    wooddorker,
The picture of a new tacoma with the dirt bike in that back of the truck in the "05 Tacoma brochure is the pic I was reffering to and I know the specs states 2 tie downs. The reason I called toyota was because of the picture with the dirt bike in the back of the truck. It was tied down in the front of the bed in the pic and there are no tie downs there. I just thought toyota should not put a picture like that in the brochure if there are no tie downs up front. After speaking with them they explained how I could get the factory front tiedowns and they were very nice about it.
I'm not sure why you said "DO NOT show front tie downs" The pic I'm talking about SHOWS front tie downs, I have way too much to do to just sit here and make stuff up. Make sure in the future that you research what you are talking about before you start telling people they are wrong.
The only reason I posted the info in the previous post was in case there is someone else out there that needs the front tiedowns....I was just letting everyone know that they do make them and they are available.
With that being said, get a 05 tacoman brochure and find the picture that I was talking about and then you tell me where the bike is tied down, then you can come back here and tell us you were wrong. Maybe next time you should not be in such a hurry to prove someone wrong.

    rachunter,

I went back to try and find earlier posts in your thread but did not. I too was dismayed at the picture of the dirtbike tied down to the front of the bed. I told my dealer I wanted the tacoma that was in the picture, complete with the front tie downs. They had no experience in this, so what they said they would do is order two D-rings and have them mounted up front. Are there special rings for the front? If you have a part number that would be great.

Also, I am concerned that they will not be able to take the stress of compressing a front fork to them. I was thinking about asking to have them bolted right to the frame rail. Any thoughts?

    Thank You,

    Justin

Did you have to do any cutting on your bed liner?
  • rachunterrachunter Member Posts: 21
    paldente,
My earlier past was number 2695.
To answer your question "are there special rings for the front?"...Yes, I do not have the part number but if you go to this link you can order them there for about $19.00 and they have a instruction sheet that you can view. The front rings actually go on the side of the bed (in front) down low. If you check out the link, it will expalin it much better than I can.

    http://toyotapart.com/installation/PT785-35054.pdf

I also thought about mounting some right through the bed into the frame but after getting under my truck and looking it will not work. The only place you could reach the frame would be where the front bed bolt goes through the bed and that is too far back for motorcycle tie downs. I'm thinking it may be best to just go to the dealer and have them order the kit above and also let them install it, the cost would be a little more but I think it would be covered under warranty.
Just give me a shout if I can help you in any way.

    rachunter,

Thanks for the link. I printed it and will bring to dealer today. They are paying for this install, whichever part it may be. I simply played dumb. I bought an access cab, TRD Off-Road, even radiant red, exact same truck as the one in the picture with the dirtbike. I just said I expect to be able to tie my bike down the same way as my truck in the brochure and told them I want them to make it happen.

Any idea what the load rating is on this install? I'm dissapointed none of these options involve bolting to anything metal. Toyota may replace my bed if my bike tears these out, but I highly doubt they will replace my bike when it flies out the back.

I might just have to tie the two points together, across the bed, and ratchet away until I get a sense of how much pressure they can take before I risk it with my bike.

    So, what's the load rating?

    Thanks,

    Justin

pb2themax - I do not believe that Toyota has come out with a "fix" on this yet. There is a TSB on fender flares but nothing on the quarter panels. The different textured paint on the lower 8" on your truck is normal. It is on all trucks (even the ones having the chipping problems). In fact many late model trucks have this now.

However, if you are talking about an actual film (like 3M protective film). Many Yota dealers have started putting this on their trucks as this is a huge help to the chipping issue.

1sttacoma - I haven't heard that white actually depreciates value. It is just one of the less marketable colors on resale. Doesn't change the actual value though I don't think. Colors like black, silver and believe it or not red are the more marketable colors.

Hope my 1 peso of knowledge helps! :)

Many times if you look closely at pictures in the brochures they say in VERY small print the some optional equipment may be installed. Perhaps that is the case here.....

mpg update: I got tired of spending $2.55+/gallon for 91-octane here in So Cal and still only getting 17mpg. I just filled up with 87-octane and drove 80/20 freeway/normal (averaging 80mph on the freeway) and got 19.5 mpg. Very happy. Downside: very noticeable decline in performance - it just seems to lag a bit more and doesn't sound as tough and smooth. I've got the DC, LB, Pre-Runner, TRD Sport.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
bjw1 - Glad to hear your good results on your trip. I too took a 1000 mile round trip and got very good mileage as well. Forgot what the actual mpg was, but was 350+ miles to the tank. Only had to stop once in the 530 mile one way trip.

