the same thing. I think it is Toyota's attempt to mitigate paint chipping in this area. But... hearing all the gripes about paint chipping doesn't sound like their efforts didn't pay off. I haven't had the paint chipping problem others have spoke of but it hasn't been off road much either.
  • arcpassarcpass Member Posts: 53
The reason I questioned your price is that I have put down a deposit on almost exactly the same truck & was thinking I was getting totally ripped-off. Coincidentally, I just got a phone call from the dealer telling me that my truck has arrived! I'll pick it up tomorrow.

I was discussing transmission quirks with stevepod, this was his email reply to me (don't know if he is still lurking in this forum):

Thanks for the response. I have 900 miles on my truck and it is at the dealer getting a new transmission. Apparently Toyota is aware of the engine racing between shifts. It is a computer issue that has to do with emissions. There is no cure foe it as of yet. I think if enough people complain about, they will find a cure for it. It is a really annoying problem and it takes the fun out of having a 6-speed. I will keep this email and forward you any more I get like it. I am going to present these to Toyota when I am finished.

    Thanks,

    Stevepod.

Just had a brain wave, to list some of the smaller things I've done in the last month since I got the truck to make it more efficient for me, in the hopes you would share some of yours too?

The very first night I removed both front seats of my Silver double cab TRD/SR5 and laid down heavy clear plastic over the rug and Tacoma mats to save them from the salt and water. A bit of duct tape holds it in front behind the rug and popping out the plastic door kicks on the floor to secure it on the sides. Then I still bought winter floor mats to boot. Oh, I plan on keeping it for many years, God willing.

    Then I took a torx screwdriver and moved up the rear view mirror on the windshield to the upper limit. {as I'm tall and it obstructed my view}

Then I took off the plastic string on the gas cap as gas attendants just let it dangle and it scratches the sides.

I stuck on 2" red reflectors on the bottom of the driver side doors for safety at night.

    I got the factory bed mat which has Tacoma written on it and painted the letters with Aluminium paint. {to match the truck}

I applied weather stripping foam tape on the inside edge of the tailgate to keep the dust and water out, as I have the Extang cover.

Next I'm painting the brake calipers...

    {note I only have access to the net at work, I'll be back Monday}

I looking to buy 05 Taco V6 DC 4x4 SB.

Is there really a ride difference between the Offroad package & Sports package or is it just cosmetic? I only been able to test drive the offroad taco haven't seen a sport yet.

Thanks in advance for your comments guys & gals.

If no one can post a picture of the seat covers in their truck, then just tell me if the covers really do fit the way they look on the toyo websites? I'm talking about the wet-suit like covers. They just look way to perfect in the pictures..Covers always seem to fit a little loose which I do not like. They do look cool and maybe better than the actual interior if that is all correct.Thanks.....
  • jkjohnjkjohn Member Posts: 11
If either of you take this problem to the dealer, I would be interested in what they say about it.
  • balboabalboa Member Posts: 2
They have both tan(taupe) and grey sets. I have tan in my Wht. accesscab prerunner SR5. So tight, while fitting them on my hand slipped off and I socked myself in the mouth while pulling towards me on the passenger side. I like them very much. Ask around other toyota owners as many dealers send out 20% off coupons in the flyers. I recall 212$ retail. So another 40$ off is nice too. I also purchase the all-weather floor mats with another 25% off coupon. They look and protect well also. So far after a week, I love my truck and look for places to drive around Newport Beach where I live. My I4 has plenty of get up and go, no need for the V6 in my world.

Someone earlier posted about topping off the tank and getting about 2 gallons more. Don't know if anybody noticed this but I had the chance to test the limit of the low fuel warning, considered reserves and ran about 12 more miles b4 filling up the tank. I was surprised it only took 17.25 gallons to fill up.

This won't matter w/ city driving but if you are out on the highway, someone might end up miscalculating their tank range and run out of gas like i stupidly almost did.

BTW, my 4x4dcab offrd#2 6spd taco gas mileage has improved to 17MPG on highway @65mph (less than 16mpg on higher speeds). still way below its EPA rating!!! it's now nearing 6000 miles.

build date was 10/04 so I probably have one of the first ones out of production. no other issues except the gas mileage. can you say lemon?

    i can't hate this truck!

    G+

Finally, after looking since Jan. 1, and getting lied to by several dealers, I picked up my new Tacoma today. It is an Access-Cab Prerunner, V-6, Automatic with Off-Road Package #2 in Silver. I don't really tow anything, but like the additional upgrades that the tow package provides. I feel I got a decent deal; The MSRP was $25,119 & I paid $23,053. This is also the first time I have ever bought an extended warranty. I got the 7 year/100,000 mile Toyota Platinum for $1000. I figure that with all the computers on these new vehicles, it might be worth it in the long run. I do have one complaint though; the sport seats. I don't find the bottom cushions long enough, so am going to get a set of Recaros next week.
  • maxvenummaxvenum Member Posts: 39
Just one thing to consider when comparing gas mileage to EPA highway ratings. The EPA rating is actually a very unrealistic test (I used to work at a research lab that tested vehicles on a dyno). The highway rating is done at 55 mph! Considering that in many states, the speed limit is 65 mph or higher, this isn't necessarily a realistic number.

the trd seat covers are kind of awkward in that they just slide on and you shove a bar into the space between the actually seat and backrest (actually time to put on about 15 minutes for both). they're pretty loose fitted and when the weather gets above 85degrees prepare to sweat.
  • stevepodstevepod Member Posts: 5
I'm still here. I got my new transmission today. My dealer also replaced the entire clutch package which includes the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. I think they know something that we dont.

When I got home from the dealer, I crawled under my truck to check out my new trans and discovered a giant crack in the aluminum casing between the engine and the bellhousing.

check out the pick. I cant believe my dealer tried to pass this one off to me.

feel free to email me for more info at stevepod@nycap.rr.com

hey imin2mx my tacoma was produced around 10/04 and i had the same leak experience here in los angeles from the heavy rain in january. apparently under the front windshield there's a space in the welding about the size of a half dollar that allowed water to leak into my entire DC trd sport.i've talked to a buddy of mine and he has the same prob w/ his Access cab. had the dealer fix the hole, replace all carpets and give me new mats since they stunk, and its all covered under warranty. its just one of those things that takes away form the new car experience.