I agree that the seats are very comfortable. Maybe too comfortable as I was getting tired! haha. The entire cab was a joy on my trip. Spacious, plenty of room for coffee and pop and cd and ac controls were easy to reach etc. Love it!

schoolie - Love the exhaust more and more everytime I drive the truck. In fact I drive it just to be driving it with nowhere to go so I can hear it! haha

The total deal, parts and install cost me about $120. I got the exhaust and tip online from Full Line Exhaust. They have the cheapest tip prices out there IMO. I could have gotten the muffler a little cheaper on ebay but at full line if you order over $50 shipping is free so I just went ahead and ordered them both from there. Plus I have always gotten great service from them and very fast shipping (they will even send you a tracking number to track your package). I've used them several times before with absolutely no problems. The install only cost me $30. Just went to a local shop (not a name brand) and kept my stock piping as I have heard that this is the best way to go to keep your low end and since I tow a trailer I definitely wanted to keep my low end. They just cut the stock muffler out (whoa that thing is huge), welded in a piece of pipe to make up the difference in length, welded the Flowmaster in, cut the tailpipe off and welded the tip on. Did it while I watched..took a total of 30-40 minutes at best.

As for ground clearance, the Flowmaster appears to not hang as low as the stock one as it was mounted horizontally. The tip exits at the stock location so no difference there.

I'll try to get some pictures and maybe even a sound clip. Shoot me an email if you are interested in seeing them.

Go for it! You won't regret it. I know I don't!

I was wondering if it was possible to just buy a 2005 Tacoma DC with just the Base configuration with no option package added. The base model comes standard with V6 on the DC and Power doors, windows and mirrors. That is pretty much all I want, and don't want to spend $2,000-$3,000 more on a package of options I don't need. When I ask my local Toyota Dealer about this he told me that I had to order one with an option package. Is this true?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Volley - good morning. Congrats on the new exhaust. Have you noticed any difference in performance or mpg? Or is this mostly just for the sound/fun?

I have an 05 tacoma access cab. I replaced the front speakers, but see that the rear two could be a problem...mounting wise. Could someone please email me the best way of doing this? I would appreciate it. rdsoxx320athotmaildotcom.

I know what you mean, just came back from central coast and 91 was $2.77 there here in vegas where i live its $2.59, normally i only drive about 600 miles monthly so its not killing me yet to still get 91 octane, but i did see on the way, 2.99 9/10 for 91 so basically $3/gal, well i got dc sb prerunner.
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
hello, well i got a dc v6 prerunner, with just the sr5#3 that has fog lights power windows, mirrors, and locks which is pretty much base, these days, i too didnt want all of the stuff like trd and 4x4 if i did not need it, i payed $21k + tax, for my dc prerunner, i dont know how hard it is to find base right now but where i live they had just put it up front when i was lokking, good luck on finding the truck that you like.

Sorry to beat a dead horse over again, but it seems that some owners have the noise and some don't.
For those who are experiencing the ticking noise, did it just come on over time, was it simply overlooked at the time you test drove your truck, or did you not pay close attention to the sound of the engine?
I will be test driving some soon and believe me, my ears will be listening for the ticking. What I want to know is if I purchase a truck with no ticking sound, will it stay that way!

Second question: Do the rear windows on the DC go all the way down? The Frontier salesman told me that their CC rear windows roll down 75% and not all the way. Just curious.

    Thanks,
  • brodeyobrodeyo Member Posts: 26
    1) My ticking is on acceleration. The owner's manual actually states that there will be some on hills or acceleration... But, I didn't push the truck on test drive, so I didn't hear it.

    2) To be honest, I haven't even rolled down the back windows yet...It's been cold...

First of all, let me post a retraction of a prior post. I had posted in regards to surging after practically coming to a complete stop and the Tacoma jumping into the middle of a busy intersection. It was so much of a jolt, nothing like I had experienced for the normal surge, that the brakes didn't seem like it would ever override the engine. Well, I posted that a test drive at a local Tacoma dealer had ended up in a surge, and the vehicle ended up in the showroom. I have now learned that the vehicle was not a Tacoma, even posssibly another manufacturer. Well, I hope everyone reads this that read the previous post.-------Other than that, I have had the new Tacoma at the dealership and the service manager has driven it about 100 miles with no reoccurence of the massive surge that I experienced. I am now in a quandry. I can only think about it happening again and have no faith in it not happening again. Prior posts indicated that it was an issue on here from early March. Has anyone had this problem recently, and does anyone understand the arbitration process with Toyota. I guess that I am asking for information on this problem and what chance do I have if it goes to arbitration? Also, is it necessary to hire a lawyer? The dealership seems to have cooperated completely on this and I feel that they have done what they are supposed to do. Just what do I do to get a warm and fuzzy feeling about this vehicle? Moral and spiritual help would be appreciated, also. Hopefully it will never happen again as all I can think of is it happening again at a school crossing or something. Thanks--

Yep. Rear windows on the DC go all the way down...I'm glad for that!

For a 4x4 Sport Dcab 6spd, 89-90 octance, seeing varied mileage, now that I took my snow tires off, and its starting to warm up, hoping to see over 20 mpg hwy more often. I've found the trucks mpg is VERY dependant on you driving style. Much more than my ranger before. Being easy on her, the mileage goes way up. But if your on the gas alot, be ready to pay. Hammered out 110 miles of gravel road running this weekend, lots of heavy gas'in and sliding (ie doing a good job of wearing down the crappy stock tires) pulled 14 mpg. However, when trying to be easy on hwy (staying below 70) can get 20 mpg. With a truck that is so much fun to drive, you may find your taco on the low end of mpg.

Does anyone know what color wires are positive and negative on the front and rear speakers of the 05 Tacoma access cab? They are all different colors and I'm not sure which is which.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
rob30 - Don't let the dealer feed you that one. You can get a 4x4 w/ just an SR5 which is basically the power mirrors, etc. If you get an automatic, there is a little more you have to get. There is even less you have to get on a PreRunner. Not sure what model you are looking to get, but basicall go on the Toyota.com site and if you can build it, you can buy it. You might have to "factory order" it though as most ones coming to dealers (doublecabs anyway) have some sort of package on them. Depends on what region you are in though. Anyway, just build it on Yota's site and tell the dealer that's the truck you want. If they won't get it, go to a different dealer.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
Hi Hamma. I just filled up today and this will be my first full tank with the exhaust on. I'll let you know if there is any mileage change.

As for performance, the truck feels like it rides the same, although I haven't reset my computer yet. I hope to do that this weekend when I install my 12V bed outlet. I don't expect to see any increase in performance though as you usually won't see any with JUST an exhaust upgrade especially just a muffler upgrade. More than likely the only improvements I will see is a mile or two mpg increase due to the more free flowing muffler. If I had plans for other improvements such as an intake, chip, or something like that then I would expect the exhaust to enhance the improvements, but no plans for that.

rdsoxx - For the fronts the the LH is pink+ and purple - The RH front is light green+ and light blue - For the rears both sides are red+ and white -

As for the rear speakers in an access cab I am not sure as I have a doublecab. But I know many have changed thiers out over on customtaco, do a search over there I am quite sure you'll find what you need.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
joessla - I have to admit your problem is unusual. I haven't heard of any other problems like this. I will admit that the braking on my Tacoma is unlike any other vehicle I have driven. It is softer and the engine breaks more than I was used to which almost feels like a surge when almost to a complete stop.

As for arbitration. The vehicle would have to be out of service for some time before most companies would even consider it (usually at least 30 days out of service). If the problem can't be duplicated it will make your arbitration difficult but not impossible.

For piece of mind I would have the dealer bleed the lines and replace the fluid and replace front and back brakes. Make sure they check the ABS system THOROUGHLY!

If you want to know which wire is positive and negative, just pay attention to which wire connects to which terminal on the speaker. Then disconnect the speaker, get some little jumper wires and connect the speaker to a 9v battery. The small terminal on a 9v battery is positive. Touch the wires to the speaker terminal. The speaker will make a sound, but it doesn't hurt anything. If the speaker cone moves out (away from the magnet) then your positive wire is connected to the positive terminal of the speaker. If the cone moves backwards, then you need to switch the wires around. Now that you know which terminal is positive, just compare it to which wire hooks up to which terminal. Now you know which wire is positive and negative. Comprende?

    Hello wooddorker,

Sorry it took so long but here are some shots showing how the snugtop is attached to the bedrails. The clamps/clips make for a good solid connection but it limits movement of your railmounted d-clips.

I am pretty good with maxing the mpg in my vehicles, i use cruise only when flat and loneyly roads, and dont drive up and down with the speed, i have gotten 22.83mpg going 55mph or under but that was a two lane back road and not an interstate, i see people all the time speeding up and slowing down for no reason, just sit on cruise and watch its funny to watch.

I am thinking about getting a Toyota bed mat for my Tacoma and have a few questions. I've never had a truck before so I hope my questions don't sound to dumb. If you don't have a load in the bed does the mat stay down or risk flying out of the bed? Also, does water get trapped under the mat if it rains so you have to take it out and let it dry? Lastly, any negative effects on gas mileage? Thanks for any help.

I'm looking for a good price on a Westin bull bar. I'm on the east coast in Canada, so a supplier with relatively cheap shipping fees would be preferable. The best price I've been able to find is $400Cdn.

    Thanks in advance!

I have a bed mat and have no problems with it, its great for when you haul something, it helps from things sliding around with the slick surface on the bed, it stays down pretty well, hope this helps.
  • xsactaxsacta Member Posts: 26
I buzz around alot at 70 mph without a load and the mat stays put. There are drain holes in the bed so water doesn't stay around that long. The mat works good. It's very grippy. Nothing seems to slide around too much on it. The bed material scratches quite easily and it's very slick. I think the mat is a must . I can't comment on it's effect on gas mileage. Never contemplated that one!
  • lamikelamike Member Posts: 27
Sorry guys but based on the description of the problem it's a drive by wire malfunction. If you don't want to go to arbitration, you should at least have the dealer replace any and all components associated with the DBW system. If I had that problem, that's what I would do before going into arbitration. If they don't agree just let them know that you'll contact them when the truck surges the next time and someone is hurt.

I'm not trying to be funny! This is very serious and they should know the consequences.

I'll be taking delivery on My Taco in a couple of weeks and hope that I don't have a problem like this. DBW is new to many manufacturers so they should be willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Do you have any pics of the exterior of the truck with the cap on it? Did you order it from Toyota? And how much did you have to pay for it?
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
The mat won't fly out. It weighs too much and it sticks to the bed good. Air can't get under it to lift it up. The only way it would hurt gas mileage would be the extra weight, and I don't think it weighs enough to make a difference. Maybe 30 lbs? Just a guess.

I ordered one from my Toyota dealer. $56.

    You gotta get one.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
I've seen some on Ebay. They have both chrome and black. The prices seemed pretty good to me. Not sure how much S&H would be to Canada.
  • fltacofltaco Member Posts: 4
I did not hear it on my test drive. I had about 150 miles when I first noticed it. As loud as the tick is I'm sure I would have noticed it on the test drive. It's loudest on acceleration almost like a fluttering sound. It can also be heard while sitting stationary especially in the garage. Mine is loudest on the drivers side. When you go to test drive it I would suggest lifting the hood and taking a listen. . The ticking does not effect the way my truck drives (awesome!) at all. Nothing out there compares to the 05 Tacoma although I wish that I was one of the lucky people out there that had a non-ticking truck.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
That's very interesting. I can't wait to hear the follow-up to this situation.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I really do believe that all these trucks have the ticking. As I do believe that it is normal for this engine especially since many 4runners have the same noise. However, I do think that it is louder and more noticable in some trucks which leads me to believe that SOMETHING needs to be adjusted. I just don't know what as I am not knowledgable enough on engines. Would be nice if someone's dealer finally gives a good answer though.
  • nstg8rnstg8r Member Posts: 18
Hey if your thinking about the bed mat, Its all worth it. The other day I threw the mat over my load to hold down my stuff from flying out and the mat did the job. And if you don't have a load, that mat is not going anywhere except if someone lifts it out of your truck. Was going over 75 mph and no problems dude. For only $56, it will protect your bed as well. Everyone I know has complemented on the bed mat. And no water doesn't get trapped underneath of it. More like it keeps water out of the bed. And for the gas mileage I have no ideal, funny that you said that though. I don't think you'll find any difference with the mat in or out of your truck.

Just a quick question, has anyone used the Clutch start/cancel button for any reason. I find that it has no use to me. The truck manual seems like it's talking nonsense. Could someone clarify the use of the clutch start/cancel button for me.
Oh and this option only comes with the 6spd maunual transmission.
    Thanks.

How does everyone get such good mileage with their trucks! I have a Double Cab Longbed 4x4 TRD Sport auto tranny(manual. not an option), I get 18 1/2 mpg driving mix town/highway. Drove down to Atlantic City this weekend about 150 miles each way. Expecting to get in the 20' for milage so I set the crusie around 70 or 75 depending on traffic. I barely made 18mpg on the trip. So I lost money at the casino and the truck was worse on milage than normal. What gives? I try to be as easy as possible taking off and speeding up. I feel like my grandmother. What good is a v6 with v8 power if the milage is the same as my Durango was with a v8. And I used to hammer that thing on the highway 85 or more. Help! :confuse:
  • maxvenummaxvenum Member Posts: 39
Do a search on the Tundra Solutions forum (www.tundrasolutions.com) for clutch cancel. There is a thread there talking about it. From my understand, people use it to pull themselves out of mud. If they are in mud and have stopped, if you use the clutch start cancel and start out in a very low gear, you can let the engine idle your way out of the mud.

Another use is if your battery is dead, you may not need a jump start. Find a slight hill, get the truck rolling 15-20 mph, put it in a high gear (4th or 5th) and drop the clutch. This is essentially like kick starting a dirt bike or the pull-start on push lawnmowers. I have never used on any of my vehicles, but I helped someone push-start a dodge dakota 7 or 8 years ago.

    Hope this helps!

Why can't you use the front bed bolts that hold the bed to the frame? Just unbolt them, slip the D-ring bracket on the bolt and then bolt it back down. You might have to mod the bracket so the bolt would fit through the hole in the bracket. Would these fastening points not be out far enough to strap down a Cycle?
